My ebike was stolen off the front of my house overnight. Luckily, a neighbor to the thief saw my craigslist post about my missing bike and they reported it to the police. It's just not right that people feel the need to take someone else's property, especially during these times. Thank you for this video!
I had very old Trek bike, I use to keep it outside door almost every night. Luckily the theft was rookie and tried to break my strong locker but he failed. After that i keep my bike inside my home.
My bike was stolen last night around 11:30pm, got me down big time. This morning I was out the door 8am and heading straight for the tweaker camps around town. Found my bike in someones makeshift tent, got my bike back. Buying a new lock tomorrow.
CONGRATULATIONS I don’t know you but GLAD you GOT YOUR BIKE BACK ! And you being IMMEDIATELY PRO ACTIVE surly was key to your success instead of waiting on the police ALLS WELL THAT ENDS WELL 👍🏿
You sounded very Canadian when you said “I only rode the bikes once, I hope it is out there in the hands of someone who can really use it. I know it’s hard times out there for a lot of people”
Very sorry to hear about the brazen thieves targeting your complex. Unfortunately we have let things slip until now there is absolutely no penalty/punishment for property crimes. This is the system we have allowed to be put in place and now we are all paying the price. Wish I could find a torture test style review of the best bike locks on the market today.
@@johne9341 You can thank the democrats who in the USA, maybe in California specifically, they reportedly don't pursue theft of goods under a certain limit. But that's what people vote into office in the name of "equality". Edit: You know, the blue line haters.
He should have put a note on his bike: "Dear Bike Thief, i'm sorry i had to lock it up. Sorry. I hope you sell it to somebody nice who could really use it."
I don't understand that attitude at all. I just got 2 electric bikes and I'm planning on putting trackers on them. That way I can track him down like a dog and extract a pound of flesh when I recover them and perhaps get him to reconsider his life of crime. Of course, I would go armed in case he's uncooperative. To be clear I wouldn't kill someone for stealing my bike, but I would if he threatened my life, which happens.
I started to feel bad until you showed compassion for the thief. I dont care what people are going through. You don't steal other people's hard earned values. I don't have the money to replace mine or pay the deductible. you must have the cash to replace it.
Yes… nonsense…. Compassion is a good thing but excusing theft is lame. 🙄 These are not folks stealing to feed their kids or needing a bike to get to work. Come on. This was organized and brazen. When there’s no consequences to taking other peoples property people will begin to feel it’s their right. Pretty soon dopey people will let thieves steal under a certain amount and not make it a crime if this kind of bleeding heart liberalism catches on… ooops they did just that …. In this day following this pandemic time. Who’d a thunk it. 🙄
I feel sorry that you can't feel empathy. Even without the Cash to replace it, I could imagine eventually beeing compassionet for them. Who known. Everyone handle such things differently
@@jelenar1939There’s having empathy and then there’s being a fool, I have empathy up to a point and that point stops when you steal rather than trade you sweat for honest money. I grew up with nothing and worked my butt off for what I have, if I catch you stealing from me I won’t be calling the police, as a former street kid myself I’ll be handing out justice they’ll understand and won’t soon forget.
100% agree. Thieves see compassion as tolerance; it's just an enabling behavior. If you don't want theft to become increasingly rampant, don't tolerate thievery. Period.
I'd recommend getting an alarm disc brake lock as well as a heavy duty chain, alarms draw attention that thieves don't want. I have two stainless steel alarm disk break locks that are the front and back plus a Kryptonite magnesium alloy 13mm hex link chain. Like you said the chain is harder to cut with a grinder but it's vulnerable to bolt cutters so you want something to take the mechanical advantage away. The hexagonal shape of the links distributes the pressure, while the alloy and large gauge all combine to make that harder to do without a massive set of bolt cutters. But as you mentioned if there's a will there's a way, all you can do is put more obstacles in their path. Glad you're doing well and it wasn't a really expensive bike though it still sucks to have happen to you. Keep up the great work!
I whole-heartedly agree on the disc rotor lock with super loud motion activated alarm. Had Court had that, perhaps the entire lot of bikes stolen might have been saved by spooking off the thieves! These rotor locks are relatively inexpensive and compact too -- two additional wins for this type of lock.
Number ONE. Never leave an expensive bike unattended for longer than it will take to steal it. If you make it EASY its gonna be gone. Punk 3 skunk locks on your bike. And a tracker or two. And you will make the lowlifes life very uncomfortable. The whole reason people do wrong is because they think they will get away with it. When you turn up at their house with some mean looking friends like I did when My M1 PRO was stolen. It literally puts the fear of god into them.
Sorry Court!! I use a 10' kryptonite chain, goes through both wheels and frame. It weighs 10lbs and I get a few looks when I lock up my bike. But its always been there when I get back. 🤞
@@gn_ghost4757 Welp, at least the lock wasn't the weak point! (Sorry about your bike!) Mine's locked to a table and bike rack, probably 300lbs, gonna be tough to take it all! True story, I live in a gated community with 24hr security, but due to covid they've been short-handed and had some gaps. We don't have garages, just patios, many bikes are locked outside. This week a thief stole a neighbors bike during a security gap overnight, but not two others that had kryptonite locks. We assume the thief looked at the other bikes because the covers were removed. No lock or situation is perfect, but I'm happy with my lock.
Man, I just stumbled upon this video while looking for reviews on Kryptonite's TKO folding lock, and though this video wasn't necessarily relevant to what I was looking for, I couldn't stop watching simply due to your positivity. What a fantastic freaking guy to have that kind of attitude after such a horrible series of events. Best to you and yours. Keep being awesome.
Did you ever get that lock? I ended up getting the ‘Kryptonite keeper folding combination lock’ And I’m trying to find out if it’s east to pick/ east to cut through
@@Lohanujuan I ended up getting a heavy chain lock. I don't recall the brand or model, but it was one of the most heavy duty available at Walmart. At the end of the day, we don't ride our bikes often, and this should serve to "keep honest people honest."
Bro, you are too damn nice and forgiving and understanding. If half the people in the world had even half the compassion and understanding that you displayed here, the world would be a much better place. God bless you, man.
Being for forgiving and understanding is great, but, if there’s no accountability, get ready for your city, your community, etc. to go to poop. th-cam.com/video/WijoL3Hy_Bw/w-d-xo.html
Wire up the garage so there is live mains current going through the windows. Then set up a camera to film the thieves being thrown across the lawn as their bolt cutters make contact. Now THAT'S a TH-cam video that would get views!😁
I wonder: did that bike in the video with the big covered chain get passed over when yours and others were taken? Is that the current go-to for high security? It looked like that was the only lock not broken and on the ground. I keep my ebike inside, but my main concern is going in to a grocery or other store where it is out of sight for 5 or 10 minutes. eBikes are magnets for thieves, so I guess i have to carry a heavy lock any time I plan on the bike being out of sight for even a few minutes. Sigh. EDIT: Lock picking lawyer reviews that lock and notes that is the "lowest security rating of all Abus locks at 7." And btw, someone who breaks through bars like that and then steals a number of bikes is a professional thief--not someone having "hard times" and "might be able to use it."
The Abus UGrip Bordo 5700 is a low security lock. It was actually the first lock I bought for bike commuting from my LBS. Then I read online how it was actually non-hardened steel. I returned it and ordered the Abus Bordo 6500, a much heavier duty folding lock. It's rated as Gold by Sold Secure, and has thicker hardened steel bars. I just recently got an Abus Granite X-Plus 540 U-lock rated Diamond Level. It's pretty secure and "only" weighs 3.2 lbs. Of course now I recently read about the new Hiploc D1000 U-lock that is supposed to be angle grinder resistant. It's rated as Motorcycle Diamond (a new category); and retails for $345 U.S. I guess it was so popular that it's been sold out for a while.
He should have put a note on his bike: "Dear Bike Thief, i'm sorry i had to lock it up. Sorry. I hope you sell it to somebody nice who could really use it." Thanks for the vid! Kelowna B.C.
A lot of bike and tool thefts aren't to "feed families". We still have opiate and fetanyl crises going on. It may be comforting to think about "noble thieves" but there are easier ways to get rent money
It's a cheap bike. People spend more on just smokes in a month. Try having a 3k bike stolen and see how you feel. But if you are gonna leave a bike at the mercy of thieves worth over a grand. At least have some fun with the bastards. I recommend skunk locks and trackers. Make them SUFFER stealing your bike. And then make them regret it even more when you track them down. I've already done it.

Yep, same kind of jerk who steals is the kind to get angry at being thwarted. Spokes and cables cut, tires and seats slashed, frames damaged, you name it. That's why imo it's honestly not worth riding a nice bike unless you have secure storage, or you buy serious full coverage insurance.
@Move_I_Got_This Maybe a cheap bike that’s also decorated all girly, AND is too small to be comfortable for most full-grown men? That’s what I ride. I accidentally forgot to lock my bike up TWICE recently, and though most people drive where I am, I’m sure that if someone wanted to steal it, they could’ve. I’m just grateful that the bike was still there when I returned. Lots of kids’ bikes are available for cheap or for free, since kids outgrow them so quickly, and I suppose cheap bikes (just a little over $100 bought new) w/ 20” wheels aren’t appealing to most bike thieves, since they can get a hold of kids’ bikes easily. My cheap 20” folder creaks when I carry even ~20 lbs of cargo (and I’m just under 110 lbs), so I’m thankful to have a bike that does its job, but doesn’t appeal to thieves. Fingers crossed that it remains this way. 🤞
@Move_I_Got_This It does suck when people “have” to be so desperate for even a few bucks. As a society, we need to do better. If the problem is poor character, I’ve got some effective ideas, but they’d be a tad controversial amongst certain groups of people. 😉
FYI, some information I recently got from my insurance (Allstate): regular bikes (non-electric) are property that is covered under homeowner's insurance. Electric bikes are motorized vehicles so are not covered under homeowner's insurance, you need a separate motorized vehicle policy.
Yes just another way the insurance companies duck out of paying for your losses when you get robbed, or so they can collect more money from you for doing nothing.

I'd love a link to a folding bike that can also be used as a shopping cart that's sold in the USA. That sounds like a much better option than heaving a 70+ lb folding bike into a grocery store's shopping cart.
This is sad. I had a scooter stolen years ago that was parked and locked right under a security camera at our apartment complex. Fast forward to today and I just bought a RadCity5 Plus and don't take chances. I keep it inside my apartment. I want to be able to go gracery shopping and up to the college soon though which will mean I have to leave it unattended. I just bought a ABUS Bordo X-Plus 6500 folding lock and a separate Wdscam bike alarm but still won't feel entirely comfortable until I get a wire lock for my wheels and another thick primary lock so that I have 2 primary locks. Sounds like overkill but I can't afford to buy a bike like this again anytime soon. I wonder if getting a thick chain lock or high end U lock would work better as a secondary to the ABUS folding lock I have. I plan to this use them side by side so hopefully a thief would need to have two different types of tools and a larger chuck of time to steal my bike.
Sucks to hear about the thievery. I'm on my 4th bike in the last 10 years, so not so bad, especially for living in Brooklyn. It appears that the longer the bike is stored, the higher the chance of theft, so a quick walk into the grocery store is usually safe after locking up decently, but overnight storage is waaaay riskier. My GF and I actually had both our bikes stolen together overnight. The thief unscrewed the parking sign (the bolts were by the curb) and slid the bikes up and over the top of the sign post. Not sure how they got up that high, but it happened. It would be great if the NYC police had a "bike sting month" and set up operations around the city catching thieves and canning their @ss in jail for at least 30 days.
Thank you for this PSA and YES ....... we are living in some CRTAZY TIMES! I got my bike stolen about 3 weeks ago, it was cable-locked near the front door of my local super market. The super market cameras were NOT working. I filed a police report and the Police are UNDER STAFFED ,also my stolen bike is NOT high priority on the crime list. The thief has my bike up for sale on Facebook and I was also able to find where he lives & works. I have purchased a new bike (trek DS1) and I now have & use 2 TOP RATED LOCKS- 1 D LOCK and 1 HEAVEY CHAIN LOCK AND A CABLE..
Love your positive attitude toward the times we live in and am so sorry your bike was stolen. Thankfully I live in a small town and have a garage to store my bike but that doesn’t mean for a second that someone couldn’t break in and steal my bike. Wishing you the best!
I don't, as its the root of the problem. People like him vote bleeding hearts that empty the jails and are pro-criminals teaching them that there are no real negative consequences for crime putting the risk to reward ratio so far in their favor. So crime increases, and they just shrug their shoulders and go "I don't understand why". Google Singapore crime rate, and you'll see its virtually non-existent here and part of that is thanks to things like mandatory death penalty for drug dealers with over a 99% conviction rate and under one year execution of sentencing, with strict immigration policy, very well funded mostly plain-clothes police force ready to jump into action, and a population that is extremely anti-crime and will turn in any criminals to guarantee no one can have a career as a criminal in Singapore unlike in blue cities in the US where the lawmakers even want to give felons the right to vote since they know the felons will vote for them. 😡
I got my first ebike just 2 days ago and I have been mulling over which locks I need. This video helped me pick [no pun intended] which one to get. Sorry about the theft, Court, and thank you for the PSA!
Yeah, it's terrible in Vancouver. I see reddit posts about people doing it pretty brazenly with body guards and then chopping the bikes out in the open. I like that police here are pretty friendly and non violent, but I also want property to be protected. I waited on hold for over an hour to file the police report, so they must have their hands full right now.
@@ElectricBikeReview @ElectricBikeReview.com its crazy how bad its getting. My team and I helped a customer recover and rebuild his Stromer st3 after it was stolen. Then a week later I was on my way to the store (amego) saw a guy cutting the locks on 2 ncms so I chased him away and brought the 2 bikes to the shop and contacted the owner through a Serial number search. And thats just 2 of the many recoveries we did this year. I dislike bike thieves. People work hard to buy their bikes they don't deserve to have them stolen.
That's a really great suggestion that I hadn't thought of. I don't know how many people were involved, because several bikes went missing each time. Maybe they targeted specific bikes (there was an older one next to mine that was not even locked, and they left it). Perhaps this would discourage riding away... but it's also a dirty inconvenience and it makes riding less fun each time. I feel like we lose more than just our bikes with stuff like this, we also lose our interest in cycling and our freedom to move freely. It sucks.
Yeah they demonstrated this on London City streets. Guy going around, during the day, cutting bike locks and people didn't stop to ask. One of those psychology experiments.
Good chance no one was around. It only takes a few seconds to grind through most locks. Theif can be through the lock and riding away on the bike in under 90 seconds. Even if someone did here, my first thought upon hearing a random power tool isn't that someone is stealing.
Folding locks (even the high end ones) are also vulnerable to nut splitters. Don't know how often this method is used in the wild, but this method makes minimal noise compared to an angle grinder so I wouldn't trust one of those.
I am sorry for your bike stolen. I have a question by the way. I don't understand 0:28~0:35.. another video on locks also says it is better to use 2 locks, 1 solid lock on bike frame and 1 flexible cable lock on wheels... but I don't see why it is better, câble locks are cuttable in few seconds.. could you explain, please?
I'm also a Vancouver resident and just picked up my first ebike. This video was very helpful because I have a chain lock but it weighs a lot and is a hassle to take everywhere, I think a folding lock would be nice for small errands
I hid an Apple AirTag in the lock box on my RadRunner 3. It won't stop someone from stealing it, but if it does get stolen, I might be able to get the bike back.
@@manFromPeterborough dude, I don't mow my lawn, don't put up Christmas lights, have tacky plants, and my screen door is torn up. Gotta look almost destitute lol.
The longest Kryptonite chain I could find was 5’ 3”. I got one for each of our ebikes. Think I’ll need to get a couple of d-locks to supplement and maybe a cable for the seat.
Sorry to hear about your bike Court! Kryptonite has a program that offers money back if the thieves break through their chains, definitely worth it for piece of mind and a way to get money for the trouble.
I would put something big and heavy in front of that window (an old refrigerator for example) or a proximity alarm that would go off if they got into the room again
I can't believe that people justify bike theft by supposing the other person needed it. Now that you don't have a bike, do you feel justified in stealing one from someone else?
Hes canadian so he has been programmed to have sympathy for the criminal. No offense to him, just the way their country, and as of lately ours, prosecutes criminals again not trying to be offensive.
I've had a few bikes stolen over the course of 15 years or so and they were just mid grade type mountain bikes..i just purchased a rad runner...so I'm looking at locks now as we speak.
The problem with the mega locks is weight. I bought the kryptonite forgetabout it lock, its 14lbs. 14 additional lbs on a bike might as well be 30 in feel. Even an ebike you feel wherever the lock is with every corner or maneuver. I guess thats better than theft, but I personally like the enjoy the experience as well as get there.
You're correct, there's a noticeable trade-off with most of the premium locks. I was focused on price, but weight is usually a big factor as well. I'm not a huge heavy guy, so the increased weight is proportionally greater and does impact my riding and enjoyment too. I usually keep my bikes inside whenever I can, behind a real security system... but not everyone has that option or the space (or the supportive significant other, lol). Thanks for the input!
@@ElectricBikeReview Some of the best security would be a right-wing community or population. They carry guns, don't go stealing as poor scums of society, and care about policies that penalize the thieves and vandals.
I live in Vancouver as well, specifically in Vancouver East, so it's a very rough area near the Downtown Eastside. I just bought an ebike, so I'm particularly concerned about security. I will be keeping it inside the house, but I will be commuting to the East Broadway Skytrain, for those familiar (a busy transit hub). What brand/model bike locks do you recommend? I plan on having two locks, a secondary frame lock (cafe lock), and a primary heavy duty lock. I heard Foldylocks are better than the ABUS Bordo 6000 folding lock, but maybe a Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit U-Locks might be better? I heard chain locks are good, but cumbersome and heavy to carry around. Recommendations?
I live in that area, too. For good locks, I recommend getting on the waiting list for the Hiplok D1000 (check out their website to learn why it's a really good lock--or so they say anyway). There's been good reviews from people who test locks of the Abus Granit extreme 59 260mm (31cm/12" or bigger) and the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Chain 1415 & New York Disc Lock. Even the higher quality folding locks have been shown to be pretty easy to defeat but could work as an another layer. Added locks could be something like the YOHOOLYO Disc Lock Alarm if you have disk brakes, an Abus (level 9) or other strong frame lock/cafe lock like you've mentioned, a hand brake lock, quick-release pedals (you can't ride off with a bike without pedals) and take the seat and/or front wheel off or use locking skewers. Make sure to check what you're locking to that it's fixed to the ground and isn't hiding that it's been cut. I've seen this many times, especially end pieces of the coil type public bike lock stands (the bolts get removed) and the stands that have the thin triangles to lock to because they're easy to cut.
There are locks out there that can only be defeated by using an angle grinder. You can see by the dents and the way the property was damaged these thieves used bolt cutters.
I’ve invested in Kryptonite gold chain and u locks 2 on my ebike Tandem and 2 on my other two solo ebikes which are stored in my garage I’ve used anchor points as well as heavy duty steel cycle barriers all bolted to the concrete floor using shear nuts. Even though I live in a relatively safe town here in the UK the cost of these bikes in a lot of money.
You need a decent alarm for your home and bike, Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can text you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything happens, time is the most critical factor!
A simple padlock through the back disc will keep someone from hopping on your bike and riding off on it. Easy and quick for those fast trips to the store and back.
Be careful every time from now on. I have a KRYPTONITE lock and chain. And it's very heavy duty, It was $166.00. And it's very reliable. Plus I have an alarm on the bike, and insurance. But I keep my ride in my house. Have a good day.
Howdy, sorry for your loss but Love the attitude. Life is not about "things"...I've had tools "take a walk" and said someone must've needed them more than I...
It's not like people who steal bikes are doing it to screw you over. They are doing it out of desperation, because they too need transportation and unfortunately our society is not based around peoples needs but rather corporate greed. The owning class, those who control our society, are unforgivable. No one should feel so desperate that they feel the need to steal from others just to survive
@@canadiansmarties Different motivations exist for stealing; it's not solely about survival, and many thefts aren't driven by survival needs. Some people steal out of greed or because they don't want to work. In high crime areas, others steal for entertainment and unneeded luxury items. There are those who don't understand the consequences and steal impulsively or treat it like a sport. As someone who lives in a high crime city, is involved in this topic and even communicates with thieves, I can attest to the variety of reasons for theft. I could give several more. Ultimately, suggesting that bikes are stolen purely out of desperation and survival needs, or tying all of it to corporate greed, is simply narrow, oversimplified, and not true.
@@canadiansmarties people who break in and steal multiple bikes by cutting multiple bars are not doing it out of desperation, they are doing it because they don't give a shit about anyone else, it's just numbers for them.
@@UhOhUmm you can think what you want but I don't see people risking jail time for an income as anything but desperation. Unlike the cartoons most "bad guys" aren't doing it for fun or because they enjoy making others suffer. I'm not saying it's justified or ok that they do so just that if you want to understand why people commit crime and how to stop it you have to address the root of the issue which is poverty, mental health, addiction, desperation in a system that lets people suffer constantly. We need societal change with supports for those in need if we want to truly address crime
@@TonyByte You're talking about the 1% exception, not the 99% rule, just because you've been programmed to think a certain way about society and certain types of people. Think a little bit harder my man.

Sorry to hear about that. I live in Vancouver, too. I don't know how well it works but I registered my bikes with Bike Index and 529 Garage. It will help you recover a bike if found but maybe not deterrence.
At the point that thieves are bringing in battery operated tools, and taking multiple bikes at once, you have progressed into the arena of professional thieves. They usually operate in groups with looks outs and most of the time an inside man to set up the thefts. These are not out of work or desperate people but dedicated thieves. This is what you see when you have criminals who have been in and out of jail numerous times, they just don't care about the consequences of being caught. It's long past time that criminals were actually punished harshly for their crimes instead of being coddled. Stop putting criminals in hotels with cable tv, air conditioning, and gyms. Institute hard labor, keep the jail livable but uncomfortable, no TV, no gyms, no conjugal visits, return jails to being punishment and maybe the criminals will fear being arrested again enough to stop being the parasites that they are now.
two words - killer drones. No lock, no fortress is totally defended, there is a tool for anything. I note your theft report includes a lot of tools I use the heavy flex Abus and it's heavy but no one has messed with it yet but my best defense is carrying my bike on my back whereever I go. Paladin, Have gun Will travel...
Those thieves aren't out there feeding themselves with your stolen bike. They stole it and will likely sell it to someone else at a discounted price. They stole it because they were LAZY and saw you ( all of the victims ) as just another way to avoid doing actual work . Reality is that you should be infuriated with the thievery; you should be stomping your feet at the police station, and at the manager of your apartments DEMANDING action and possibly a settlement for your losses. Otherwise, next time, be nice to the thieves and leave your wallet with your bike- so that they have to work less to steal the next round of bikes or whatever else they target. Damn Canadians sound like they were neutered at birth and have yet to grow a pair.
Ugh. But it's good to see you've kept your perspective. Bikes are just material objects. No one was hurt. But it does sound like they knew what they were doing, and given that you review many bikes, there is a high probability you were "cased" - specifically seen and targeted. That's not amateur work there.
Sorry to hear Court. I always worry about my e-bikes getting stolen as I love them both to pieces. I need to get a better lock as I only use a cable lock and haven't had them stolen yet in 4 years. I have trunk bags on all my bikes, but I need to figure out what better lock to get, and before seeing this video I was thinking about getting a folding ABUS lock like what got cut.
This totally sucks. A lot of bikes in my city are being stolen to support drug habits. Good karma on you for being so understanding, but what they did is wrong. No matter where we are in life, there’s always somebody with more and somebody with less. Stealing is wrong. Here’s to helping they are held accountable first and get some help.
My bro took my bike to go to 7-11 ,I said don't let it get stone ! It got stolen ! But he was walking home and undercover cop stops him tells him they have the bike ,turns out they staking out 711for robberies haha score one the good guys👍
Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit mini, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can TEXT you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything can happen, time is the most critical factor.
Good tips Michael. Is there a specific lock that texts alerts that you know of? I think ABUS has one with an audible alarm, but don't know about texting. I often mute my phone at night too, so maybe it wouldn't have helped in this particular situation :/
I walked out just as a thief was stealing our bikes at the mall. He had already sliced through the cables like they were butter. But he was doing all that while people were going in and out. don't make excuses for these thieves.
oh man - that is my old neighborhood. Exact same thing happened to us a few months back, the thiefs cut the bars of our garage gate. Even where they made the cut is the same (i always wondered why they didn't cut the lower bars, that way they could just crawl through. it looks kind of awkward to be climbing through that) . Our garage is constantly getting targeted, (one big reason thats stopping me from buying a nice ebike) anyways, I hope you get your bike back (did you register with Project 529?)
My wife's Cube (non-electric, but with a thick frame that looks "electric") found a new owner this past week. She used one of these *flat bar* foldi-locks. Judging by the crushed edges of the broken link, the new owner used *bolt cutters* to rip through the bar, probably in under five seconds. This happened in a high-traffic, public area, so speed of operation would have had to be high. The area was, sadly, also near an area where many of the residents are regular customers of the irregular pharmaceutical industry. Your bike is worth their next fix.
Still trying to figure out my lock situation. I know I can't use the lock I have for my pedal bike, but not sure if I need to spend $200 on a motorcycle lock. Will be using it for quick errands. Otherwise, bike will always be with me+insight. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thx
So sorry to hear about your bikes, I use a disk brake lock which has a motion alarm, it won't stop them from trying to take your bikes but at least it will alert you. They're really cheap, mine cost £15 here in the UK.
Wow, you are such a nice guy. Your compassion really shows for people who are out of work due to COVID and can't go to work but still have to pay rent. I'm impressed that you are able to wish enjoyment to the person who ends up with your bike. Amazing, inspiring, and uplifting!
Very sorry about the robbery! I've been very fortunate, only had my pump stolen off my bike frame, then forgot the new replacement in a shopping cart, and the same model pump fell off the clip and a car ran over it before I could retrieve it ha! (three $45 pumps!) I have the u-bolt type of lock that is good. Is that the same Abus folding lock they sell with the Reise & Muller electric bikes? I might get a R&M and wondering if I should get a lock better than that one. You have a Zen way about you with the robbery, like you still find some kind of peace or balance... Maybe Ekert Tolle, in Vancouver too, you guys are colleagues! Thanks for all of your fantastic reviews!
I just retired and traded my car for a Rad Runner Plus, currently I am using a chain and an abus padlock, I am thinking about also getting a folding lock for expedience and a ulock for speed and an alarm to get attention and maybe a disc brake lock with alarm just because
Dude!? How in the world do you hope your stolen bike is in the hands of someone who could use it? I hope the sorry sacks who stole my bike take a nose dive in the nearest slotted drainage cover.
I feel ya, I guess I was thinking of the person who actually ends up with the bike. The people who stole it are probably struggling financially or struggling with drugs (pretty common in Vancouver). The person who buys it will probably do so unaware that it's stolen, in some far away city... so, I hope they can at least enjoy the bike :D sorry to hear about your stolen bike though too :/
Exactly, these are tweekers stealing to get their drug fix. In California, thanks to prop 47, they are just released right away for anything they steal that is under $900. We're doomed
BTW, seeing your handle I can't help sharing this, I was listening to it a few mns ago! Enjoy and that goes for Court, something to cheer him up... Get the Skunklock or, when it's available, get the Hiplock D1000. Another one that may help (it's cheaper) is the Oxford LK348 Alarm-D PRO. Its alarm is 120 decibels.
Someone buying the tools to steal bikes aren't "in hard times". They _make_ hard times for people who can't afford to replace their stolen bikes

My ebike was stolen off the front of my house overnight. Luckily, a neighbor to the thief saw my craigslist post about my missing bike and they reported it to the police. It's just not right that people feel the need to take someone else's property, especially during these times. Thank you for this video!
Wtf were you keeping an ebike outside overnight for?
I had very old Trek bike, I use to keep it outside door almost every night. Luckily the theft was rookie and tried to break my strong locker but he failed.
After that i keep my bike inside my home.
Same just happened to me

He should have put a note on his bike: "Dear Bike Thief, i'm sorry i had to lock it up. Sorry. I hope you sell it to somebody nice who could really use it."
I don't understand that attitude at all. I just got 2 electric bikes and I'm planning on putting trackers on them. That way I can track him down like a dog and extract a pound of flesh when I recover them and perhaps get him to reconsider his life of crime. Of course, I would go armed in case he's uncooperative. To be clear I wouldn't kill someone for stealing my bike, but I would if he threatened my life, which happens.
No one is using it. It was converted into dope money within hours.
These are not folks stealing to feed their kids or needing a bike to get to work. 🙄

GPS trackers can be hidden inside the handlebar too.

Sigh.
EDIT: Lock picking lawyer reviews that lock and notes that is the "lowest security rating of all Abus locks at 7."
And btw, someone who breaks through bars like that and then steals a number of bikes is a professional thief--not someone having "hard times" and "might be able to use it."
I keep my bike inside my house. I recently got a folding bike to make that easier.

I live in NYC and the laws are made to protect the criminals. Just try to protect yourself or your property by hurting a criminal and you'll end up going to jail. The laws in NYC are made by corrupt politicians and honest people don't stand a chance of living a good life. The police are quitting because they're not allowed to harm criminals. They have to be gentle with thugs. It totally sux.
I’ve seen bikes that have been vandalized because they couldn’t steal them.
They do that so you leave them there, buying them more time to cut through whatever locks you have on them. Punctured tire is usually the first sign.
It’s nice having a bike that has little to no market value, for this reason.
Yeah, t his is one of the big reasons that I'm actually a fan of the cheaper ebikes... because then I'm less afraid to actually ride them ;)
@Move_I_Got_This Maybe a cheap bike that’s also decorated all girly, AND is too small to be comfortable for most full-grown men?
Someone needs to market “Roadmaster”stickers to put over the Trek, Specialized and Giant logos.

FYI, some information I recently got from my insurance (Allstate): regular bikes (non-electric) are property that is covered under homeowner's insurance. Electric bikes are motorized vehicles so are not covered under homeowner's insurance, you need a separate motorized vehicle policy.

As a bike designer, I wonder why folding bikes aren't more popular? Some can be used as shopping-carts too?
Shopping cart not to bad
I'd love a link to a folding bike that can also be used as a shopping cart that's sold in the USA. That sounds like a much better option than heaving a 70+ lb folding bike into a grocery store's shopping cart.
Brompton.
The safety of a bike is bears an inverse relationship to the time the thieves have on their hands, regardless of how expensive the lock is.
It appears that the longer the bike is stored, the higher the chance of theft, so a quick walk into the grocery store is usually safe after locking up
decently, but overnight storage is waaaay riskier.
30 days? Way too low, should be at least 6 month or more

You just don't mess with a guy's woman, car, and bike. Hell should hold a special place for these creeps.

Bike theft is the worst in toronto and Vancouver... sorry to hear about your bike.
What do you think about taking off the front wheel? That would be a good deterrent for a thief.
It sucks.
How the hell did no one hear an angle grinder in the freaking garage??
It happens more often than you think. Often times people do hear it, but don’t think to get involved.
Yeah they demonstrated this on London City streets. Guy going around, during the day, cutting bike locks and people didn't stop to ask. One of those psychology experiments.
it wasnt an angle grinder. no burn marks on the metal. it was a manual saw.
Good chance no one was around. It only takes a few seconds to grind through most locks. Theif can be through the lock and riding away on the bike in under 90 seconds.

Folding locks (even the high end ones) are also vulnerable to nut splitters. Don't know how often this method is used in the wild, but this method makes minimal noise compared to an angle grinder so I wouldn't trust one of those.

Sorry to hear about your bike Court! Kryptonite has a program that offers money back if the thieves break through their chains, definitely worth it for piece of mind and a way to get money for the trouble.

Sorry about your loss bro. Your take on the situation is far more positive tha Id be able to take.
I've had a few bikes stolen over the course of 15 years or so and they were just mid grade type mountain bikes..i just purchased a rad runner...so I'm looking at locks now as we speak.
Sorry for your bike, man, I know that feeling ;( ....never the less, that was a good video. Wish you all the best!!!

Your bike donations, directly corelates to your voting descions. Thank you for your understanding.. I am sure it bought a night of happiness for them.
Also, can you do a roundup review of tracking devices?
Unfortunately, portable angle grinders are cheaper than the best locks, so the criminals win again. You can't shoot 'em, so they have no fear.
I’ve invested in Kryptonite gold chain and u locks 2 on my ebike Tandem and 2 on my other two solo ebikes which are stored in my garage I’ve used anchor points as well as heavy duty steel cycle barriers all bolted to the concrete floor using shear nuts. Even though I live in a relatively safe town here in the UK
the cost of these bikes in a lot of money.
You need a decent alarm for your home and bike, Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can text you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything happens, time is the most critical
factor!
are you speaking of Vancouver Washinton state or Vancouver British Columbia Canada?
A simple padlock through the back disc will keep someone from hopping on
your bike and riding off on it. Easy and quick for those fast trips
to the store and back.
Nice
Thank you for posting this!!!!! Very helpful... sorry this happened to you. Glad for your positive attitude too!
Be careful every time from now on. I have a KRYPTONITE lock and chain. And it's very heavy duty,
It was $166.00. And it's very reliable. Plus I have an alarm on the bike, and insurance. But I keep my ride in my house.
Have a good day.
Howdy, sorry for your loss but Love the attitude. Life is not about "things"...I've had tools "take a walk" and said someone must've needed them more than I...
I was able to get the SkunkLock U-Lock a while back -- look it up. I wonder how that night would have unfolded if the thieves had cut into that! 😂
Your bike is in the hands of a thief.
Difficult times, but to steal someones mode of transportation so they can't work or get the necessities they need, unforgivable.
Well of the older locks, the Kryptonite forgettabout is ok. There are only two bike locks I know of that are actually designto resist angle grinders. Hiplok makes one of them.
I know a lot of ppl say chain locks are better because they're harder to keep still, but i wonder -- is that actually true?
Yeah, I feel frustrated about it, and politics and social systems in general lately... seems more like a parasitic situation than a symbiotic one.
Ugh. But it's good to see you've kept your perspective. Bikes are just material objects. No one was hurt. But it does sound like they knew what they were doing, and given that you review many bikes, there is a high probability you were "cased" - specifically seen and targeted. That's not amateur work there.
Oh no, I'm sorry that happened! Your ability to give others the benefit of the doubt is admirable.
Yeah, it's all good man! Of all the people in the world to lose a bike, it's probably easiest for me since I work in the space :D
Did the thieves take the best bikes or only the easiest to take. Did they leave any cause it was too much trouble?
is there any Lojack for bikes ? There needs to be
Sorry to hear this happened to you but I love your positive attitude about it. your videos have been really helpful to me, keep up the good work
Rock on! Glad to hear they've been helpful :D thanks for the comment and encouragement.
My bike also got stolen today any tips for looking for it
Don’t buy cheap, you do get what you pay for, go ABUS
What level of security was your Abbus lock? Sorry for what happened to you. Thanks for sharing! The topic is every bikers concern everywhere!
@@ElectricBikeReview I use two different alarms Boomerang Cyclotrac for texting and WSDCAM for loud noise and I use a Kryptonite D-lock
Anyway to put a tracker in a bike?
Angle grinders and bolt cutters will defeat most locks if given enough time. Cables are almost useless.

Wow dude i cant believe how much sympathy you showed to the thief. Come on, don’t blame yourself for not using a better lock. Larry
I walked out just as a thief was stealing our bikes at the mall. He had already sliced through the cables like they were butter. But he was doing all that while people were going in and out. don't make excuses for these thieves.
Did you confront him, if so what happened
@@THEK1NGSCLAN He ran like a scalded dog.
oh man - that is my old neighborhood. Exact same thing happened to us a few months back, the thiefs cut the bars of our garage gate. Even where they made the cut is the same (i always wondered why they didn't cut the lower bars, that way they could just crawl through. it looks kind of awkward to be climbing through that) . Our garage is constantly getting targeted, (one big reason thats stopping me from buying a nice ebike)
anyways, I hope you get your bike back (did you register with Project 529?)
That's a bummer! I would recommend a U-lock with a hardened steel shackle, they are much harder to cut. Good luck!
Court, how about a roundup review of bike locks you might recommend? I use a TiGR mini U-lock.
This doesn’t exist in Japan. Personal property isn’t stolen, wether it’s locked or not.
I know it's heavy, but I bought this Square link chain that is used on ships plus a lock from Denmark that they can't drill into
Very sorry about the robbery!
I just retired and traded my car for a Rad Runner Plus, currently I am using a chain and an abus padlock, I am thinking about also getting a folding lock for expedience and a ulock for speed and an alarm to get attention and maybe a disc brake lock with alarm just because
I feel your pain I’ve just had my E bike stolen it’s very upsetting
(I have no sympathy whatsoever for all the scums out there that have been stealing anything day in and day out).
Happy Holidays you guys...

Get the Skunklock or, when it's available, get the Hiplock D1000. Another one that may help (it's cheaper) is the Oxford LK348 Alarm-D PRO. Its alarm is 120 decibels.
