    It's good that you did an on road review. 99% of jeeps will never see anything but the pavement between the driveway and the mall anyway.

    I always get a giggle out of posts on Jeep videos from people saying things like "these aren't REAL jeeps" or "REAL Jeeps don't need no new fangled gizmos". I remember when the YJ came out people said "this isn't a REAL Jeep, the CJ was a REAL Jeep". The fact of the matter the JK was a better off road vehicle than the Willys, the CJ, YJ and TJ. By all reports the JL is better still. By giving consumers a choice on basic, now normal, options the customer base is increased. This only improves the chance that the brand will go on for another 70 years. Having heated seats or a good sound system has no relevance on off road performance.

    • @darriusholt
      @darriusholt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Couldn't agree more. My wife loved the way jeeps looked. Once she got in one and saw how basic it was, it kind of put her off of the jeep thing. With the updates to the jl's interior jeeps are now back on the list. It reminds me of when people were complaining about Ford putting a 4 cylinder in the mustang. Some people just don't like change.

    I am from Germany and I was visiting the United States in July this year. During this visit I saw the new Jeep Wrangler and directly went to the next Jeep Dealer (actually it was in Cadillac, Michigan) to have a closer look and I fell in love!
    Back in Germany, I had to wait until the middle of September, until this car was presented here (actually it was in Oldenburg, Niedersachsen).
    I've bridged this time by watching your video again and again. It's by far the best review that has been made on the JL. I love your humor. Large makes sense !!!
    By the way: I ordered a Wrangler JL, Sahara. I will get in January 2019. :-)

    Great review! I like that you focused on the day to day use, not just how good it is offroad. Most people looking to get one of these either already know how badass it is offroad, or simply don't care about such things. A test like this is great for someone who is just on the fence about whether this would make a good daily driver or not.
    Like me. I know these kill it offroad, but am leery of committing to one for day to day use. Last year I rented a 2 door 17 JK Rubicon that was slightly modified, and while it was amazing on the trail, I had concluded within the first 5 minutes that I hated it on the road. Funny thing is, that experience made me want one even more, just not in that configuration.

    A Jeep Wrangler can actually be an excellent daily driver. I have a 2013 2 Door Wrangler and when I first bought it, I intended to use it as a weekend 'toy', as it's lifted and on 35" tires, and use my CX-5 as a daily driver, but I've been having so much fun with the Jeep, that I've been using it as a daily driver. Being small, I can park anywhere, being lifted, I can see above traffic, and I'm averaging about 20ish miles per gallon, which is not too awful. The Jeep is such a joy to drive, that I look forward to driving it every day.

    A 1999 base model Wrangler was our primary vehicle from 1999 to 2008. We were quite sure that we would not have liked any other vehicle as well for the price. HOWEVER, we also used that vehicle for exploring Utah (and sometimes surrounding states) an average of a dozen or more times a year for the first several years we owned it. There were probably at least a half-dozen things about it that the average person would NOT like.

    • @nightnday6675
      @nightnday6675 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like what?

    • @rogermetzger7335
      @rogermetzger7335 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightnday6675 Most people, if they were to buy a Wrangler for daily driving without first driving it and looking it over carefully, would soon find several things about it that they wouldn’t like.
      Most people, for example, would quickly tire of climbing over the higher-than-average side sills, a “problem” that’s exacerbated by the height of the floor above the ground.
      When everything else is “equal” the Wrangler can’t go around a corner as fast (or maneuver around an obstacle at speed) as vehicles that have a lower height to width ratio. A new Wrangler can go around corners as fast as most people ever actually DO go around corners in an ordinary “car” but many people dislike the “sense” of the Wranglers not being as capable in that regard.
      Our son has a Grand Charakee (2014) but wouldn’t buy a new Wrangler, even if he could afford one. He thinks of the Wrangler driving position as “claustrophobic”.
      If I’m not mistaken, the new 2-door Wranglers don’t even have a third seat belt in the rear seat. The 4-doors do but the center seating position is NOT comfortable for an average-size adult.
      Even if you buy a base model Wrangler (“Sport”?) it won’t have as much space behind the rear seat as an ordinary “car” of the same price would have in the trunk (or behind the rear seat).
      Entry and exit into/from the back seat of the two-door Wrangler is even more awkward than entry and exit into/from the back seat of the most popular two-door “cars”.
      There might not be much difference in fuel efficiency between a Wrangler and a “car” with the same engine if the owner never drives over 40 mph. On the other hand, if the Wrangler is driven 60 mph (and especially if it is driven faster than 60), the Wrangler owner will need to buy more fuel than for a “car” with the same engine. Also, as compared a car with the same engine, the Jeep won’t accelerate quite as fast in a high speed passing situation.
      None of the above will, of course, be a reason to not buy a Wrangler if the prospective customer likes the advantages of the Wrangler. Yesterday, my wife rented a Nissan Sentra to drive while her Ram Classic is in the body shop. The Sentra is “better” in most of the ways listed above but...it doesn’t allow as upright a seating position as a Wrangler and, if a storm or something else causes the streets to become strewn with debris while we are driving the Sentra, it won’t allow us to navigate OVER the obstacles as a Wrangler (or even the pickup) would. U.S. Mail delivery drives get stuck WAY less often in a Wrangler than they would in most other types of vehicles.
      We lived in Utah most of the time we owned our ‘99 Wrangler so there were many more opportunities to explore unimproved or poorly maintained roads on public land than would have been the case in most other states. If you live in the Mountain West or the Desert Southwest and buy a Wrangler, I hope you enjoy its advantages as much as we did.

    The safety features are all available in 2019. The sensors and rear view mirror are mounted to a crossbar behind the windshield and don't fold down with the windshield. The lumber test was kind of pointless; no one buying a wrangler is worried about 8' lumber.

    Please don’t buy a rubicon unless you actually plan on off-reading. You’re only hurting your own wallet. Get a Sahara. More creature comforts so to speak in that trim. Ps this was a great video. Loved the humor of it.

    I doubt having a folding windshield is the reason why it didn't have additional sensors... more like they can still charge a $ and not include it... maybe will see it in a future edition as a $$ option.

    The Wrangler Unlimited is what the Cherokee should have evolved into. The Wrangler itself should have stayed a 2-door utilitarian vehicle with as few bells and whistles as possible. It most definitely did not need that keyless entry / start-stop system in it and should have stuck with a very basic key that could be easily copied and was waterproof to whatever depth you might be at.

    I "daily" my 2018 Rubicon JL with no issues in 7k miles of ownership. Gas mileage sucks at 15.5-16.5 tops in city or highway, 20 miles or 300. Terrible. Reliability has been stellar and free oil changes for 2 years is a nice bonus. Interior is great until 65 mpg, when the wind acts up - even with the factory hard top. Other than that, it tops out at 99 mph and holds the road fine until about 70 mph. Highway driving is okay except when cross winds exceed 15-20 mph, then you feel it. Sound system is amazing, cargo is huge, fit and finish are pretty top notch for any American vehicle with 4 wheels and paint quality is better than my Audi A4.

      Alvin, I own a '99 XJ that take wheeling on trails and drive it on the road. The Wrangler jk was good off road, but not much fun to drive on the street. The improvements in the Wrangler jlu make it the closest thing jeep offers to match the legendary XJ. In this age it's the closest we'll going to get.

  • @Gmtail

    Love my JLU Rubicon, and I'm coming from an old CJ, TJ and JK. The CJ 7 is still my favorite for beating the crap out of, however the JL gives you more capability, and the Winshield is almost as easy to fold down as the CJ was plus I get all the modern amenities. It still has a slightly rougher Wrangler ride, however it's a lot more controlled vs the JK. Overall I think the JL is a great overall design vs function machine.

    I know I’m late tot he party m ( almost a year later) but In the market for my first Jeep. On the fence between a Sahara or rubicon . Yes I know the obvious a rubicon is better off road...but ... I personally like the look of the rubicon better. It would be my daily driver.
    Awesome vid, really enjoyed it. Very informatively day funny lol.

    I have driven my JK to and from work, weekend four wheeling, and wherever else I decide to go now for over 85k miles. Just because you can’t hear your heartbeat driving down the road doesn’t mean it’s held together with paper clips.. A statement like that only reveals your ignorance. This is one of the most durable vehicles I’ve ever owned. And with a 3” lift and 35” tires will go anywhere I point it. If you don’t like it don’t buy it for crying out loud...

    Damn FCA is killing it in the truck and SUV market, and this is coming from a current Raptor owner. That video was good, would be cool to get a few more drive-by shots to hear the exhaust and some different angles of the exterior. Also if we're talking daily driving, I didn't hear you mention if was the I-4 or V-6, and how was the gas mileage? The old ones were quite rough over expansion joints and the rear end would side-step, brakes a bit mushy and steering would wander with not much on-center. Is the new one better in those respects?

    • @TheDrewJohnsonExperience
      @TheDrewJohnsonExperience  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a V6 and the mileage was just about what you'd expect - I did mostly city driving and probably averaged 16-ish MPG. It's not rough over expansion joints but still does side-step a bit, but not nearly as badly as before. Steering and brakes are also much improved, but it's still a Wrangler at the end of the day. Overall, though, a very decent SUV that you really could drive every day.
