10 years ago, the mere idea of a Kia with a price tag £50,000 would have been unthinkable. Today, Kia is at the sharp end of the electric car revolution and has a queue of buyers who are quite happy to blow a small fortune to get into one of the Korean brand’s products.
The electrification of the car market has turned badge snobbery on its head. Brands like Kia, Hyundai, ŠKODA and MG are giving established names such as Audi and BMW a real run for their money and proving that having a badge that impresses the neighbours won’t necessarily get you the best car.
Join Ginny and Tom as they pitch the Kia EV6 against the Audi Q4 e-tron head to head. With just a few hundred pounds between them in price, it’s a straight fight to discover which is the best electric car. Do you agree with the verdict? Is there a different car you would choose? Let us know in the comments below.

Yep got my GT Line a couple of weeks ago (2 month wait). Very happy with it. Our other car is an Audi A4 Avant (diesel) and that is also a fantastic car for our needs. Getting the EV means we can spare the mileage on the Audi a little, save it for the longer blasts and when we take the doggo out. However having just returned from France with it we kept an eye out for EV charging and we reckon with a bit of planning the Kia could probably have done the same trip. So when we swap out the Audi in a few years a 2nd EV might now be a consideration

EV6 the better overall car all day long, better handling, quicker, 7 yr warranty, V2L, faster charging and when you compare the standard kit, the EV6 gives you much more bang for your buck and the EV6 ace card? Those stunning looks vs the frumpy E-Tron.

Agree and If you want a car that's closer to the more traditional look and size of the Q4 then it's also worth considering the Nero EV. Compare it spec for spec with the Q4 and save yourself a lot of money. (Important for us pensioners who can't' take advantage of the company car tax advantage) Top spec Nero EV is £43k in the UK and other than DC charging speed has just about everything. So no good if you do lot of long trips but fine if you don't

After 10,000 miles, still delighted with my EV6 AWD. EVs are subverting brand snobbery, and in the EV era, Kia are rapidly becoming the new Audi. The Q4 e-Tron wasn't available when I ordered the EV6, but nothing about it makes me wish I'd chosen it. Blander, slower charging - and, when specc'd to the EV6 level - more expensive. In fact, you can get the AWD EV6 for around the same price as a decently-kitted Q4 RWD. EV6 build quality is excellent - I came from a Lexus - with not a single rattle or squeak. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I agree with your conclusions. I was looking at an electric replacement for my Audi A4 Avant diesel (company car). After being disappointed by charging speeds on the Enyaq and frustrated by the inability to test a Mustang Mach-E, I tried the EV6 and was convinced straight away. I had to convince my employer to put it on the list, and then I endured 6 months of "You're replacing your Audi with a Kia??" from colleagues.
However, as soon as it arrived, I knew I had made the right choice. Everyone who sees it loves the look and if they get a ride, they're very impressed. Even my mother in law liked the Remote Parking feature when I sent the car away with her in the backseat 😆.
So I'm with you about becoming brand agnostic in the current era... although I might want a shot of a Genesis GV60 if I get the chance!

The main reason for this is in my opinion, that the KIA EV6 is one of the best cars of this brand. And the Q4 is one of the worst Audis available. There is too much MEB platform visible including poor materials in the doors e.g. An Audi A3 is much more diversified from its platform twin VW Golf for example. The Q4 is not worth its money, the EV6 has a much better price value ratio.

Definitely the right decision. Tried Mach-e whose finish is poor at the price and the drive comes not close. Former BMW M Group head Albert Biermann was the teacher behind a young group of engineer getting a chance to prove what they are able. This is another world with treating humans differently and empower them like at Tesla to take responsibility. So KIA is the new Audi and it outbests even the EQE with double the price with the same features. By the way the unique damper system from ZF Sachs is only used by Mercedes AMG and Maserati and is even better than the air suspension of the EQE, we have a frunk for cables also, intelligent HUD, automatic park function, more room inside, better seating in the back and no shining display in sunlight with these nice fingerprints looking no so cool. And last but not least a better noiseless A/C. Even with rear steering axle the sinking ⭐️ star handles not better on our narrow mountain roads and with the KIA you exactly know where the car goes. It drives like a number smaller sportscar and I go to race trainings every year so I well able to compare different makes. In 54 years I owned a lot of performant cars costing me a fortune for servicing and gas. 😎🤓😜

P.S. At the Golf Club my Kia is besides iPace and other premium brands one of the best looking car. But of course the are more Teslas around, replacing all BMW, Audi or Volkswagen. Did you know that Hyundai Group, Porsche and Rimac-Bugatti work together? So the leading 800 Volts system is not by guess or mistake. It’s no shame to go with the best, and the 🌎 has changed from Motorola and Nokia to iPhone and 🍏 was not known before in the industry. Change comes again when HiPhi, BYD, Aiways, Geele, Polestar, Nio etc. hit the market with outstanding quality products. So we certainly do not ride dead horses…😎😝😂

I had pulled the trigger on a EV6 AWD GTLineS back in November 2021 but when the 3 months delivery date became 12 months I went in search of an alternative - at Fully Charged UK Live 2022 Farnborough saw the GV60 for the first time - same E-GMP platform as the EV6 and Ioniq 5 but Hyundai’s luxury brand and it shows. Everyone I saw who sat in the car exclaimed “Wow”. I placed an order and got a pre-configured fully loaded GV60 RWD Premium in less than 6 weeks.
No gloss black interior - mostly metal fascia and trim with a few plastic silver bits, Nappa leather, fantastic suede headliner and suede interior door panels and leatherette dash and upper door ledges makes for a really luxurious feel. The quality of the rear cabin is the same as the front. Hardly any hard plastic anywhere in the interior even the lower door cards are soft touch! All round laminated glass and noise cancellation, Band & Olufsen Stereo, logo projected puddle lights, projected on road dotted reverse lines, rotating sphere/gear shift- it really is a lovely car. Not directly comparable to the EV6 and Ionic 5 as both of those have bigger boots and are longer. The 4.515m of the GV60 is nice and compact for UK multi-storey car parks but that extra 165mm of the EV6 or even 120mm of the Ioniq 5 makes for more rear cabin space and boot space. If a cavernous boot is not a requirement ( a family of 4 into camping I think would struggle with the GV60) and the styling appeals then a GV60 could be a good choice.
The E-GMP platform in its now many guises is simply brilliant! The Kia/Hyundai group I think have simply got the sub £75K EV market sewn up - with the EV9 and Ionic 7 aren’t nearly all the bases covered now? - just the smaller EVs from them to come to market now.
Great to have this range of choice.

Yeah, the ridiculously low trim levels for standard German cars is a long established trick used to ensure that their depreciation appears too be far better than it is. You end up effectively being forced to add anything up to 10k or even more in extras (and being German, none of those extras comes cheap), but the list price is what is used for calculations on depreciation, not price paid.
And it is truly ridiculous that cruise control isn't standard, seeing as it is basically just adding the switchgear, all the management features are designed in from the start.

The traditional German premium brands are in for a tough fight. After years of dominance the explosive growth of EV throws the rules up in the air. There are new contenders like rivan, and even Tesla (no longer the upstart start-up but still the new rival to the German brands), then you have the strong brands like Kia and Hyundai that see it as an opportunity to leap frog with exciting, new thinking. It appears the German brands such as VW, Audi and BMW, after some interesting ideas such as the original BMW i8 and i3 have retreated into their comfortable spaces where their EVs are conservative and in many cases indistinguishable from their ICE equivalent. It’ll be interesting to see which strategy wins out.

    • @Lifecoach7Ra

Do not forget about pace of innovation the German brands are not able to play that card. Tesla is said to make 3000 improvements per day and not in 10 years. There is a completely different way to work with real people in flat structures and not the old German pyramid style. Koreans have recognized that also a gave young teams and engineers a chance to work with the very best. When Herbert Diess was pointing at the point he had to leave! What Blume can do nobody knows but it´s anyhow too late when BYD, Nio, Aiways and Geely are coming, than it‘s game over. These companies are computer or either battery companies.

@@davidcolin6519 There is a certain trend among the Germans to strictly follow their brand's aesthetic statement. It worked in the past - A BMW should look like a BMW. An Audi should look like an Audi. Doesn't matter what year. In fact, Porsche got into "trouble" when their 911 headlights detracted from the traditional round shape in the 90's.
I remember a Porsche engineer say something like "We make a bit of change, and next year a bit of change, and a bit of change the year after. And then when we go too far we go back a little bit to the past."

      @@johnmcgill3603 I don't think so.
I understand very well that a company creates a "Look", a family resemblance. But it seems to me that VAG group cars look too similar, no significant differentiation between any of them. Plenty of car groups are able to maintain the same family resemblance while being able to differentiate between models.
I just think that VAG are spreading their resources way too thin. It seems to me that the same designers work on every single range. In the past, Skoda had its own image, as did SEAT and VW. Now they've added the Cupra brand but haven't differentiated anything, just added copper highlights.
And the interiors are all generic black, no matter that it's a lowly Skoda or a premium Audi, the colour palette is exactly the same.
German interiors were always thus, but when you are being made to look staid by spectacular interiors from newcomers, just continuing on with those ghastly black interiors stops looking clever, it starts looking boring
At least Hyundai KIA offer some distinctively different interiors; light and airy in the Ioniq 5, dark colours in the EV6, but there are actual colours in the EV6, even if they're all dark
Conservatism has always been the German way. However, the Beetle nearly broke VAG because they couldn't break away from their own image.
It seems to me that VAG (and, for that matter BMW and M-B) might be about to commit the sins of the past.

I agree with your assessment. Inside Audis are really good. But Kia and sister brand Hyundai have stolen a march on the premium German brands. Both have their loyal following but I think the Koreans are gaining more new customers with their innovations and offerings. I am one such convert having ordered an electric from Hyundai. In my day job I drive different cars from all manufacturers and a mix of ICE and electric vehicles. Older Kias and Hyundais seem to wear better than their German counterparts of similar age. I also find that the Skoda and Audi versions of the ID4 are much better than the Volkswagen.

I'm keeping my A4, EV6 is second car. I still love the A4, it handles way better than any dad wagon estate has a right to, the spec I got has nearly all the toys and it munches motorway miles in comfort. But if you test drive the EV6 you'll want one. If you appreciate the Audi qualities, getting into the Kia you'll appreciate the quality touches they do, in their own way. Not quite as dynamic, not quite the same fit and finish and ergonomics as the Audi but its damn close where it doesn't quite match and in places is better (the driver assists on the Kia are better handled that on the Audi). It feels a bit like when I went from BMW to Audi, its different because its unfamiliar after years in one manufacturer's idea of controls and interior but once you're used to it you can see the quality. And that's the feeling I got with the Kia - it was unfamiliar but it felt like going from BMW to Audi rather than German Brand to Dacia or something. EV6 (and Ioniq5) are damn fine cars, that also happen to be EVs. If I compare to the older EVs like the Leaf, the iPace, the i3 this new generation are a jump ahead. I'd even risk the Tesla fanboy rage and say I preferred this over the model 3 (altho the Y is perhaps still a step ahead).

I test drove the Q4 eTron literally yesterday. It was the premiere trim with a sticker price of over $63k. I must say I was a bit disappointed with the amount of hard plastic in the interior, including the vast amounts of piano black. In addition, many of the cameras (including the front one) were missing due to the parts shortage and as a result there was no bird’s eye view available. Having owned a Tesla Model 3 and currently driving a Volvo C40 Recharge (both less expensive in the US than the eTron), I would select either one of those over the Audi any day of the week

@@TheMaximBond I owned a Tesla Model 3 Performance for 2 years. The backstory is I was sideswiped by another driver and my Model 3 was totaled. I had pre-ordered another one but the wait was long. I test drove the XC40, the C40 and the Polestar 2 on a whim and ended up loving the C40 so cancelled the Tesla order and bought it. Have had it since May. Where the C40 wins is refinement, materials, ride, comfort, quietness and utility. It’s perfect for me. Where I miss the Tesla is the crazy acceleration, the quality of the sound system, the software (definitely the software) as well as the superior charging infrastructure. That said, I find it easier to be emotionally attached to the C40. It has more personality - less like a sleek computer. If you are in the market (not being sure if this will be your first EV), I’d say test drive the Tesla Model Y, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 (and Kia EV6), the Ford Mach E and the VW ID.4 along with the Volvo/Polestar cars. Where the Model Y wins is software and the charging network. Plus if you love tech, Tesla is your next car. The other models all bring their own charm and somewhat higher levels of build quality and refinement. At the end of the day, it depends on what’s most important to you. I hope this helps. I think it is a no brainer, the Kia EV6 is just next generation compared to "Phat" Audi ETron, as Nyland calls him.
What I find sick is the pricing today. If you take the EV6 and choose the GT Line design (not the GT, mind you), you get 228hp and when speccing it with all that is really necessary like heat pump, you end up north of 62000€. I find that crazy for the performance.
When I looked at it in December 2021 (and it came in second place on my list of choice, very very close to the Model 3 LR), it was still substantially less expensive than the Model 3 LR (here in CZ that was already at 1.5 Mio CZK or 60,000€, now even more due to weak Euro). Now it is more expensive...

I loved the EV6 Wind. I loved the Q4 just as much. I ended up with the Audi. Kia was way too proud of their car and wanted $10k more for the car than Audi wanted. Yes, the Kia is faster 0-60 by about a second, but that means more tire wear, and the tires on these things are expensive. About $250 each. We’ve all seen the articles claiming poor tire life on these things. Well, faster isn’t always better and the Audi is more than fast enough. I’ve verified the 5.5 second 0-60 in the Q4 many times 😊. More than adequate.
FYI I leased the vehicle with plans to buy it in 2 years. Calculated cost of the vehicle when I compared the price of both cars is LEASE PMT x MONTHS plus DOWN PMT plus RESIDUAL. Neither vehicle qualifies for the Fed tax credits but both manufacturers are offering competitive incentives against vehicles that do qualify. Both vehicles qualified for the Colorado tax credit, which is conveniently given at Point of Sale. My calculated overall price of the Audi is under $50k. Now, the biggest difference is in upfront price. The Audi lease is almost $200 per month less with the same down payment (due at signing). That’s a big deal because if I don’t keep the vehicle the Audi will cost me about $4000 less, and I think both residuals are inflated which would mean cost to keep the car is even less. (Learn to negotiate the residual at the end of the lease. Yes, you can do that.)
I’ll also add Audi provides a Lvl 1 mobile charger and Lvl 2 wall charger at no additional cost. Kia wanted $600 more to walk out with a charger.
One other thing. The Q4 has about 3/4” more clearance under the vehicle. That’s a big deal in an area with pot holes, high curbs, and snow.

Kia now makes the better car, but Audi still has more status. And status is still extremely important for a lot of people. It takes a long time for a brand to reach that status, Volvo is an example of a brand that is slowly getting to the level of the germans. But Volve always had a sort of semi luxurious aura, it's far more difficult to change the brand of a car that used to have a cheap image to that of a luxury status car. That's why it is perhaps the smartest strategy to just launch a new brand like Volvo/Geely did with Polestar as its far more easier to reflect a certain image when you start from scratch.

Audis ,Vorsprung durch Technik‘ is melting down below zero compared to the 800 Volt E-GMP platform. Here only Porsche Taycan or a Audi GT e-tron (also from Porsche) got a little Mate Rimac aka Bugatti-Rimac. Here also the Hyundai Group is on board and one of the best with 30 years as head of BMW M Sports Albert Biermann was responsible for fine tuning and roadability. The EV6 therefore also has a better ride than an EQE with air suspension thanks to a unique mechanical damper system up to now only found on Mercedes AMG and Maserati. All this shows the serious ambition of the Korean automaker to become a serious and not only half hearted and double tongued EV manufacturer. Kia is however the new Audi at a price that is with all packs included still more than 30% cheaper, you get more attention and definitely more value for money. We drive an AWD on Swiss roads with highways limited to 120 km/h with between 14.8 and 16.8 kWh and the trick is a soft acceleration pedal as well as foresight. Since May 2022 we average over 4000 km with 15,7 kWh and the car is 2200 kg and less than comparable Audi. The recuperation is near perfect and adds really. The car is very roomy and elegant, a modern GT and not another boring SUV of anybody. And after German P3/ADAC it’s the first brand to get an index over 1 (1,03) for long distance traveling. Next best after the winner in all classes is the EQS with 0,92 and Polestar 2 as well as 😜 Porsche Taycan both 0,90. This is definitely a new generation of car that can seriously compete with the leader TESLA. Legacy has no chance with actual structures and Hyundai Group was among the first to take the warning seriously, not so the Germans still fixed on ICE for purely Autobahn conditions found nowhere globally. There is nothing anymore to say and best YOU objectively check out yourself, even friends at the golf club will not find that you are at the wrong place. It fits well besides Teslas!😎😜

We’ve had 6 Audis over 20 yrs - we test drove the Q4 Sport and sat in the S-line - just hated the interior - just a big slab of plastic and the piano black was horrendous for reflections. EV6 on order ( yes it has been 8 months #notcountin gokyesiamcounting)
