    I've been on Davinci Resolve Studio for about 3 years now and never looked back! A one-time fee of $300 for DR vs $600 a year for Creative Cloud, no comparison. Plus the coloring tools even on the free version of resolve are industry standard and in my opinion, are far more intuitive and powerful than Premiere's.
    Sure there is a student version of Creative Cloud, but that's still nearly $1,000 by the time you hit four years.

    • @SjoerdWess
      @SjoerdWess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I know right. It's quite weird what the price difference is, and that people are still swearing on Adobe..

      @@SjoerdWess I mean, for people that do photography and design as well as video, I might get it. But for strictly video with some animation (After Effects). Time to jump on the DaVinci Resolve train!

    music producer here: your description of a compressor is pretty much perfectly backwards, in a way that kind of circles back to being useful lol
    A compressor decreases dynamic range; it make the loud and the quiet parts of your audio closer together in volume. It does this by taking all the audio that is above a certain "threshold" volume and squishing it down towards that threshold by some "ratio". So if your threshold is -10db, and you have a sound thats at 0db, and your ratio is 2:1, that 0db sound will become 2x as close to the threshold: it will go down to -5db.
    That "make up" slider that you are moving at 8:53 is to make up for this decrease in volume, so that your peak volume doesn't just go lower and lower as you add more compression. And, since the compression doesnt do anything to audio below the threshold, this makeup volume is what makes the quiet parts louder.
    The analogy to contrast is an interesting one, because compression is technically the _opposite_ of contrast: it decreases dynamic range. *But*, the _feeling_ it creates is similar to contrast; it makes the audio sound punchier, just like contrast makes videos/images look punchier.
    Anyway I gotta say that overall this video was super helpful, I've been using Resolve now for my vids over the past year and the first two tips especially were super helpful!

    For anyone wondering, fusion is great. A node workflow is far more logical, and while there is a learning curve like he mentions, you can work just as well in Fusion. Masks in particular are so much more logical

    Davinci Resolve was once a turnkey system costing 6 figures, used purely for grading using specialized hardware. There were rooms in post productions studios just to have this suite of software / hardware there. As you can imagine to access such a system it was nearly impossible. 2021 and you can have this very same system for free, with more features, running on a laptop.
    And just a tiny note, the compressor is not operating on frequencies (at least this specific one), but on dynamic range. The EQ is operating on frequencies.

    • @jeremyleonbarlow
      @jeremyleonbarlow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A turnkey system that was built to run on Linux. Because of that, it still runs on Linux, just like LightWorks, Nuke, Maya & Blender. Post-production houses should be kitted out with RHEL systems nowadays more than ever. For people who don't want to pay for Red Hat support, Fedora, Debian, and Arch based Linux systems are all running Resolve these days and usually a little faster than either Mac or Windows because they were mostly Linux first systems.

    I have been using Davinci Resolve for almost 3 years now. It changed everything. Its now more stable and my films are so great with the fairlight and color page. Sometimes I get rendering errors but that has to do with my shitty computer. I render all critical scenes out in place and then it works perfectly. Couldn't be happier to use the free version.

    As a freelancer, I use Davinci mainly for the Fusion, because first 2 years since I move from Big city to a small town (to take care my mother), I lost almost all my clients ; so I couldn't afford after effect subscription.
    Yes, it takes time to learn it. Especially if we get used to layers, then we have to switch to nodes. But it's worth it. And now, I'll use after effect only when I have to collaborate with team that use AE, and only if they agree to cover the subscription cost 😁

    Davinci is great because it isn't just free but it's also a one time payment if you want to upgrade. In a world of subscription based services, it's one of the few gems out there.
    Incredible tips! I definitely learned a lot of new things, especially with the archive feature.

    I’ve been using the free version learning to edit small little video clips I’ve taken on my phone and hope to branch out to more projects soon. I recently bought a speed editor used unfortunately without knowing I could use it. I will purchase the software soon if I’m able nevertheless!

    "We've always defined ourselves by the ability to overcome the impossible. And we count these moments. These moments when we dare to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars, to make the unknown known. We count these moments as our proudest achievements... And that our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, because our destiny lies above us." -Cooper from interstellar I just switched to davinci resolve from some trying may other editing software and I am greatly impressed so far with just the free version.

    I actually started editing with resolve because I was able to get it for free and I'm still sticking with it today, because it works very good for me. I actually use it only for editing not for color grading although i've seen many videos on how good resolve is at doint that.
    Okay, I did actually use Windows movie maker before but that doesnt really count I guess...
