Build upon the things that already exist in our community. Get active in your local community gardens, replace your lawn with native biodiversity and gardens, open up a seed library and a tools library at a local center. Collect rainwater, have chickens, if you don't have access to land grow hydroponically. It's hard to completely turn around our lifestyle from urban to one-with-nature in one fell swoop, but as a community we can morph towards that goal. The more people the better.

When I saw all those women hugging the one who was crying I realized what being human is supposed to look like. So touching, we need this sense of community back in our lives, it is an emergency. Me as a Costa Rican who likes to explore and study nature dont really like this. It is ok if they want to come and live this kind of experience but if you are a Costa Rican these people will make you feel bad and look over their shoulders like if you owed them some kind of service for them coming here. Im White and have a good english so im treated pretty good but as soon as they realize you are from this land something switches in them. I love the fact that you people like it and enjoy it but I want to make sure you know that as hippie as it looks this is just a bussines and it is a branch of a corporation that you are supporting and is taking away the most beatiful lands to give it to the wealthy.

Unfortunately, here in the West we’ve replaced the forest jungle with concrete jungle which sucks the soul out of you. It’s no wonder the most preferred vacation destination we go to is nature. Recycling cans and glass baby bottles from hospital I worked in,lived in inner city well under means then in country with children,goats,hens homeschooling around ecology/thought/science. Now in a dying town still showing self reliance, ecology while encouraging literacy, replanting the very old trees dying around me. Wish I could have made more massive changes but my mother out law says never discount the change of 1%
this isnt really very hippie , i would say its neohippie for city kids who are into trends like minimalism, hipsterism and such. you can be a hippie anywhere you want, its more of a lifestyle then giving away stuff and planting crops. i was young and used to camp and fish and trek and be by myself a lot, that was the best time ever. then i did meaningless jobs for 20 years. now i just spend more time doing art, painting and music by myself, and i feel more hippie then i ever was. its an attitude and a feeling. and being in more solitude spaces and freeing your mind, and these are things u find yourself. if u need to be taught yoga, breathing and ceremonies, then the part of exploration is dead, you again have gone study mode and not figured things out yourself. being a hippie should be a spiritual, emotional, physical and mental journey that u need to take by yourself. however if this is a catalyst for u to open your mind then its useful i guess.

As a Costa Rican I've always been very hesitant about this type of communities since sometimes it seems like they're a bit unconcious about the place they are in an the local communities. Seeing this video helps me understand a bit more of the philosophy behind it and it's honestly pretty impressive in a lot of ways and I love the fact there is a major respect for the earth. That being said, I can't assume since Costa Ricans can look like any person of the video, but by the surnames and accents I assume they are not that many Costa Ricans in that community which is kind of sad and feels a bit appropiating in a way too.
They do is to teach how to care the land, plants with a permaculture, not just the horrible huge monocultive bananas plantations in costa rica that spray lots of chemicals ending killing the reefs and wildlife and workers working like slaves... Well you know.... I suggest you to go there and bring friends to learn how to do a properagriculture and take care your land

I'm a teenager but once I graduate and go to college I want to learn about horticulture and permaculture. I want to make great big botanical gardens and probably even live in a community like the one shown in this video. It's want my soul wants. I'm really passionate about saving the Earth and I always feel bad when I create unnecessary waste. Once I'm out on my own I'm going to try to reduce my waste as much as possible. Cult as a concept is controversial and not easy to define, but I believe it's most useful to look at specific dynamics (like manipulation) instead of broad definitions like "a group with shared idiosyncratic beliefs or goals". From there, you can start to make distinctions between cult dynamics and just general group dynamics. There are unhealthy group dynamics that I wouldn't necessarily classify as cult dynamics.

As a Costa Rican, it saddens me that most of the positive commenters are probably ignorant of how harmful these types of activities are to locals. Seeing how gentrified my country has been the last couple of decades precisely because of this idea of Costa Rica being a paradise on Earth fabricated for foreigners to grab and enjoy as they please is just so so wrong and you all could not care less. The cost of living for people on the coasts and tourist areas is exorbitantly high for actual Costa Ricans that what else is there left to do but leave our hometown/house/actual community to live in places where we can actually buy groceries. You can go back to your country which is probably way better off than any Latin American country but we have to stay in this mess (because yeah, it is not as nice when you have to live here as a Costa Rican, not an “expat”), while not being able to even visit our own beaches because we simply cannot pay your prices.
👏👏 these digital nomads are really f#%en a lot of Latin erican countries. Plus, they don't even bother to learn the language. They can't even pronounce Costa Rica correctly.
I think about this a lot when I hear of other Americans going off to Costa Rica like it’s this empty island or something. I think the community aspect is really awesome but I do agree with all the other comment saying that this should happen in cities and suburbs and this moving off to the jungle and beaches due to currency advantages is kind of modern day colonist
if you live in the EU, I highly recommend Galicia in Spain, or Northern Portugal, cheap, plentiful with water and mild winters. If tropical fruits are what attract you in, You can easily grow avocados and citrus, and bananas or papaya with some fine-tuning along with every temperate or mediterranean climate crop you can think of. The people here are at the mercy of neoliberalism and right-wing politics so their entire rural economy is based on destructive mining, forestry or cattle-raising industries. Luckily most of the land is still in the hands of regular people, who own human-scale homesteads of 1-5 acres. These traditional homesteaders, tend to enjoy foreigners and could use a lot of new ideas from permaculture, syntropic agroforestry and forest gardening. So any land you buy here will probably be much better off than in the hands of the local tycoons who are buying up land for cheap, polluting industries. As a Galician, please buy land here, I don't care if you contribute or not to the local economy or not, or create jobs, I just want people who will take care of the land in a regenerative way!

For me this is a form of feel-good exotic tourism/volunteering. Nothing wrong with that, however it doesn't appeal to me as it probably would when I was a teenager ot in my early 20s when I was single and looking for like-minded people.
So I'm for the general vibe of this video and the community it's highlighting, but there's an important point about this that I think gets lost. How many of the people in this community were Costa Rican? How much does the community contribute to undoing the centuries of exploitation and genocide that the native people of this region faced due to US imperialism? Is it really our place to come in as foreigners and take land to create our vision of a better world (and it is better, don't get me twisted) while simultaneously excluding the very people whose land we wish to use? You are drawing more and more people to Costa RIca, which, within the current system, leads to things like more streets and cars, more power lines, more deforestation and encroachment into native habitats. How about instead, you buy 100 acres of farmland in the middle of the US that's currently being used for monoculture agrobusiness farming and convert that into a permaculture system built on sustainable living? Think about how your vision and behavior affects those native to the place you are invading and the wider ecosystem. I'm not saying this is on the whole bad, but there are negative aspects below the surface which need to also be contemplated
This was my first thought too - I was recently at a virtual meeting by people setting up an "eco-village" here In Turkey which was basically like Marie Antoinette's toy farm at Versailles. But after I checked out the Punta Mona website, I was less suspicious. They do apparently work together with the local people. I don't know how well it works out, but their hearts seem to be in the right place.

But even in this sort of material it looks and feels like it caters to and is "for" foreigners and tourists in a manner that reeks of a history of colonialism. I know their intentions are pure, but like the roots of some of the practice are colored by that colonial past, and at least on a surface level, that aspect doesn't seem to be addressed

Interesting how they come to another country and exclude the natives, why not do it in the States? This all creates the idea that Costa Rica is just up for grabs for anyone that's from the northern hemisphere. Why don't I see them speaking Spanish? Trying to learn the culture of Costa Rica? People don't want to do the work of cultivating community and sustainability in their own neighborhoods, so they move away to idyllic lands, buy up the land, and create these isolated communities which are very very beautiful but extremely whitewashed and don't actually improve the lives of anyone who isn't living there. Maybe you see a lot of westerners creating places like this because similar places have never seized to exit in less developed countries. Frankly, I'd rather buy land in another country because of the warmer climate, it will allow me to grow more cultures and I wouldn't have sit at home and wait for the long months of winter to end. It's great that we are not bound to a place, even more so because each one of us has different needs.

I do have to say it seems lovely and looks lovely but there has been numerous people telling me that the organizers are really just in it for the money and for the people who really need assistance in life and are looking to seek a welcoming community this is not the place to go. Sort of like a “Fake spirituality” thing going on which doesn’t surprise me because I know some of these people there and I agree that they aren’t too loving or giving and more on the selfish side. Idk maybe one day it’ll change I mean the nature is really beautiful but for people to treat the land like it’s their property is not respectful to the locals and pachamama
100 to 150 USD a night. I'm from Costa Rica and when I first heard of this I thought it was a very cool concept. Then I saw: A) those ridiculous prices. B) the way some volunteers talk about the "great visionary founder peace be upon him" as some sort of saint Big Culty vibes. What's sad is that a lot of these privileged foreigners go there and leave with a weird impression of what Costa Rica is without meeting any local natives or helping small business owners in the area (very poor beach town that lives off tourism)

There are hundreds of intentional communities all over the states. And I bet you there are dozens if not hundreds of co-ops in your area if you just look. People are already doing this everywhere, you don't need to travel to another country to have this experience.
It's definitely a great concept and I'm sure there's tons of inspiration to be taken. But as a Costa Rican I would ask of you to consider also visiting the surrounding areas and support the natives and small businesses owners of the area, many of them live of tourism and have tons of wisdom. My issue with Punta Mona is their insanely high prices and how many of its visitors skip the smaller, unassuming NATIVE beach communities which probably inspired the project to begin with
Being able to disconnect from society and go somewhere with your inner child's passion sounds like a dream! I love nature and love nice humans. I'm a kid with anxiety, depression, adhd, and probably autism. I'm also apart of the lgbtq and other things society looks down at. It's torture, but the hippies are so welcoming, warm, and amazing! They are positive energy for me. While I've always been a hippie even when I don't try, I just connect more and more. It feels right.

As a native from where you're being an off-grid hippie there's real struggle and unfortunately severe affected marginalized groups that get into worse condition due to foreigners staying instead of visiting rising prices for locals that already pay for American prices with third world salaries. Look up places like Carpio or Leon Xlll too see if you're hippie lifestyle is really finding self-love and prosperity for others

I am all for alternative communities...except when they start asking for 'donations'. Also a lot of people who leave after an extended period leave and depending on situation, many will have no savings and expect other tax payers to help them out with government benefits. There has been many of these communities that have existed in America, especially in 1960s/1970s...and most of them failed. If a community like this is truly a better way to live, then it needs to be sustainable without financial help from the outside.
I always considered myself to be highly introverted until I went to a permaculture community in Costa Rica. I ended up living there for nearly a year and it changed my life!! Turned out I wasn't as introverted as I thought. When you're around a group of open and accepting people, you start to realize 'introvert' is mostly a label and a self limiting belief.. I guess maybe it also depends on whether or not you're around the right people. Connections in these places are deep, soul connections that can awaken something within you. Go for it!

I'm a former hippie who lived hitchhiking around a bit in US, Canada, Mexico and Central America. I loved that life, and hated going back to the States and getting the expected college degree and working 32 in some places I loved and other environments that were close to intolerable. But I miss being a vagabond. Would love visit that place for while before I'm too old to travel anymore. I also know some folks in Panama I'd like to visit as well, then check out Machu Picchu as las ruinas have always haunted me since my trip to Tikal and Chichen Itza, et al

My backpacking days are over but I'm trying to find a van that my brother could help convert into a travel van and just drive places, that is when the borders are all clear. When your joints go on you, travel becomes very painful.

I’m making the point that universally, no matter what your socioeconomic status is, if you can exit the Matrix however you’re able to detach, do so because it’s good for your health-genetic, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. My comment is based on recognizing them transform in the same way I did when I exited. I’m nowhere near a “privileged kid”, but I still made the executive decision to detach from the Matrix. I didn’t whisk away to a remote location with a private chef, but I did build my own True North of daily activities and personal focus where I currently live, that isn’t consumed by inconsequential, negative priorities. I had the same results: my hair grew thick, shiny, and long, my skin started to perpetually glow, and all dimensions of my health improved drastically, so did my overall quality of life. I incubated myself from engaging with the Matrix and it was a game-changer, like it’s illustrated for the permaculture.
I lived at PM for 8 months and it was life transforming. I grew up in the american south so it was an eye opening experience. I learned about Mushrooms, herbal medicine , art, off grid living, spwaking spanish, and yoga. I went back for almost 2 months in 2020. 💜

How does the founder of this place involve the local Costa Rican community? There’s a lot of westerners volunteering so I’m curious to know if this village is benefiting the local people, especially if there are any indigenous groups nearby. Because otherwise it does appear to be quite a euro-centric woofing/backpacker environment which are a privileged portion of the population.

I so wish these were more accessible and common. I’m over here stressing that I can’t find a higher paying job and letting it affect my self worth, meanwhile there’s communities like these where people value strengths that actually relate to our well being.

For example, they have their foods planned so the people eat “rice OR beans” wich are accesible here, REALLY ACCESIBLE. And that’s just the beginning. This place is expensive, ridiculously expensive. One thing that is remarkable is that Stephen manages to maintain his composure throughout this. That man must be laughing to himself all the way on the 25 minute boat ride to the bank.
My life goal is to road trip around, and then settle down off-grid. Who knows, maybe I will end up in Costa Rica... I am happy to know that I am not the only one who feels stuck in our society, and feels like a better way of living is possible.

Pretty short sighted to think everyone could live like this. Its all easy when you live in a tropical environment with an abundance of food and it feels like a vacation. But lets get real. 0.0001% of the earth is like this. Like to see you go North and survive the winter, in this life style. Good luck.
This video was not suggesting that everyone needs to live like this. I am not sure how that conclusion was drawn. But we certainly need to shift the way we do things on a massive scale and communities like this creating innovative sustainable ways of living that foster community are really important to showcase!
@@livingtheskylife but the video implies it, as does Punta Mona itself and this is the main problem. I have known Stephen for 22 years and I know his heart is in the right place but he acts like anyone can do this. The reality is he comes from a wealthy family and the overwhelming majority of people's dads can't buy them land at a young age or give them money to start a business. His denial of his privilege in this situation is going to continue to turn people off. He called his background middle class in an insta video and was called out by one of his friends because he wants to see himself that way, but in reality this place is a direct result of privilege. I was one of the original volunteers on this farm, we spoke a lot of Spanish and half the people we worked with were locals. It was free to volunteer. I still recognize my privilege of not being able to work for several months to live there. This video comes off as a community of Westerners disconnected from the rest of the country and it's people. Maybe this is the way since Padi passed away, that connection was lost.
Open up your mind to possibilities. By telling yourself you can’t do something because you don’t have the money is automatically limiting and shutting yourself off to ALL THE OTHER possible ways you could end up being able to travel somewhere you’ve always wanted to go. Get out of limitation and step into possibility!!!!
There's communities like this all across the world. It's a real movement and it's exciting. Get out there (if covid allows 😉), connect with your local permaculturists and make connections. These pockets of Eden have a great network system, you'd be surprised.
These things generally don't scale. However, you can be inspired by the same fundamental values while working with modern systems. A common mistake would be to overemphasize simplicity and romanticize the past too much. You want to be able to think strategically and move forward. Technology has come here to stay. You can't put the genie back in the bottle. You have to learn to tame the beast so it doesn't eat up the village.

I would just like to be in a community where people actually helped and care for each other (I was raised in a small town like that), but where you can also be alone and go off by yourself if you like. Never been much of a joiner, but do miss the comradery, acceptance and trust I used to know as a kid as long as I could have my laptop, I'd be find with living that way for a time anyway.

If you want to come visit my country, please do, it's beautiful, but try to inform yourself with the situation of the locals, our culture and what we have to offer, Costa Ricans have made so many advances on renewable energy yet they only mention what foreigners do. The real question is: How can we have more places like this in the world without charging tons of money to be a volunteer?
That was my thought. I would love to go do this but can't afford it.
Build upon the things that already exist in our community. Get active in your local community gardens, replace your lawn with native biodiversity and gardens, open up a seed library and a tools library at a local center. Collect rainwater, have chickens, if you don't have access to land grow hydroponically. It's hard to completely turn around our lifestyle from urban to one-with-nature in one fell swoop, but as a community we can morph towards that goal. The more people the better.

When I saw all those women hugging the one who was crying I realized what being human is supposed to look like. So touching, we need this sense of community back in our lives, it is an emergency. Me as a Costa Rican who likes to explore and study nature dont really like this. It is ok if they want to come and live this kind of experience but if you are a Costa Rican these people will make you feel bad and look over their shoulders like if you owed them some kind of service for them coming here. Im White and have a good english so im treated pretty good but as soon as they realize you are from this land something switches in them. I love the fact that you people like it and enjoy it but I want to make sure you know that as hippie as it looks this is just a bussines and it is a branch of a corporation that you are supporting and is taking away the most beatiful lands to give it to the wealthy.

Unfortunately, here in the West we’ve replaced the forest jungle with concrete jungle which sucks the soul out of you. It’s no wonder the most preferred vacation destination we go to is nature. Recycling cans and glass baby bottles from hospital I worked in,lived in inner city well under means then in country with children,goats,hens homeschooling around ecology/thought/science. Now in a dying town still showing self reliance, ecology while encouraging literacy, replanting the very old trees dying around me. this isnt really very hippie , i would say its neohippie for city kids who are into trends like minimalism, hipsterism and such. you can be a hippie anywhere you want, its more of a lifestyle then giving away stuff and planting crops. i was young and used to camp and fish and trek and be by myself a lot, that was the best time ever. then i did meaningless jobs for 20 years. now i just spend more time doing art, painting and music by myself, and i feel more hippie then i ever was. its an attitude and a feeling. and being in more solitude spaces and freeing your mind, and these are things u find yourself. if u need to be taught yoga, breathing and ceremonies, then the part of exploration is dead, you again have gone study mode and not figured things out yourself. being a hippie should be a spiritual, emotional, physical and mental journey that u need to take by yourself. however if this is a catalyst for u to open your mind then its useful i guess.

You have to go inward to alchemize and bring in your true natural highest vibration. If living in this place in the video would help that, then you’ll naturally be led there. But if it isnt what your soul really needs to grow from lessons or remember its own Light and such, then your journey won’t find you ending up there.

As a Costa Rican I've always been very hesitant about this type of communities since sometimes it seems like they're a bit unconcious about the place they are in an the local communities. Seeing this video helps me understand a bit more of the philosophy behind it and it's honestly pretty impressive in a lot of ways and I love the fact there is a major respect for the earth. That being said, I can't assume since Costa Ricans can look like any person of the video, but by the surnames and accents I assume they are not that many Costa Ricans in that community which is kind of sad and feels a bit appropiating in a way too.

I'm a teenager but once I graduate and go to college I want to learn about horticulture and permaculture. I want to make great big botanical gardens and probably even live in a community like the one shown in this video. It's want my soul wants. I'm really passionate about saving the Earth and I always feel bad when I create unnecessary waste. Once I'm out on my own I'm going to try to reduce my waste as much as possible. Cult as a concept is controversial and not easy to define, but I believe it's most useful to look at specific dynamics (like manipulation) instead of broad definitions like "a group with shared idiosyncratic beliefs or goals". From there, you can start to make distinctions between cult dynamics and just general group dynamics. There are unhealthy group dynamics that I wouldn't necessarily classify as cult dynamics.

As a Costa Rican, it saddens me that most of the positive commenters are probably ignorant of how harmful these types of activities are to locals. Seeing how gentrified my country has been the last couple of decades precisely because of this idea of Costa Rica being a paradise on Earth fabricated for foreigners to grab and enjoy as they please is just so so wrong and you all could not care less.
The cost of living for people on the coasts and tourist areas is exorbitantly high for actual Costa Ricans that what else is there left to do but leave our hometown/house/actual community to live in places where we can actually buy groceries.
You can go back to your country which is probably way better off than any Latin American country but we have to stay in this mess (because yeah, it is not as nice when you have to live here as a Costa Rican, not an “expat”), while not being able to even visit our own beaches because we simply cannot pay your prices.
👏👏 these digital nomads are really f#%en a lot of Latin erican countries. Plus, they don't even bother to learn the language. They can't even pronounce Costa Rica correctly.

I think about this a lot when I hear of other Americans going off to Costa Rica like it’s this empty island or something. Thank you for giving the perspective of someone who grew up there because I wonder what the influx of expatriates is like for the locals. I think the community aspect is really awesome but I do agree with all the other comment saying that this should happen in cities and suburbs and this moving off to the jungle and beaches due to currency advantages is kind of modern day colonist
very true... spent good time in costa rica surfing in the 90...the Californication of Costa Rica is just sick.
if you live in the EU, I highly recommend Galicia in Spain, or Northern Portugal, cheap, plentiful with water and mild winters. If tropical fruits are what attract you in, You can easily grow avocados and citrus, and bananas or papaya with some fine-tuning along with every temperate or mediterranean climate crop you can think of. The people here are at the mercy of neoliberalism and right-wing politics so their entire rural economy is based on destructive mining, forestry or cattle-raising industries. Luckily most of the land is still in the hands of regular people, who own human-scale homesteads of 1-5 acres. These traditional homesteaders, tend to enjoy foreigners and could use a lot of new ideas from permaculture, syntropic agroforestry and forest gardening. So any land you buy here will probably be much better off than in the hands of the local tycoons who are buying up land for cheap, polluting industries. As a Galician, please buy land here, I don't care if you contribute or not to the local economy or not, or create jobs, I just want people who will take care of the land in a regenerative way!

For me this is a form of feel-good exotic tourism/volunteering. Nothing wrong with that, however it doesn't appeal to me as it probably would when I was a teenager ot in my early 20s when I was single and looking for like-minded people.
So I'm for the general vibe of this video and the community it's highlighting, but there's an important point about this that I think gets lost. How many of the people in this community were Costa Rican? How much does the community contribute to undoing the centuries of exploitation and genocide that the native people of this region faced due to US imperialism? Is it really our place to come in as foreigners and take land to create our vision of a better world (and it is better, don't get me twisted) while simultaneously excluding the very people whose land we wish to use? You are drawing more and more people to Costa RIca, which, within the current system, leads to things like more streets and cars, more power lines, more deforestation and encroachment into native habitats. How about instead, you buy 100 acres of farmland in the middle of the US that's currently being used for monoculture agrobusiness farming and convert that into a permaculture system built on sustainable living? Think about how your vision and behavior affects those native to the place you are invading and the wider ecosystem. I'm not saying this is on the whole bad, but there are negative aspects below the surface which need to also be contemplated

This was my first thought too - I was recently at a virtual meeting by people setting up an "eco-village" here In Turkey which was basically like Marie Antoinette's toy farm at Versailles. But after I checked out the Punta Mona website, I was less suspicious. They do apparently work together with the local people. I don't know how well it works out, but their hearts seem to be in the right place.

But even in this sort of material it looks and feels like it caters to and is "for" foreigners and tourists in a manner that reeks of a history of colonialism. I know their intentions are pure, but like the roots of some of the practice are colored by that colonial past, and at least on a surface level, that aspect doesn't seem to be addressed

People don't want to do the work of cultivating community and sustainability in their own neighborhoods, so they move away to idyllic lands, buy up the land, and create these isolated communities which are very very beautiful but extremely whitewashed and don't actually improve the lives of anyone who isn't living there. Maybe you see a lot of westerners creating places like this because similar places have never seized to exit in less developed countries. Frankly, I'd rather buy land in another country because of the warmer climate, it will allow me to grow more cultures and I wouldn't have sit at home and wait for the long months of winter to end. It's great that we are not bound to a place, even more so because each one of us has different needs.
As somebody who is an American citizen but has traveled the world via military life, I myself would prefer to buy land literally anywhere but America.
I have genuine questions out of curiousity, 1) is there a reason they chose costa rica over the united states where most of the people here are from the U.S ? 2) it seems most people there are white, thin, and young, can you speak to that ? I do have to say it seems lovely and looks lovely but there has been numerous people telling me that the organizers are really just in it for the money and for the people who really need assistance in life and are looking to seek a welcoming community this is not the place to go. 100 to 150 USD a night. I'm from Costa Rica and when I first heard of this I thought it was a very cool concept.
Then I saw:
A) those ridiculous prices.
B) the way some volunteers talk about the "great visionary founder peace be upon him" as some sort of saint

What's sad is that a lot of these privileged foreigners go there and leave with a weird impression of what Costa Rica is without meeting any local natives or helping small business owners in the area (very poor beach town that lives off tourism)

There are hundreds of intentional communities all over the states. And I bet you there are dozens if not hundreds of co-ops in your area if you just look. People are already doing this everywhere, you don't need to travel to another country to have this experience.
It's definitely a great concept and I'm sure there's tons of inspiration to be taken.
But as a Costa Rican I would ask of you to consider also visiting the surrounding areas and support the natives and small businesses owners of the area, many of them live of tourism and have tons of wisdom. My issue with Punta Mona is their insanely high prices and how many of its visitors skip the smaller, unassuming NATIVE beach communities which probably inspired the project to begin with

Being able to disconnect from society and go somewhere with your inner child's passion sounds like a dream! I love nature and love nice humans. I'm a kid with anxiety, depression, adhd, and probably autism. I'm also apart of the lgbtq and other things society looks down at. It's torture, but the hippies are so welcoming, warm, and amazing! They are positive energy for me. While I've always been a hippie even when I don't try, I just connect more and more. It feels right.

As a native from where you're being an off-grid hippie there's real struggle and unfortunately severe affected marginalized groups that get into worse condition due to foreigners staying instead of visiting rising prices for locals that already pay for American prices with third world salaries. Look up places like Carpio or Leon Xlll too see if you're hippie lifestyle is really finding self-love and prosperity for others

I am all for alternative communities...except when they start asking for 'donations'. Also a lot of people who leave after an extended period leave and depending on situation, many will have no savings and expect other tax payers to help them out with government benefits. There has been many of these communities that have existed in America, especially in 1960s/1970s...and most of them failed. If a community like this is truly a better way to live, then it needs to be sustainable without financial help from the outside.

I always considered myself to be highly introverted until I went to a permaculture community in Costa Rica. I ended up living there for nearly a year and it changed my life!! Turned out I wasn't as introverted as I thought. When you're around a group of open and accepting people, you start to realize 'introvert' is mostly a label and a self limiting belief.. I guess maybe it also depends on whether or not you're around the right people. Connections in these places are deep, soul connections that can awaken something within you. Go for it!

I'm a former hippie who lived hitchhiking around a bit in US, Canada, Mexico and Central America. I loved that life, and hated going back to the States and getting the expected college degree and working 32 in some places I loved and other environments that were close to intolerable. But I miss being a vagabond. Would love visit that place for while before I'm too old to travel anymore. I also know some folks in Panama I'd like to visit as well, then check out Machu Picchu as las ruinas have always haunted me since my trip to Tikal and Chichen Itza, et al

@@apollofateh324Why did I stop? Bad knees and a rotator cuff tear that I'm waiting on. Docs here are all pretty busy. Also, getting older. My backpacking days are over but I'm trying to find a van that my brother could help convert into a travel van and just drive places, that is when the borders are all clear. When your joints go on you, travel becomes very painful.

I’m making the point that universally, no matter what your socioeconomic status is, if you can exit the Matrix however you’re able to detach, do so because it’s good for your health-genetic, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. My comment is based on recognizing them transform in the same way I did when I exited. I’m nowhere near a “privileged kid”, but I still made the executive decision to detach from the Matrix. I didn’t whisk away to a remote location with a private chef, but I did build my own True North of daily activities and personal focus where I currently live, that isn’t consumed by inconsequential, negative priorities. I had the same results: my hair grew thick, shiny, and long, my skin started to perpetually glow, and all dimensions of my health improved drastically, so did my overall quality of life. I incubated myself from engaging with the Matrix and it was a game-changer, like it’s illustrated for the permaculture.

How does the founder of this place involve the local Costa Rican community? There’s a lot of westerners volunteering so I’m curious to know if this village is benefiting the local people, especially if there are any indigenous groups nearby. Because otherwise it does appear to be quite a euro-centric woofing/backpacker environment which are a privileged portion of the population.

But lets get real. 0.0001% of the earth is like this. Like to see you go North and survive the winter, in this life style. Good luck.
This video was not suggesting that everyone needs to live like this. I am not sure how that conclusion was drawn. But we certainly need to shift the way we do things on a massive scale and communities like this creating innovative sustainable ways of living that foster community are really important to showcase!
@@livingtheskylife but the video implies it, as does Punta Mona itself and this is the main problem. I have known Stephen for 22 years and I know his heart is in the right place but he acts like anyone can do this. The reality is he comes from a wealthy family and the overwhelming majority of people's dads can't buy them land at a young age or give them money to start a business. His denial of his privilege in this situation is going to continue to turn people off. He called his background middle class in an insta video and was called out by one of his friends because he wants to see himself that way, but in reality this place is a direct result of privilege. I was one of the original volunteers on this farm, we spoke a lot of Spanish and half the people we worked with were locals. It was free to volunteer. I still recognize my privilege of not being able to work for several months to live there. This video comes off as a community of Westerners disconnected from the rest of the country and it's people. Maybe this is the way since Padi passed away, that connection was lost.
I wish I could afford to travel like this. Nice to know that there is a place where people do respect nature
Open up your mind to possibilities. By telling yourself you can’t do something because you don’t have the money is automatically limiting and shutting yourself off to ALL THE OTHER possible ways you could end up being able to travel somewhere you’ve always wanted to go. Get out of limitation and step into possibility!!!!
There's communities like this all across the world. It's a real movement and it's exciting. Get out there (if covid allows 😉), connect with your local permaculturists and make connections. These pockets of Eden have a great network system, you'd be surprised.

You start by building a community yourself, I guess.
These things generally don't scale. However, you can be inspired by the same fundamental values while working with modern systems. A common mistake would be to overemphasize simplicity and romanticize the past too much. You want to be able to think strategically and move forward. Technology has come here to stay. You can't put the genie back in the bottle. You have to learn to tame the beast so it doesn't eat up the village.

I would just like to be in a community where people actually helped and care for each other (I was raised in a small town like that), but where you can also be alone and go off by yourself if you like. Never been much of a joiner, but do miss the comradery, acceptance and trust I used to know as a kid as long as I could have my laptop, I'd be find with living that way for a time anyway.

As a Costa Rican, that documentary is such a disgrace as is this place. If you want to come visit my country, please do, it's beautiful, but try to inform yourself with the situation of the locals, our culture and what we have to offer, Costa Ricans have made so many advances on renewable energy yet they only mention what foreigners do. Please come and support the locals. Not the foreigners thanks.

@@ronjasvane However, I will tell you that if you ever come to visit you could help in different ways and I will tell you how, for example, looking for a place with native Latin American owners (Punta Mona belongs to a foreign white man) or you can also volunteer with native people. :)
