The "flow" is something I've been chasing ever since I first started learning to dance, and now I see it in everything I do. Playing video games, dancing, doing dishes, cooking dinner, writing - you learn how to put yourself into that mindset. And even though I'm getting better at it slowly, I feel as though this is something I will pursue for my entire lifetime. When you reach that state of mind, it feels like you're no longer making deliberate actions, and more those deliberate actions are coming to you. You move with precision even though you are putting the bare minimum of conscious thought into what you are doing. It's a state of bliss. I feel contentment when I am vibing to some good music and cooking food or playing video games. I'm convinced this is the secret to happiness.
I'm Dude Man and thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

I need your guidance, how exactly did you achieve this?

    • @t3hKEG
      @t3hKEG 4 ปีที่แล้ว +295

@@mri6916 Hard to explain because everyone's mind works differently, but I believe everyone can enter a flow state and probably have before. It's learning to recognize that feeling that is the key, in my opinion.
Have you ever found yourself so engrossed in a task in front of you that when you realize how focused you've become, it's almost like you've "popped" a bubble around yourself and suddenly become aware of how UNaware you were of your surroundings? You were probably in a flow state. The way athletes, artists and gamers alike put this to work is very, very similar. It's a combination of lots of practice and allowing yourself to slip into "the zone."
When performing or learning an unfamiliar task, our conscious brain normally operates on Beta waves. This kind of brain activity lends itself to more cognitive tasks that are involved in problem solving and decision making. It is almost impossible to slip into a flow state in these conditions. Alpha waves are where the flow state lives, and this can only be achieved once the task at hand no longer takes so much conscious thought.
Everything, from learning a basic step in dance, to learning how to line up that perfect headshot in a video game, needs to be practiced to the point where it feels effortless. When you've practiced certain mechanical motions - simple or complex - to the point where it's become muscle memory, that action no longer takes a large part of your mental "bandwidth." Muscle memory is a very powerful thing.
Once muscle memory is established, your mind has room to focus on what the next logical step to take in your flow is, and your body simply follows. Conscious action is slow and deliberate, while actions performed in a flow state feel quick and effortless. They're essentially just instinctual reactions that you've seared into your brain with repetition.
For example; when I dance, my "flow" is deciding which move to transition into next based on the current position of my body, arms and legs. When I play video games, my "flow" is deciding where on the map to move next or trying to predict what my opponent will do next. In both these examples, the action of performing a dance move or attacking my opponents is the mechanical motion that should be so thoroughly ingrained in my brain that executing will feel (and look) effortless. It's the same with sports, martial arts, cooking, etc.
The easiest way for me to slip into this feeling is when I do dishes with some music on. It's gotten to the point where doing dishes is almost therapeutic for me. Scrubbing and rinsing is such a simple and familiar mechanical motion that I can fall into a rhythm with it. Falling into a rhythm helps me go even deeper into a state of flow, like a trance. You feel your sense of time and space slip away. Then it's just learning to recognize that feeling and allowing yourself fall into it.
      Sorry for the literal novel.

@Mr T think of all those things you said ... the build up to all those natural disasters arent even fast relative to how i see time personally. If humans have time to use technology to track and evacuate them those things arent in a hurry. Its takes time to build up before the disaster works through its destructive path.
Good news for you einstiens theory of relativity backs the idea that time is relative to early for one is too late for another.

    • @matthewcuriel991
      @matthewcuriel991 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

The idea is that naturally nothing is rushed although society now is about rushing to get things done. Which there is reason for it in a lot of cases but you lose track of how artificial the approach is that when people get the job done you lose track of how unnatural it is and how poor the quality of work is and instead you label it with terms like prodigy or whatever to neglect the effort they put in.
You gotta admire the path ... not just the destination. So many people do ehatever just to get the job done even if you have to cheat or exploit and although you may find success you will never find satisfaction in life. You have allowed yourself to break from the natural flow of things at tht point.

Flow is truly a beautiful thing. I’ve been playing the drums for about 5 years now. I often play with my bandmates and when we improvise, if I keep playing the same groove with my eyes closed I can enter flow. It’s like time goes away, and all you care about is doing this perfected action with your hands and feet. What’s so weird about it is when I enter flow, I consciously amn’t thinking about how I’m able to do what I’m doing, I just do without thought. It’s action that is a non-action.

Yes and you assume no responsinility for anything when you are in "the zone. It is a crock of baloney! This is just another "religion" in disguise. It is the devil's work to always throw cheap imitations of the Bible. You are putting your trust in a Chinese philosophy who you have no clue who wrote it, written way after the Bible was introduced. Taoism uses the Bible principles and twists them in a philosophical manner in order to persuade you into thinking that you have discovered something new. It uses terms as "The Way" which is another name used in Christianity to describe Jesus. Many other biblical principles are taken (or should I say stolen) in order to form the Tao. Since the devil's objective is to make mankind doubt the realness of God through religions such as these. This is why the Tao has no god, no need for redemption and everything is acceptable. They can't even explain their own theory of the Ying and the Yang. They thrive on the confusion and ambiguity of their belief. The devil knows that people get turned on by these foreign mystical ilusions of peace and love, especially when it involves some kind of Chinese monk up in a mountain somewhere, with a shaved head, robe, beads, a few candles with a harp sound in the background. People just eat it up with no questions asked. But the Bible already predicted that these religions will keep growing and more new and revised versions of it, will spread. There are many imitators of "The Way" but there is only one Way and His name is Jesus Christ.

I always had issues with that quote. Because it would imply that the water can hold itself because it becomes the container. Which is just incorrect. Water takes the form of whatever you put it in because it’s easier than breaking the container. However if you pour it into a paper bottle that has not been treated with hydrophobic items. The water will break through the container because that is easier then taking it’s form.
Just do what’s most natural to you. I also believe not everyone can be water. In that way I believe there is some truth to personalities and the elements.
I am too much like earth. I am unintentionally stubborn and will not bend. And confronting me can be end up with blunt trauma so to speak.
Sure I can provide a very stable foundation and my personality is consistently unmoving with my principels.
Try building on water without heavy use of floaters. Everything you build on water will take more energy from you and none from the water.
But earth can erode. Rock can break and splinter.
Maybe I can try and become a mudflood. And combine water with earth. 🤔

When I started reading, for some reason, I lost all ego and ceased thinking, instead bringing a strong presence to the task at hand. I felt like I wasn't reading, but rather a higher power was reading through me.
When I finished, the whole class, including the teacher, were speechless. It had nothing to do with the words I was reading. Rather, it was the sense of presence with which I read the words. I had nothing to do with it. All I did was become the vessel through which a higher power was channeled.

Taoism tells us there's always a balance to be struck: both rest and struggle are key to development because they are two sides of the same coin much like yin and yang. Too much of one brings a greater need for the other.
      Hope this answered your question!

I've long been aware of "the zone"-a place where athletes go when they are at their best, but by learning about flow, I now realize that it's always a place I want to be. Most often I want to achieve flow while persuing my hobbies, but there are times when I achieve flow at work and my job becomes effortless. Learning about flow has been very eye opening, and I look forward to consciously getting to that place.

When I no longer try to control the things around me the things around me stops controlling me. My depression and anxiety still remains, but I laugh at them because they are like silly monkeys chattering and foolish. But it is also entertaining and funny. The bad thoughts still comes but they are just thoughts. Thoughts are ideas and image in the mind gathered to tell a story. So I listen and observe the stories these bad thoughts tells me and I tell them my own. Live in the moment and allow them to go free, they will set you free.

I was suicidally depressed my entire life...literally ever since I can remember, which was around age 4....I reached the pentacle of these feelings in my early 30s, where I went through several extreme traumas that sequenced in a very swift chain reaction of one another...it reached a point where I had resisted the urge to commit suicide so many times that I began to just act out in completely insane ways...basically throwing myself into very dangerous situations in hopes that if I lived at 200 mph my death would swiftly follow...obviously, I'm still here...but I can remember one night I felt myself die...the person that I was was gone...and all that remained was a pile of ashes...then just as suddenly, I felt a fire begin to burn within those ashes and my true self rose out of them...someone who felt no more fear, sadness, or shame...things that had tortured me internally my entire life suddenly didn't matter any more...and I just began to "float"....this was almost 5 years ago, and I'm still in that state...I never even get angry, and i uses to have a really bad problem with anger...I don't get depressed, and I used to spiral into darkness and stay there no matter what I did to shake that feeling, like death was looming over me...I realized I have absolutely no control over anything in this world but myself...what others think or do or perceive is not a part of me...every single day should be appreciated for exactly what it is.... I'm so grateful, u can't even put it into words...I never knew there WERE words to sum up this way of being/thinking/living, but yeah...I have read about Taoism and such things before but it never clicked...I can't say I would have ever understood it until I just REALIZED it...makes me wonder what kind of traumas and harships these guys who coined these philosophies went though themselves to meet their own conclusions in the first place...

I struggle with severe and high functioning anxiety. I believe a lot of it is because of being told I need to be successful to mean something. In all honesty I just want to enjoy a simple life, a roof over my head and food in my stomach, security. I am glad to have found these videos as I believe they will help to this new way of life.

I kinda needed this right now.
The long and short of my life is work really hard because 1. My family kinda forced it and 2. Because others won't do anything in situations we're both involved in. I've been incredibly depressed since childhood and it's the worst during times that I can't due much (either burnout, physical exhaustion or simply being barred from taking action).
After a falling out with someone, I became interested in this topic. Watching this video and your video on the concept of Yin and Yang cleared up a lot. Non action was very underappreciated by those around me up until my late 20s. It was always confused with the REFUSAL to act when appropriate, which is not the same thing.
Thanks so much for making videos like this. There's far more to know on these topics, but it's a good place to start.

I feel like there is an expanded version of flow that interacts with your whole life. I find in my daily life that if I go with the opportunities presented to me consistently, then I'll start to see themes popping up. Or I'll have the same conversation topic with 3 different people in the same day. When I analyze the conversations it's usually the other person who brings up the reoccurring topic. This does not happen when I get depressed and go against the grain.

I remember playing video games when I was younger and my brother used to always be blown away how I could drive or fly around sharp bends and never crash. I always said I just "go with the flow" and also using the music on the radio stations to relax into the action. I feel like my frequency matches the bpm in the music in them moments that's why I was able to have so much skill. I don't know really but I've always felt it and struggled to explain it to people I know. I think it also correlates with going with your gut and deja vu. I know nobody will read this but if you have you a real one lol 😆

It's funny that as a Chinese guy I'm learning ancient Chinese philosiphy from a Dutch guy in English, life is funny sometimes.
And I've also found Bruce Lee's "Be Water" is also a concept of Flow State, which could be learned through Taoism.

    • @bredbred1630

i was thinking that too! i wonder if he learnt it thru taoism as well...?
