I grew up on the water but I never learned to sail. Always usually motorboats or jetski. Surfed my entire life I fish also. Anyway i currently sold my house and I'm building out a sprinter van its 75% done. Quit my job and I'm traveling the west coast down into mexico and eventually south america. My original goal was to end in belize but I'm just gonna keep going. Anyway I looked into sail boats before I bought my van the only thing holding me back was my lack of experience. But you've inspired me to start learning. I just turned 30 last month and I just look at all my friends working dead end jobs going home and doing the same thing everyday (same thing I was doing for 12 years). It gives me anxiety to be honest. I cant wait to get out in the world!!!!! Glad I found your channel dude

Sadly then stopped but got into bicycle 🚲 (emoji looks wimpy) and touring (🏕️⛺) , only 200 miles max in about a weekbecause of money and lack of sleep + with way too much stuff, Bob trailer, etc then motorcycle 🏍️ 🏕️⛺to Key West and Sturgis, hope fully Alaska eventually, this stuff thinking about a boat again as keep hitting water 🧐🏴☠️🥥👙 but now 😷🌴..
When I was growing up my dad had a Ranger 29 and the entire family (2 adults and 4 kids) would go out on week long trips in the Chesapeake Bay. It was a fantastic boat. I can’t believe what you have done on your 23 footer. Well done Sam. Keep up the good work.

I just spent 3 days on Kauai and now back on Oahu. 400 miles on rental car exploring the island & also sailed on the Northern Star (Capt Andy's). What a beautiful island paradise.

I love your videos, and I aspire to someday sail into the sunset without a care. Having lived in Hawaii and working as a pilot for Aloha Airlines, I can tell you that the trip from Honolulu to Lihue, Kauai, is usually less than 30 minutes. I always wanted to see what it would be like sailing between the two Islands. I have had friends compete in canoes between Oahu and Molokai, but most of the boating we did was local stuff for diving and partying. You are giving me the inspiration I need to get out into the world again.
I'm from land-locked Colorado and have never been on a sailboat before, but I absolutely love watching your videos! I feel like there are parallels between backpacking the Rockies and sailing - you put yourself at the mercy of absolute wilderness. @@samholmessailing I spent 9 years sailing my 34 ft sloop from New Zealand to California. I kept it simple too; no electric water pressure, etc, but did enjoy having an engine. Carried extra fuel for the trip to California from Hawaii. Good thing. Motored 7 days & nights crossing the North Pacific High. Engine is good getting through the lee portion of the islands and in and out of harbors. Had a similar anchoring set up to yours. 10 meters of chain then nylon anchor rhode. The nylon is like a big rubber bungie. No worries having the rope lay on the bottom in sand, where you might want more scope, but in coral, just shorten up enough to get the rope portion up off the bottom. If it's coral, you're going to hold, even with a short scope.

Be sure to check the deviation on your compass and watch you little tiller pilot that will be affected by those little magnets. 1 degree can make a big difference if you are forced to dead reckon for any length.

Sailing with Japanese is interesting, as all sailing terms are in English (were, anyway). I crewed for a Japanese Transpac team in a local race just before the Transpac one year. You will hear a stream of Japanese with an English sailing term in there somewhere. 設定する時間 spinnaker pole!

Alot of good books and videos out there, go to a local marina or yacht club and ask around to crew for day sails/races.... you'll pick it up fast!
