Been watching these since the crossing to Hawaii. I feel like I'm watching someone have the best times of their life, transformational experiences. The positivity is overwhelming, great stuff. 22yr old mech e student, hope to get out there someday myself. Keep the videos coming, I know I'm gonna keep watching 👍👍
I'm so enjoying your videos. This brings so many people with you. I'm in chemo and your videos are so uplifting. Like being there. The simplicity of the 23ft boat fully rigged for ocean travel is amazing! Stay safe. Good luck selling your boat. Your editing is awsome.
Hey hey. Me too on the chemo. Good luck on your journey, i've had a summer of it here, and videos like sam's, or some of the great bushcraft stuff on YT has really helped me too.
Doesn't look easy to me. I've been sailing for a long distance before and he was having a semi-rough time here and there, I could tell, but he was relaxed about it so it was hard to perceive.
Life and Circumstance, not to mention Age/weakness and Health issues/injuries have kept many of us from the Journey. Thank You so much for being our surrogate. With yer Elan and technique, Not to mention "True Grit", you allow us into the cockpit in a way which allows us to live it thru you! And that is SO important!! YOU MAKE IT REAL fer the viewer! Some times I have to shower the encrusted salt and sweat off after viewing on of yer vids. Keep'em coming, Cap'n!
This channel is so much more enjoyable than most other sailing channels with big boats and all the gear on board at hand for litterally anything and everything. Sam is living the dream on a 23 footer and he dares to sail out there. A humble young guy that is so nice to watch his adventures without the big bla bla talk that most other channels have (especially Americans/Canadians). I had a 22 foot for 10 years which I sold last year and moved on to a 28 which I plan a big trip one day.
@RakeRocter Its neither of those things. It's an expression of how he feels for what was stated. However, YOUR attitude is infantile. To reiterate, grow up.
Lived in Hawaii from '68 to '72. My best friend's Dad had a 32 footer that we sailed from Haleiwa to Maui and Kauai many times. Just about the best fun I have ever had. Drank a lot of Primo beer....if it got rough, I puked a lot of Primo beer...rolled some pakalolo to kill the pain...oh, for the good ol' days. Enjoy it while you're young brother....it won't last forever. “The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.”
Wow Sam, look at your channel grow! You are a true sailor on your rig Swedish Fish. No fancy shmansy push button sailing for you. Yours is the one S/V channel I find myself grinning the entire time I watch you sharing your adventures. Brilliant!
I enjoy watching you sail, often times more than I enjoy sailing myself. I'm between sailboats currently, much easier to watch you sail than buy another boat. I cannot imagine anyone not liking your vids, plz keep 'em coming.
If Huck Finn had a sailboat he would have been Sam Holmes. I don't know why but the entire time I'm watching one of Sam's videos, I have a big grin on my face. Thanks for that Sam.
Red sky at night, Sailor's delight! Red sky in morning, Sailor's warning. Your videos make me miss being in the Navy! I was stationed on an oiler out of Pearl Harbor. Currently landlocked by corn and soy beans. LOVE your videos; started with the LA to Hawaii. Subscribed.
We had to chuckle at your ground tackle setup.... Also I noticed in one of the other videos is that SAME little orange dinghy that you paddled up to us in on Santa Barbara Island? TOTAL wild man! Let us know if you need any of the boat parts you are taking off stored in LA We will be here till March.
Many, many thanks for your efforts on this incredible journey. Hope the Disney thing goes through! You are our man in foreign ports and at sea. With you in thoughts one wave at a time!
This was such a good video Sam! loved the way you describe everything as you do it - That must take a bit when it is just you and the camera. I also appreciate how calm and cool you are about everything... you make it all look so fun! Cheers :D
I, too, starting watching we you left L.A. I am not a "sea" person (sea sickness, things like sharks, etc.) but I am glad there are adventurous people like you! I have not been able watch all your adventures in the Hawaii islands yet. What type of sea life have you seen out in the waters from your boat? Thanks for taking us along! You are a true inspiration for others to follow their dreams.
1st time hitting the subscribe button, totally bummed you will be landlocked for a bit!! Love your videos, love the simplicity, and love that it’s mostly about sailing!! I’m 2 years away from my early retirement and setting off!! My boat is in shoreline marina, love watching one of our locals just doing it!! Keep it up!!!
Yeah, I would've given in after a couple of hours of drifting. Then again, this boat did have an electric motor, so battery power was kind of at a premium by the sounds of things
That was a long slog beating into the wind for two days. I know this was filmed before the dive boat fire off the channel islands, single handing doesn't seem so dangerous after all, take care.....
The guys in Haleiwa harbor will be fishermen, you should chat with them about catching fish to eatand maybe trade some labor for a rod and reel. You do not have any Yet? Ride that bike around on the weekends and hit the garage yard sales early! they have many. Maybe you can pick up some gear. You should be trolling two lines all the time. Have a boogie board yet?? Get one for surf riding, wont take up much room. Good luck, Cheering you on from 90274
Awesome watching you set sail... Seeing how everything is done made me connect to a precarious adventure. That sailboat doesn't tip over?!? Because of its keel and physics, damn! That look like some good hard sailing. Love the map to end it. Great video
When I lived on Oahu, Haleiwa is where we saw a giant sea turtle, way bigger than the beach ones normally seen. Best boogie boarding there too. Still have mine, can't part with it, like an ol' friend. I keep wanting a large cat like the Sailing Zatara crew has, but only crew is my brother and I so far. Take care Sam, I felt the sadness in your heart at leaving to go back to work. Sailing gets into a person's heart and seeing the world! Amazing adventure awaits. Lucy
Thanks for sharing your adventures ! If it is not to much trouble, could you break down the cost of this trips ? Just a rough estimation would be cool :) Enjoy your trips .
Impressive your calmness in 8 ft. Sea. Twenty Seven days you swedish fish and blue water. You put the sea sickness patch on first thing after departing you still got I'll a few times do you think if you had not used it the sickness would of been much worse?. You sold your boat I in Hawaii did you get more same or less then your purchase price. Keep in touch with Olivia if so what port is at as of Easter. Her boat was 34 ft.? I liked the layout Cool hatch in cabin what is the name of that type hatch?
I used to work on the pride of America! Every Thursday morning till Friday mid-day we were in Kauai. I was wondering if you would come across the ship in your travels.
@@samholmessailing you probably did, the route used to be sat- Honolulu harbor, Oahu Sun and Mon- kahului, Maui Tuesday- hilo, Hawaii Wednesday- Kona, Hawaii Thursday and Friday- Nawiliwili, Kauai, with a cruise past the Napali coast. As another commenter said it's the only Jones act compliant, American flagged large passenger cruise ship. How do the larger seas you experienced between Kauai and Oahu compare to the larger seas you experienced while sailing to HI from CA. Larger, smaller, choppier etc? Nice authentic video! Fun watching! Thanks!
Sam the new Google pixel phones are going to have a astrophotography mode. I would think for sailing the ability to photograph the stars would be a must have.
What is it like sailing a boat with the the main sheet block and traveler across the center of the cockpit? I wonder what the rationale for a design like that is. You must constantly be having to step over it when you need to leave the helm. The main sheet on most boats I've sailed on larger than dinghy size had the traveler and main sheet block and cleat in the stern behind the tiller. I guess with self-steering on the boat, it isn't as much of an issue because the gadgets are steering the boat for you.
Hi Sam, and everyone, check out (Pipeline cam .org TH-cam, and Waimea Bay cam) you can stay at Waimea Bay or even Pipeline and everyone can watch you live on cam, If I was on Island I would paddle my surfboard out to visit you, be safe, you are a very relaxed sailor
Not just any ‘big old cruise ship’, that’s the only US-made, owned, and flagged cruise ship in the world, due to the weird ‘Jones Act’ which mandates ships that sailed between US ports be all three.
he's making a statement that society doesn't care about the ocean, it would jeopardize his safety if he did pick it up. Amazing trip Sam, have tried surfing in that bay Haleiwa !
Nice sailing bro.How often do you sail that crossing. Not sure if your local or International. Will look you up. Im coming next April: whats the beta that time of year. I'd like to cross opp direction. Either or.Got The Fishing Tackle squared away
Ive done it 4 times. Oahu to Kauai is easier than the other way around in my experience. There is a little bit of current. Check with the locals for weather that time of year. most of them don’t sail between the islands though.
