    Hey Mackenzie! I'm a high school coach at a TINY little high school teaching new new hurdlers how to run hurdles. There are a lot of hurdle videos out there, but so far your video has been the most useful, and I've shared it with my atheletes to introduce them to running hurdles. I'd LOVE you to do more! Your breakdown is very practical and teaches them far better than I can.

    When I first started hurdling I put hurdles in lanes 2 and 4 then stretched a length of crepe paper between and taped it to the hurdles. No fear of hurting myself. I like the foam hurdles if you can afford them. When you break the crepe paper just tape back together. Easy. Clean up after practice and throw away.

    I have a track meet Tuesday and ive made it over the hurdle a lot of times, it’s my lack of confidence that stops me I’m doing 300m hurdles and i’m very scared for it so many thoughts stop me then I forget my movement and just give up, I don’t wanna do that anymore I wanna have confidence i’m not gonna win my first track meet and thats okay I just keep doing the drills and stuff ( my coach does those drills with us, we didnt have foam or nothing we have to start with the hurdle in the grass , last year I fell on a broken hurdle and ive been scared ever since ) Do you have any advice on like confidence and how I can grow it?

    • @mackenziesullivann
      @mackenziesullivann  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Confidence can be hard to master in the hurdles. Especially after a fall. But all hurdlers fall! I took a hard fall just the other week. And it’s easier said than done but take it one hurdle at a time, don’t focus on the whole race. And keep on focusing on your drills you’ll slowly get more comfortable with the race. Good luck you got this!

    Great video! I found the background music too loud and distracting, but that could be because I'm old. :)... Looking forward to part 2. Any chance of providing and demonstrating a preseason, in season and late season set of workouts for novice hurdlers. Maybe a series from beginning to racing? Thanks so much!

    Mackenzie...Hi! Got a couple of questions for you. I'm a 74 year old male, who took up hurdling a few years ago, and have competed once, in a Masters meet. 100m, at a 30" height.
    Didn't care about speed or time, just wanted to see if I could do 10 hurdles in rhythm without falling. I did it, but oh so slow (lol). I was sixty-something then, now at my older age they put me in an 80m distance, 8 hurdles at 30". The problem is, the hurdles are 7m between each, instead of 8.5. Which means I've gone from 6 steps between to 4. Having a hard time...I could do three but my legs run out of steam after that, trying to maintain that 4-step rhythm. Is this simply an issue of leg strength? What drills can I do to build strength/explosiveness? I like my right leg as lead leg throughout the distance. Should I work on a 5-step rhythm, meaning I'll be alternating the lead leg? Aiming for a meet in June, so an ASAP answer would be appreciated. Thanks!

    I am in high school and my coach recommended I try hurdles, Ive been practicing but an issue I have is if the first hurdle is set to boys 110m height, my body just stops me before I go over it. I know I can because Ive tried setting the first hurdle at the boys 400 height and then the rest at the 110 height and I can make it over those just fine, but its always the first one. Do you have any tips for something like that?

    I have a weird question, but I am in middle school and when I am working on lets say keeping my arms in I tend to get the other things wrong like staying low even though I just got it down I am so confused as to why I am doing this? I also alternate my legs in-between and then I will get like 4 hurdles away from the finish line and stutter step really badly I have no idea as to why I am doing it? Any advice, tips, or drills that could help with any of that?

    • @mackenziesullivann
      @mackenziesullivann  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey Karley :) It can be hard to maintain the other things you've learned while focusing on one thing to correct. I have experienced what you're describing. I think the important thing when you're learning one specific correction is to allow yourself to focus solely on that correction. It may compromise other things, but once you get that correction down, you'll be able to focus better on putting everything together. If you're talking about the 55/100m hurdles, one of the things I have found helpful is in practice bringing the hurdles in a little closer together. That will allow you to get a better rhythm and build up to the proper distance without feeling like you have to stutter. I hope this helps!

    Life is in essence a track meet and if you cannot clear the hurdle you are not core forward and will not win in the others will pass you by in life what were the track field meet

    • @mackenziesullivann
      @mackenziesullivann  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't have a whole lot of knowledge on the guys height, but I would say the most important thing is making sure you emphasize your lean into the hurdle. That'll help you move forward rather than up, and it'll get you on the ground faster.

    hey im a sort of beginner hurdler but im very short around 5’1 so I have to take more steps and I feel like I more of jump over the hurdles then glide and I don’t really know what do do with my hands do you have advice for how to stay low and swing arms properly?

    • @mackenziesullivann
      @mackenziesullivann  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! One- don’t get discouraged because of your height! A lot of 100/60 hurdlers are on the shorter side. I would recommend working on flat short speed to get you feeling more confident at building momentum in between the hurdles so it doesn’t feel too far. That will also help the action of hurdling feel like a glide rather than a jump. I also think it is a good idea to break up the action into simpler bits. Focus on your trail leg and your lead leg separately and then combine them together. (I recommend using foam hurdles if you have access- or start will shorter hurdles). And for your arms that’s really something you have to train your mind and discipline yourself with. Focus on your arms when you do hurdle drills so that it becomes muscle memory. What your arms do your legs do. So if you swing your arms too wide and they linger- you will be in the air longer (aka jumping)

    • @mackenziesullivann
      @mackenziesullivann  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think especially in middle school be cautious when you’re first learning hurdles. It can be very challenging to learn and teach in middle school. But my advice to you would be to put lots of focus on the drills I mentioned in this video. It’ll all end up coming together the cleaner those drills get. Good luck!

      @mackenziesullivann  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry to hear that! It can be really hard to get through that mental block after taking a fall. But once you get more comfortable it’ll be easier! I hope your meet went well
