I don’t even lock my bike up a lot of the time. I take the key out to prevent joyriders, and that’s all I have to do at the community pool. If some kid in my neighborhood took my ebike, I’d find them within a day. Too many people know that’s my bike and they’d tell me if they saw it. If I’m going to the grocery, a basic chain lock is plenty. All you are doing is deterring crimes of convenience. The chance of some committed bike thief coming by with tools in the random 45 minutes a month I’m inside a store is approximately zero. If I’m picking up take out or something, I just take the key out. I can generally see the bike the whole time from inside the restaurant. I would not lock up anything all day outside beyond the cheapest manual bike that nobody would want to steal. To commute I use an EUC I bring inside with me.
Put a rack on your bike and a basket.. carry a motorcycle cover .. lock the bike and cover it with the cover. Only the wheel bottoms will be seen. Nobody will remove the cover and cut a lock then take the bike.
I have a Kryptonite Evolution folding lock, and a WSDCAM wireless alarm on my E-Bike. Should be plenty given I live in a small rural town. I'd want a 2nd, and most likely a 3rd equally robust lock if I lived in a city.
Bike theft is a crime of casual opportunity where I live, so a regular U-lock and strong cable for the seat are enough, especially in front of a Costco or Target, which get a lot of foot traffic. A Kryptonite Evoltuion U-lock and cable set runs around $50-70, depending on whether or not it’s on sale.
However, I grew up in an area where bike theft is high, so I have a set of heavy-duty chains and U-locks (Kryptonite New York Fughettaboutit) when I’m feeling especially paranoid. 😅 Those run around $100-150 each, depending on where and when you buy them.
I find the Kryptonite Evolution chains a good compromise, and stronger than the folding locks. They are heavier and more cumbersome, but are still manageable, being lighter and less costly than their New York series.
Not typically a concern where I am, but I am curious about the U-locks from Hiplok and Litelok that are built to resist grinding tools. They cost around $300 or so though.
As others mentioned, a motorcycle cover with a lock deters thieves more than just locks. They can’t tell at a glance if it’s worth their time or the amount of effort and tools it would take.
You don't live in a high crime area. You just need a simple lock
Locks are a deterrent. If the thief wants it, they'll get it. Batteries are also attractive and easier to take. I use a Seatylock Forever folding lock with a medium chain. Don't hear much about Seatylocks but they have better reviews than Abus. I paid $180 CAD. I have a couple of Kryptonite U locks but the folding lock is more convenient.
Thanks for another excellent video. I've been hearing that we should spend 10% of the bike's worth on locks, have you heard that before? Right now I have a u lock (only $20, I need better) and a Kryptonite folding lock ($80), but I'm still thinking of getting theft insurance. I have to park my bike out of my sight where I live and where I work. As you can tell, I clearly worry.
I have not heard of a percentage on a lock ratio to bike price. I'd be willing to pay the amount that can secure the bike without any fear of theft.
big hardened chain. 3/8 at least. then an alarm and a tracker and a ulock. where you live there are all kind of trash.
Kryptonite evolution.
this is my biggest worry:(
They have locks that are so good that the company will pay for your bike if someone can steal it. Don't be cheap!
Takes like 3-4 cutting wheels to get through the lock and 15 minutes to do.. Nobody will cut on that lock changing cutting wheels for 15 minutes.
Not sure what the point would be of having a bike that you don't have a place to park. I lock mine to whatever is handy, but I also consider a lock on a bike to be the same as locking a car door to protect items inside; anyone determined is going to get around the lock. It's only casual protection. If you're that concerned, I'd opt to take transit or just walk to your destination.
Owning an e-bike isn't dependent on parking it. Many folks just ride for pleasure around there neighborhoods. If you are wanting to park it is there a lock or locks that can be trusted is what my question is.
How about a skunk lock
Grinder resistant lock?
