Audi Q4 e-tron: Another worthy electric car contender

  • The Audi Q4 e-tron is the German brand's most affordable electric car so far, and shares its MEB platform with the VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq. This pure-electric mid-size family SUV is available with 52kWh or 77kWh batteries to give claimed ranges of between 208 and 316 miles respectively. In this CarGurus UK video, Vicky Parrot tests what we rate as the pick of the range: the Q4 e-tron 40 with rear-wheel drive, the larger battery, 201bhp, and 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds.

    Pros
    Plush cabin is packed with tech
    Capable of charging at 100kW or 125kW, depending on the model
    Roomy enough for a family of four
    Cons
    A Skoda Enyaq has a longer range for a lot less cash
    Irritating touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel
    Doesn't really stand out from a crowded field of rivals

    I prefer cables being stored in the front. Storing them under the floor of the boot is awkward if you have anything in your boot.

    • @Brian-om2hh
      @Brian-om2hh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Failing the option of a front boot, I think if I were to undertake a longish trip I'd put the cables on top of the stuff in the boot. It follows that if you were going to tackle a long trip, you'd be stopping at some point to charge anyway, so you'd want them easily accessible.......

    Picked up my Q4 40 S Line on Tuesday 😀 Awesome car, bigger inside than my old Q5. Its smooth, quiet, and is just like a normal Audi. I like the traditional cabin. You journalists bang on about the touch sensitive wheel controls.....looking for faults I feel, they have a click to them, not just touch. I dont find I hit them. Guess you should hold the wheel correctly at 10 to 2, not 15 to 3 !

    I'd love to get this but a mid level Q4 is 65/67k Canadian and therefore doesn't get a gov't rebate. Go for a VW ID4 AWD loaded and it's 58k minus 5k dollar gov't rebate. ie 12-14k less.

    Looks like Audi has a winner EV for the masses finally. The design is nice but nothing stunning and its just a little too much like all the other Audis in the world. I think the steering wheel is cool, distinctive without losing its function. I do wish the industry would rethink all this touch-sensitive controls and get back to basics with traditional knobs and buttons where they are most needed. I would still look into the Ionic 5 as my first choice in this segment and I think it would actually be more affordable when you consider incentives.

    I’ve just ordered a 40 S-Line. My reason will surprise you - as a company car driver, for me the Audi is about 10% cheaper to lease than the equivalent Enyaq 80 and the same price as an ID4, despite being £8K more on list price. I wouldn’t buy one if it was my own money but it’s a no-brainier with the deal I’m getting. I tried all three and tbh the Audi was the most refined and is big enough as a family car. The Enyaq is bigger but I just don’t like the huge central touchscreen controls for everything - just not easy to use. Now waiting to find out how long the wait is for delivery …………

    Touch sensitive steering wheel controls are a practical design failure, I have enough problems with my Push button ones. Makes you wonder who specifies them at R&D stage. Same goes for touch sensitive screens, do the designers actually drive cars in the real world? £45k, wow, the general public need a huge pay increase to get on board with EV cars for the masses. This is a very good car, if you can find one! - I had one on order in the UK (to replace a Q5) but cancelled it when the delays increased due to chip shortages etc, and was told that I might get one in 9-12 months! Bought a Tesla Model 3 long range instead (waited 2 months) and dont miss the SUV at all. In addition many of the extras on the Q4 (glass roof, reversing camera, electric seats, matrix headlights, etc etc) come as standard on the Tesla. If you really want an SUV, the Tesla Model Y is coming next year.

      @@GC-rv2vp I'm sure the Model 3 was a good purchase for you, but my numerous gripes about Tesla extend beyond my Model S. For instance, I also buy & operate agricultural machinery, and I've learnt from many years of bitter experience that the quality of after-sales support can be almost as important as the quality of the product itself. I have to go 65 miles to Bristol to get my Tesla serviced and repaired - which I knew when I bought it - but the support from Tesla has been lamentable. My nearest Audi & BMW dealers are only 9 miles away (in Yeovil), and, having also owned an i3 since 2018 I can vouch for the professionalism of the BMW dealership. I just hope you have better luck with Tesla than I've had.

    I've seen a number of Vicky's videos where she disses the haptic steering wheel buttons on VAG cars. I have an ID.4 with haptic steering wheel buttons and have never had an issue with them (nor my wife). I find them clear and easy to use. So I watched how Vicky drives and think the reason why she dislikes them so much is she drives with her hands at quarter past three and with the heels of her hands resting on the spokes, not gripping the wheel. I drive with my hands at ten to two and gently grip the wheel. This is not a criticism of Vicky's driving so much as an observation, having her hands where she does makes accidently knocking the haptic buttons a real possibility and this would be annoying.
    The prejudice against the haptic buttons is not something I see on the owners forums and Facebook groups I belong to, so not sure it is a real issue. However, as owners we may be biased :-)
    One other thing, you mentioned you were not impressed with the MEB efficiency in the into and 'would have to see how the Audi does' - but failed to mention efficiency or consumption in the body of the video. Maybe I missed it?

    • @johndean4998
      @johndean4998 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I test drove an ID.4 a few days ago (and will be trying out the Q4 e-tron shortly), and, like you, had no problems at all with the steering wheel buttons. This may partly be due to my old-school style of driving in which I prefer to grip the wheel gently at ten-to-two and feed the wheel through my hands whilst turning - therefore, if I go for the Audi I will probably choose the circular steering wheel, not this fancy squared-off jobby.
      I'm old enough to remember the Austin Allegro which had a similar steering wheel, and the running joke then was that the wheels were squared-off too.

    Doesn't seem fair to compare the EQA without mentioning the price. Here in the US the Q4 can be had for $44,000 USD. The EQA is going to start ~$15,000 USD more - and will have even less power than the RWD Q4 which is probably as low as I'd ever consider. The Q4 is on my shortlist simply because I think it strikes a great balance. It is the most luxurious EV SUV you can get for the money - interior materials, sound proofing, ride comfort. Certainly compared to it's brethren ID4 and Enyaq which have noticeably worse interiors, more noise coming in according to Bjorn's noise tests, and clunky infotainment (Audi's MMI is best in class) -- all to save just 3,000 pounds or so? If all you care about is raw 0-60 performance, get a Tesla and be done with it.

    The Q4 is very disappointing and is not up to Audi's usual standard. The interior plastics are poor quality and there is even painted metal in the cabin. It's moved a long way downmarket from the Audi ICE saloons, standard equipment is absolutely minimal, everything is an extra, you don't even get clamps in the cup holders which makes them useless! Reversing camera is essential and should be fitted as standard and there is only one reversing light. No front parking sensors either, the adjustable boot floor, rear light bar, rear armrest & cup holders and 12V in the back are all extra too. You also need the optional steering wheel with the adjustable recuperation. The touch buttons are a nightmare and the lane assist is dangerous! You will need to add another 30 to 40% to get a reasonable level of equipment.
