- Music was his elixir of life: On October 17, 2012, just before his 90th birthday, pianist Menahem Pressler gave a concert in Paris' Salle Pleyel. With the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Paavo Järvi, Pressler played Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat major, K. 595. Nimble fingers even at grand old age - Menahem Pressler is proof that it's possible. The star pianist was able to look back over a 50-year career. Between 1955 and 2008 he was performing some 100 concerts each year with the Beaux Arts Trio alone. Menahem Pressler passed away on May 6, 2023, aged 99.

(00:18) I. Allegro
(14:32) II. Larghetto
(22:54) III. Rondo, Allegro
The Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat major (K. 595) is the last of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756 - 1791) piano concertos, of a total of 21. He wrote it in 1791, the year of his death. At its premiere in Vienna, Mozart played the solo part himself - it was to be his final public appearance at the piano. Even though this is the last of Mozart’s piano concertos, the drive to realize new compositional forms is nonetheless still very evident. Echoes of Mozart’s well-known spring composition Komm Lieber Mai… (Longing for the Spring) can be heard in the third movement, the Rondo. Although it's written in a major key, the piece sounds mournful, infused with a sense of yearning. The composer had fallen on hard times and was hoping to acquire some financial security by producing a large body of work.
Soloist Menahem Pressler (1923 - 2023) was born Max Pressler in the German city of Magdeburg. His family is Jewish, and after the Nazis came to power, he fled with his parents in 1939 - initially to Palestine, and then on to the US in 1940. The members of his family who remained behind were murdered by the Nazis. In 1946, the young Pressler won the Debussy International Piano Competition in San Francisco, remaining in California thereafter to continue his studies. He founded the world-renowned Beaux Arts Trio in 1955. The ensemble would go on to created over 50 recordings. Numerous musicians comprised the trio up until its final concert, in 2008. Pressler also performed as a soloist throughout his life.
Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi was musical director of the Orchestre de Paris from 2010 - 2016. Paavo Järvi was born in Tallinn, but emigrated to the US in 1980. For a long time he was musical director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and is still in partnership with the ensemble as its Conductor Laureate. He’s been music director and chief conductor of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich since 2019.
The Orchestre de Paris is one of the largest and most-respected orchestras in the world. Founded in 1967, it has been led by several conducting greats, including Herbert von Karajan, Sir Georg Solti and Daniel Barenboim. In 2015, it relocated from the Salle Pleyel to the Philharmonie de Paris in the French capital’s 19th arrondissement.

To anybody who's reading this, I pray that whatever is hurting you or whatever you are constantly stressing about gets better. May the dark thoughts, the overthinking, and the doubt exit your mind. May clarity replace confusion. May peace and calmness fill your life. 💓
Meaning: Listen to Mozart and all will be fine? Im afraid it is not all that simple.
The Dark Scholar: Do you have any special opinion about this music, well write it down so we can read it, if you only use this forum to express some nice thoughts about life, well, then use another forum. We are only here for the the love of this music.
But today I regret my words yesterday. Nothing wrong with your words. And I can understand why you chose Mozart to publish this prayer. Best wishes!
❤
Wunderbar. Vielen herzlichen Dank.
I was not his student at IU but was immensely privileged for having many conversations with Mr. Pressler. What a musician, truly a legend. He was always graceful and impressed me by his kindness, smiles and of course, towering knowledge of classical music in general and piano repertoire in particular. He is indeed much missed. But I'm sure he and my piano teacher Mrs. Henriqueta Duarte are having wonderful conversations about Mozart, Beethoven and all the greats! RIP
Yes, I hope so! And thank you for sharing your memory with us!

Praise God for Mozart and those that can play his works.
Classical music, the elegant language of emotions, where the notes weave tales of passion, sorrow, and joy that resonate through the ages. 🎵💫

God bless this guy. To be able to perform like he did here at his age to this masterpiece of music is a real privilege to watch. I hope he'll get to meet Mozart in the afterlife. Rest in peace brother.
Thank you for the music, Menahem Pressler. Rest in peace.

An 89 year young pianist who 2012 plays this Mozart so good! Really amazing. R.I.P., Menahem Pressler.
What!? He was 89!? That will really help me to deal better with my insecurity issues.
@@DudaAS100 Yes, and he died this may 2023 at the age of 99, playing the piano till almost 98. So Eduarda, you have a lot of time to deal with your insecurity issues. Good luck!

He plaid Mozart as if Mozart himself would have played it. Also the orchestra with him sounded in a great balance and harmony Bravo. When we play classical music we must not deviate or bring our own interpretations of Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven this music are for ever in the way it was written.
How wonderful humans are made the ability to enjoy music even for it to reflect on the face ❤
I love his smiles to the conductor. Not a note wasted - a very special and beautiful performance, and it seems the members of the orchestra agree. Rest in peace, Maestro Pressler. Thank you.
Yes, the smiles in this performance shows in some way a "Mozart attitude" to life.
I agree. I also love the little smiles and looks of satisfaction to the woodwinds during their exchanges.

A beautiful performance. I know that his many students over the years at Indiana University join me in saluting this great artist. R.I.P.
I agree. Even if I am not a student from Indiana University.
@@staffanolofsson8201 I'm an IU grad. I wasn't one of his students, but I know he was much loved and respected by those who were.
@@leestamm3187 Thank you Lee! I appreciate your comment. Greetings from Sweden.
Menahem Pressler war rein begnadeter Pianist und ein wunderbarer Mensch!
when you play Mozart it's like no other composer - the richness of hte chords and melodies just resonate thru the soul. such a joy to play (bassoon here)
This concerto exemplifies the Mozart turn. With the blink of an eye, the pivot of a single note transforms the feeling from light to darkness … but then always back to light.
Exactly!
Thank you Jeff, I couldn´t have expressed it better myself, the way a single note can turn something around. From major to minor and then back to major. And the way Mozart uses this limit between these two categories in an unpredictable and wonderful way. To make his music balancing around this border.
As I now have focus on these "Mozart turn" it seems as all in the first movement builds on that turn. As well as in the other movements. So thank you again Jeff Smith for putting me on that trail! This gives me another way of listening...

Love the way you described the beautiful chord progressions 😊
We can't live without you, Mozart.
Another beautiful Piano Concerto by Mozart, Performed by Mr. Menahem Pressler. One of the greatest Pianist in the world. He is missed
but never forgotten. Everyone is expressing happiness in this performance. Thank you, thank you!!!😎
I find this music wonderful. It is simple in the most distinguished way, letting the beauty of it out in full freedom. And Menahem Pressler, at this occasion 89, makes his best to let me understand how genious Mozart´s music can be. Thank you sir, and Rest In Peace.
Amen ! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
A perhaps strange but wonderful thing that I noticed: in his playing Menahem Pressler is still alive. In his music he will always be alive, we can hear him, and so he is living with us. Even if he now is dead. God bless his soul.

Pure enjoyment from Pressler and Mozart.
I have never heard of this amazing pianist before and I am (by chance) watching this podcast. So I did a search on him, only to learn he died on the 6th of May this year. May God Bless this man, he was indeed a virtuoso and will live on in these podcasts for a long time to come, at least so I hope. Simple and sheer brilliance without bravura.
No murió. Vive en cada nota, en cada obra y en cada vez que lo volvemos a ver o a escuchar. Saludos desde Argentina.! 😊

Thank you.
Yes I have now understood that he gave conserts as late as 2018. What a lovely life with music, despite his tragic life as a refugee from German nazism. Sorry that I first now has become aware of him, it was his dead that made me find him on TH-cam.

Meraviglioso uomo, grandissimo pianista, grazie per questo superconcerto!!! ❤🎹
To listen to Menahem Presslers Mozart is like beeing outside on a warm but somewhat cloudy summer day. Sometimes we are in the sun but a bit later in the shadow, a shadow that gives us some refreshing, perhaps cool moments, so we can long for the sun again.
The phrasing in this performance recalls Clara Haskil in her prime. Both pianists were lifelong chamber players. A career in very well-played chamber music often acts like a crucible. Constant reality-checking and re-re-questioning, required to play successfully with superb colleagues, ultimately helped create unusual subtlety of nuance in both Haskil’s and Pressler’s playing, most obvious in Mozart. This is a fabulous performance and an important document. Thank you for posting it!
I appreciate your comment. I didn´t know before that Menahem was most of all a chamber musician.
@@staffanolofsson8201 Menachem formed the Beaux-Arts Trio with cellist Bernie Greenhouse and violinist Daniel Guilet, whose chair was later assumed by Isidor Cohen. They were considered the world’s foremost piano trio for about thirty years. I was lucky enough to have studied with all of them except Guilet.

I am not familiar with this pianist, however his overt love of playing this piece, his thrill listening to the orchestra with anticipation of his entrance, his smile while playing and communicating with the conductor and visa versa, his smile when completing a difficult passage and his mouthing the notes while thoroughly enjoying himself was just a treat to watch and listen to!!! He was at one with the piano, conductor and orchestra!! Amazing musician and human being!! A consummate musician!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍

So beautiful! Have been Playing this Concerto Repeatedly! His Joy- the Members of the Orchestra so immersed in the Melody! Absolutely a Perfect rendition of Amadeus Mozart…………
" His Joy- the Members of the Orchestra so immersed in the Melody! " 👍👍👍👍👍
Such a charming concerto. It brings back the sweet memory of my after-Amadeus period in the '80s. I cherished this one because I was very aware that this was one of his last compositions. In the melancholy second movement I always recognized a last goodbye from the genius, who died much too young. It made me feel sad. But the gentleness of the piece installed a warm memory of Mozart that has remained for the rest of my life.
almost the same!
..amadeus in about 1990 (but it completely changed my musical outlook)
i found this in my parents records back then, learning at what stage he wrote it, yeah fairly near the end..
it didn't have quite so much extra (i can't think of the word or phrase) ..so much extra twiddley on the piano, embellishing notes and phrases..
made it sound simpler and with melancholy.. but that's just me of course
i heard this described as autumnal which i liked
@@davidevans3227 Autumn is symbolicly connected to dying, so that makes sense!
@@MMijdus i was trying to think of something bit more positive to respond with 🙂
..it occurred to me autumn can provide as well, with harvest, fruit and great bounty! etc. llol
