I'm actually a decent builder and don't really need this video but I think that it was done really well to help people who struggle with making builds. It reminds me of Bob Ross, in a sense. He teaches you how to make a specific formulaic painting and once you get the basics down, it becomes easier to visualize changing things from there to make it your own. This tutorial not only teaches hacks with roofs and such but also explains why each step is important, like the rule of 3's. Teaching the "why" makes it easier for a learner to eventually make their own intentionally made decisions. Building can be really overwhelming when you don't know what you're doing and I think this video is good for desensitizing the task. Well done!

Love all this advice! I just started experimenting with building in The Sims 4, I was a long time Sims 3 player, and these tips are really useful! I also agree that I wish more people would make the houses look a little bit more lived in instead of a magazine cover that you'd see in Homes and Gardens

i love that this video means all the times you gave your builds a clown prison-looking interior for your non-build-focused videos, it was just for laughs. this is quality and i'm stealing the floorplan and layout for my starters.

I know this is a year old, but I am fairly new to SIMS even though I had the game for a while I never played it. I had it for my grand daughters to play when they visit. Lately I have been killing my self playing this game and get so caught up with trying to learn how to build and all the little tricks. Thank you. I have watched a lot of your videos and they are always so helpful and I love your humor. I am pretty savvy with a pc and games or at least for the RPG pc games. Learning this game play has been a small challenge. I get so lost in the building or rearranging and before I know it 6 hours has passed, and haven't even played the actual game. LOL. But its my favorite part of the game even though I am not good at it yet.

I’m very lay with windows and just use the auto feature. It works pretty well and I can always remove one or two by hand if it’s too much or too little.

For those like me who are dead set on using flooring for a nice clean walkway and patio: Line it with a short fence, Sims can walk right over it.
Base game has a couple of these. The Smooth Keeper which is one of the cheapest and simplest and does the job well. The Wrought Iron Fence is a typical spoked garden fence and looks good around walkways.
You can also put terrain paint just along the edge of the flooring tiles to smooth the transition and create informal footpaths between the tiled ones. And of course you can use painted paths and tiled ones in combination.

Very helpful video. However you can place columns on half tile locations. Just press F5 once to activate half tile placement, place the column. Then Press F5 again to return to full tile placement.

I know he said that it's not a good idea to overthink things, but I find that it works sometimes. lol
Rather than sizing down Subtle Saucer lights, I will find logical places to put them, like near doors or in a nice, symmetrically spaced line or square shape. Yes, I will sometimes sit and try to make things look perfect with alt-placing, but it is often worth it to me. lol .nwn.

Is there a way to use platforms so that the game doesn't recognize each platform part as its own room? I made a bedroom with platforms, and couldn't put it on the gallery as a room because it would only select parts of the room. When I build a wall around the entire thing to put that on the gallery as a room, the bedroom walls could no longer be seen. It was so frustrating I finally added it as a lot, which of course shows the room from the top down, so you STILL can't actually see the room.

Very cluttered buildings look nice in youtube videos but they are a nightmare to have sims do anything when actually playing the game, so I keep my counters and floors free of stuff
