I agree. I've seen a bit similar setup with IKEA float shelves where they made all the parts that get screwed into the wall out of metal. Making those parts out of wood, too, seems like a nice solution.
Just in time. I finished doing 7 hexagons for my 2 Maine Coon kittens. I have the wood for floating shelves but was tentative. Now I've got your fabulous video. Thank you so much for a job well done!!!
So, I have been in my house for just over 4 years. I have a 4ft wall above my computer desk that is just open. I had a more geometric (with mostly 90 degree angles) version of this at my last house, but painted it black. It collected dust and the items on it were random collectables, so my wife hated it. This has given me the perfect inspiration for a different look. I may use dowels and build and attach. Thanks for the idea and different wall attachment than keyholes.
Truth is , April, you don not do ANYTHING small! However, you do EVERYTHING with size AND QUALITY... Thanks for taking us on your amazing journey. (LONG time viewer)
Of course I'd find the inspiration I couldn't find anywhere from April when it comes to a different style floating shelf idea for my office. Thanks for being awesome!
I have been using the Wagner Power Paint roller for over a decade now. Love it very much. Just make sure to apply Vaseline to all the seals. Nice shelving unit.
You are fearlessly creative, April. Kate and I will eventually watch all of these videos and we appreciate all your common sense tips. God bless you, April!
I like your trick of cutting the dowels on the bandsaw to aid with the installation of the shelves. I also like your floating shelf design that does not require the purchase of special hardware. The only improvement I can think of is cutting a chamfer or slot down the joint line of the two halves of the shelf. This will create a shadow line that may help hide the joint if there is a slight gap. This slot may also help in displaying plates on the shelf. Overall an AWESOME Project!!! Your "Shelf Wall" looks GREAT April!!! 😀👏
Clever method. I think it would help to drill the hole as high as possible above the midpoint of the board's edge. That way the shelf "hangs" from the dowel and it will have less sag.
This was an awesome project, April. I love watching your creativity/imagination run wild! I always impressed with how you handle involved builds like this. I was hoping to see your cat explore the shelves before you adding the decorations. Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Looks wonderful. Wondering if the problem at the miters could have been solved by replacing the dominos with a rectangular biscuit and dados on the ends of both shelf pieces. That way they could slide on in the same direction as the dowels.
I liked this video as much as the one of the deck. I heard you say your cat would like this. I think you are right. Maybe make her one on a smaller wall that will challenge her to make it to the top. Have good days!
Nice project April! This definitely took some planning! But, if anyone can do it, then you can. I really like the pattern and, you’re right, your cat will find a place soon to sneak a nap! Lol…. Thanks for sharing this one, a beautiful build!
That's a great focal point for the room, and a great use of that wall space, plus being very visually interesting with the angles, and the color contrasts with the lighter wood. Well done! And I like the alternative assembly you described at the end over the solid wood approach (mainly because I'm too much of a cheapskate with current lumber prices to hang all that hardwood). 😎
I might use the floating shelf idea for the wall behind my desk. Kind of open and would be nice to have something up there. I used one of those painter things from Wagner about 20 years ago to paint the first house I ever bought. Thought it was kind of a unnecessary gadget when I bought it. The house was super ugly with blue and pink trim, as well as gray and pink wall paper. Ditched the wall paper. Took a weeks "Vacation" and I will say that roller made the whole painting of that house it way easier. Ceilings and walls. After using it I was pretty sold. Defiantly worth the cash for someone that really hates painting. Later I ended up removing the Fake beams and popcorn texture on the ceiling. Installed new floors. Updated the whole house eventually stripping both bathrooms to the studs to rebuild. Painted the outside... replaced the garage doors. Tucked and pointed the bricks in a few spots. I did very well at sell time. Did everything myself with the help of my wife. That house gave me a ton of confidence (never had done anything like that before) and I feel I can handle most things these days.
This whole thing is great. I used to use a similar paint roller but it hooked up to my airless sprayer. I like your torsion box idea for the next idea. Maple plywood has been my go to for floating shelves. I would do full miter folds for a seamless finish. I like your two piece design, I would suggest that you back cut the box 5-10 degrees where it meets your mounting strips, that will give you room and ease to scribe for a seamless finish. I’m so doing this for my next shelving job.
April, I love your videos, I've been watching for years ever since your home improvements to your last house. That being said, I believe that you look like you could use some time off and a break. We would all understand if you took time for yourself.
Like this idea. I have a large wall and was thinking the same thing: how do I make it interesting while filling the wall with Nick nacks and pics? This idea fills the bill! And perfect timing!
Good morning, April. Once again you've shown us a really cool idea, come to fruition. One question. What are the odds, you'll walk into the room to find your cat on the shelves and your items on the floor or couch? hahaha! 🐱Cats! Thanks for Floating this shelving by us!😉 Have a GREAT week!

The "Good-to-Great Ms. Wilkerson" continues to amaze with innovation and creativity. Always look forward to your next video...keep them coming.
Happy Spring April!
This is the best method I've seen for mounting floating shelves!
Love the method of fastening floating shelves to the wall.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing and for watching.
I like how you put all those items on the cat's new climbing tree. They should have a good time knocking them off as they enjoy their climb.
Holy cow! Perfect timing, my wife and I need one of these for our wall. Only a straight piece...nothing fancy like yours. Perfect design

So many tools I want lol and such a large workshop.
Truth is , April, you don not do ANYTHING small! However, you do EVERYTHING with size AND QUALITY... Thanks for taking us on your amazing journey. (LONG time viewer)
Love it! Def needs LED accent lighting. 😁👍
I had the question In my head about how to make a floating shelf then boom you provided the answer! Perfect timing
April, Very cool idea, Thanks.
Cat knocking the stuff off the shelves in 3,2,1...😸😸😸😸
Throw together a quick jig and use the drill press to make a straight drilling guide for straight, repeatable holes.
beautiful
No a fan of the overall design, but I love learning things from April. She’s super clever, and makes everything sensible. Awesome job!!
Nice work
What perfect timing for this video to be posted. I was just curious about how i was going to make my shelves
🤗 GREAT JOB …But not sure how many people have such a good shop 🤗😍😍😍
Nice work..And great tools..
Amazing job April looks stunning
Of course I'd find the inspiration I couldn't find anywhere from April when it comes to a different style floating shelf idea for my office. Thanks for being awesome!
Great! Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
I like that paint brush tray cleaner, good job April!!!
I have been using the Wagner Power Paint roller for over a decade now. Love it very much. Just make sure to apply Vaseline to all the seals. Nice shelving unit.
It was amazing! Thanks for the tip and for watching.
The cats are going to love this... we said it at the same time! Sweet shelves.
Looks Awesome! Really like the lines and the "randomness" (for lack of a better word) of the angles.
Thanks! Yes, I love that too! Thanks for watching.
You are fearlessly creative, April. Kate and I will eventually watch all of these videos and we appreciate all your common sense tips. God bless you, April!
Thank you so much!
Those are FABULOUS!
Nice idea! Cats would love some of shelves. AND price tags on plant and lamp. HA!
Another great project . well done

Very very cool.
That's beautiful April! I think I'll make a "Relax" cut out of wood just like yours.
Wow, this is a awesome design.
Looks a bit like a pcb.
I'll keep this one in my mind.
Clever method. I think it would help to drill the hole as high as possible above the midpoint of the board's edge. That way the shelf "hangs" from the dowel and it will have less sag.
Okay now you've done it. You said you were a neat painter. Please help those of us (me) who are sloppy painters with brush and regular roller tips!
April, this was an a-MAZE-ing project .... Ok I'm done.... Great job and loving that new wall look
This is the best floating shelf method i've seen yet! So how to do you attach the dowels to the backing piece? Glue them into holes drilled into it?
Turned out nice. And pick up a dowling jig which will make drilling those holes easy and perfectly straight
That looks really good. I dont think ive seen someone do it like that.
Amazing job 👍
That is a brilliant way to mount shelves!
Very clean and stylish
April ,,the Best,,, saludos desde Chile,🇨🇱,,!!!!
Your videos are #1...you are such an amazing craftswoman! Looks freaking cool as hell.👍
Your right the dark wall makes it pop. And as always amazing work. Thanks heaps for sharing
Great idea using the dowels for hanging the shelves! Love the light maple color too. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! You never cease to amaze! Not only the artistic vision but the technical implementation. You are a genius!
what a great project. thanks for showing and explaining it..
OMG that ink on the inside of your right forearm/wrist is dope……I need/want to see some images of that!
You're amazing April. Thank you!
Very nice job April. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
I love it April. Love and God Bless XOXO
Very nice looks great! Thanks 🙂🙏
I love the design, April. It really fills the space very nicely.
Thanks for sharing. Felix

Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Congratulations on the junk collector 2000,kinda neat if you need a busy room, and hoard stuff.
I was waiting for a closing shot with a cat lying on the shelves :)
Me too... but all it takes is one trip up and it will own it. Then it's impossible to keep it off.
Yes, your cat probably is gonna love that - probably too much.
Hi April we love your videos. How is your guitar playing going?
Really cool and modern desing!!!! Congrats!!!
My cats would love this
You know April. Wish I’d known you’d do this one now. Just installed mine 2 weeks ago and these video gave me better ideas.
So nice
Looks wonderful. Wondering if the problem at the miters could have been solved by replacing the dominos with a rectangular biscuit and dados on the ends of both shelf pieces. That way they could slide on in the same direction as the dowels.
That was my thought also.
I liked this video as much as the one of the deck. I heard you say your cat would like this. I think you are right. Maybe make her one on a smaller wall that will challenge her to make it to the top. Have good days!
Hallo nach Texas USA zu April wilkerson aus Düsseldorf Germany und tschüß 🥳🥳😄😄

Looks good. Makes me think of a circuit board. But 30 years as IT guy can do that.
Oh my I will be doing this build. Not as big but, love , love this build!!!!! I’m sure your cat will to!!!!!
How did you attach the dowels to the backing boards? That joint seems like the weak link in how much weight this style of attaching can hold.
That came out great…. Wonderful idea
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching.

Very nice. The lines remind me of a schematic drawing of something electronic.
awesome video @DIYCreators did this a couple years ago too. Love your vids, April!
Awesome! Thank you!
Looks awesome! Nice job April!!
Awesome job! And thanks for being a great inspiration
great video, love how you made the floating wall so easy to construct and install.
Glad you liked it!

The wall turned out amazing! It looks so functional and stylish. Nice work with your Wagner tools!
Another great video April! My sister has been wanting me to make here some of these for a while now, now it looks like I have a game plan! 😉😎
Great results. How does it feel in practice? Have you hit the back of your head to shelves while using the sofa?
Not at all. It works great for me. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing with us April. That looks good and the cat loves it, how many wipe out has it done? Thanks again, stay safe. Fred.
Love your channel, ideas & effort you put into your work!

Did you glue the dowels into the ledger board?
Extraordinary
