    This is a story about me winning a "FREE" iPad. As you can see, it's not quite that simple. Be careful with Deal Delivery Gurus or anyone else who randomly tells you that you've won a free iPad.
    I used Privacy.com to set up the virtual card.

    Dude I work for a credit card company and talk about fraud all day. I could tell you some stories. We call these call centers all the time. They never say what company they work for. It's always "press 9 to speak to customer service" and then they answer and just say "thank you for calling customer support". They are so secretive.

      Honestly, I’d love to hear all your stories. I kind of fell down a rabbit hole of researching all the different scams out there. I’m on the Scams subreddit almost every day, and watch most of the scambaiting channels. Yesterday, I listened to romance scam victims tell their stories and also reported a ton of scammers in the comments of his videos. You could say I’m a little obsessed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @MrLTiger
      @MrLTiger ปีที่แล้ว +63

      they do this for 2 reasons, 1. they probably dont even know the real name of the company they work for and 2. they probably run multiple scams.
      they might not even be aware of what the scam is in this case since it's all automatic billing, unlike the tech support scams we often see. those customer support lines are basically just a front to shield the real operators from complaints

    Some things that should have been pointed out:
    If you’re told that you won something, but you’re told you need to pay them, whether it’s for taxes or shipping… it’s a scam! No legitimate sweepstake will require you to pay anything to claim your winnings because they’re not allowed to. Yes, there are taxes - but you will pay those to the IRS during tax season.
    For-Profit companies (like GroupMe) are not allowed to run raffles, too. Even if they told you in the first place that you’re paying for an entry, they’d still be breaking the law.
    These are things that need to be pointed out so that those who don’t know can learn about these massive red flags.

    • @AutumnRivers
      @AutumnRivers ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, that's why every sweepstakes you'll see always says No Purchase Necessary. Because if you have to pay for it, then it's no longer a sweepstakes. It's gambling.

    Like you said, the layout was very clever, and intentionally made to deceive you into recurring payments.
    The difference was I was charged $20, and then $70. I was never able to get through to a customer service number, either.
    And when I recorded the scam through my credit card company, they only refunded me the $20, so I still lost $70.

    I have actually seen people selling ClearPods before but in real life shops. They mostly are sold by street vendors lining the streets of Hong Kong and Shenzhen. If I am not mistaken they are most likely made in Shenzhen. They are not meant to be a scam when made but its meant to make a cheap lookalike to the Airpods, which I guess is kinda like a scam but yea. Its usually sold for around anywhere from USD$4-20.

    This same skam works it’s way through various different channels and there are hundreds of different websites involved. If you don’t cut it off it also becomes a monthly recurring charge on your credit card and each time that they charge your card they will change their company name on your bill in hopes of the recurring charges going unnoticed. The call centers in the Philippines are also complicit in the skamm.

    I like how you said you went easy on the call centre workers.
    While some telephone operators are absolutely complicit in the scam, not all are.
    When I was in my late teens, I got a job in a call centre. I was told that the company's business was buying unwanted timeshares and selling them at a profit. I was admittedly young and naive but I believed them. The whole thing was presented to me as a legitimate, perfectly innocent business.
    My job as an opener was simple. They had files with the details and phone numbers of prospective sellers. I was to call them up, ask if they still wanted to sell, explain how it worked and confirm their details. Later, a closer would get in touch with them and take it from there.
    One of my first calls was to a gentleman who started off as pretty abusive, hurling insults and yelling that he was sick of me, personally.
    I went off script and explained that I hadn't spoken to him before because it was my first day.
    I don't think he believed me but he calmed down enough to warn me that I was working for a scam company. He also told me that they had been harrassing him with constant phone calls and he never had any intention of selling his timeshare in the first place.
    I wasn't sure what to think. I didn't know who was right, the company or him so I just wrote a note on his file that he wasn't interested and told him that I would bear his warning in mind.
    His warning had made me suspicious, though and these suspicions were heightened when everyone I called that day either didn't pick up or had a similar reaction. Nobody stayed on the phone for very long or went along with the script.
    The next day, I was handed a "new" stack of papers with people to phone. Most were ones I hadn't seen before but one was the same gentleman from the previous day, complete with my own handwritten note that he was not to be contacted.
    I was confused as to why it had shown up again so I took my pen and scribbled heavily over his phone number, rendering it illegible.
    I also started thinking more about how this business worked as they required people to provide their card details and fly over to attend a meeting prior to the sale. At first, I had just assumed that this was normal but now, I was seriously questioning it.
    I started hanging up before people could answer and repeatedly calling numbers which I knew would just ring out with no answer. I wanted to look busy so I wouldn't be fired if the company was legitimate but not actually get any work done in case it was a scam.
    Later, I overheard a couple of closers laughing about having convinced a woman to provide them with her husband's card details without his permission, while he was at work.
    I also heard that when people flew over for meetings to sell their timeshares, there was some sort of sales pitch which they would be subjected to (I don't know any details, that was all I heard).
    There were other little inconsistencies or things which bugged me too like how the job was cash-in-hand and some of the papers on prospective sellers had the name of a different company on them.
    Combining everything, I became convinced that the gentleman from before was correct and it was a scam. That was when I stopped showing up at the call centre and went looking for a different job instead.
    I wasn't there for very long and never got a single penny as it was entirely commission based. I'm just thankful that I didn't actually scam anyone while I was there, mainly because of that gentleman and his warning. I never want to do something so horrible to innocent people.

    • @GeeEee75
      @GeeEee75 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why would you hang around working on commission-only basis after you decided you weren't going to try to make any sales? Why turn up for work when you weren't being paid?

    • @xandervampire195
      @xandervampire195 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GeeEee75 I think the first thing I need to do is give you some more context.
      Specifically, the fact that this entire experience took place over the course of approximately one week, give or take a couple of days. Honestly, I should have said this in my original comment so that's my bad.
      As for why I stayed that long, here are the reasons:
      1. I'm Scottish but I was living in Spain at the time (I lived there for four years in my late teens/early twenties). Have you ever tried to find work with practically no qualifications, in a country where you aren't fluent in the language? It's a nightmare. I was hoping that my suspicions would be proven wrong and everything would work out.
      2. I was getting on well with a flirty, attractive girl who worked there. I actually took her on a date, using my savings. However, as you might expect, I never contacted her again after I left.
      3. Like all teenagers, I was guilty of making stupid mistakes. I initially thought it would be better to hold onto that job at least until I found a new one. Otherwise, I'd have my family pressuring me to find one and stressing me out. I didn't tell my family about my suspicions, either.

    Not sure how it works in the U.S. but that wouldn't work for them here in Ireland. Every single charge to your card presented from a website has to be approved in your banking app with your trusted phone via your Pin code for 2FA purposes. So for example I could authorise the first one, the charge is presented and I give it the thumbs up. If they tried again it wouldn't work as I would have to authorise it.
