The filters are not just filters. They have a check valve inside them which can get clogged inside.
And from experience it was easy to remove these through the wheel arch liner.

I hope you start working on an F30 N20 engine one day. I learned a lot watching your E46 videos, but my 2003 was totaled a while back and I replace it with a 2015 F30.
