Are used to go to rainbow gatherings or through my 20s and 30s. But we made sure that we left no trace we were there. We cleaned the environment and left gifts for the locals. It has changed a lot.

The last one that I went to was in West Virginia in 05'.
It just didn't have the same "Welcome Home feel" anymore.
In years past, I had been on many of the council circles, and I know for a fact, that within a year of the gathering, ALL traces were COMPLETELY disappeared. You couldn't tell at all that 30,000 people had been living there!

@@morningdewreynolds5476 So if you REALLY love Mother Nature you wouldn't leave a trace that lasts even one day, let alone a whole year. Nothing good about thousands of people in the forest. Even a few people can have an impact they don't understand, such as spreading human disease to animals.

I had the privilege to meet a few people from the rainbow family in flagstaff, arizona when I was 14 years old(28 years ago). They were so generous and kind. We were homeless at the time. They had a 3 legged dog and lived in the forest in a skoolie. I’ll never forget it. Thanks for sharing this.

I lived (short term) with a Rainbow Family in Oregon years ago and it was an awful experience. Rape was abundant (consent in general, was just not taught or upheld - not just with sex, but other things as well). A few people stole another person's dog, killed it and ate it (and this was not an isolated event - I heard about this A LOT, regarding other people's pets, mostly dogs). There were some good qualities, sure - but the bad MAJORLY outweighed the good. A lot of them are also REALLY bad at littering, not digging deep enough holes to shit in, etc. Just an awful mess, all around. They don't really care for the earth. They just trash it. Most of them are pretentious, white kids running away from their lives.

I am sorry that you experienced such horror. While no one is really authorized to speak for the Rainbow Family, I still want to apologize on their behalf and on behalf of humanity in general. Unfortunately, just like there are con men out there using the Bible to rip off good Christians, and terrorists twisting the words of Islam to justify their evil deeds, so too there are awful people out there claiming to be a part of the Rainbow Family to earn others trust and then abuse it. I’d love to personally take you to a proper gathering and have you experience tremendous spiritual joy. But as a sufferer of PTSD myself, I can also understand if you’d be reluctant to do so.
I truly hope you have not been permanently scarred by this horrible experience with these evil imposters. Remember: that which doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger. Hopefully you have a new found strength going forward. Best of luck to you.

I had a friend who got involved with the Rainbow Gathering/Family group. He invited me to check it out as he tried to sell me on it. This was in California. We drove to the location and people just came off as dirty and just interested in drugs. I remember the bad smell coming off people from not bathing or using deodorant. I remember our car getting broken into and some of our stuff was stolen. And, that was all in the first day we were there. I remember just leaving after the car was broken into. Johnny Rotten was right when he said "Never trust a hippy".

Ok, Can I just add I went to a local rainbow gathering last year in Oregon.. it was my first and last time I'd ever go to one.
I love nature...I love eco-friendly living.... I went.. and was kinda interested to get away from it all. So I drove from Florida
to Oregon because I had done tons of research and felt, it's climate... it's art scene, nature.. were possibly for me. But,
the Rainbow gathering after a friend of mine talked me into going to... little did I know that the mosquitoes in the woods
are waaaay worse than the one's in Florida...little did I know that some hippies are not all sunshine and rainbows..
It was very unorganized... lazy and parent's yelling at their children. I love the idea of living in nature in seclusion,
but the many flaws of this type of gathering... is lack or common sense. It was mostly a place for people to get high,
and after my first day there I left.. Now before you decide to criticize me, know I have been to other gatherings...with
nature loving, music loving people..such as paralounge in Ocala, FL.. which was one of my favorites to go to.
I'll just say that even hippies can leave tons of waste behind.. not all hippy gatherings are clean.. they leave tons
of excrement and the park rangers have to clean up after them. So please, if you do decide to go to a Rainbow
gathering.. at least CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF.. with that said. peace out.

The underground music festivals on the east coast are the best place to find like minded folks. I know all about the wrong type of fake hippies you mean, some are even very dark in mentality, even dangerous if high and that is totally opposite of the point of that, its like the last place they go is camp to camp sponging everything, and abusing the communal codes. Being a musician in several touring bands throughout the years and playing all types and sizes of festies, i can say you don't need to travel too far to meet real down earthy peeps that do this, and then you can ask where there are local areas that like minded congregate, although there are more permanent and private communes out north west, and in Arizona around Sierra Vista (love that place) but there are also a big scene in the mountains in the Appalachians from smokies to certain counties in VA. Like around the Floyd fest area, it was started by nearby commune members at the inception years ago, the whole area is very yuppie now as ppl has moved there for the experience, with new age hippies and the Original 60s ones side by side walking around the town in tie dyes, its pretty cool to see. Anywhere there is eco businesses everywhere, usually is a sign that there is like minded individuals, i run a solar panel shingle installation company and they're compatible with tesla batteries, there is a lot of similar businesses in these communities and i hope this catches on soon so everyone is off of grid and coal is gone, oil is gone and our planet has a chance to heal its self finally from our abuse from greedy. I've digressed but you've got the point, head into the mountains and ye shall find what ye seeks.

My bf works for the National forest service... he is an off-the-grid hippie himself. He doesn’t say anything negative about anyone - except the rainbow family. They’ve left so much trash and litter in EVERY forest he’s worked in across the US. They’ve broke the law on numerous occasions, staying longer than is permitted by federal law.
So this sounds like all fun & rainbows - but it looks like a set up like this in the video is meant for longer than 2 weeks ... which is against the law... and makes it harder for our foresters to take care of the forest bc they’re busy cleaning up trash instead of cleaning up brush to mitigate forest fires.
Edit- I see some ppl commenting “who cares about traces from campsites? Cities create so much waste” - my response is this: DO YOUR RESEARCH. The forest service land has been preserved in order to allow everyone to use the land perpetually. It contains some of the last remaining wilderness in the country. It’s been protected so that we -and future generations - can always have a piece of nature to escape from the cities, civilization, and messy culture. It’s not a matter of having a lil litter here and a lil litter there. It’s supposed to be a pristine piece of land as OPPOSED to the cities. In SPITE of the cities. So yea a little bit of litter from this campsite is a bigger deal in the National Forest than in NYC
I’m ALL FOR the rainbow family if they had their commune on private land.

I think your insight is super important and I hope a lot of people read your comment. I want to add that I think we should be mindful of how much threat these protected lands will come under as the conditions of our cities continue to deteriorate. I personally worry that it would be unrealistic to expect that preservation for perpetual future use should be the guiding star for upcoming generations that must face the consequences of their predecessors’ environmental destruction. And accordingly, falling back on the federally protected vs private land distinction doesn’t necessarily work when the rainbows and many others are trying these experimental living arrangements as part of an overall rejection of the systems of political power as well as land stewardship that organize a mainstream American lifestyle and housing

You own the land? Who owns the land? It was stolen thru rape pillage and murder. Now the government creates laws around what they stole from other people...but some how the hippies all the sudden need to follow the rules and be honest, moral and thoughtful.
Perhaps your right maybe they should be cleaner. But the government has created a society that has poisoned and polluted the air and seas and the river and buried trash under thousands of acres of land...Are they polluting properly somehow? look at the society you are defending.so many holes in your logic. You support an imperialistic society that controls people with guns and charges people to live. You do know society's laws are enforced by violence guns and bloodshed.HaHa and you pick out one little thing like trash in a forest and demonize them...Maybe they should all go back to to the 9-5 job and be controlled by your utopian mindeset.
Your society was created thru enforcement, violence, death, and money...you go ahead and support it if you want but this is the only way people can be free in a very minor way...now go back to your job, your probably late for work and might get written up or fired, then you wont be able to pay your rent....embecile.

Hello, I can't disagree with what you said,
They pretend to love nature and all but I didn't see any eco friendly thing done there,
I often go to psychedelic/hippie festivals in Europe, and hippies there don't trash anything,
campsite looks good, lots of beautiful decoration that everyone brings, no trash around, everyone cooking fresh food so not many plastic trash either.
Everything looks actually organised, with running water and every hygiene facilities
(that's why festivals are usually done near or in actual campsites).
Here it almost looks like a hobo community,
They probably shouldn't be thousands in the middle of nowhere without trash bins and running water lol

Critical thinking is what people need to pair with this sort of mindset, otherwise you get what you describe. To reflect on some of the other comments about trashing the areas, I absolutely agree with this. I was at a group like this in 1979 with my parents being the music entertainment of their gathering, however, we were surrounded with people on so many drugs and overdosing, the ambulance was making a constant run back and forth to the hospital. There were bunches of them that ended up with STD's afterwards, pregnant and not knowing who the father was because they were free loving, and left the area completely covered in garbage. Another thing that I've noticed at many of the these gatherings throughout the years is that it is more a celebration about not doing a darn thing. There is no contribution to community as in picking up and doing what needs to be done. There are the few of the group that end up supporting the rest that do nothing. More and more over the years it is just a bunch of younger people looking for a way to get out of adulting.

Ahhh, I see you failed to grasp the deepest of all deep truths, mate. Let me enlighten you: random events of tool theft are a natural part of the flow, when human consciousness sinks to a very low vibe, due to extreme lack of love, moonlight and dreads. It is a part of the process, when conectedness runs low. But as every ebb must naturally end at some point, the tool robbers will either eventually see the light, return the tools they nicked, get hugged, smoke a pipe of reconcilliation and grow dreads themselves, OR they will take the tools and go back to town, to serve some corporate slave and stay in the darkness of greed... Eventually, however, we will all end up wearing tie-dyed rainbow tunics, and making wild love under the Forest Moon. That, my friend, is the true meaning of being conected. Can you see the light? 😂💖💥

I found a rainbow gathering in Idaho when I was young and I thought about what had happened to the whole idea.
    Now I know.
    The experience was awesome.
All the most positively different people all together to be living in harmony with each other. I was part of a group of people that went on a hug patrol and reached out to people with a hug. Most awesome experience. Then, almost outta no way, the sky grew dark on the mountainside of the land we’re all enjoying life at the moment. Below us is lightning now, the thunder is what really got people running for cover, and for next 20 minutes we all experienced Mother Nature at her best. The storm was loud and strong, but didn’t last long.
The sun came out and no one was hurt. We all got back to our gathering things and it was something I remembered doing when I was younger.
Wow, to see that it’s still going on, well, tells me that it’s a good thing and should be experienced at least once in a life time...safe journeys

Trust me....inside the hippie world there is more petty bickering and drama than they admit to. It's mostly a world of posers. Drugs, music, and fashion, are the core values of most hippies. The other fluffy stuff they talk about is the first thing to go when times get tough. Truth.

I used to do the rainbow circuit. People know what they are doing in that community! People build kitchens and stages on the spot with what is available. They build a kiddie village with play equipment, Leave no trace, you can do workshops- cooking classes, drumming and music lessons, meditation yoga and other spiritual practises, medicine and wild crafting workshops, clowning and dance workshops, building workshops, ect. There are performances and music events. There is a medical tent with dr.s and nurses to assist anyone who needs medical attention, massage tent, shiatsu body work of all kinds. At night there are fires to join and a trading circle that runs day and night whenever people set up things for trade. The national and world gathering are very well run and the elders teach the newbies how to integrate into the community. It’s very well run

He understands the importance of having good role models and respect. I am a consertive and applaud his words, prayers, and actions. And though this commune may have some undesirables, I heard no condemnation from him. But what I did here, was his concern for teaching the younger generation values. They were people from all over the world, France, Peru, Canada, and so on. People are mostly nude but respectful, and unlike music festivals, they do not shove drugs in your face and are very very very anti-alcohol. The music, culture, and friendships at the rainbow gathering are incredible. It is also great for people who are homeless but do not want to be in the streets. Money is not important at all as kindness and peace. They give food, shelter, and expect nothing in return but love. Call it corny but I call it home.

Well at least the ones I attended, there was a huge cleanup at the end and no one was allowed to leave without taking full trash bags with them. People went from campsite to campsite collecting garbage before the end. There were people waiting at the entrance, with this massive pile of trash bags from the huge cleanup, and they'd make you open your car door and just start tossing in bags. It was everyone's responsible to throw these trash bags out, whether you want to or not. They'd just throw them in, wouldn't take no for an answer. This was about 15 years ago though, don't know how much it's changed since then

This is like a sloppy alter ego to our trips, and our trips are a lot of fun.....and if anyone ever did get out of hand, which no-one ever has, we are all former military and know how to control those persons and situations in a snap. Good luck to all those going to this Rainbow Fest, we'll stick with our Camo Campout.

That’s definitely a quality in a person that makes me think I am going to take any advice from them. 🙄 I have never understood a person who thinks they have the best advice for someone they don’t know at all. And sadly there are so many pricks like you in the world.

Island Mike Yeah, I'm definetly triggered when someone I don't know make assumptions about me. And aww! Thank you. I am beautiful and unique.
