No one has the right to abuse another in any way shape or form. The church needs to administer consequences and that does not mean hiding individuals at another place where the abusers can continue abusing. This is so sickening!

Thank you for being so brave a speaking out about this terrible abuse. The common misconception is that women don't abuse. And because of this erroneous belief they get away with it. They are still getting away with it. People need to speak out against ANYONE who is abusive. There's strength in numbers. The more people come forward the more we'll be believed.

We can speak out the truth but the truth is that in real life superiors can break law and do terrifing things and not held responsible on anythong they do.I am sorry to tell you that if you see and observe, there is no law that protects us, there is only power sometimes of these stupid, abusive and ....but powerful people, power that maybe who knows what they have done to have it....I am.really sorry for these nuns, but everywhere is something happening...Just remember, you are not alone.and you can fight it, not even have to go through something bad if you just see the red flegs just go and start creating your life however you can.

Also, the DA for the state of Connecticut has been trying, but it is rough, as documents about the abuse are missing. So, no one is paying for any of the crimes. Those who are considering joining religious life, please do NOT be afraid to ask the hard questions about what the life will be like and what checks and balances are in place, how keeping in touch with friends and family works, and most importantly, you should be able to have a spiritual director and confessor from OUTSIDE the community. If they are not transparent, or refuse to answer questions, that is a red flag.

I went on a retreat with sister kovacs when I was 13. I always thought there was something strange or off about the way they did things, like how we weren’t allowed to talk late at night until morning prayers. I didn’t witness any abuse, but there were things that happened that upset me.
I google SMMI every few years because I wanted to get back in touch with them, but now I see why I never found an address. I stopped being catholic years ago, but still, this story hit me extremely hard, as I always measured my worth to people like them who COULD be good Catholics and pledge their life to god in a way I couldn’t because of being queer. Thanks for the reporting, these women have likely been silenced for too long, and it snapped me out of the shitty way I measured my self-worth.

The terms here need to be made correct. Wherever a crime has been committed, these nun-abusers need to be arrested, jailed, charged and convicted in a criminal court for the crimes they have committed against the sisters they supervised. The sisters they physically and verbally abused must be willing to press charges against the offenders and the Catholic Church should also be charged in both civil and criminal court with both crimes and civil offenses, including offenses related to physical, sexual, and psychological offenses under labor laws. I would ask that Arianna Huffington/Huffington use her considerable power, influence, and connections to find a lawyer or legal team to take the legal action needed to bring charges against perpetrators and get commensurate compensation against the Catholic Church on behalf of these victims and those of any order or convent that has engaged in abuses against these and other sisters.

We are able to put feedback in during this presentation of women abusing women, why were we N O T given the same offer of feedback when the presentation was made about priests abusing women. It is that reason that leads me to believe that this felony will NOT be dealt with appropriately by the church. It is no longer a spiritual crime, this is a civil FELONY and needs to be dealt with in civil court for both these abusers and to truly help the abused. Priests and nuns during my entire time as a Catholic have shown themselves to be violent, physically and verbally abusive and sexually deviant. There were many alcoholics and short tempered priest and nuns who did not tolerate children or elderly. They did not like being confronted by parents or family members. People who gave more money to the church were given an entirely different attitude. The church failed to protect the abused women and children from violent, drunk men and used that behavior to preach a sermon to everyone, instead of addressing the men. Confession, to me became a big joke that is still that to this day. Forgiveness is fine but part of that forgiveness was linked to NOT continuing the bad behavior. That was not something priests or nuns were trained to do. They were as human as the rest of the world and could have done so much better than they have done but the church failed them as badly as it has failed the rest of us. The only nuns I ever try to Remember are the ones who treated me like I truly mattered to them and God. They were few and far between in my long period of practicing my Catholic faith. I no longer call myself a catholic and my late mother-in-law did not think Catholics were even Christians. Organized religion has become more evil and complacent than religious. It has to clean up its’ own act before preaching the Bible to anyone else. To those of you who are truly servants in your religious lives and truly practice what you preach, I do not included you in this negative tirade. May God continue his commitment to us and vice versa.

I am not a nun at all. I am A 71 year old mother of two sons and grandmother of three girls and a boy. They are all over 21 years except one girl who is a preteen this year. I consider myself a human being and nothing more. Hope we all meet in heaven someday, then we never need to argue about religion ever again. If you did not go to a Catholic school or be under the care of nuns and priests, you are as ignorant as you sound. Good luck in trying to believe you have answers to anything. Also some nuns were raped and molested by male religious. I have several cousins who were nuns and several who are and three who have passed away. We also had a priest in our family and two alcoholic ones leading our parish who were best friends with my alcoholic father. In our parish, the more money you donated the less you were lectured or counseled by the priest about your violence, sexual perversions, deadly vices etc.

I was called a prostitute, a was accused of being a witch and an occultist, I was excluded by the priest who I found out later that this woman who worked there her name is Jill O Sutherland is the priests girlfriend and lover. I was accused of things that are to horrific to talk about and this church suppose to be of Christ. It rocked my world and changed me forever. I was a loving person once full of life and happy. Now I am an Atheist. This religion is satanic and anyone who is a Catholic is not my friend. It destroyed my life. Shame on this sick and twisted cult called the Catholic Church.

Ive been accross some cranky priests but never abusive or rude. I know unfortunately that there are some. Same with nuns. Ive 3 months in a cloister monastery and well the nuns were not very spiritual except for a very elderly sweet nun who did the laundry. But well at least there was not abuse going on. Each of you should have done extensive research before entering the convent. There are countless autbiographies published by current and former nuns. You should never move blindly to any place. All of those games about food and lack of social contact is commonplace. Further, you should've had an outside benefactor with money who could support you inside and outside of the convent. As far as the physical abuse, you should know that was unacceptable. After the first physical assault, you should have made haste to notify someone in authority, or you should have left. I am a peacemaker; however, I would not have tolerated that disturbed nun who physically assaulted you, if I were in you shoes.

It's easier said than done. Decades ago, there was no internet so the ways in which you could research those convents were very limited. Even now, some orders make sure that they have no websites and thet very little about them appears on the internet. Those who have web pages also ensure that only positive or neutral info gets out. Obiously, still some information might leak online, with some luck. In this way one of my relatives avoided joining a lax abbey. As for ex-novices in this documentary, they were trauma-bonded so they didn't leave their communities as they perhaps sould. The same mechanism as with wives of abusive men.

People who join celibate religious orders already have major issues with personality defects, childhood abuse, and not a healthy concept of self. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that these tragedies happen. The normal healthy model is men and women in monogamous marriages with children. Only a small fraction of people deviate from the norm. Always be wary- living in a convent doesn’t mean you’ve spent anytime working on yourself, personal growth, self development. Those are what the goal of life should be, not hiding out in a religious order.

Have you ever lived in a women's monastery? If you haven't you can't possibly understand what these women have gone through? I have. Eventually I was tonsured, (Eastern Orthodox) but I live alone. I came from a background abuse. I didn't need any more. I even had a superior threaten to beat me. I said "The first time you hit me will be the last". How is threatening to beat someone helpful spiritually? I left and never returned. These women have been traumatized--years later, you can still hear how it has affected them. If you haven't experienced it, you cannot possibly understand.
