Similar to this species, in my country we have "pseudomyrmex simplex", local to a bunch of countries from central and south america, aswell as in the caribbean, like in my case, DR. i have spotted it also near dead twigs and branches. according to my research, it has been found in queenless nests, (indicating high polydomy) and also in nests with more than one functional dealate queen, but apparently is still casified as monogynous, i still struggle to wrap my head around that. They are also monomorphic.
There are other species sharing this bodyshape, but i have never seen other species, only this one

    I have many name suggestions:
    1. Nemy (African Origin) meaning “sweet”
    2. Anwen (Welsh Origin) meaning “Sweet and most beautiful”
    3. Vevina (Scottish Origin) “Sweet lady”
    4. Amla (Arabic Origin) meaning “Sweet by nature”
    5. Soma (Sanskrit Origin) meaning “Lunar nectar”
I picked these 5 because they all correlate around their species craving for sweets, and I thought it was only fitting to name her Royal Highness after her sweet tooth.

So long time watcher but I think this is the first time I've ever commented. I really don't have a good idea for the name but honestly I think the habitat needs to be as natural as possible. Being that this species is already noted to be very hard to rear an entire colony in captivity I think the best choice is to find some slightly hollow branches stretched over the rest of the terrarium to make it seem more natural with melebugs placed in there so it can mimick their natural state as much as possible. I understand the desire to be able to see them but we have a responsibility to keep them in a way that provides the best possibility to thrive so we can see them in as natural way as possible and they can feel at their best. Lol just my thoughts.

For a habitat, how about an ant tower with branches stacked in a vertical position around the perimeter like a palisade. Run a grove down each branch piece on the side facing the glass and drill some random holes along the sides to encourage exploration and boring to other branches.

The name Willow would definitely fit for this queen. Since the name "Willow" is an unique female name of English origin and means “slender” or “graceful”. The name is also derived from the willow tree which has a slender shape and graceful branches.
Plus: I believe a terrarium would be best suited and make an entertaining video, maybe towards the future you can move that colon into the ant house

She’s super cool and kinda funny, a lot more personality than most ants seem to have.
Also her name could be Joan, like Joan of ark but instead she’d be Joan of bark.
And in terms of their habitat you could make a large network of tubes with the red tape over them, you would be able to see the entire nest and it would be like being inside of branches.

For names I can recommend Lissome and Svelte, fancy, but matches up with the species as both words mean thin, slender, and graceful. For the container maybe you could just attack cut twigs towards the glass wall to view them, though some twigs will probably not be viewable for long with this idea.

I suggest for the Queen, "Selinderella" Since she still has to do her work (hunting/foraging) while she is founding her colony. And for the colony "Selendrix" since they thrive in a matrix of slender branches in trees.
Also, the flat brooding chamber AC sells should be an excellent starter place until you can get an aquarium setting built for them.

I also wanted to ask some things regarding the illegal importing of foreign ants. While I agree 100% with everything you’ve said about WHY bringing in foreign ant species unregulated could be disastrous, I would like to know your opinion on these:
is there a way (in your opinion) that foreign ants could be safely kept within a different territory?
How do you feel about other species, inverts especially, that are imported? I.e. Isopods, mantids, tarantulas, roaches? Do you feel that keeping these species is different, and safer? I know it would be a lot easier for an ant colony to potentially become invasive than say a species of tarantula, but I would like your thoughts, especially now when the LACEY act may be permanently affecting how us Americans keep exotics!

    • @UmbreonLuv1
      @UmbreonLuv1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

For most creatures I would say I'd love to be able to own in any country or region responsibly. However, with ants, the main reason they are hard to keep in other countries other than their own is that they are escape artists. You could have as many precautions as you can in place to make sure they don't, but even antscanada has had full colonies escape from their enclosures. If there was a way to *guarantee* that they can't escape, then I'd be fine seeing them outside of their own countries.
Ants are just so small, have massive colonies, and can easily overpower native species that it's just a huge risk if a colony escapes. Same with any small species of bug really that isn't kept alone. In the US, if I remember right, the honeybee that everyone knows about is actually invasive and out competes native bee populations, but most bee keepers use the invasive species to produce honey or help their own farms/gardens. You just have to be careful when you have insects that could do damage to your area if not housed properly.

    • @HiHi-eo8cr

Everyone: we gotta make sure those black market smugglers don't take drugs into other/our countries
Black market smugglers: hehehe they'll never suspect we are smuggling ANTS!
Seriously tho, that is a massive problem and is unfortunate. I don't really even get the point of smuggling ants, or why you'd not just go look for an ant or get a non invasive species. Its probably a good thing that got caught, because only a careless ant keeper would buy polish ants and not do any research. No offense to anyone reading, i myself would be one of those careless ant keepers if i had ants. Its why im not a pet owner.
