    This episode really cooked! The stories are becoming simultaneously more complex and more in focus. The patient world building is really paying off and creating one of the most compelling narratives in a tv show I've seen. I'm full invested at this point!

    All you need is a map of the Solar System. Unfortunately everything is orbiting the sun so there is no 'static' arrangement.

      @ferchrissakes 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      It’s funny how half a century of space sci-fi media has accustomed everyone to think in terms of galaxies and static Middle Earth type maps. Just look at the sky on a clear night. Ok, seeing Ceres takes a telescope, but otherwise you have a better chance of seeing, say, Mars with the naked eye than you have a seeing another country - or even the next city over - on this planet.

    • @wwoods66
      @wwoods66 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      I do wish the books had maps. The outer worlds would be static _enough_ for short periods.
      Make Ceres a fixed point on the map (i.e. ignore the stars). Over the course of one Earth-year, Earth goes 3/4s of an orbit counter-clockwise, Mars goes 1/3, Jupiter goes 1/8 clockwise, and Saturn goes 1/5. You could mark the starting points, with arcs showing how their positions change over the length of a book.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@ferchrissakes Galaxies might as well be fixed over the time periods stories are likely to take place in in science fiction, unless those stories span tens or hundreds of millions of years. I can think of some science fiction sagas that take place over thousands of years, but not any longer than that, not long enough for the stars to significantly move in relation to each other. Solar systems of course change quite a bit on much more human timescales. Months can make a big difference. Just days or hours, when it comes to moons.

    Somebody already said that the nephew Diogo is the kid that Miller busted for stealing water on Ceres. He is less recognisable in his space gear and with a slightly different haircut, but uncle Matteo does mention sending him back to his old "job". One thing that is definitely unclear due to the pace and the rapidly changing angles is the outcome of the kamikaze rock flinging. I don't think the Scipio Africanus is destroyed - only dented - by the rocks. They get a missile off and the ship we see explode in Diogo's visor reflection is his Uncle's ship.

    What this show does REALLY well is despite its insane plot pace, it allows the characters to come up for air with 'downtime' for the audience to get to know them and get invested in them. Little things, like Miller taking time to shower in Julie's appartment, like his coversation with Octavia about having killed someone on the job, like Jim loving to have the coffee on the Roci, like Amos and Alex going to the bar and Alex sharing why he is no longer married. There's many small moments like that, they REALLY make the character feel alive and this show does it so well!

    Just a nomenclature check:
    A sun (star) with its family of planets is a "solar system." When capitalized, the term refers to our Solar System.
    A "galaxy" is a collection of solar systems orbiting a huge gravity well at the center -- almost always a Black Hole.
    The "Milky Way Galaxy" is our galaxy, the home of our Solar System.
    Our Solar System is one of 100 *billion* to 400 *billion* star systems in the Milky Way Galaxy alone (although the actual number is probably on the lower end of that range).
    Every star we can see with a normal telescope lies within 1,500 light years of our Solar System -- a sphere 3,000 light years in diameter.
    The Milky Way Galaxy is 100,000 light years in diameter -- so every star we can see with normal telescopes lies within barely three percent of that distance -- and the sphere is a *tiny fraction* of the Milky Way's total volume.

    2:48 - yes, there is a map of places where we can go. It is called Solar system. We are not moving across the galaxy, as in Star Trek or Star Wars etc. So check it out, everything in season 1 happens there.. :) Also it is in constant movement, so for some time belter's stations on Ceres, Tycho etc. are closer to Earth, but for some time closer to Mars. If you are on the edge of war, it certainly is interesting when distances and times to transit shrink and expands...

    This is a wonderland story structure. You go in the rabbit hole and where you end up is just the beginning.
    The writing is brilliant because they are chewing on the details, and that is great world building. It is that situation where you have a creative thought about an alternate universe, and you fuss about an individual living in it.

  • @evanadcock387

    It's not too important but to set the record straight on terminology - humanity is only spread as far as our solar system (or just "system" for short) and you keep saying galaxy. You know about the Mormons building the Nauvoo in the show, intended to be a generation ship to travel to a different star system. If they are successful THEN you can say humans have spread through the galaxy.
    Might seem like a pointless distinction but it's important for sense of scale - the Expanse presents a plausible future given our real-life current technical capabilities (aside from their propulsion systems being way improved to what we currently have). Space is big, like REALLY big. Most of the points of light in the sky that we can see with our eyes are other stars in the Milky Way galaxy.

    Would love to tour the Rocinante. It's a state of the art vessel. They have coffee! The way that ships are configured is also part of the real science here. Since thrust and constant acceleration provide simulated gravity, ships are built like office towers. So when you see a ship flying forward, the top of everyone's head is pointed forward. Diogo is the kid that was stealing water earlier. Anderson Dawes tale of his sister was so moving. Such a great performance by Harris. The chip that Fred took from Lopez's suit was the one that the Donnenger's captain gave him with all the sensor data from the battle with the unknown crafts. Hilarious reaction of you saying you wouldn't mind seeing the siblings again. The Rocinante logo is a bit like the bomber girls on WWII aircraft. The spy is the one that Avasarala wrangled from the dude at the aquarium. And the Martian patrol ship survived the rocks being thrown at it and fired a torpedo to take out the uncle. The Martian are a very militaristic people. So they bully a lot of people feeling their own power over the Belters. It's great that we have a new mission. Let's go!

    It didn't make your edit, but that scene in the Bar/Brothel is a great bit of character development for Amos. Up to that point, I took him as the trope of the braindead muscle, like Jayne from firefly etc, but in this episode the layers of the onion start to be pealed. Fabulous writing of characters.
    BTW did you recognise the nephew..... You've seen him before :P
    The Mars ship unfortunately didn't get taken out, it got hit, but then fired off a missile, and you see Mateo's ship explode reflected in Diogo's helmet visor.

    Please learn what a galaxy is.
    We're in the Solar System. If we would draw a map of the galaxy, no matter how big we draw it, the whole Solar System would be less than a pixel in size.
    Also, everything so far is actually happening in a pretty small part of the Solar System, mostly between the orbits of Earth and the Asteroid Belt. That's actually a huge area, but also it's way less than 1 % of the size of our system.
    The (Milkyway) galaxy however is about 6-10 million times larger than the whole Solar System.

      @@CasualNerdReactions I had a good friend who went to elementary school with me and went on to the U.S. Naval Academy. We kept in touch over the years and had some good convesations about the classes he took at the academy, the rules of warfare, and the vital importance of avoiding civilian casualties. Accordingly, my default undestanding of a Marine Colonel prior to seeing the Anderson Station flashbacks was that he would never order the slaughter of hundreds of civilians, and I watched the flashbacks waiting patiently for some visual evidence that Col. Johnson deserved to be labeled "The Butcher of Anderson Station". I saw absolutely nothing to indicate he played any role whatsoever in the decision to, or in the act of, killing all those workers and their families. If anything, what i did see, which was Johnson standing at the ship's dock in space gear holding an assualt rifle, indicated, to me, that he was about to lead a boarding party to Anderson Station. The show could have showed Col. Johnson on the bridge giving a "fire" command to a missile battery, but didn't. That's the job of a naval weapons officer , not a Marine trained for infantry combat. I was never swayed from my default position that Johnson was an honorable man who seems to have been scapegoated for something he did not do.
