    My first original Macbook pro 2015 battery only lasted barely above 1000 cycles & died out after 4 years. Got an official replacement via Apple (they replace the whole bottom part of laptop except screen) & now 4 years later it's at 2300 cycle count but it still works well. Although I do keep it plugged in on charge a lot more than before, it was worth the official apple repair but wouldn't do it again as might as well buy a new model now. Shame in a way cause my 1st Toshiba when I was kid lasted me 8 years with no repairs.

    First day i had my acbook i downloaded aldente pro, had the thing for a year now, still the exact same MAh value as the first day. Charged to 100% twice in one year, i set the app to 60% and leave it plugged in all the time, if i´m on the go it never goes underneath 40%. I am a bit extreme tho and i make it my lifes mission to maintain high battery health on all my devices, but hey i have a 6 year old dyson that i also never fully charge more then 3-4 times a year, and the battery is still perfect, giving me almost 40 minutes of usage while some friends have to buy a new battery every year

    • @battery_wattage
      @battery_wattage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      60% is the sweet spot for Li-Ion longevity. It might outlast us all😂.
      I will say that Dyson does not charge to a true full charge and actually gives you less usable capacity compared to what the cells are capable of. Think of it as a permanent aldente to give some convenience of leaving it on the charger. It still causes more wear than what you are doing. A Dyson I gifted to a family member who owns a salon still gets over 30 minutes compared to the 40 minutes when new after about five years. There is no way a li-ion battery could retain that capacity after being left on the charger 95% of the time, so it is working.
      Roughly 75% health after my estimate of 600 cycles and being left “full” is very impressive, so Dyson is not actually charging to full. I find it interesting that your friends need to buy a new battery every year. Most likely due to frequent high powered use and not leaving it on the charger.

  • @battery_wattage
    @battery_wattage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Very good info that actually shows facts. I will say that overcharging is virtually impossible with how Li-Ion battery management works (which literally prevents unsafe conditions. Every time you charge to full, bms is charging as close to full as possible without overvolting; that’s why it takes forever to go from 80-100.)
    Interesting fact: a full charge is literally the maximum amount of wear a manufacturer decides is acceptable. For something like earbuds or cordless vacuums that are almost constantly on a charger, manufacturers will sacrifice some full charge capacity for the convenience leaving your device plugged in constantly with minimal wear. For other applications like drones or high performance, higher voltages are used to provide more capacity in the same amount of weight and more power, at the expense of more wear.

    • @uBreaky
      @uBreaky 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Turning on/off or restarting won't stress the battery; you will just experience a small peak in CPU usage for about 2 to 3 minutes (or more on old Intel Macs), as more CPU usage equates to increased energy consumption. However, this impact is negligible within a full 100% cycle.
      It is better not to close and reopen apps if you plan to use them frequently throughout the day. There is no need to turn off your Mac/iPhone every night, but a small restart, like every 72 hours, for rotating services/processes can be helpful in keeping your device 'fresh'.

    • @battery_wattage
      @battery_wattage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I strongly recommend reading Accu Batteries article titled Charging - research and methodology. It goes more in depth and provides real world examples of phones that have different voltages. Limiting charge to 70-80% can drastically extend cycle count by 2-4 times. That’s 200-400%, not 7%.
      Unfortunately because there are so many variables that changes a battery’s rate of wear, it is difficult to objectively measure how much you can extend your battery’s life. Each individual has their own usage characteristics, but at a bare minimum, you can expect at least double the cycle life by almost never charging to >80%. That’s how early Teslas with normal Li-Ion cells inferior to today’s batteries still have over 80% health after 200k miles.

    • @wizzyiuu
      @wizzyiuu 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @battery_wattage that's really interesting. How come tech manufacturers don't just limit how much can be charged or discharged to improve battery health. Although the 70% - 80% is just impractical though.

    • @battery_wattage
      @battery_wattage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wizzyiuu well you gave one reason; it can be impractical to limit charge sometimes. For an EV, you almost never need to drive 200+ miles every single day, so it is not inconvenient to limit charge (though newer lithium iron batteries can handle full charges much better and can regularly be charged to full).
      Smartphones, laptops, etc., are personal devices with weight limitations. We still have not hit a point where personal device battery life is good enough to justify almost always having a limit. If you did put a permanent limit on a smartphone or laptop, you are literally having 20-30% of battery wasted weight and less useable capacity. Manufacturers are literally balancing cycle life and capacity when setting max voltage as stated in the article.

    Your video is interesting but the information is always very mixed and unclear. Apple advises against using any extra tools for battery management, says that the same system is optimised for battery management itself and preserving its life. Several users have complained with “al dente” adverse reactions and worsening, I have tried and I find the idea of having to use a maximum of 80% and take advantage of at least 3 hours less if they are around, for fear of damaging it, I bought a 4k Ferrari I want to use it for its maximum potential. Otherwise it makes no sense to buy products with larger batteries and then not be able to take advantage of 30% charge per cycle, your thinking will technically have its reasons, but Apple still does not recommend the use of third-party apps for charge management.

    • @kayglifts
      @kayglifts ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same question about whether Aldente Pro makes a difference or not. However a colleague of mine lost battery health to 81% over the course of a year, which is very unfortunate. I understand that it's a single data point but that has at least convinced me to try out Aldente Pro. So far, so good. 27 cycles and 100% health. Whenever I have to go out, I use the "top up" function to charge my battery all the way to 100% and take it out. Of course, this adds a layer of inconvenience but worth a try imo.

    • @uBreaky
      @uBreaky 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kayglifts Always keeping the battery between 30% and 80% is not a great idea over time; that's why some people using Al Dente have problems with it. Making one complete charge/discharge occasionally (like once per week or every two weeks) can prevent this, as they mention on their website. Setting a reminder in an app can help avoid issues with the application.
      Additionally, Al Dente is only interesting for people who keep their Mac plugged in all the time. If you only keep your Mac plugged in occasionally, such as on Sundays, you don't need Al Dente. Charging to 100% is not a problem if you're going to use the battery after the charge, so there's no need to reduce your Mac's autonomy if you plan to use it on battery. This won't cause any inconvenience at all
      So using the top up function is the best things to do, without any bad effect for the battery

    • @sptz87
      @sptz87 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      These kinds of comparisons are why apple fans are mocked all around. Using a Ferrari to its capacity has nothing to do with limiting your bloody battery to 60,70 or 80%. Mainly if you use it over 90% of the time plugged in. Apple's own adaptive battery doesn't work. It kept mine at 100% at all times. It didn't learn jack shit. Al Dente just simply works and has kept my battery at 98% health. If you need it on the go just press the "top up" button to charge to 100%.
      Apple NEVER recommends 3rd party apps dude, like... it's Apple.

    • @deathstare0
      @deathstare0 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      bro its fcking apple of course they wont recommend third party apps, not charging past 80 percent is better for all laptops not just macs thats just how batteries work, they say charging to 100 is fine and such because they expect and want you to change your battery every 2 years whitch fking sucks, also 80 percent of a small battery is obviously smaller than 80 percent of a large battery so seeking a bigger battery doesnt make no sense.

    • @battery_wattage
      @battery_wattage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1000 cycles is more theoretical. It does mean true full cycles and not partial cycles, but not with the battery left fully charged for a long time.
      Fast degradation is mostly caused from prolonged state of high and low voltages. My guess is your charging schedule is not consistent enough that optimized charging is not working properly keeping the battery full (a full li-ion battery is stressful like going to a buffet and constantly adding another bite of food once you can fit another bite). If you are constantly plugged in and rarely worry about running out of battery, I recommend the aldente app and set your limit to about 70%. It will literally extend battery life similar to how EVs have battery limits that allow them to go >200k miles with >80% health. Unfortunately because of the already accelerated wear, you might only get 400-500 cycles before reaching 80%, but remember, a battery is still useful at 60%.
