Being white when the show was on, my take was showing inequity at the time and family values was first and foremost. The father despite all obstacles, persevered and took care of his family. The mother was the glue of the family as in most families. Michael was intelligent and a fighter of right and wrong. Thelma was a descent, traditional women and JJ being very talented but a clown. But that was the comedy of it. I saw it as a teenager at the time, and think that all the characters portrayed were a microcosm of life. I took a positive opinion of the black community at the time as the majority of the characters were portrayed positively and good family values were projected. Hell, I have been married to my Black best friend and wife for over 34 years.

I met Ralph Carter on the train in NYC @25 yrs ago. He was real and approachable. He’s the truth about who he is and what he believes, which I got from our conversation. The bro is deep.
I remember when Ralph Carter visited my elementary school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn - PS138. I was in 4th or 5th grade at that time. He came through the cafeteria and all of the kids were yelling Michael's here. We were so excited. We ran up to him and then the teachers sat us back down. That's it. I don't remember anything else about that day, but being happy to meet someone we recognize from watching tv. That was about 40 years ago. 😁
Ralph and Bernadette, thank you for giving Esther Rolle her due props; I always knew she was a woman of high integrity and valor - which is notable, especially for a black woman to have power and influence in the entertainment industry at that time.

I would love to have Ralph as my friend ❤
Met him In Person, Extremely Smart, Great sense of Humor and Loves US For REAL!!!
Facts me 2
YES, he has a cool voice.
Mr. Carter just dropping jewels 💎 left and right!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Facts he needs a podcast and he should bring on guess and talk bout different topics.
I met Ralph Carter on the train in NYC @25 yrs ago. He was real and approachable. He’s the truth about who he is and what he believes, which I got from our conversation. The bro is deep.
This is legendary. I'm an 89 baby, but grew up on all of the older shows and STILL watch them REGULARLY. Raising my cub on the same 🤎
Jimmy is talking about everything but Good Times 😂
He's a weirdo.
That's all he does.
It was 50 years ago. Lol
The man is 76 give him a break
Omggg 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♀️! I was getting bored 😴
Ralph (Michael) is intelligent for real.... Vocabulary is extensive 🎯
BernNadette sneak pacing Jimmy's FOREVER story is the cutest thing ever.. 🤣🤣🤣
Damn! Damn!! Damn!!! Its been 5️⃣0️⃣ years!!!
Great show. James Evans, one of the greatest father figures in TV history.
My young daughter over 18 says dam dam dam!
Round of applause 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 For the legends in the room.
Around what year?

Oh Wow
I am sooo glad they're still friends
I am glad that they're still alive and healthy.
Ralph and Bernadette, thank you for giving Esther Rolle her due props; I always knew she was a woman of high integrity and valor - which is notable, especially for a black woman to have power and influence in the entertainment industry at that time.
Literally never call my son “boy” cause it’s a white racist word 💚 Michael was always my favorite character
Old school Chicagoans will tell you that Good Times is the greatest TV show of all time…
Michael is deep,as advertised…
Thelma still visits Chicago…She took,my number but said I was too young, she offered to hook me up with her daughter(whose also beautiful)…
When I was in Kindergarten(1977) I brought my JJ doll to “Show and Tell “…You pull the string, and it’s says “Dynomite”…I love how each of them, give homage to others while telling their stories….Damn, they don’t make’em like they used to.
I have see her daughter who is abt my age (sorta). Care to pass the daughter's digits over to me plz?
@@crittoneida958 lol My man!
They are 3 incredibly intelligent articulate and very healthy ppl. I love this
Thank you Breakfast Club for allowing the cast to share the truth! Much Appreciation
Ralph Carter is very well spoken. I love to hear him talk
Bernadette is standing the test of time and is still beautiful
I have to chuckle about jimmy walker. Every time he is asked anything about goodtimes his answer takes us directly into his life as a stand up comedian in the nightclubs. 😂
And.....he's not funny
It’s intentional. He gives zero f#%ks about the show that put him on the map. It’s disrespectful and disgusting.
@@hotgritz4shofacts. Like talk about the show. Don’t go off and try to be a comedian about it.
@@Emalye.Saeeeeeeeee I think he only showed up as a courtesy to Bernie & Ralph. But he’s always been aloof like this. He never recognized his antics on the show were setting our culture back either.
@@hotgritz4shonah that show didn’t put him on the map… as he mentioned, Pryor and Cosby, Jimmie has been around for a long time in comedy, Leno, Letterman, Carson is top notch stuff. He needed a wife and kids tho, I think he’s lonely
Haven't heard from Ralph Carter in years he is amazing
It's like our culture actually knew these three as close relatives growing up! There was actually a JJ doll they used to sell in Kmart in the 1970s, Thelma and Michael are iconic too! Kudos to "Good Times" for being such a great example for our upbringing, surviving, and living in disenfranchised circumstances but still possessing dignity and morality! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yep, I still have my J.J. doll too! Totally Classic:)
@@mitchsalawine5420 😊
My wife and I were able to see them all last week on the Tom Joyner Cruise, it was great. We got to talk and hang out with Ralph a few times… great experience! Thanks & respect to him and to all those who make us shine.
🤍💙🤍💙Good Times is a show that makes you feel blackity-black black. Ain’t nothin like Thelma’s oatmeal, JJ’s dyno-mite, and Michael-the militant midget! Not to mention the side characters: “Lootin’ Lenny” “Weepin’ Wanda,” “Ned the Wino”, “Bookman “Booga”, and Monte’ the hustla! This show gives you a glimpse of the ghetto. Shoutout to Chicago. The birthplace of Cooley High. Cabrini Green is torn down now, but, every time Good Times airs, the memories of nostalgia are always good. Salute to these infamous three!🤍💙🤍💙
You wannabe Ralph Carter so bad 😂😂 I’m joking because Ralph was naming
💯👁👁ABSOLUTELY👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
John Amos the strong father Esther Rolle the amazing mother when James left the struggle was real
@@williesmith9638 YES, INDEED!!!! I REMEMBER I WATCHED THE SHOW AS A KID, ON A REGULAR BASIS. I FIND MYSELF WATCHING STILL TO THIS DAY ( (5) FIVE DAYS A WEEK. CERTAIN EPISODES ARE SO MUCH MEANING FULL TO ME. ESPECIALY WHEN LOUIS GOSSET JR. WAS ON.
@@LaMarraPSmithLouis Gossett was that unk that they needed to replace Jon Amos character
Bernadette is only one who stayed on topic with the questions asked 😂 lol love Ralph carters knowledge
Bernadette and Ralph Carter would be good interview for club Shay Shay. JW does not seem interested in talking about good times just his comedy.
@@junedehartgaines7130-
Because Good Times is really a blip on the map of his career. His career has been always standup.
how powerful is it that even back then, a black woman could have creative say over a show in the 70's? esther rolle was absolutely important and I'm glad they spoke ab how she advocated for them.
👏👏👏 Thank You, Miss Esther Rolle, Who ALWAYS Stood on Business.
It was created for her as a spinoff from the show " "Maude" .
I like their overall vibe. It feels like they’ve been hanging out with each other all along.
Man, Ralph and Bernadette were so humble and grateful and get my utmost gratitude and respect! They are true icons and treasures to Black American culture! I love Walker, but he seems to be trying to go out of his way to act like his iconic role was not one of, if not the most, defining thing of his career. It is a bit off putting, but he is still an icon.
Agreed
It warms my heart to see how they are really a family! Supporting each other, tolerating each other, just loving each other unconditionally!!
agreed. but i think what we see and his experience .. is different. i gathered that to him, good times was just a job and his true passion was his art as a comedian. and there are untold stories there that he would rather amplify. and i understand that too
I met Mrs. Bernadette aka Thelma at her book signing. She was so sweet, humble, and took pictuees with us.She is also GORGEOUS and smelled amazing.. Love her!!
Dang, Mr Carter is so eloquent! Love it. THEY do Black folk proud🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️

Somebody clearly didn't watch that Dave Chappelle skit 😂
This song is so true today. When you are able to makes your payments every month is a blessing. Good times to me come from being able to take care of family, myself, and still celebrating life.
I am so proud of all three of them. I'm glad Jimmie, Bernadette, and Ralph turned out to be well rounded individuals beyond Good Times.
The Breakfast Club is very blessed to have these 3 legends on the show.

What a blessing , to watch this interview, they all look great. JJ pls allow Bernertte and Mr Carter to talk.😂
Good Times kept it real. The show depicted integral parts of the black experience. Thank you for having them on the show. This show was for the culture for real
Good Times was before my time. I was born in 83 but I always watch the reruns on TV growing up and I became a fan of the show every since.
Me too! I was born in the 90s
Ima 83 baby too
💯
Same, I was born in 1989
I met Michael at a party a couple of months ago he was given a speech and he was nice enough to take a picture with me and my friend. Nice guy
Aww,How Wonderful ❤❤❤❤
It's great seeing these iconic personalities, looking good and expressing themselves. "Good Times", is, was and will be one of the greatest shows to ever be on television.
Being a child of the 70's Good Times was a staple for black/brown folks to see people that look like us on TV was inspirational Thelma was like the TV crush for a LOT of teen boys

I recall seeing Ralph Carter walking down the hall at Hunter College. His face was so familiar to me that I immediately said, “hi”, and he said, “hi!” Then it hit me who he was!
I also recalled that he took classes with renown historian Dr. Henrik Clarke while at Hunter College.
I have NEVER clicked so hard on a Breakfast Club video in my LIFE Lol
I know, right.
Lol same!! 😂😂
Exactly lol
I remember when Doja Cat showed her Boob so hard like it was yesterday 🤓

I’d take it down still
I'm amazed
RIGHT!!
No surprise but sister is still fine to the present my my
I like the conciousness development of ralph carter....and it's still with him
Wonderful interview. This was my show. I came home from school fast so that I didn’t miss the reruns 😊. It is very telling that Jimmy didn’t have any real Good Times stories. His only focus then and now is his comedy career. I’m here for Good Times. Not his comedy stories. Bernadette and Ralph are so thoughtful, introspective, and considerate
“I am to be taken seriously because life is serious”
-Ralph.
Man this is what old school professionalism was about. Stop making blackness a joke.

You're right black don't crack, blacker the Berry sweeter the juice, if it don't fit don't force it.
Wow! Ralph is a real gem they all are❤
Esther Rolle was a jewel. Although i didn't always like her character, I love what she gave the "Good Times" table.
Yes she was. She fought hard for her fellow cast members and the integrity of the show.
I didn’t like her holier than thou always want James to be broke character either. Now that I’m watching this interview I see she had a voice in Hollywood and she USED IT TO HELP OTHER BLACK CAST MEMBERS. Now I respect her ! ❤
Me and my sis were young and so we thought the mom just wanted them to stay poor.
Charlemagne: so what was it like working with Janet Jackson?
Jimmie walker: sometimes I like to make cereal on the 4th of July because I do stand-up.
Ralph: the Egyptians made the Pyramids in honor of black culture.
Bernadette: she was a very nice young lady.
