Honda CR250 Full Restoration - Part 11 - Carburetor Rebuild

  • Its been a long wait but I've cleared my feet and I'm back in the game bringing the CR250R back to life. In this weeks long awaited episode I'm dealing with the job of letting the engine breathe properly so carb and exhaust is the name of the game. But first.....
PATREON If you would like to help support the channel you can find my patreon account here / rrcrestoration
So first up was to grab the Carb from the shelf and tear it down to component form, to my amazement the internals were nowhere near as dirty as i would have imagined but life's full of little surprises isn't it?
After it was all taken apart i gave the main body a quick clean in the parts washer so as not to contaminate my ultrasonic cleaner too much, once cleaned the main body joined the rest of the parts in the sonic cleaner for 20mins at 60 degrees Celsius.
while the carb was cleaning i made a start of tearing the airbox apart to get it looking tip top again this included the tedious process of drilling out all the rivets and de-rusting all of the steel parts before re-plating everything to look OEM again.
By this time the carb was all done in the ultrasonic bath and could be removed, dried off and re-assembled which was pretty much the exact opposite of the teardown and then it was onto the exhaust side of things.
so again this was a pretty simple job that ended up delaying me but I'll get to that in a moment. I first took the expansion chamber outside and filled it full of engine cleaner to dissolve all the oil and carbon inside and gave it a good scrub too. while that was doing its thing i stripped down the silencer, muffler for my American viewers ;) so that i could clean it up and re-pack it so the bike will sound exactly as Honda intended. So the casing was vapor blasted and clear coated to protect from staining and the expansion chamber now clean and rubbed down was coated with VHT ( very high temp ) matte black paint as per the original and then i went to grab the wool for re-packing the can and I realized i had ordered nowhere near enough to pack the muffler so that will be done next episode along with a multitude of other jobs.
    Until next time stay safe,
    Enjoy

What a great episode! I disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt my brother's 2007 Kawasaki ZXR1200 carbs two summer's ago in exchange for him letting me borrow it for a few weeks while I was in between motorcycles...... Everyone should pull apart a carb at least once in their life to get some hand's on experience with that "old" tech!

I love carbs, especially old motorcycle carbs that doesn't employ any vaccum driven venturi slider. Just plain old cable-actuated variable venturi

I was amazed how clean the inside of that float bowl was. But when I think about it i'll bet they ran pre-mix in it. And pre-mix here in the states is almost all ethanol-free. At least that I have found on the shelves. thankfully more stations in the area are starting to offer non-ethanol fuel. I use it in all my small engines especially my old ATV's.

Also keep a spill kit handy like for the muffler spill in this video. Wastes should be in labeled containers and for the small quantity you have on hand you may have access to a haz waste community drop off program.

I like the utter reliability of fuel injection these days but there's a lot to be said about running a carb because of the sheer amount of tweeking that you can do to give the engine the characteristics you want that you cant do easily with a fuel injector. pros and cons for each.
