here's my list (not in order): 1. Cirith Ungol - frost and fire 2. Judas Priest - screaming for vengeance 3. Running Wild - gates to purgatory 4. Mercyful Fate - don't break the oath 5. Iron Maiden - Powerslave 6. Black Sabbath - Master of reality 7. Motörhead - overkill 8. Witchfinder General - death penalty 9. Tank - filth hounds of Hades 10. Raven - rock until you drop
Nice, my favorite genre. Here's my list (in no particular order): - Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell, - Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny, - Rainbow - Rising, - Motörhead - Overkill, - Accept - Restless and Wild, - Saxon - Strong Arm of the Law, - Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden, - Venom - Welcome to Hell, - Mercyful Fate - Melissa, - Grim Reaper - See You in Hell.
A totally respectable list. Definitely with you on Don't Break The Oath. I love Melissa, but it's always Oath, all day long. Satan and Tygers were surprises but I get it. They're great records. And that goddamn classic Venom album. My entry into that band back in '84. Huge love and nostalgia for that record.
Some outstanding picks here Matt. Satan, Tygers and Angel Witch are 10/10 albums and I'm not sure why they don't get talked about in the same way as the likes of some of the more popular HM albums. The deep cuts on British Steel are the best I think from that album.
Nice selection, kind of surprised to see Tygers and that Dio in there based on what you tend to show on the channel. British Steel is when Priest really simplified their sound from the 70's but its hard to argue with. My List no real order and I do over lap with your list a couple times it seems. 1. Judas Priest - Stained Class (this is when IMO metal really became its own genre, and the Blues were pretty much ripped out.) 2. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath 3. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind 4. Black Sabbath - Paranoid (yeah its over played but damn, what a foundational release for heavy metal) 5. King Diamond - Abigail (7/7/1777 is my favorite but just classic King cut after classic cut) 6. Manilla Road - Crystal Logic (Epic metal doesn't really get more epic) 7. Manowar - Hail to England (yeah the bass solo is can be skipped but every other cut is a true metal classic) 8. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (The debut of the Dio incarnation, a different Sabbath but still Sabbath) 9. Motorhead - Ace of Spades (pure swagger and balls) 10. Scorpions - Blackout (before they went total MTV metal, some great great songs)
I was well happy when he pulled that Tygers album out, the rest of the list could have been Bon Jovi and Def Leppard and I would have forgiven it after that.
I got that Satan album on vinyl, brand new, original, for a dollar out of a store's dollar bin, as a cut-out back in the 80's. One of the best dollars I ever spent. Got the original vintage vinyl on that Iron Maiden, Angel Witch, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Dio, Sabbath and Priest, too, bought back in the 70's and 80's. There's some advantages to being old... :)
I was also someone who made the leap to extreme metal fairly quickly so I missed a lot of classic heavy metal that I'm just catching up. Glad I did because I found some beauties but I'm still a newbie there's like 3 albums in this list I've been meaning to listen for ages now. Cheers dude!
Yeah I think it’s probably easily done nowadays. I’m enjoying going back through the ‘80s Heavy Metal stuff though. It’s both a blessing and a curse really. My pleasure, mate. Thanks so much for tuning in 🤘🏼
In no particular order.. Manilla Road - The Deluge Cirith Ungol - King of the Dead X-Wild - Monster Effect Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny Black Sabbath - Master of Reality Legend - From the Fjords Running Wild - Pile of Skulls Visigoth - The Revenant King Dio - Holy Diver Brocas Helm - Defender of the Crown
Hahaha, agreed. I’m having to bite my tongue every time I start a new vid now. Might sneak it in every now and then and see if TH-cam notices 🤣 Cheers for tuning in!
Awesome list. I’ve yet to check out Tygers of Pan Tang and Satan. I’m going to check them out. On the subject of Dickinson vs DiAnno, Bruce is obviously a phenomenal vocalist and his albums are by far my favourite, but the first 2 albums work best with Paul on vocals.
I like how Dickinson does Phantom of the Opera, but apart from that song I agree with you- prefer Di'anno's original vocals on any other Maiden songs from the first two albums.
@@jimmycampbell78 Phantom of the Opera is awesome with Bruce, same as Sign of the Cross from the X Factor, as it’s another grandiose theatrical song that fits in well with Bruce.
Appreciate that, mate! Strongly recommend those two bands. Phenomenal stuff, especially Satan! Dickinson’s vocals are undoubtedly impressive, I can’t deny that. I guess they’re just a bit too operatic and theatrical for my liking (I know I know, coming from a King Diamond fan). DiAnno gets my vote all day on the whole, but I see what you’re saying, perhaps his approach wouldn’t work later on.
@@Altars_of_Mattness No worries mate. You like what you like. It took me a while to get into Kiske’s vocals (from Helloween). Lots of people find King Diamond hard to get into. Keep up the good work. Love your content. 🤘
Again, as a Dane it warms my heart to see not one, but two Danish metal albums in your top 10.. 😍😍 .. although I would probably have chosen 'Melissa' and 'Conspiracy', but that is just nitpicking.. 🤗 That Black Sabbath debut is the single most important album of all time in my opinion; a timeless classic.. 💯 If I could suggest an album for you to consider, it would be 'Rainbow Rising' by Rainbow featuring Dio on vocals; maybe the only classic metal album to rival that Black Sabbath debut; yes, it's that good! 👌
I love Mercyful fate and king diamond but don’t break the oath with out a doubt is the best in my opinion. I also prefer painkiller over British steel . Good picks tho!
Some great Pick's here! I'm growing up in the 70/80's, so i would go with some Kiss Stuff. Love their old Album's. From the 80's I'm going with Halloween, Quiet Riot, Pretty Maids,Krokus,Queensryche...... So many great Music out there! I am switching over to Extreme Metal at 84 with all the great Shit from Metallica, Slayer,Kreator, Sodom,Destruction, Exodus..... Great Video as always!! 💀🤘💀🤘💀🤘
Great video Matt! I have to be honest, I haven't delved too deep into Traditional Heavy Metal. For me, I just can't get on with the high falsetto vocal style, which puts me off a lot of these types of bands. I just prefer a more mid range vocal style for this genre. The only one I know really well is Iron Maiden, I really love them! I've been looking for bands that sound similar. From what you showed I'd like to check out Tigers of Pan Tang, Black Sabbath, Venom and Angel Witch. All of which I've listened to very little or nothing by! Other bands I'd like to check out are Saxon and Armoured Saint, never really listened to them. I would include Ozzy Osbourne and his solo stuff here, I really dig the early Ozzy albums. And I think Motorhead would be fine to include, they're a big part of Heavy Metal being created. A band I'm starting to get into more now too! Great video man 😊🤘🏻🤘🏻
Hey mate! Pretty sure I’ve commented this type of message on one of your other videos but fuck it I’ll do it again Completely agree with you in regards to maidens debut. I think it’s the best maiden album ever and don’t get me wrong, I love Bruce too but the debut changed everything for me. Great video and great choices! All the nostalgia feels for me in this video. All classics, all brilliant!. I know hundreds of bands are underrated but Satan should have been much, much bigger. Not a duff album in their catalogue…
So happy to see young metal heads picking up on Satan, overlooked band. Two of of the band members went on to form a band called Skyclad in 1991 - and it was their debut "The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth" that got me into metal when I was 13.
I never got into Dio. Too much fantasy bollocks. Only Priest album I own. Rapid Fire rules. Not al fan though. First Sabbsth rules, The Wizard rules! King Diamond...ewwww. Same goes for Mercyful Fate. Never heard Tygers Of Pan Tang. Black Metal fucking rules- Teacher's Pet!! Maiden's debbut is a belter Angel Witch is classic. Not a bad list!
I really like ‘Holy Diver’, but I can’t vouch for much outside of that, because I simply haven’t explored it. Agreed, every track on Black Sabbath’s debut is incredible. We’ll have 0 King Diamond slander over here, sir… though that said, I slandered Bruce Dickinson, so that’s 1-1! Tygers seems like your cup of tea, man. Highly recommended!
