    I think Bernadette Stanis didn’t want to get into all that, about the problems between Esther Rolle, John Amos with Jimmy Walker. It was said that John Amos and Esther Rolle didn’t talk with Jimmy Walker. Jimmie Walker also didn’t attend Esther Rolle’s funeral. He felt that there wasn’t anything wrong with his character’s silliness because it brought in ratings and also made him a household name and they were threatened by his fame, but Esther Rolle and John Amos felt that he should have stood his ground with them that his character would have a better image to show before the world, instead of what they considered buffoonery. In reality they really did well in covering it up, because I always thought they all got along as working actors, but later learned that, that wasn’t true at all. I Love this show (Good Times) it will always be my favorite childhood memory.

      Old school ways
      Old school was taught whatever happened inside the house, with the family stayed inside the house.
      You where not to tell family drama or business, to the outside the world.
      Same thing with the cast.
      Whatever happens with the cast/family stays within the family.
      Bernadette is trying to be respectful too.
      People didn't know for a long time ,why John or Esther left the show.
      I had heard Esther got sick and that's why she left for that one year.
      Good Times covered stuff up like they did on the Golden Girls
      Bea Arthur didn't like Betty White.
      Bea thought Betty was fake because she always was so happy and positive.
      That was just her personality
      No one knew that they didn't get along. They definitely were good actors.
      People found out after Bea, Estelle Rue had passed away.
      They also kept it a secret that Estelle Getty had dementia.
      They had to put her lines on index cards. They did a good job of covering up stuff back then

      No offense to the cast, but i dont think it would’ve never been the hit it became if not for “JJ” being the breakthrough character. He brought the laughs. Had it not been for him it just would’ve been a depressing show bout a poor black family.

    • @ExposedRoot
      @ExposedRoot 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I agree. Like you said no offense but everybody else was pretty much a supporting character around Jimmie Walker. I grew up in the '70s and if you had a Good Times lunch box it had Jimmy Walker's face on it and said Dy-no-mite!! It's obvious she didn't want to get into any of the gossip or behind the scenes nonsense but without Jimmy Walker that show would have had a season or two.

      John Amos and Esther Rolles were seasoned trained actors and learned the art of acting at some of the most prestigious institutions in America. They were Civil Rights activists, and understood how the industry worked for Black Americans. Jimmie Walker was a 26 year old struggling comic. I understand how all three felt regarding their interpretation of success. John and Esther wanted roles they could take pride in and depicted Black Americans in a positive way. Jimmy Walker was a struggling comic that just wanted to be famous and a steady paycheck. 2 things can be true at the same time.

  • @kevinharris3993
    @kevinharris3993 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

    I don't think Esther or John Amos had issues with Jimmy Walker. The issue was they didn't want a show that was humorous by degrading Black American and feeding white people's negative stereotype of Black Americans. That is why Ester insisted that she has a husband on the show. Because of Jimmy Walker's youth, I don't think he cared how he was portrayed. Jimmy Walker embraced fame, fortune, and opportunity. The industry still has the same playbook when they elevate Black Americans in the entertainment industry. They are more subtle, but the rule book hasn't changed. Bernadette was young during those days. So, I don't think she was evading the question. That was her experience as a teenager. We forget "Good Times" premiered almost 50 years ago.

      You are wrong. JJ literally didn't speak to hardly anyone on the show. The common denominator is his behavior, not Ester. JJ even said himself he distanced himself from everyone.
      Also, James Amos literally said that he didn't dislike JJ. He even said sometimes he would past break character at his jokes. He and Ester didn't like the fact that JJ character was lowered to no sense, no job, and a complete failure at everything and always cutting up. Plus, the writers used that to distract from the serious subject matter they would address on the show. Eventually they did come to resent his character cause JK Tthe actor didn't take his craft serious. Ester and James came from a background of serious acting and discipline. ANY actor would've done the same with JJ.

    I have no love for jimmy, but to be fair, it sounds like he KNEW IT WASN'T HER CROWD and that's a JUSTIFIABLE REASON WHY he wouldn't take her with him. Sounds like he was lowkey protecting her (AND HIMSELF) BY *NOT* having her around him and his krew. It appears that she was really green from the beginning & had a different impression of what "going out on the town" was like for a dude who was running the streets with his homies, "partying" (aka FREAKOFF shyt) -- especially in an era where dudes were free & even enabled to be preddatory (not necessarily *always* sekksually -- but still). Sounds like EVERYONE KNEW she was green (although she was positioned as the sekksSymbol)..... Ultimately, she was easily malleable (naive, if you will) for the producers/directors and all the veterans know they can't disrupt that for the "powers that be" .
    It was a time when those in managing positions will put the word out not to "mess with their money", and Bern was VERY FORTUNATE to be on a set where the kids were not blatantly sekksually grewmd/assolltid (because a successful blaq sitcom was fairly new and they were still working out HOW to groom blaq children in longevity).
    EVEN STILL, she is unable to participate EVEN IN INTERVIEWS with the conflict that yall/media tries to pull out of her (not necessarily a bad thing). Kollonized religion ALSO plays an important role in keeping them where they need her to be, and in fact she STILLL has an innocence about what REALLY goes on, and this is often demonstrated by the lowkey reverence she continues to hold for normanLear and his accomplices -- because BLAQppl are such a compassionate Culture and that often bites Us in the azz on some rinse&repeat type shyt when trusting lucyfurr's demons, as is demonstrated IN REALTIME AS WE ENDURE THE CURRENT JEANOSYDES AGAINST US.
    With THAT SAID, ALL HONORS to ERIC MONTE -- who ALSO became a victim of his trusted perceived allLIES.

    Being white when the show was on, my take was showing inequity at the time and family values was first and foremost.
    The father despite all obstacles, persevered and took care of his family. The mother was the glue of the family as most families are. Michael was intelligent and a fighter of right and wrong. Thelma was a descent, traditional women and JJ being very talented but a clown. But that was the comedy of it.
    I saw it as a teenager at the time, and think that all the characters portrayed were a microcosm of life. I took a positive opinion of the black community at the time as the majority of the characters were portrayed positively and good family values were projected. Hell, I have been married to my Black best friend and wife for over 34 years.
