There was talk of a remake and Cary Elwes tweeted in response 'There's a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one.'"
"fun" fact about the line "i want my father back, you son of a bitch": Mandy had just lost his father to cancer before filming began, and he's said that line was him talking to the cancer that killed his father
Mandy was channeling the death of his real father to pancreatic cancer in that final battle scene It was a therapeutic release of the grief and anger he had carried with him since the tragic loss.
The thing that makes that first sword fight so impressive is that aside from the high bar thing, Cary and Mandy did all of it. They were both determined to not use stunt doubles and trained their asses off. The different fencing terms are real and they are performing them in real time. Bob Sanderson, the legendary sword fight coordinator who also worked on The Lord of the Rings films did this movie as well
Bob Anderson. Darth Vader's stunt double and Olympic fencer. He also choreographed Zorro, Highlander, Pirates of the Carribbean (Black Pearl), several James Bond films, and tons more. Bob Anderson was the GOAT cinematic fight choreographer. He said in this movie, that Patinkin and Elwes had to be curtailed several times as they would take every lunch break to rehearse this scene, and would fight 'hammer and tongs' until he feared for their safety. Check out the book "By the Sword: A History of Gladiators, Musketeers, Samurai, Swashbucklers, and Olympic Champions" if you're interested in that sort of thing. Great book.
Fun fact about the hill stunt: it was a single stuntman. So he dressed as Wesley, threw himself down the hill...then went back up, dressed as Buttercup and threw himself down a second time. That's why you never see both falling in the same shot.
So Peter Falk doing that little searching thing was his Homage to his character columbo. Columba was always doing that in every episode searching every pocket for something. On another note, this movie is one of the most quoted movies and I use a lot of these quotes, especially have fun storming the castle I say it to my kids every time they leave the house
One of the most universally beloved films of all time. A ton of Hollywood actors recreated it during the pandemic and while they were parodying it a little you could see them turn into children again, that each and every one had memorised every line of the film long ago (highlights include Rainn Wilson, Jack Black, Pedro Pascal, Bryan Cranston and Paul Rudd). Also I live near the Peak District where a lot of it was filmed, so I'm always reminded of it.
This is one of the few movies I feel completely secure in calling "perfect." I still remember seeing it in the theater when it first came out and how the entire audience starting cheering at the line "I want my father back, you son of a bitch!" And I respectfully disagree about remaking it, it should never be touched. No remake could ever approach the magic of the original.
You guys need to watch the lockdown version. It's a star-studded affair and delightfully rubbish in all the right ways but done with the upmost respect.
Now, now, Jay has nothing to apologize for... By the way Jay, we're putting together a focus group for feedback on our new invention, "The Machine". We'd wonder if you'd drop by our, er, basement lab and give it a try.
I love seeing how Adam keeps glancing over at Jay to watch his reactions. Buttercup's parents were in the book as the ones who owned the farm, but they got cut out of the movie. They were present at the very beginning, but they died during the time skip, so they didn't really figure into the main story. The story behing the sword fight scene is amazing. William Goldman described it as "the greatest swordfight in modern times" and the movie makers had to figure out how to show that on screen. They got Bob Anderson and Peter Diamond to choreograph the fight and train the actors (Bob Anderson is responsible for the lightsaber battles in Star Wars as well as the swordfighting in Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and both men worked on various parts of the Zorro franchise). Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin really did learn how to fence both left- and right-handed. They started training at the very beginning of production, and the sword fight was one of the very last scenes they filmed in order to get as much preparation in as possible. They studied classic swashbuckling movies to get ideas for how to enhance the scene, and they kept adding to it and refining it as they went. When Buttercup falls into the quicksand they had a trapdoor for her to fall through. Cary Elwes was originally supposed to jump in feet-first, but he felt like that wasn't heroic enough, so he asked permission from the stunt coordinators to dive in head-first. They were very cautious about it, but after testing it out with the stunt double they allowed Cary to dive in himself.
When I saw Mandy Patinkin in concert, at the end he stood in his sword-fighting stance and the crowd went bonkers in anticipation. Then he delivered THE LINE. 🙌 A phenomenal artist and entertainer.
I may be 16, but this is one of my favorite movies ever, I grew up watching this so many times when I was little. I’m so glad that my favorite reaction channel watched this absolute banger classic. I was even named after this movie, I kind of have to love this film.
43:48 A sad bit of trivia. Andre the Giant died about 6 years after this movies was released, but already by this point he had developed such severe back problems that he couldn't even hold Robin Wright up during this scene. They had to have her on wires.

There was a remake done by famous actors/celebs during Covid lockdowns. All self shot iPhone/handheld by the celebs and edited together. Cary Elwes was in it. It’s awesome. Home Movie: The Princess Bride 2020
The scene at the end with Mandy Patinkin when he says "I want my father back you son of a bi***" was actually his emotional response to the loss of his own father. His father had terminal cancer and had only just recently passed away before the filming (Edit: Died when he was 18, my bad). His father wanted him to complete the film and encouraged him to continue. So when he said that line it was directed at the cancer that stole his father from him. He did a small tik-tok response clip to a young lady who asked him about this line and he told the story and was very emotional about the meaning of this scene to him. This is one of my most very favorite movies.
Indeed. I've also seen this as an example of an interesting revenge story. It flips "nothing will bring them back so there's no point in killing you" to "nothing will bring them back *so there's nothing that can save you*"
My favorite part of this was Adams gleeful side eye every time something iconic was happening. Really captured how I feel showing my friends things I love.

FYI, they did remake this movie....kinda. During Covid, A nd B list movie stars re-made this making it chessy for youtube. Pedro Pascal was Inigo Montoya.
I was able to see this at an event with Cary Elwes this year. A theater full of fans of this movie and then getting to hear Cary talk all about this movie and the behind the scenes was amazing.
So when my cousin got married, his older brother got ordained so he could officiate - and older bro opens with “MAWWIAGE. Mawwiage is waat bwings us togewwer. Today.”
As a child, I must have watched this film 100 times, no exaggeration. They had a copy at my local library ands you could check it out a week at a time. I’d watch it every day, sometimes twice. And we would check that VHS out any time there wasn’t a new tape we hadn’t seen. I had the movie memorized, start to finish, including inflection, sound effects, etc. It is a real gem. It’s truly outrageous.
When I was in theater school, this was one of 2 movies shown in Film class that my teacher labeled "The Perfect Film". From acting to cinematography to writing to soundtrack and editing.... Everything works together to make the film special. If any one of those pieces were missing it would not be as timeless as it is. Glad you liked it Jay. Make sure kiddo sees it early and often and maybe they can defend you with swords later on in life or at least avenge you. (Oh and the other film she showed us was "Galaxy Quest")
Although i guess this was supposed to be about watching Jay's first watch reaction, I actually found it more enjoyable seeing Adam's reaction! Adam's face mirrored my glee and mirth at all the same points. Who says Adam doesn't like a bit of whimsy?!?!? Thanks guys, this was a real fun one! 🤩
Adam mouthing "I don't think it means what you think it means" (coincidentally at the same time as myself) had me rolling! "Aaaand that's where THAT comes from!" Someone should do a counter of how many times that was said throughout the reaction!
What I just thought of, during the Pit of Despair scene, when Wesley is first taken there, and talking to the henchman. The bit where he clears his throat....I wonder if there is a meta joke there, where Grandpa, telling the story, tried to do a creepy voice for that character, but just couldn't do it, had a coughing fit, and looked at young Fred Savage and was like "ok sorry, i'm just going to do his voice normal." and then went into the normal voice you hear him use for the rest of the scene. 🤣
As Cary Elwes said when there was talk about a remake of this classic, "There's a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one.'" Although the reenactment created online during lockdown was adorable.
This is a warm hug of a movie every time I watch it. Also, showing each other your favorite classic movies is great for the content light times of year. Well, this and Jeopardy.
"Who are you trying to get revenge against? I can't say that in public Jay!" I just about about spit out my drink from that. Brilliant reaction to a wonderful movie. Using the word charming is perfect. Thank you for this, made my morning!
Andre was a very loving individual. At one point, while filming , Robyn was freezing, so Andre put his hand on her head to warm her up. Anothet time he let one rip for a solid minute (legend has it) and afterward the director, Rob Reiner, asked if he was okay and Andre replied "I am now, boss." Great movie
When Jay said, “You know… You could totally remake this movie?” The loaded pause went out across the TH-cam-verse followed by a collective, “NOOOOOO! Sacrilege! Blasphemy!”
I love you guys so much for this. For the Mandy fans out there - I saw him in concert once back in the early 2000's and he was phenomenal, of course. BUT for his second encore, we thought he was going to sing again but instead he ran center stage and performed the "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya" speech and we all lost our minds. It was incredible. He is truly the GOAT!
I LIT up when I saw this title! This is going to be a wonderful way to enjoy my dinner. As a thirty year old who only watched this movie in full a few months ago, I'm so excited for this!
I'm eternally grateful to the teacher who insisted on showing this movie to a bunch of us in the aftercare program at my elementary school. She was always so excited to share movies she loved with us kids. _Ladyhawke_ was another one of her favorites that I don't think I would've ever seen had she not introduced it to us first
This is legitimately my favorite movie of all time. It brings back so many nostalgic memories of watching it with my family, and it's funny and touching as hell.
It’s SOOO obvious! In the remake, it’s Fred Savage telling the story to either his own child or perhaps a niece or nephew. To get devices out of the picture perhaps he tells the story during a thunderstorm with a power outage and dead batteries?
There's a story about André the Giant, I think it's true. Whenever he went out for a meal with people, he would always insist on paying. He was at a meal with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Arnold went to pay first. André physically picked Arnold up, carried him outside, and deposited him on top of his car.
The thing I’ve always loved about Inigo’s fight with Rugan is he wounds him in all the places he previously had wounded him. Even the final blow is in the same place the dagger landed but since his sword is longer he was able to pierce deeper for the kill. Absolute art.
My favorite thing about the book is the framing device. It too treats the story as coming from a beloved classic book -- William Goldman tells the reader he's merely publishing an abridged version, cutting out all the boring bits. I can't find my copy just now, but IIRC in the Author's Note in the edition published after the movie, he talks about modern-day Florin/Guilder relations and the Cliffs of Insanity (countries and a location that OFC don't exist) becoming a tourist trap thanks to the film's popularity. Goldman never breaks character!
One of my favorite behind the scenes stories from any movie is apparently Andre the Giant was feeling a bit sick one day on set, and in between takes let out a 26 second long fart that was so loud it shut down production. Rob Reiner asked him if he was feeling okay, and Andre's response was "I do now, boss."
There was a guy I knew in high school who refused to watch this movie because it had the word "princess" in the titled. He was later expelled for stabbing another student.
My best friend and roommate of 3 years in college refused to watch it for ages for the same reason. Kept thinking it would be like The Princess Diaries. When we finally got him to see it he loved it.
Many people don't know, this movie was actually based on a real book -- which was about a dad reading a fictional book to his son. The best part of the book is the dad discovering all the "editing" that HIS dad did to the original story. I would love to see a remake some day that shows the kid, now as an adult, reading the book to HIS kid and discovering how terrible the REAL story was, and having to re-edit it his OWN way for his own kid. You could have a LOT of fun with that! In any case, I have a ton of fun watching people discover this gem! Glad you enjoyed it, and as always, thank you for the reaction!
Being a D&D player, I feel like The Princess Bride is required viewing so im shocked that Jay jas never seen this movie. Its always fun to watch someone watch this for the first time, especially a D&D player
I love how smoothly Mandy switches hands with his sword after confessing he's not left-handed. Also, it really impresses me that the two actors had to learn to sword fight with left and right hands. I love this movie so much.
My daughter hated Princess-y stuff when she was young and was going in with low expectations but just like Jay, it took care of those expectations in the most charming way.
I always thought that the life sucking machine didn't actually suck life but was producing electricity and they just didn't understand what electricity does.
My thoughts on how a sequel to this movie could work would be this: Fred Savage is now the father and his daughter is sick and it's almost the same exact story. But the daughter likes different scenes than the ones Fred Savage did, so we get the same story but with different parts getting longer takes (and vice-versa) or even just different scenes that may of been in the book but didn't get told in the movie.
There was talk of a remake and Cary Elwes tweeted in response 'There's a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one.'"
I believe the cast also said they wouldn't do it because Andre is dead and the part was always written with him in mind.

Could not agree more. I came here to comment that there are only a few perfect films, Princess Bride and Galaxy Quest are on that list.
Prince Humperdinck actor is also the speaking voice of Jack Skelington.
Holy crap.......how did I not know that
Adam mouthing "I don't think it means what you think it means" (coincidentally at the same time as myself) had me rolling!
I'm not smart, could you explain that part to me? the "I can't say that in public" part
The book is so close to the movie because the screenwriter is also the author of the book
Now i am imagining a reboot of this movie. I can imagine instead of a sick kid there is a power outage and all the devices have run out of batter lol
When Jay said, “You know… You could totally remake this movie?” The loaded pause went out across the TH-cam-verse followed by a collective, “NOOOOOO! Sacrilege! Blasphemy!”
"the pit of despair"
Jay: ::shudders: "Ugh... Poughkeepsie?"
Massive LOL IRL.
I absolutely adore Mandy, I would've died seeing him do Inigo!
I LIT up when I saw this title! This is going to be a wonderful way to enjoy my dinner.
As a thirty year old who only watched this movie in full a few months ago, I'm so excited for this!
Dont you dare say REMAKE this !!! Its perfect and timeless as it is
I'm eternally grateful to the teacher who insisted on showing this movie to a bunch of us in the aftercare program at my elementary school.
Well it looks like Adam has not seen Waiting for Guffman……
I smell another video for the channel
The memes this movie produced has to be a record!
The Princess Bride, Shrek, and The Room
LotR and Star Wars prequels might also be neck in neck with a memes-to-movie ratio
This movie may be the most charming movie ever made.
I would always refer to my ferrets as ROUS' 🤣
It’s SOOO obvious! In the remake, it’s Fred Savage telling the story to either his own child or perhaps a niece or nephew. To get devices out of the picture perhaps he tells the story during a thunderstorm with a power outage and dead batteries?
There's a story about André the Giant, I think it's true. Whenever he went out for a meal with people, he would always insist on paying. He was at a meal with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Arnold went to pay first. André physically picked Arnold up, carried him outside, and deposited him on top of his car.
I applaud you Adam on not quoting this movie the entire time. I'm shit at not doing that with this movie
Jay it’s a good thing you liked this movie cuz Vlisteria also has a pit of despair lol
@@vijayanand6650 How odd, considering that The Princess Diaries is also awesome, just in a different way.
And “The Princess Diaries” is also a great, fun, charming flick! Most “chick flicks” are really quite lovely to experience 😊
Coincidence? I think not.😁
Oh my gosh. Jay doing the Tim Gunn “Andre” took me out. That was peak Project Runway.
Adam is clearly mind wiping Jay so he can watch films “for the first time”
Being a D&D player, I feel like The Princess Bride is required viewing so im shocked that Jay jas never seen this movie. Its always fun to watch someone watch this for the first time, especially a D&D player
I love how smoothly Mandy switches hands with his sword after confessing he's not left-handed. Also, it really impresses me that the two actors had to learn to sword fight with left and right hands. I love this movie so much.
When the grandpa says "As you wish" at the end, gets me every time!
My daughter hated Princess-y stuff when she was young and was going in with low expectations but just like Jay, it took care of those expectations in the most charming way.
I want my father back makes me cry every single time. Im glad you guys did this. One of my favorites.
Now you need to see Once Upon a Deadpool ft. Fred Savage 😂
I saw this video was up and my jaw literally dropped with PURE FUCKING JOY.
YES YES YES
Fun fact, in the scene where the Six-Fingered Man knocked Westley out, that wasn't acting. Guest ACTUALLY knocked Elwes unconscious 😱
100% true. I found that out from Elwes' book about the movie. The audiobook version is great, too.
The SUPER DADDIO shirt is absolutely adorable and wonderful.
And watching Adam watch Jay enjoy something is always a treat too.
I can never watch The Grandfather saying "As you wish" anymore without tearing up. RIP Peter Falk. ❤
I see someone watching The Princess Bride, I click.
Adam, your He-Man shirt is epic!
