      It would depend on where the ground cable was connected. In the bearing you could have arcing happen to the ball or roller bearings. Which could cause pitting on the surfaces. Once you wear through the thin hard layer the part won't last long. On a lathe anything that interferes with it's smooth operation is all bad.

    To all those clever craftsmen in this art of workmanship. I have done similar things many times with quite with simple tools with good result. And im not from India, but Norway (yes, the very expensive country)! The guys here shows very good skills in performing perfectionism. Most of the comments are telling that the end result of the repair is expensive and much weaker than original part. Ok, possible, but this is not the reason they fix the machine part? They just want to show their skills. AND, they actually earn money from youtube if they got a lot of clicks and comments! So who is the winner here?

    Amazingly skillful and smart machinist. I could see where he was going with this repair, but the way he went about it is stunning to me. He didn't have to think too long and knew exactly how he would do it. He has a good memory for measurements. In case of an emergency with no replacement parts avaliable, this appears to be a great fix. I am only a bit doubtful about welding on a lathe as that could damage bearings, but for this type of work, they're probably not too much concerned about this. 😏

    It's a shaft, not an axle, because it has splines, and the repair method is incorrect, as it weakens it considerably.
    The appearance is beautiful, but functionality is key.

  • @MikeBanks2003
    @MikeBanks2003 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I use a mix of powdered silver brazing rod and flux mixed with water on the thread, and drill a tiny hole through the tube with the internal thread for some kinds of repairs. I do not think the method shown here is good enough but having said that, on the thread I would use a metallic filler with strength properties. My go-to for low temperatures, is silver brazing. Apply the paste to the threads then screw it on until it touches the base of the axel, then heat the whole thing with a torch, or several torches, and when it is hot enough, tighten the tube and heat until some flux metal will escape from the bleed hole you drilled. When it is cooled, drop it into HOT, not cold water. One then can if one wishes weld the flange to the axle using as elastic a rod as one can get. Bronze welding may be superior. I back-step all such welds.
    The alternative to all of this is to drill the centre of the broken pieces, put in a thin straight rod to align them, true the surfaces so that they are clean and have a small space equivalent to the metal removed, then using a mould surrounding both pieces, make a thermite join using an appropriate alloyed powder, re-temper the whole thing, then when cold, machine off any excess thermite deposit. Using an induction oven and some fry ammonia, nitro-harden and temper the entire part. This I feel is the best way, quicker, leaves the original splines functional, and is often as strong or stronger than the original part.

It's not going to fit because the threads are not where they are supposed to be. The better solution would be to take the part from another disabled tractor or get a new one.

    So let me get this straight. The original axle, which was solid, broke. After the "repair" it now has just a small portion of the axle welded together. It might last a few revolutions at best and probably not that long under stress. One more small problem. The original axle had threads on the inside of the splines next to the hub and now there are on the outer side of the splines. Close enough I guess.

    My main concern is their health and safety. Give them safety gloves, boots, goggles (face guard) and ear defenders.
    No matter where people in the world, everyone should have protection.

    Funny - it comes in with threads next to hub, leaves with threads at end of axel. But the work was pretty.

      The change in the design was on purpose. You can see how they discussed it at 0:48, and then he explains it at 1:20. Looks like they are modifying an old part coming from a different tractor (it is rusty) to fit it on the broken one. May not last for very long, but perhaps long enough to do the job.

    Mkay, we've watched dozens of these "repairs". Always the same. Some lathe work. Some welding. Some more lathe work. Aaaaand.... it's done! Never any bevelling, warming up, or heat treatment. And never any hint as to how many seconds the repair lasted. I feel for these folks but it's not going to put any money in their pocket, in the long run, if they do substandard work, unlike how it's done anywhere else in the developed world. Most places do not do the extra steps just for the fun of it, or as tradition-- no, there are very good reasons why parts are thrown away, or carefully bevellled, carefully pre-heated, carefully welded with the correct rod materials, and then finally heat-treated. I wish these folks the best but They're not following best or even adequate practices.

      Utter ignorance. Tractor back in action in an hour while waiting for days or weeks for replacement part... all at likely 1/100th the cost you would charge to sustain your ridiculously overconsumptive lifestyle.

      @@planetvegan7843 You have a point, partially. But statistics don't lie. That country has just about the lowest productivity per worker, in the whole world. So hard workers, yes. Working efficiently, very much not so. Unfortunate.

    Not much point in threading on the first repair section before welding when the splined section is merely pressed on before welding.

    Originally it was possibly a forged unit. Afterwards you have a brittle layer cake. The torsion is only absorbed by a weld seam. The multi-tooth also becomes narrower, meaning the load on the flanks is higher. Faith can move mountains.
