@freakyco1dzI used adobe for almost a year and I’ve been using davinci for almost 2, davinci is way more capable and far more professional it’s just hard to learn
I've been a resolve editor for years after switching from premiere. it was definitely a bit of a learning curve but now I'm completely accustomed to resolves default shortcuts. it seems like you're trying to apply effects in the same manner as premiere which isn't always the best option. its much easier and you'll have more control when doing motion graphics or any sort of movement effect in the fusion tab. it also includes simple 3d rendering which is essentially after effects and premiere all in one software. it's not very intuitive to do any of the zoom ins, digital pans, or any cropping in the edit tab because of how clunky the key frames are. fusion nodes are intimidating at first but allow you to see key frames, spline, and automatic motion blur, and a lot more tools not accessible in the edit tab. I used to be very intimidated by the nodes in fusion, but after getting over the learning curve, my workflow has been seamless. hope you continue to use davinci resolve because it's so worth it!!
I've been thinking to try Resolve for a long time but still can't manage to make myself to install the program. Probably a combination of limited time and intimidation with the program. I've always wanted to learn nodes but I'm not sure if it's way better then my current workflow or I wouldn't be able to use the skill on a daily basis.
@@TheKidler77I just started video editing a few months ago and can say you just have to dive into it. I had never edited before that in resolve and had very limited experience with premiere pro. Resolve took a bit to get to where I can pretty comfortably edit without having to constantly look for something but it wasn’t super hard and I ended up learning so much in a small amount of time. Don’t worry if it doesn’t initially make sense because Casey Faris and Mralextech make great videos on pretty much everything you need to know.
Honestly it's quite infuriating seeing you forcibly apply the same exact workflow on a completely different piece of software. It seems to me like, instead of treating it as an alternative, you're looking for a clone of premiere. I'd first try to experience it with default features and keybinds, with a really slow initial workflow, and then adapt it to my needs. This way you'll end up learning ways to do things which might be faster, or better than in the app you're trying to replace.
I was suffering for half of the video. If only he bothered to use the tools first instead of brute forcing and hoping that it works as he was expects. At least the conclusion was still positive.
Including him saying you pay a fee when you want to cancel Adobe CC.I only applies to a yearly subscription plan with monthly installments. That's like getting a loan and then cancelling it halfway through and being surprised that the bank wants the rest of the money, as agreed upon in the contract.
@randoguy7488 You make a point but the Adobe stuff is kinda predatory to the point the US DOJ launched a investigation on Adobe rightfully so. I'm pretty sure this is enshittification in action.
Correct. Though it also depends on what you use After effects for. It can't replace everything, for example it can't be a replacement for motion graphics and animation work.
@@_S_P_A_C_E_M_A_N_ yes it can. You can do motion graphic and 2d animation in fusion. Very different workflow than after effect, but it's possible. In fact, it might be better.
@@_S_P_A_C_E_M_A_N_ Its very well possible, I'm currently in the process of learning how to do it. It is noticable that Resolve wasn't made specifically for motion graphics, but new features are introduced with every update, and the efforts by Blackmagic Design to turn Resolve into full fledged motion graphics/animation software (at no expense to other features), is impressive. Its complex though, and from time to time feels very counterintuitive... Still, its powerful, capable and the one time payment for the studio version costs just half of the yearly subscription fees for Adobe
@@Anri0 not a lawyer but isn't it.. impossible to do that? like you can make copyright stuffs for a piece of code that a company made, but wouldn't a different piece of code that does the same thing not infringe on that?
I'm glad people give this software a try. I've been using it for years and I don't see any reason for me to switch to adobe. Love your videos, keep it up!
There are a few very important things you missed out: 1. You can disable the 'red lines' in the viewer by choosing the overlay in the lower left corner of the viewer. 2. You can do the same to adjust the dynamic zoom. 3. You cannot only view the keyframes below a clip in the timeline but press the other button at the right end of a clip to bring up the spline editor where you can adjust keyframe behavior e.g. smoothing transitions. Hope that shows you that there actually are ways to do it. But great video though, learned a lot.
Oh I forgot about the main reason that triggered me a lot, that is why I wrote this comment: Whenever you want to zoom in, you can choose a anker point, where it zoomes to. That makes the whole grid shit unnecessary
the "laggy timeline" issue you had is actually just becuase davinci resolve is finnicky about where you grab the slider. You just need to grab it at the very top and it'll be smooth. The tools also have keybinds, so switching between them is actually pretty easy. The sequence B + M1 + A for example will place a cut where your mouse is. I find this approach much nicer than having to reach for alt, ctrl and shift keys all the time. I feel like if you're going to review davinci resolve you should also start of with the default settings. You look up keybinds, and then are surprised they don't work when you've chosen a different keyboard layout.
The video's made from the perspective of someone who's experienced with Premiere and just wants to take his workflow without adapting it, which will be the route that 99% of the new Resolve users will be taking, and this video will be nowhere near as frustrating as those people will feel.
@@michelvanbriemen3459 In my opinion this is a flawed way to view software though. You will often times make life harder for yourself by trying to always stick to one workflow, especially when switching programs. Davinci resolve is a very different video editor from premiere, so going in with a blank slate and finding a workflow within DV will be more beneficial in the long run, at least it was for me.
@qLeila You are wrong sticking to 1 workflow incresses your output with knowing all the keys all the time . If your time has a worth you dont want to constantly chang how you do things .
@@xythiera7255 Sticking to a workflow for a long time can help productivity, but stubbornly sticking to a workflow across program migrations/multiple years often has the opposite effect
Fun fact: In Adobe, if you change your subscription-for example, from yearly to monthly or to another software-you can cancel without any fees since it would count as a new subscription. That's how i've been saved from fees
Hello again. (It’s me from the affinity video again) for editing audio you don’t need to use the normalize tool. You can just drag the white bar (like adobe) it also shows the waveform in real time with that as well.
Few things: Resolve works with databases, so it would be more protected during a crash or file corruption, unlike premiere which works by having random project files locations like you showed but suffers poorly with file corruptions. The timeline lag often can be caused due to different codecs being heavier than others, not a problem for me, but it may vary. The audio mixer in the timeline is small, but you can click on the mixer button at the top right to get a much better meter, even better than premiere pro. Needing to remove, the mouse click only applies for ripple delete, but is not necessary for ripple start or end to playhead. Instead of needing to click somewhere else to grab the playhead, just pause and then move the playhead. Doing freeze-frame or transform effect feels slower than premiere to you is because you haven't even opened one of the most powerful panel of resolve which is the inspector panel which has everything about a clip. Well Resolve has guides, next to the time code, but there's no way to do custom guides yet. Also, instead of manually cutting and adding transitions, you can do your editing first and then select the clips and apple the default transitions much quicker IMO. If you want it to search everywhere when you are looking for an effect, click on the arrow next to the magnifier and change to all folders from current folders.
it's nice you're trying out new stuff. but consider watching a full beginner guide on ×2.5 speed or something. that would have saved you tons of time cuz it felt like you're trying to force a workflow of a different program and that's what stopped you from using features and advantages of the one you're trying out.
The whole point of this is to NOT look stuff up until he runs across it to see how much is in common with adobe and what may be pain points for people switching
@arjunbaweja7755 good point. i guess what you said would be good if he mentioned that somewhere first. but i think since he didn't mention anything like that, it made davinci look bad for people who think about switching. davinci resolve is really a great software and isn't that hard to get into at all if you approach it the right way.
Correction: By using PIA you prevent your ISP from seeing where your traffic is going, and instead you give some company based in the UK that ability. So you're still in a see-through public toilet, it's just someone else that can see you, instead of your ISP.
I just started using Davinci Resolve and was absolutely rage-quitting about none of the keys working even though I selected the Premiere Pro preset. You have no idea how much you've helped me! Thanks a lot!
watching this as someone who does literally everything in fusion tab (bc i dont like keyframes in edit tab, i cant live without fusion spline graph) is really funny to me lol, great video btw !! thanks for giving it a try and giving honest review of it !
First - no need to export project files it is way safer in database , database can be set on any folder /drive , 2nd those annoying zoom in can be done with dynamic zoom which is way faster . 3rd Resolve was color grading software that costed 80000$+ they made a free version if it and even added NLE and audio editor in it ! Premier can suck ahh , I had to redo 3 hour long projects because adobe with new premier update disabled auto back and then they removed names from audio file , resolve was pain at begining but then it all made sense and it is quite faster than premier especially footage stabilizing and smart ai masking stuff

@clarenceoveur9497 It seems more efficient only after you learn the different tools and tabs because of how they basically separated out simple things you could do in Premiere in the same layout. Also the free version isn't as great as most lead you to think. You don't get hardware acceleration for exports which leaves you with pretty big file sizes. The way the playhead acts is just flat out stupid. Why on earth would I want the video to continue playing if I make a cut. Also the option to solo the video preview output as the sole display on a monitor seems like a paid only option.

If you need any help getting faster and better let me know! Happy to help you out!
two things you need to know: 1- the playhead still moving while applying cuts and stuff are actually very efficient in times where you can instantly react and make cuts and marks while playing the video and then come back and ripple delete or check the marks you put and so on. 2- you can apply the default transition on the whole track at once and that would have saved you a ton of time
14:30 that looks like automation to me, and if it is, I love that! Also tho, the premiere one also does look like that? I dont know if any of them ACTUALLY are, but yeah
34:30 I’m literally screaming at the screen like why would use guides even in Premiere when the anchor point exists 😅 And in Resolve you can toggle the visibility of the transform tools
Something about your PC is strange. For me, Resolve starts in 15 Seconds and loads a short project in 20-ish seconds, no timeline lag at all. Their convoluted project storage is a side effect of the way they store changes. It definitely is a program of the "learn once, then clean slate and settings diving" variety.
note: 1. Your internet traffic is already encrypted through HTTPS. 2. You only change who can see the data, and the government could still try to get the VPN company to log some traffic. 3. Using TOR is free and works better at concealing your traffic, also, using it delutes the TOR traffic so not only whistleblowers, people in countries with ooressive governments, etc are using it. Having more people use TOR makes it less clear what peoole use it for, since your ISP can stil see that you use TOR, just not what you use it for.
you should make a separate video where you explore just the fusion page, its insane! also i recommend tutorials as it can get very complex quite quickly.
I've learned a ton just from watching this one video... as a result, I've signed up to your course. I really like the direction you take with what I've seen so far. I already know I am going to find success from it. Thank you!
I've never had such a hard time watching a video. 90% of your complaints are your own lack of understanding of the software that stem from you trying to force the 'adobe way' on it. DaVinci Resolve isn't Premiere and never claims to be. Forcing the workflow and specific behavior from a completely different program onto another one accomplishes nothing and will obviously slow you down because that's not the way the software was created to be used. If you actually wanted to try the actual DaVinci Resolve experience you should've used the software defaults
i was struggling so hard when watching him drag the playhead over an .mp4 and wanting for it to be smooth. like, brother, Davinci actually supports .mkv. Just use .mkv! mp4 was never meant for this. when I moved to Davinci from Premiere, it was a dream. This video doesn't feel like the first time user experience, it feels exactly like you said it, a Premiere user forcing the Adobe way on Davinci. There will always be multiple ways of accomplishing the same goals,, yet, after a while using Davinci, you can see that the Adobe way of doing things is as messy as its own software suite and business model.
Some tips: 14:30 Yes, it does mean that. It allows you to change the curve of your keyframes. 14:49 These icons on the top change "easing" type (I guess that's how it's called) 26:00 You can also freeze frame in the Inspector tab in "Speed change" menu (snowflake icon) 35:24 In 19th version you now can expand arrow near magnifying glass icon and select "all folders" option in order to search everywhere 36:50 You can double click word "position" or "zoom" to do that (not sure) 37:28 Instead of grid as guides you can use Anchor Point to zoom exactly where you want 43:14 Motion Blur effect is actually available in free version. You can add "Transofrm" effect (yeah, sounds strange beacuse we already have it) from effects to your clip and enable it there OR in the Fusion page add transform node to your clip > animate it with keyframes > then select transform node and in setting check "Motion Blur" (and it's customizable) 43:35 You can customize it using "Dynamic Zoom" parameter in the bottom left corner of your preview window (it's in the same place where transofrm is, just expand the menu) 44:40 You can manually change bitrate using Custom Export > Quality > Restrict to: *set your value Hope that helps ;)
FYI the reason resolve was slow is being you have premier open too. if you have 2 editing programs open at the same time the GPU or Processor is being split by 2 programs.
just found your video and love it. instead giving an pro introduction and teach us everything it have in davinci. you are exploring and experience like a new person who try to adapt on the apps.
Whenever you edit audio like this - it is vital to use the audio tab to get the best experience. Also the free version of DaVinci Resolve doesn’t have hardware acceleration. You need the studio version (and a one time lifetime license) to do that. Also, DaVinci resolve 19 is in beta. Make sure you use version 18 for the best experience.
Great video. I was the same when I started using DaVinci Resolve😅. If you want to achieve more close to Premiere experience while applying zoom or other stuff with clips you need to do it from the Effects/Fusion page. The way you did it apples your changes to the entire video track, not for the independent clip. Another way is to keep different clips into different tracks but with time you get used to switching to the Fusion page and it allows you to make some stunning effects quicker and easier.
I'm far from a video editing pro, but I've been using Resolve exclusively for several years and it's always been good to me......FOR FREE. I don't think I would ever pay for Adobe to do what I need, but I may eventually buy Studio from Resolve if for no other reason than to say thanks.
Bingo.. 300 bucks.... This is Pocket Change in comparison to what it used to cost for NLEs back in the 90s and 2000s I went from Final Cut 7 in 2016 to DaVinci Resolve and haven't gone back ... And unlike Adobe or Final Cut I can run on Linux too if I want to...
Watching this and the Affinity video is so much better than trying to learn a software by watching a normal tutorial. This feels like a natural process of learning and not someone who knows everything blasting past at 100 kilometres.
I didnt watch the whole video but some of the main things taht stood out to me were the guides, you can hit ctrl+g and it will add guides that you cant move, but with what you were trying to do, is suggest using the pivot point. The pivot point moves the image as you zoom in, at 0 its still in the middle and everything is centered but when you move the pivot and zoom in then it will zoom into the pivot point. It saves me SO much time. With the keyframes, you need to reset the transform or turn off all the keyframes not just 1. With the compound clips, if you need to find it, you can double click the clip, look up above the image (top left above the video) and it will tell you time for that specific clip, allowing you to know where in the compound clip timeline to go to. it didnt show the keyframes because your clip was "minimized" meaning on the timeline you had it smaller to make more room. motion blur is achievable in fusion by adding optical flow, and then vector motion blur after, studio is better. About the timeline moving up, im not sure i havent had that problem, maybe because im on 18.5 but i think maybe because you were holding the playhead from the line and not the triangle The task manager thing makes sense abt having to end task but normally i only need to wait like a minute max and it reopens fine also if you dont wanna have to select alt in order to move just one, you can click the chainlink button next to the magnet the best way to not lag your play back aswell is to go to the top set of buttons, hit playback, cache, render cache, auto also i do like that when i move the playhead it plays after so that if i want to see the beginning of a clip multiple times without having to play again its nice to just click where i want it to play from again but maybe thats because i do anime edits also you didnt have a problem manually cutting but Peej Ent has a great tutorial on auto scene cut detection that i feel like you would like if you want to make a fusion video or a remake on this video i would love to help my discord is sweateyt and im just gonna say somebody has it cracked if you would like. God bless
How long until you update your TH-cam Course to use Davinici Resolve in addition to Adobe Premiere? You are teaching me things that I didn't know and I have been using Davinci Resolve for 2 years.
27:49 You dont need to add more keyframes. If you move the playhead then start messing around with the transform.settings it will automatically add your keyframes. Fun tip.
Welcome to Resolve, we've all been here. Quick help: Instead of making a "Nested Clip" you could have just add an Adjustment clip above all the video tracks and do your crop/zooms/etc onto that, and just like in After Effects the kf's would apply to all videos below.. Also, Change timeline resolution after edit and before/on export. That way your computer isn't working so hard dealing with UHD settings.
I feel like the first mistake you can make with any software is to use shortcuts made for a different software instead of using the native ones. It just messes with your ability to learn the software properly having differences between documentation/tutorials and what you have set. It's also that (usually) all the tons of shortcuts have a reason for being set to what they are that - without having used the software for years - you naturally wouldn't know/understand. I'd like to imagine that usually the developer knows better and I should trust them for these kinds of UX things. In this case I think the difference between you and what the devs thought would be great is that you're still using a mouse. Try to see if you can just not do that. 🤷🏻

I've been using Davinci for a week now. It has a steep learning curve at the start with its weird way of working but once you get through that first hurdle it becomes quite aight, I really like how fast it renders too. One negative thing tho is that keyframing is a miserable experience. The ui/ux in the fusion tab is dogwater. Something that should normally be a single click (making all the scale & positions keyframes smooth without them janking out) is a convoluted experience here.

I used to be very intimidated by the nodes in fusion, but after getting over the learning curve, my workflow has been seamless. hope you continue to use davinci resolve because it's so worth it!!
This video was "can I force Resolve to be like Premier", to which the answer is "kinda sorta, but I would recommend against it"
have you tried the mini keyframes spline thing in the edit page? for me i use that insteed of opening the fusion page and works really well for me.

Agreed
@@randoguy7488 Except for the fact that adobe wants more money after cancelling it. Not just the yearly amount.
As far as I am aware DaVinci Resolve is not only a competitor to Premium Pro its also a competitor to After effect
Correct. Though it also depends on what you use After effects for. It can't replace everything, for example it can't be a replacement for motion graphics and animation work.
@@_S_P_A_C_E_M_A_N_ well yeah, don't people usually use Adobe XD for those or something ?
@@_S_P_A_C_E_M_A_N_ Can it not? It just uses a different method I think, davinci resolve uses nodes

There are a few very important things you missed out:
Uuu nice, thanks!
Oh I forgot about the main reason that triggered me a lot, that is why I wrote this comment:
Whenever you want to zoom in, you can choose a anker point, where it zoomes to.

Hello again. (It’s me from the affinity video again) for editing audio you don’t need to use the normalize tool. You can just drag the white bar (like adobe) it also shows the waveform in real time with that as well.
The normalize tool is a pretty new one as well and not really meant for that purpose
Few things:
Resolve works with databases, so it would be more protected during a crash or file corruption, unlike premiere which works by having random project files locations like you showed but suffers poorly with file corruptions.
If you want it to search everywhere when you are looking for an effect, click on the arrow next to the magnifier and change to all folders from current folders.
crazy work fr
it's nice you're trying out new stuff. but consider watching a full beginner guide on ×2.5 speed or something. that would have saved you tons of time cuz it felt like you're trying to force a workflow of a different program and that's what stopped you from using features and advantages of the one you're trying out.

DR software never costed $80.000.

@@joebob2311productions I am glad you got some value out of it, but if you’re looking to permanently switch to davinci, I recommend learning the davinci workflow, it’s much smoother after you get used to it, rather than keeping the premiere workflow in the new program!
Maybe Resolve isn't as streamlined and intuitive as you think, otherwise he wouldn't be struggling with basic sutff.
Why on earth would I want the video to continue playing if I make a cut. two things you need to know:
1- the playhead still moving while applying cuts and stuff are actually very efficient in times where you can instantly react and make cuts and marks while playing the video and then come back and ripple delete or check the marks you put and so on.
2- you can apply the default transition on the whole track at once and that would have saved you a ton of time
All I learned from this video is that it takes so much time and effort to make a good video. Definitely a job, not just a hobby.
14:30 that looks like automation to me, and if it is, I love that!
Also tho, the premiere one also does look like that?
I dont know if any of them ACTUALLY are, but yeah
You don't really need the on-screen guide in your case because you can simply change the anchor point and that's the point where davinci zooms in to
34:30 I’m literally screaming at the screen like why would use guides even in Premiere when the anchor point exists 😅 And in Resolve you can toggle the visibility of the transform tools

Some tips:
14:30 Yes, it does mean that. It allows you to change the curve of your keyframes.
14:49 These icons on the top change "easing" type (I guess that's how it's called)
26:00 You can also freeze frame in the Inspector tab in "Speed change" menu (snowflake icon)
35:24 In 19th version you now can expand arrow near magnifying glass icon and select "all folders" option in order to search everywhere
36:50 You can double click word "position" or "zoom" to do that (not sure)
37:28 Instead of grid as guides you can use Anchor Point to zoom exactly where you want
43:14 Motion Blur effect is actually available in free version. You can add "Transofrm" effect (yeah, sounds strange beacuse we already have it) from effects to your clip and enable it there OR in the Fusion page add transform node to your clip > animate it with keyframes > then select transform node and in setting check "Motion Blur" (and it's customizable)
43:35 You can customize it using "Dynamic Zoom" parameter in the bottom left corner of your preview window (it's in the same place where transofrm is, just expand the menu)
44:40 You can manually change bitrate using Custom Export > Quality > Restrict to: *set your value

This bothered me, if your trying out a new software you wanna download the version that is stable and not in beta.
Even for Mac, Resolve runs faster if pro?
@@chezchezchezchez Yes - because of hardware acceleration. The ability to make use of any hardware acceleration is limited to the studio version

About the timeline moving up, im not sure i havent had that problem, maybe because im on 18.5 but i think maybe because you were holding the playhead from the line and not the triangle
The task manager thing makes sense abt having to end task but normally i only need to wait like a minute max and it reopens fine
also if you dont wanna have to select alt in order to move just one, you can click the chainlink button next to the magnet
the best way to not lag your play back aswell is to go to the top set of buttons, hit playback, cache, render cache, auto
also i do like that when i move the playhead it plays after so that if i want to see the beginning of a clip multiple times without having to play again its nice to just click where i want it to play from again but maybe thats because i do anime edits
also you didnt have a problem manually cutting but Peej Ent has a great tutorial on auto scene cut detection that i feel like you would like
if you want to make a fusion video or a remake on this video i would love to help my discord is sweateyt and im just gonna say somebody has it cracked if you would like. God bless

It's not native shortcuts to a different program either, they're custom.

It's a good video, and for all those problems or annoyances that yo seem to have, I think it's becaus you used Premiere as your main software for so long, because for me, there's no problem on DaVinci, it's my main software, but when I used Premiere, I was like "awww, that's so awful to do, easier in DaVinci". Nice video, like everytime BOG!
I learned the basics of DaVinchi Resolve during my Film & Arts class back in 2021, been using it ever since as it does everything I need for casual video editing.
I really love the video especially your reactions when you say agh ogh :)
This video is imo great for people transitioning from Premiere to Davinci, cuz you do the search work for us. Tank you
You can just +3::Send "{Right 5}", instead of repeating the key. Also if there is a shortcut to stop the playhead, you can just hook all the shortcuts with ahk, so that they send stop playing shortcut, after another shortcut when needed.
Another lovely video. Keep Going❤❤
I just love watching this series
This video was so fun! Seriously, even though I teach beginner courses in Resolve, Premiere and Final Cut... I am most efficient in Premiere and can relate to 90% of your Resolve problems in this video! Good to see it's not just me :) Resolve is so much better in so many ways, yet in a few ways so strange too. And in many ways just different.
I love how you pronounce "beautiful", is beautiful!
sometimes it was kinda funny to see you exploring davinci resolve, good vid.
Not sure why so many people are complaining about you changing the keybinds…it’s not “making DR into abode” it’s just using your already learned and added to muscle memory commands. Heaven forbid anyone customize their own software lol, love the vid!
