The Wild Route: Leaving Work and Home for a Forest Life | NBC Left Field

  • Deep in a forest in North Carolina lies a community of people who've left their jobs, given up their cell phones, and seceded. A former cybersecurity official, an engineer, a woman and her wild blue-eyed eight-year-old...the inhabitants of Wild Roots, as they call this place, are disillusioned with the ways of the modern world and react by living with, and off, the earth. Living off the grid, they pickle bear meat, harvest chestnuts, and, during the summer, bathe naked in a nearby stream. And yet, every so often, they venture into town to check in. Are they happy with their forest life? Are they lonely? And, are we living in the real world, or are they?

Holy shit, you’re right! I keep telling people to keep the colors of rainbow spectrums in their lives to be freed from the grayness of their life, but it’s impossible to give freedom to the modern humans because of how black and white they are.
But ESPECIALLY grey, grey is the keyword as to why people are tired and depressed of life to the point of not caring about one another (Intrinsic value is super important now), it’s even worse with the lasting effects of the internet and the quarantines.

European explorers have always said to do as the natives do in their environment. But what is native exactly? According to the dictionary native is to be born of a place...so doesn't that make everyone who was born in the usa a native American? yes. Get off your high horse and pass the peace pipe. Or maybe you would like to discuss all those 7000 yr old Europeans found in the Windover Florida bogs. There is a bit of history that no one seems to want to address. 7000 yr old Europeans, well over 168 bodies found, in the florida bogs in windover, which changes written history and tells a story very similar to the trail of tears yet in the other direction. You weren't there, I wasn't there, same with the black slavery, its in the fucking past. Its a new level playing field, or is it with all the benefits of being a so called "native" to get to go to college for free while the rest of us who were born here against our will still have to pay because the color of our skin. Fuck your high horse. Wake up, you aren't living in a teepee.

I love your healing comment. Really trees are amazing for the mind. I have two big Kangal dogs that like to walk in bear territory for all the smells I suppose. I take them at twighlight or at night. There are big old trees along the route we walk. I REALLY look at those trees. I notice them REALLY and in my heart I say hello to them. It's amazing how they "react" to that. Once hey know you can REALLY see them and not just pass them by as a feature of the scenery. They seem to reach for me- minuscule amounts of course and more of a feeling really. But some of them I feel would like to grab me up with their tiny twigs on their long arms and hug me for REALLY seeing them. I look at their trunks sometimes while my dogs sniff around. It's a most incredible design: bark. In it are millions of little bugs that make their homes. In the branches are birds and squirrels. So many beings a tree looks after. Each one is really a saint. There is a sadness I feel when walking along in places where trees are planted like on roads. I am glad there are trees. But sometimes I feel their deep yearning to be natural: to grow in large, unbound groves with others of their type. There is great magic in natural places. It is the greatest healer and the greatest awakened there is. In that moment, it truly is heaven. Peace. Thanks for your comment. Sometime call a cloud. Talk to it from your heart and give it praise for its beauty. It may come closer. You may be able to invite it to do many things. That's how weather controllers get their start. Whatever you learn, please benefit all beings. I know you will. I am a mother of 5 grown children. I have learned so much watching them and their age group friends. Technology is important. But so is nature. I think we can combine these carefully and with compassion. Much love, Butterfly

yes it's a bit of a long story but that's the short version of it.I gave. I always worked out my whole life.I got hurt at work and was feeling very sick. I would work come home shower eat sleep. on my days off I'd sleeep. life was not like it was.
Then I hurt my ankle badly for over 6 months and could Barley walk. Stressed out with life and personal things going on.
I decided to focus on myself. I was researching stretching , exercises and things I could do for my health issues and I started getting massages and I got back to nature by walking in a big beautiful park with lovely trails trees rivers. its a very uplifting place, safe and convenient. very close to the massage clinic.
The beauty and fresh air and moderate interaction with people was good for me and my soul. The first walk I felt physically horrible but I knew that would be the case. I just enjoyed the fresh air and nature and the quiet. I kept on doing that and other physical activities. I met young as well as old people add talked. It really helped my spirits. I was able to take a deep breath and relax and get some oxygen and just come back to myself to let everything go. As I got better I started getting into woods trails by the ocean they have way less people but are so peaceful. once you get on the trail you can just breathe and relax. your getting the good negative ions. fresh air the beautiful ocean , nature. I really think it helps your health, physically and mentally.
When I'm there I can't describe it I feel free. I feel at peace. I feel relieved.
I don't have the financial means to stay out and live there but I get out all the time just to get exercise and get the fresh air and its great. I always tell people"I'm getting back to nature" That they should try it.
It will bring you back and renew you.

Yes if you are able I would encourage it. I can relate to the man's feelings in the video. I feel like I'm just not happy and I'm working on it. I just don't like the typical rat race and focus on material possessions. I want to be in a place where I can enjoy life and feel that I can just be apperiated for me and that is more than enough. I don't want to an economic slave. I think this world just does not have certain things figured out just yet.

I think people "like" to live in the cities because it serves as a safe space for the domesticated. You lose a sense of self awareness and start to lack essential human skills. You resort to paper money to have someone provide the needs and the skills you have lost. Just turned 28 this month, been working my whole life. Ever since I left home at 18. Always been an outdoorsman, I am sooooo sick of the society that most of us live in today. Physically and mentally sick, I just want to move out in the sticks. Lived in Alabama my whole life, fishing - hunting all is second nature to me. I’m a loner, not very socially active - just me and my dogs living day by day. Living to die and dying to live. I feel like I’m stuck in a endless loop, like I just need to move one foot forward but I’m dragging a truck behind me. It really sucks being 28, no family left alive and no friends. I was quite popular in high school, played ball since peewees. After I hit about 20-21 years of age I just changed. Been a loner ever since. I don’t go out to eat, don’t go to any type of social gatherings. However I do live in the country, I struggle to pay bills and rent etc. I’m just ready to leave it behind, start new. The sticks are calling me.

I DID drop my phone (and my TV) about 14 years ago and never looked back. Honestly, I did not miss either of them. Since I was still working at the time, I could not go live in the woods, but I was simply AMAZED at how much happier I was without the phone and TV. Life became SO MUCH EASIER! I had my own solitude at last. It was, and IS, amazing how much my life imporoved. Just recently I bought a 2nd property far out into the woods (I live in the suburbs now, backed up against a nature preserve and I go walking for miles on the trails), but I will soon be on my 2nd property and sell my suburban home. Life just gets better and better. I could not even IMAGINE this wonderful life before I tossed my cell phone an TV. But it made all the difference. People make excuses for why they can't do that and they remain miserable. How long has man had cell phones? Ask yourself that question and stop making excuses as to why you can't toss your cell phone.

I am African and Native American and I live in a tiny cabin in the woods on property I purchased. I live up the hill from a tiny town. I bring Culligan water home in BP free containers along with other supplies. I grow my own food and even donate it to local food pantries, elderly, those in need and disabled. I use solar, an energy making invention and both wood and propane. My small income is more than efficient since my only utility bill cost is less than $40 a month when the temperatures hit the minuses. I spend my free time helping people. The woodland creatures around me don't bother me at all. The foxes, coy-wolves, eagles, bears, etc are excellent neighbors. The only creature that is dangerous to me is the same creature that was dangerous to my ancestors, the racist people down the hill. They shoot at me, have called the police on me for false reasons (a term called "swatting"), they claim bogus code infractions which I fought and won, to have my daughter taken which cost the county a lot of money and she now graduated at the top of her class and is in an ivy league university, they even vandalize my car so much that it is on it's last leg and to have me arrested and jailed on false charges for the first time in my life which I fought and won after nearly a month in jail. I have mostly all my teeth and get dressed up for worship. I am also educated and am a retired banker. You can live in society and still live naturally as I do, and still comb your hair, brush your teeth and bath. Sometimes I choose not to but again that is a choice. But like he said, when you are nonwhite, this country is very unfair if you live outside the demanded norm. I don't drink, smoke or take drugs and I stay to myself most of the time. But my neighbors are very dangerous for me to even speak with other than to say hi and bye. So be warned if you are a supposed "minority". But I love my lifestyle. And I still talk on the phone, play video games and watch movies on my devices. 😛

This reminds me of seeing a tent city built by the homeless. Sad little shacks and people who have worn out clothing and no place to bathe. But to be fair I've seen homeless in my city that looked much cleaner than these people, and they wear shoes.
I don't understand how they can have access to water but stay so dirty. And just because the stream looks clean and beautiful doesn't mean it's free from bacteria or animal feces. Many animals like to poop in water for some reason.

I was that kid shoving leaves up the nose in the 70s on a alternative commune. I live and work in the city now but visit every few months with the intention of returning when I have enough money saved for basics for the rest of my life. I see people driving around in cars worth more than I will need for the rest of my life! Real wealth is being connected to nature and good friends, no drugs or belief systems or religions to infect nature. It's about balancing the scales, extreme off grid or extreme city stress will make you unhappy. I still love aspects of civilisation, modern health care is great, space exploration, aspects of education etc, but feel genetically we are completely wired for small social groups with natural surroundings, living off grid on a community fits. However, it's not an escape! You'll face yourself and others emotions way more than you will in a busy life, small things are seen as big things because everything is amplified ten fold. Every community has political issues, even a small off grid community, apply a balance of alone time too.

If you die tonight, do you know where you're going? Did you know that Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven and He loves you?
Through Him, God offers you a FREE gift - forgiveness. All you need to do is repent, turn away from your sins and evil ways,
from now on put your faith completely in Jesus Christ and be obedient to Him.
      Explanation:
God doesn’t want anybody in hell because He loves us, but you must understand why
we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go
there. (Matthew 12:30) ''Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not
gather with me scatters.'' He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteouss, but
rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). God gave us free will and since Adam
sinned in the garden, sin is the nature of our flesh and we’ve all sinned.
(Romans 3:23) and the law demands death to those who sin (Romans 6:23). For
someone to be justified before God they have to be sinless, that's why everyone need Jesus Christ.
None of us are good in God’s eyes, because for God good means moral perfection. We all
have broken God’s commandments, we all have sinned in our lives so none of us
are good. ‘’For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is
guilty of breaking all of it.’’ (James 2:10). ‘’For God so
loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’’ (John 3:16) That’s why only Jesus can
save us, because He lived a perfect and sinless life and is the only worthy
sacrifice and died for our sins. We aren’t saved based on our good
deeds/works, but only by the grace of God through faith.
''For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -
not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
He said ‘’it is finished’’ (John 19:30), which means He paid the fine for our sins
(past, present, future) to be forgiven if we repent and trust in Him.
‘’Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that
times of refreshing may come from the Lord.’’ (Acts 3:19) Biblically, a person who repents does not continue willfully in sin.
Repentance is a turning from sin, and it always results in changed behavior (Luke 3:8). While sorrow from sin is
not equivalent to repentance, it is certainly an element of scriptural repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10). Do not play a hypocrite.
(John 3:3) Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."
If you confess that Jesus is Lord (John 10:30) and believe that God raised Him from the dead, then you’ll be saved. (Romans 10:9)
You are born again with the spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36)
Bible is the Word of God. You may ask how so because it is written by men. Just like a letter is written by a pen,
so is Bible written by God using men. Bible/God's Word was written over 1600 year period by 40 different authors and 66 books, all leading to the coming of God's Son - Jesus Christ. There is consistency of revelation throughout a long time of period, many prophecies being fulfilled.
In the Book of Isaiah you see details about how Jesus Christ suffered even if it was written a long time before His coming.
In the Book of Daniel 500 BC you can read about Alexander the great who lived 300 BC.
We are living in the last days and Jesus Christ will return soon.
2 Timothy 3:1 ''But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.''
2 Timothy 3:2 ''For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,''
Luke 21:11 ''There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.''
1 Thessalonians 5:3 ''While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.''
Matthew 24:39 ''And they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.''
Luke 21:31 ''So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.''
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 ''Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.''
Revelation 13:16-18 ''And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.''
Matthew 24:21 ''For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.''
1 Thessalonians 4:16 ''For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.''
Matthew 24:19 ''But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!''
Matthew 24:42 ''Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.''
Mark 1:15 ''The time has come," Jesus said. "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!"'
Get right with God and start your relationship with Jesus Christ right now before it’s too late, because there’s not much time left!. "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.’’ (Mark 13:32)
You may start with a simple prayer from the bottom of your heart, TRULY believing that God listens and
cares. (Jeremiah 29:13) ''You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.''
Get to know Christ through His word. At first I recommend reading Gospel of John and book of Romans. God bless you!

They seem a tad too stupid for that. Not really buying it all. Seems like vice made it, tend to "dramatize" reality by placing certain individuals into areas. They're all so well spoken and well rounded. Well adjusted too. Ex-techies who happen to be good with their hands and practical mechanics? Hard to believe. 4/10 tbqh famalam.

@@cowboyanimal6700 Yeah, it's absurd to think a former engineer is smart enough to figure out how to do blacksmithing or any practical mechanics. That's just crazy talk.

@@cowboyanimal6700 Excellent analogy, bro. Practical mechanics or blacksmithing is just as intellectually demanding a field as becoming an astronaut. An engineer would be totally lost making a cabinet, too. These dummies aren't smart enough to follow directions.

@@trugrit7210 Thanks Brah! I'm so glad you agree with me friendo. I can't even imagine them being able to figure out how to use a compass, nevermind blacksmithing. XD

I walked at 46. I worked in London as a Finance Director and had been unhappy for a long time....long hours, stress, commuting, living in a city. Then one evening after I'd chaired a conference I looked around the room at all the other Finance Directors, many of whom were older than me, and thought "Do I want to be here in 20 years?".
I resigned, sold my house, moved to Brittany and now live in a farmhouse. I'm not as unplugged from the.modern world as the people in the video but my time is my own and I'm close to nature on my land and surrounding forest. Like them I'm lucky to have made the money though I'm not as bitter or left wing. I also drink milk and hate soy 😁. The modern world has extended lifespan and is safer and more secure than at any past age. We need to acknowledge that.
Just walking my dog along the river as the sun rises and mist is on the water is heaven....back in London at the same time I would be on the Tube or stuck in traffic having already been awake planning my day for a couple of hours.
    No comparison.

Nice story. I think you have a better balance than others. You don’t have to sleep in the dirt to go back to nature.

I am moving in the forest myself. Good thing there is flat land nearby to grow me some food .
