I recently spent 22 days in Toronto and took the opportunity to visit Glenn Gould's grave at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. I also visited the Glenn Gould Foundation, where I was very well received by Mr. Brian Levine, Executive Director of the foundation. I told Mr. Levine that Gould's recording of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto with Leopold Stokowski was unsurpassed. Glenn Gould has achieved immortality thanks to his priceless artistic recordings.

Yes, I agree that this is the best, almost perfect performance of my favorite piano concerto! What a glorious thing to listen to! I've heard about ten pianists play it--all good, but Gould is the greatest one of all.

I was in junior high school when this came out. Made a trip to the library and asked for a Beethoven record to listen to. I'm so lucky the librarian chose this for me. More than once I fell asleep to the second movement. The record began a lifetime of listening to Gould, and was the gateway to being able to hear all the different "voices" in music, through Gould's unmatched technical proficiency.

The orchestra's excellent! I think they must have been satisfied with their sound. Great texture!! Stokowski was probably the first conductor to use microphones in a way that allowed the audience to hear the fine textures of the orchestra's sound.

The orchestra's good job must have satisfied themselves. They are as counterpointistic as Gould. Stokowski is of course the arranger of Bach's Toccata&Fuga.

Side 2 was always my favourite on this album. The whole thing builds to this point. Gould plays a theme and the orchestra comes in full force playing it back. Then it goes quiet and he plays another more complicated extension of the theme only to have the orchestra blast it out again. It continues to go back and forth almost like it's intended to sound improvised. Remarkably playful stuff.

The Rondo is very similar to Indian carnatic classical. Emperor and Eroica were the first two pieces i heard as a 17 year old teenager in 1979. Life changed after that! Both these pieces are etched in the brain and when i work or walk, i play it in the head!

Perfect acoustics. Perfect audio pickup. Time stamping with perfect inputs, tempo and sync. Perfect performers interpretation, even with the virtuosity coming out of the performer's mouth hahahuehue. But there are no variations on what Beethoven set out for this concert. No personalism of the interpreter. Perfect performance by the musicians. Perfect stamp and tuning. Great bass. Gould and Stokowski did a magnificent job. Listen in the headset and check out what I'm saying. Few productions, even from the best names, manage to deliver the ensemble of the work like this. Congratulation to the channel for making it available with such soud quality. I used to listen to this composition through another video here on TH-cam, but now this one will be my preference.

Gould nailed this, but he didn't OWN it. He has to share the mastery of it with Perahia and Michelangeli. Gould's performance here is about on a par with his 1970 performance with Karel Ancerl conducting. Superb, even with the humming !

This one is slower than the 1970, and gives more time for the many rubato touches throughout the work....it's a one of a kind.

Claudio Arrau is my favourite in this, along with a few others. Stokowski & Gould we’re both very eccentric & did things “ their way”. This to me is below par with a lot of other great recordings

Gould, always the innovator. Opening cadenza: slow like an arpeggio exercise. The same cadenza at 13:43 (recapitulation): like a "Mannheim Rocket". Why play it the same way like everyone else does? At 6:35: "crescendo" in BOTH hands! All other pianists treat the left hand as mere accompaniment, "siempre piano". Minor details, but oh, what a difference.

    • @donmcgibbon6575
      @donmcgibbon6575 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Jacob Opper Glenn always considered the left hand as a sense of the bass pedals of a pipe organ, something to add more “architecture” to the music being played. Glenn played the organ at his church in Toronto when he was a boy; a prodigy in the making!

Personal opinion, of course, but I can hardly accept these 'deviations' from a pianist like Gould, I mean you can see there is some thinking behind that... but when I see from other pianists (there are many unfortunately) every time I am wondering why they believe they know better than Beethoven.... while they should honestly think they are hardly anything compared to certain composers. Also most of the times I really do not get what they want to demonstrate...

The orchestra's excellent! I think they must have been satisfied with their sound. Great texture!! Stokowski was probably the first conductor to use microphones in a way that allowed the audience to hear the fine textures of the orchestra's sound. Both the soloist and the conductor are counterpointists.

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 - Glenn Gould, American Symphony Orchestra, Stokowski (1966/2015)
    1 I. Allegro 00:00 ~
2 II. Adagio un poco mosso 22:03 ~
3 III. Rondo - Allegro ma non tanto 31:26 ~
With this performance, I enjoyed the real pleasure of TH-cam (music).
The performance of the LP record era is wonderful, the sound quality has gloss.
Glenn Gould's piano is very fashionable.
And dundee Stokowski's tie is also nice.

The performance of the two people,
      Every time we change from "1966 → 2015 → 2018 (April 4)",
That charm is up. It is a surprise.
I have an image for the performers (two people) changed.
And again, this channel has the highest level of recording.
I can hear even the performer's "Hum voice".
It is not unpleasant for me. The performer seems to be enjoyable.
Funny, because it is more elegant than Sergiu Celibidache.
