Another great video Michael. You were able to clearly articulate a concept and demonstrate a process that many just turn into a confusing mess. I was worried whether my VANOS unit was at risk as my beloved E46 M3 Convertible is approaching 200,000 Km, but after this, I know what to listen for. I am undertaking many of the more basic maintenance tasks, but the BMer is booked in to Sourthern BMW in Melbourne early next month for rod bearings and engine mounts and a full health check. I will then progress the resulting work list as I plan to keep the street legal race car till I drop off the perch and then they can bury me in it…….. Love your work!!! Love learning about E46. Thank you.

speaking fo vanos, (this may be a long story, but im gonna make it as short as possible) several months ago, my wife told me that she experienced a stall at a stop sign. I interpreted it as the early stages of a cam sensor problem and was waiting for it to happen when Im driving, but it never ever did. And i drive the car 10x more than she does. i shouldve hooked up my bm700 obd2 reader, but it didnt. I was in the process of replacing the oil filter gasket and thought, out of an abundance of caution - since we have a 3.5 year old - I should just replace the Cam sensors. not know which one to replace, had both done. I wanted to do it myself, but couldnt get the fan bolt off, so i opted to take it to a garage. they changed the oil filter gasket, valve cover gasket, purge valve, both cam sensors (hella brand), ps hoses, rack boots and tie rods, all for 50k yen, about 400 UsD. immediately after repairs, i began to get an intermittent hard start and random stalling at idle and or at a stop. I hooked up the obd reader and im getting code p0340: indicates a malfunction with the camshaft position sensor A circuit. from your experience, what are some of the problems that could cause that p0340? could this be the beginning of a vanos problem? its a 2000 320 with 98k kilometers on the clock. thanks in advance for your help.

do you know if a worn out vanos will cause massive misfires at low rpms? like if you goose the throttle at low rpms, it instantly misfires, from around 1500 to 2500rpms, but if you let off throttle and goose it again it stops..

Other than upgrading the coolant system to aluminum radiator and expansion tank and also replacing the hoses with hi-temp silicone hoses with screw clamps do you have any recommendations on where to start ?

Can the intake vanos inlet cause fuel cut off???? I'm having misfire with fuel cut off but I've replaced fuel injectors, Exhaust camshaft sensor, fuel pump, coils and plugs... Upstream oxygen sensors.. I haven't gotten to take off the vanos inlet that blocks the intake cam shaft sensor... I can't even out my intake cam shaft sensor on because that inlet vanos is stripped idk how to get it off I've tried vice grips and nothing

Would this cause loss of power, loss of power, clacking at 3500 rpms at idle, 3k under load, and valve cover gets extra hot, from the front of cover, lees so on motor side

Hi, quick question. My e46 turned the EML light no check engine light , so no codes. But my idle is very lower than normal. When i rev the the pedal. It sputters and once it hits the 2000rpm it heaitates and goes back down to 500rpm. Its a misfire. I checked the coils. They all seem to be working. Cleaned out the IAC and throttle body. And the CCV. Still idles low. Second question. When i cleaned out the throttle body. I unplugged both battery terminal and i umplugged the throttle body harness. When you plug the harness back and both the battery terminal. Do i need to do throttle adaptation or reprogram? Would a bad camshaft cam and exhaust sensor couse these eml light and idle low? Please help.

Also there is two little threaded hules one on each side o each piston. The have little plastic plug or filter what are these do I need to replace them? If so what is there name or description. I've got an E39 with a 3.0 M54 in it, and it has a major loss of power after 5k rpm, and a nasty rattle around 2k rpm that sounds like it's from the intake manifold. The noise doesn't disappear when disa is disconnected, so it has made me consider vanos being the issue. I did already swap the Vanos unit from an engine with working vanos (I did an engine swap from my 2.8 to the 3.0, and the 2.8 ran perfectly other than a blown headgasket) but the noise persists. Could it potentially be something with the intake manifold? I am using the 2.8 intake manifold and plan to swap to the 3.0 when I get the adapter plate for the throttle body.

Great info…my 05 E46 (200km) automatic trans - has low power at the bottom end and low power at the top end but seems to run total normal on start up (cold engine) but soon drops back to the symptoms at normal operating temp. Do you think this is vanos related or Disa valve perhaps? Love your channel!

so, the M54 dual VANOS doesn't actually have anything to do with the mechanical/ physical timing. just makes the adjustments during operation?

Hello. I have m52b25tu engine and I have a problem with intake cam sensor. error 65 (impa). So i changed that sensor for HELLA and after while it was showing it again. It doesnt have big effect but its annoying. Sometimes 1of 10 starts car is just cranking for about 3-4 seconds and after it starts up its is running low on power. So i need to crank it for second time than it runs perfect. I know this cam sensor is common problem but i didnt find advise for me. My question is if it can be semething eles behind that sensor or some other error that causes this annoying problem. Ty for any advise. Ur videos are great :)
