I was not his student at IU but was immensely privileged for having many conversations with Mr. Pressler. What a musician, truly a legend. He was always graceful and impressed me by his kindness, smiles and of course, towering knowledge of classical music in general and piano repertoire in particular. He is indeed much missed. But I'm sure he and my piano teacher Mrs. Henriqueta Duarte are having wonderful conversations about Mozart, Beethoven and all the greats! RIP
God bless this guy. To be able to perform like he did here at his age to this masterpiece of music is a real privilege to watch. I hope he'll get to meet Mozart in the afterlife. Rest in peace brother.
Oh lord! This the music that all humans must hear now. My wife was deaf and she loved it. She saw my joy listening and knew Mozart was God's musical voice. She was deaf from birth. How could she know?

He plaid Mozart as if Mozart himself would have played it. Also the orchestra with him sounded in a great balance and harmony Bravo. When we play classical music we must not deviate or bring our own interpretations of Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven this music are for ever in the way it was written.

I have never heard of this amazing pianist before and I am (by chance) watching this podcast. So I did a search on him, only to learn he died on the 6th of May this year. May God Bless this man, he was indeed a virtuoso and will live on in these podcasts for a long time to come, at least so I hope. Simple and sheer brilliance without bravura.
I love his smiles to the conductor. Not a note wasted - a very special and beautiful performance, and it seems the members of the orchestra agree. Rest in peace, Maestro Pressler. Thank you.

A perhaps strange but wonderful thing that I noticed: in his playing Menahem Pressler is still alive. In his music he will always be alive, we can hear him, and so he is living with us. Even if he now is dead. God bless his soul.
Yes I have now understood that he gave conserts as late as 2018. What a lovely life with music, despite his tragic life as a refugee from German nazism. Sorry that I first now has become aware of him, it was his dead that made me find him on TH-cam.
This concerto exemplifies the Mozart turn. With the blink of an eye, the pivot of a single note transforms the feeling from light to darkness … but then always back to light.
Thank you Jeff, I couldn´t have expressed it better myself, the way a single note can turn something around. From major to minor and then back to major. And the way Mozart uses this limit between these two categories in an unpredictable and wonderful way. To make his music balancing around this border.
As I now have focus on these "Mozart turn" it seems as all in the first movement builds on that turn. As well as in the other movements. So thank you again Jeff Smith for putting me on that trail! This gives me another way of listening...

The phrasing in this performance recalls Clara Haskil in her prime. Both pianists were lifelong chamber players. A career in very well-played chamber music often acts like a crucible. Constant reality-checking and re-re-questioning, required to play successfully with superb colleagues, ultimately helped create unusual subtlety of nuance in both Haskil’s and Pressler’s playing, most obvious in Mozart. This is a fabulous performance and an important document. Thank you for posting it!

They were considered the world’s foremost piano trio for about thirty years. I was lucky enough to have studied with all of them except Guilet.

To listen to Menahem Presslers Mozart is like beeing outside on a warm but somewhat cloudy summer day. Sometimes we are in the sun but a bit later in the shadow, a shadow that gives us some refreshing, perhaps cool moments, so we can long for the sun again.

@DW Classical Music - THANK YOU - Mozart played in the way Mozart would have wished - and I love that lovely old man's lovely face and expressions - not to say how much I love the way he plays - so utterly beautifully - a most precious performance: Paavo Järvi conducting with such a sublime elegance and grace - and the brilliant orchestra. The Larghetto part is especially dear to me - I've been listening to Paul Badura-Skoda playing the Larghetto in this beautiful way, but, sadly, it was taken away from TH-cam - there is, in fact, the whole concerto with Badura-Skoda, but that version the Larghetto has got some superfluous, disturbing embellishments. Now I got back the joy when listening to this giant in music, Menahem Pressler. And all these wonderful musicians let me share their joy in making this wonderful concerto a most superb, lovely experience.

I have now listened to Paul Badura-Skoda in his last recital and I understand what traditions means and how they can work also in younger interpreters.

I came across Paul Badura-Skoda when I listened to David Oistrakh (the greatest of the greats of all time - King of Violinists) playing Mozart's 6 variations on Helas, j'ai perdu mon amant. I think that Paul Badura-Skoda is one of the best interpreters of Mozart.
@@staffanolofsson8201 I had never heard of Menahem Pressler before I listened to him now in this piano concerto - he became one of my absolute and most loved favourites. I came across him when searching for Vladimir Horowitz (also one I love) to play this concerto. His interpretation of Mozart's concerto 23 is celestial - especially the Adagio part. I think that the very greatest musicians have this in common: modesty and kindheartedness...

To listen to Menahem Presslers Mozart is like beeing outside on a warm but somewhat cloudy summer day. Sometimes we are in the sun but a bit later in the shadow, a shadow that gives us some refreshing, perhaps cool moments, so we can long for the sun again.
How beautiful and uplifting. It feels that the warm sun is shinning even in a grey and sad day. First time I heard this giant Pressler.

Je me souviens de Pressler avec Beaux Art Trio a des concerts a New York IL y a Presque 40 ans. Alas! On ne l a plus ici dans ce monde. Je regrettes la consolation et l encouragement qu IL m a donnes par le piano.

@DW Classical Music - THANK YOU - Mozart played in the way Mozart would have wished - and I love that lovely old man's lovely face and expressions - not to say how much I love the way he plays - so utterly beautifully - a most precious performance: Paavo Järvi conducting with such a sublime elegance and grace - and the brilliant orchestra. The Larghetto part is especially dear to me - I've been listening to Paul Badura-Skoda playing the Larghetto in this beautiful way, but, sadly, it was taken away from TH-cam - there is, in fact, the whole concerto with Badura-Skoda, but that version the Larghetto has got some superfluous, disturbing embellishments. Now I got back the joy when listening to this giant in music, Menahem Pressler. And all these wonderful musicians let me share their joy in making this wonderful concerto a most superb, lovely experience.
Thank you! Interesting how I , never knowing of Badura-Skoda, in this way can come in contact with other opinions in this commentator field. Knowing that I never have the first opinion, there will always be people knowing more than me that will catch my interest.
I have now listened to Paul Badura-Skoda in his last recital and I understand what traditions means and how they can work also in younger interpreters.

I came across Paul Badura-Skoda when I listened to David Oistrakh (the greatest of the greats of all time - King of Violinists) playing Mozart's 6 variations on Helas, j'ai perdu mon amant. I think that Paul Badura-Skoda is one of the best interpreters of Mozart.
@@staffanolofsson8201 I had never heard of Menahem Pressler before I listened to him now in this piano concerto - he became one of my absolute and most loved favourites. I came across him when searching for Vladimir Horowitz (also one I love) to play this concerto. His interpretation of Mozart's concerto 23 is celestial - especially the Adagio part. I think that the very greatest musicians have this in common: modesty and kindheartedness...
