    I set out to make a video about collecting / scavenging heat from the exhaust... while measuring the temp of the pipe I was using, I thought to myself... "that's not enough to cool on" .... So the question is.... Is it really ?

    My step father, Joe Noyes, during long car trips, used to heat up/cook cans of beans, soup, stew, or hash on the exhaust manifold of his car. He rigged up a open topped wire cage in a can-sized space between or next to the exhaust ports in the manifold, and, when he got hungry, he would pull over, pop a couple of holes in the top of a can (so it wouldn't explode), place the can in the caged area on the manifold, drive a few miles, pull over again and retrieve his now hot canned meal. In modern cars, the exhaust manifold often has a heat shield on it that might have to be modified for this to work -- but it is still do-able....
    Of course you would want to keep a can-opener and some kind of hot pads or tongs to grab the hot can in the car. He used his pocket knife to pop the holes in the can.

      Haha... that's awesome.... I did that once with a few slices of Pizza a few years ago. There is a company called "Hot Dogger" who makes (or made in the 90s) a device for snowmobile mufflers, to heat up food.

    good idea.. maybe a couple baffles to deflect the exhaust heat or maybe a 90 degree turn to the center right below the stove top.

      I was rushed to get this video out as it was filmed last evening to post for new years day... but yes... a baffle would have helped. After the video was edited I went back out and pointed the exhaust at the top (for the thumbnail photo) and it worked really well. I'm currently running it now because it makes my garage smell really good, haha !

    Try flat copper pipe or tubing! Plus copper retains heat very well for cooking and a heat exchanger,
    I like copper cookware!
    I am going to use copper pipe as my exhaust, straight down through the floor, no pressure issues from all those bends. I might expand it to 3/4 or a full inch.

    • @loweredexpectations4927
      @loweredexpectations4927  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would love to do this, and have almost pulled the trigger a few times... Every time I stand there looking at the price of copper.... Yikes. I was looking at 1" pipe and it was $70 for 6 feet, I believe.
      Like you say, the pipe doesn't have the rough surface, so 3/4 is probably fine. In fact, the inside of the exhaust port is 19mm 3/4"

    Happy New Year Joel. This had me in stitches. When you mentioned exhaust heat recovery I wish there was I way I could send you a video of my system. Just got it hooked up a day ago. Nice, a New Years cookout! I bought a 300cm exhaust from China for 15 USD, wound it into a 10 inch coil of 4-5 turns, and am using it to extract all the exhaust heat before venting it. With natural convection, the final turn is still cool enough to touch at setting 1-2. A small desk fan blowing over it makes the last turn cool at any heat level. It only represents about 5-10% of the heat output/fuel usage, but it makes it just that much cheaper than electricity.

      @@loweredexpectations4927 All of it! I had no issues with restriction in Alpine mode, but it may be a tad too restrictive for the max setting. It looks cleaner than I expected too. If you're set on getting a heat exchanger, a brazed plate heat exchanger from China might be a good option, you can run air or water through it if you wish. I think you can get an appropriate size for 50-100 US. Brazed-plate exchangers aren't as restrictive as they might look, as once the fluid goes through the hole, it runs through all the plates simultaneously, and I _think_ the hole can be enlarged a bit since it won't be under significant pressure. Looking forward to what's to come, thanks!

    I would like to see you open up or chop off the heat exchanger and turn the heater (what's left of it) upright so the flame shoots up. Put a grate so you can set the pan over that flame. Don't have the flame touching the pan, or you may get a lot of soot.
    To reclaim heat from exhaust, use old hot-water baseboard. It has fins on the copper pipe. The pipe may be too small and pose a restriction to flow, so you might need to use 2 tubes side-by-side.

    Really wanted this to work. One because I'm a frugal bastard who thinks cooking with waste heat is perfect. Second because i had a history doing similarly on the intake manifold of a '66 Bronco in the 80's. The exhaust temperature is tempting, but it seems that the number of Btu available is simply inadequate. I have not figured a cooking device efficient enough to make this idea viable. There are limits to the time i would willimgly spend hanging around the back side exhaust vent on a cold evening. Nuts.

    • @loweredexpectations4927
      @loweredexpectations4927  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha... Well do I have good news for you ! If you put just a little effort, planning and thought into it, this will work really well. The exhaust output is about 700 to 800 watts, and with a little playing around I was able to get the cooktop close to 200C
      I have plans to build another one as this one was just a last minute "gitter done" thing where I literally grabbed an old tin ... I had been using it to store plumbing supplies for 8-9 years.
      They made a device called a "Hot Dogger" that attaches to the exhaust on your snowmobile and warms / cooks meals while you drive... This is a real thing, and it works pretty well.

  • @examplerkey
    @examplerkey 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Happy New Year to all diesel heater enthusiasts 🎆😃🥳! Yes, it would sizzle and cook a lot faster if you orientate the exhaust inlet towards the cooking surface.
    The heat from the exhaust is so much, in fact, it's slightly lower than the diesel ignition temp of 210°C? It can be put to use in many different ways if done properly. For example, first stage cooker, followed by water heater and air heater stages, all in series or parallel depending on feasibility and one's preference.
    Copper or aluminum is better than steel at heat conduction, even your cat knows this 😅. A used BPHE is about tenna. You have a welder, you can weld copper pipes to it easily. The trick is to install it in L shape - inlet exhaust and BPHE in straight vertical into a bucket/tank/barrel/water butt, then outlet from BPHE in horizontal out of the bucket at near the bottom to a flexi or rigid pipe or no pipe at all, let the condensation (if any) drips out. In that way, with no pump, you get free hot water.

    Don't you have a scrapyard somewhere near?
    You better not use one of these stacked plate style heat exchangers, they clog too easy, when used at lowest setting for longer periods, like over night - for instance to prevent freezing.
    It depends on the fuel.
    With the super clean modern Diesel or kerosene, it's almost no danger for any sooth, with heating oil there is some, because it's not burning as clean.

This means that you can easily use 3/4 copper pipe for the exhaust... I suspect long runs of 3/4 may be too restrictive at max output... but if so, one could always step up to 1"... but that's much more costly.
      I'm not totally sure if normal solder would hold up to the temp at the joints close to the heater, so it would have to be mechanically fastened as well. I do want to play around with this more... I will have to see if I can justify the cost of purchasing the copper parts.

    Water injection in small amounts(either in thru the fuel line or a separate injector somewhere in the intake air stream).

      Hey ! Thanks for the comment.
      I have been considering a few typed of self cleaning for almost a year now... Steam is problematic as it absorbs too much heat and if it were made outside of the heater (by the exhaust or other heat source) when injected into the chamber, it would displace too much volume and cause issues with the burn.
      I have not considered vibration... It's an interesting idea. I'm not sure that you could shake the whole heater that intensely. It would risk breaking the exhaust and inlet off, not to mention killing the electronics. Perhaps a plunger or something that periodically tapped the chamber... a solenoid that operated at a high frequency...🤔 ... that might work.
      The ideas that I came up with were 1. a rotating brush that turns slowly inside the burn area and 2. an auger that also turns slowly and screws / pushes all of the crud out the end of the burn chamber. Not sure if I will ever get around to creating these... but they have been in my mind !

      For that money of such a diesel heater, one could weld three or four dedicated waste oil burners, if not more.
      I know, there are already many out there, but i'd give it a try anyhow - because it's your viewer's count, that matters and there is still demand or at least curiosity out there - i'd consider the waste oil diesel heater either a dead horse, or if really used, a pain in the ass.

      @@tjhouston4916 Very cool. I have been strongly considering waste oil gasification just to make a video... Never heard of it being done ... sort of just like distilling, I suppose, but without condensing the gasses.
      For gas storage I assume it is compressed ? That must be quite the process... it would have to be cooled, have all the moisture removed and a bunch of other things I'm totally overlooking on this superficial level, haha.
      For a year now I have been wondering if the exhaust heat from the heater would be enough to boil off waste oil and make enough fuel for the heater.

    How would a "cast iron radiator" work for as a heat exchanger? And adding a 12volt computer fan?

    • @loweredexpectations4927
      @loweredexpectations4927  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it was large enough, that would work great ! Cast iron isn't as good at absorbing and dissipating heat as say aluminum, but if it has enough surface area, it will absorb lots of heat.

    Hey Joel, Happy New Year. I had a question. Could you theoretically run the exhaust out from one heater directly into the air intake of a second vevor heater and use the second heater's heat exchanger and fan to capture and use the exhaust heat? Do you think the exhaust from the first heater would be enough to heat up the second heater's heat exchanger to capture the exhaust heat. Might be an easy experiment given you have two heaters and only need to connect them by a length of pipe.

    • @loweredexpectations4927
      @loweredexpectations4927  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I have actually been wanting to do this for some time. I need to get another heater from Vevor, haha. I'm almost certain that this would work really well.
      I've already thought about how you would have to remove the combustion fan so that it wouldn't melt... You would want to leave the external fan on and running as the greater the temperature differential, the more efficient it will be. I would say there is at least a Kw of energy being lost, and I think a second heater with a fan would do a pretty good job of capturing the heat.
      I don't know how to ask Vevor for a heater for this reason... try to explaining to a chinese lady that .... yeah. I may just have to take the one out of my truck, or buy another one...

      Oh oh, dangerous direction, especially these days, where luxury life has met its limits and the rollback has started.
      I'd keep in mind, that there is not much sense in showing people how to burn money, empty their wallets faster or what else leads toward this direction.
      The draining effect to peoples wallets is generally high enough just with the sparked interest in gadgets and tools, but the initial idea should linger around the point of saving money by diy.
      So, no - it is not a good idea to burn valuable money by using a second heater as a mere heat exchanger and throw the expensive activ components out.
