Original Series: The Expanse (2015)
14:45 “I think Amos might be a little bit crazy, y’know. Like in a actual unpredictable way”
Amos is _perfectly_ predictable, you just have to think like him. And if you can do that, god help you.
100%. you have to keep in mind that Amos views every person as as either 1) Bad/someone you kill 2) someone you protect 3) someone you follow. He follows naomi, he protects Alex and he's still trying to place holden...
@@Braincleaner I know our guy is way ahead, but you still don't need to post spoiler material. Small chance that people are watching who are not as far ahead.
Love this episode. Casting Frances Fisher as Holden’s mom was absolutely genius. Watching her and Shohreh Aghdashloo sparring was epic. The casting in The Expanse in general is awesome. #DonkeyBalls 😁
Havelock moved to Hawaii and became a private investigator...... :D. (actor got the lead role in the Magnum PI reboot)
Even though I would have liked to see more of the character, with how realistic the show keeps, it kinda fits. Cause in real life, people come & go & sometimes that will be the end of it, in the sense, we wont get to know them more or have contact, so fitting for me atleast :)
Holden sees himself as knight who grew up being prepared to fight a battle that could never be won (tilting at windmills) While his mom got him to leave, that mindset is still with him. He’s looking for his fight/cause.
It's why he joined the military, because he thought that would give him that purpose, but it obviously didn't work out super well once he realized what it was really like
We are told little Jim thought "Don Quixote" was a funny story. People still are confused by "The Man From LaMancha", which took a goofy story about a senile old fool who actually believed a beautiful young woman would love him and completely transformed it into the idea of fighting for a noble cause. From what we've seen so far, Holden is a guy who quit the UN Navy and went and hid on an ice freighter in The Belt for years, and who was so adverse to leadership that he tureed down the XO position when offered. Don Quixote's brain was reduced to mush and he was incapable of distinguishing fact from fantasy. I think that Holden is better viewed as being a very capable naval officer who was unsuccesful in his attempt to avoid being thrust into a position of leadership, but once serendipitously placed there, shows he's an honorable man.
Elias Toufexis, the actor who played Kenzo, the spy with the eye, did a cameo for another reactor, "Funny Lil Gal," and told how he had originally auditioned for Amos. He clearly didn't get the part, but they liked him enough to create the character of Kenzo. He said that normally, he might harbor some resentment and animosity for the other actor who got the role he wanted, but as soon as he saw Wes Chatham, and how he played the role, he knew that they made the right choice. Wes *IS* Amos Burton.
✌️
There are loads of references in The Expanse. Scopuli was the name of the island in Greek mythology where the Sirens lived...
The references are deep: in history, mythology, literature, science, other sci-fi, and The Simpsons
This episode is most ubiquitous, mendacious, and polyglottal.
With some donkeyballs.
oh, donkey balls
Donkey balls.
With a side of donkey balls.
Well, I mean, and donkeyballs.
Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying your The Expanse reactions - when you wonder about something or work through something out loud it sometimes adds more to my understanding of the show. I've re-watched TE twice but there are many layers and I appreciate your insights. Thank you.
Since it is a complete change of foundation, and I cant really "spoil" it, I'll save you the trouble of obsessing about it at all:
Havelock vanishes from the story until Book 4, in a completely different job and circumstance, but it isn't actually put into the show.. One of the cases where the authors, working in the show writers' room made some character changes. It is done multiple times in the 6 seasons.. One major character in season 3, 5, 6 is actually a fusion of the smaller characters to create a new one that became a fan favorite.
This show has forever changed how I view the stars. Anytime I hear the name Eros, a shiver now runs down my spine.
We’re getting set to make a hard turn from de Cervantes… straight into H.P. Lovecraft.
The team-up we never knew we needed but are Here for!
Amos isn't lacking motivation. He recognizes the rage which has been ignited deep within himself, and is considering how to respond.
I came down to the comments for Don Quixote answers and realised I'm way too early for this
Same, I expected many comments about "Rocinante", but... Not yet! :)
Yes. Rocinante, Dulcinea, The Knight, Windmills...
The question I always wonder is if Jim is Don Quixote then who is Sancho Panza? Is it one or all of the Roci crew, or Miller?
@@PaulMDove2I mean, Sancho knew that the Don was crazy--but he followed him anyway.
@@PaulMDove2 better yet, who is the Knight of the White Moon? And how does the 4th wall get broken by the Jim knowing his story was illegally copied and thus altering his own story to make the real story different from the illegal copy and upset the other writer?
Holden is an idealist in a world full of grey morality....
Top three for me in this episode:
3: Avasarala trading barbs with Holdens Mom
2: Amos and Holdens interactions when it looked like Holden might have to shoot him
1: Donkeyballs.
Donkey balls!!
Great reaction and analysis!
Love the interactions between Chrisjen and Holden's mom. Also the dynamic on the Rocinante!!
Looking forward to the next one!
Most reviewers don't catch the names Dulcinea or Rosinante as coming from Cervantes - you are well ahead of the pack.
Of course, the most obvious, is the name of their ship.
Here's a question for you--how did _Amos_ know what Rocinante means?
(This is a rhetorical question, not for those in the know.)
LOve this episode. Lots of great character interaction. Amos is great here and Chrisjen is great talking to our guest star Frances Fisher as Holden's mom. There's a great BTS story for this episode with Frances FIsher and one of the creators and writers of the Expanse, Ty Franck. th-cam.com/video/xH97VJy6ThA/w-d-xo.html
I believe you mean Miller is on their way to Eros, And may meet up with the Rossi, Holden is already on the ship. 😄👍
🤣🤣 most certainly I do. Why do I mix up their names so often? Haha
@CasualNerdReactions Maybe it's because of their first names, Jim & Joe, that you were using to start with instead of Holden & Miller their surnames 🤔❤
Not to spoil anything, but it is worth pointing out that (as I'm sure you know the show tracks the books at least as far as start/end points) the first book doesn't end until half way through season 2 (then the second book ends half way through s3, and from then on they match seasons so b3 ends at the end of s3). The end of the season is pretty huyp though.
13:08 Amos will reveal his backstory, even further along than you are on Patreon LOL... Amos is not a psycho nor is he really amoral. He recognizes other people have lots of moral or ethical codes and needs like Jim does. He just has a few minor needs in life: eat, drink, f*@k, work to pay for those three and remain free to do so. Threaten that freedom and there will be violence if he has a weapon. He doesn't kill Holden bc the MCRN is the greater threat to his freedom. All Holden can do is kill him. He is not afraid of dying to stay free.
Love The Expanse and every time a new reactor discovers how good it is, I get to vicariously relive watching it for the first time.
Screaming firehawk and Donkey balls, I want more.
Spoliers beyond....
I don't quite remember but i think in season 3, I love the growth in the relationship between Holden and Amos when he puts the news woman and the camera guy out the airlock and Holden just goes "wish you'd asked me first" and then says "it's alright" when Amos apologised for doing it. Such a clear point to show how their understanding and trust of and in oneanother has deepened.
Minor book spoiler. Havlock (Miller’s partner) is in the 4th book. The actor got a different role so wasn’t able to come back for it.
What is it with all the censoring? Really??
Amos is a psychopath, who knows he’s a psychopath. He’s primarily concerned with keeping himself alive, and smart enough to know that that requires cooperating with people who also want to keep him alive, which means making himself useful to them, and not doing things that will piss those people off, too much. He knows that his moral compass is broken, as far as most of the rest of the population is concerned, so he delegates moral decisions to Naomi, because he recognizes that her moral compass is well aligned.
Yes!! I don’t know if it was episode 8 or 9 in the second season, but I commented on how amazing his understanding of the team dynamics and his roles in them is. He is. Wry aware and seemingly becoming more so all the time.
I don't think that is quite a correct assessment of Amos. Future episodes will show that. Not going to spoil with details.
