This performance might be a fluke, never to be repeated. Zimmerman's crystal clarity and Bernstein's interpretation are a gift to humanity. If I had to choose one piece of music over everything else in the world this might be it, but only this particular performance. I've heard others that don't come anywhere close. Even the recording was top notch.

Truly amazing. However the greatest interpretation to me is that of Rubinstein, the piano genius th-cam.com/video/K25fZRwbeGM/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared. Listen to the subtile cadence of the opening notes of this adagio that make all the difference. The Jerusalem orchestra is slightly weaker than this one but nothing compares to Rubinstein's instinctive, heartbreaking and flying play

      Maybe !
But it's also an undeniable fact, that Beethoven himself firmly believed in God and in divine inspiration too.
When he was preparing himself for the composition of his great mass in D-major, the Missa Solemnis, which he'd later regard as his greatest and most important work, he wrote in his notebook :
"Nur in den alten Kirchentonarten ist die Andacht wahrhaft göttlich.
Gott lasse es mich einmal vollbringen !"
( "Only in the ancient church modes the adoration is truely divine.
May God let me accomplish it for once !" )

1:54 through 3:00 is the tenderest, gentlest, kindest, and most loving passage in all music that I have ever heard, experienced, or felt... If we want to know the love in side the heart of God, listening to this passage is peeking at it in clear day light... I thank Beethoven and Mozart and others for allowing us a glance, even if for a few moments, of the love and beauty of God... ♥ ♥ ♥

To be honest, I didn't know Richard Stilgoe was a concert pianist.
I'm new to all this classical business and just taking a tour around what's been recommended to me and thus far, this is absolutely top top of the tree. I can't believe this piece if music came from a single persons mind. Of course, the dedication and willingness and love of the musicians who play it still 200 years or so later...well it makes a dead hand trace a line down your spine until you shiver with watery-eyed joy.

The piano part to this piece is amazingly simple, almost comically so. Single notes or thirds and fourths accompanied to an Alberti Bass at times. One would not find such simplicity out of place in one of the easier sonatas by Mozart. And yet ... such powerful, transcendent beauty. I find myself asking each time, how did Beethoven do it, with so few notes? How? Unbelievable.
