Fun story: Me, my mom, my sister and some of her friends were going to the movies to go see some recent movies that came out. But the kicker is that everyone, including my mom, went to go see the live action Little Mermaid. While I got to see an actually good movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse.

For a Disney Princess movie, Eric was a very likeable and relatable character. And though Triton was strict and bigoted he still felt bad about what he had to do to Ariel's grotto.
The remake did both characters so dirty. Scuttlebutt.
(Also it may just be a coincidence, but Peppino from Pizza Tower looks exactly like Louis. Exaggerated facial expressions and all)

All of Ariel's sisters being of different races is made weird when you take into consideration that they explain why Eric and his mom are different. For a moment I thought they were setting up that Eric is a merman. They try to explain it by saying that each of the sisters represents a different sea. In the movie, we have Spain and the Caribs but in the novel, there are made-up seas. Just make all merpeople or at least Ariel's family Black. Also, Triton mentions how humans killed Ariel's mom. Dude, you apparently have a whole harem. And Ursula is his sister? How? She's half octopus!

This new live action movie for me is how toy story 4 has been bad for you
I completely love the original movie and how characters were built, it might not be the most complex movie or that striking however it gave an insight of how dads and daughters should see eye to eye or both will suffer consequences,
The new movie, the dad wasn't as angry or enraged by her actions as the original, making her decision to be human look more dull and really out of pocket, it feels like "daddy wouldn't buy me my new car waaahhh wahhhh" instead of "my dad doesn't understand my point and he won't listen to me so i will prove it"
Making ariel kill ursula is stupid and dumb
How is she able to stir a ship?
How did she manage to conveniently reach the wheel WITH A TAIL and swing the ship CONVENIENTLY at the right moment?
Why is ursula going after eric in this scene while ariel was the one who killed her sidekicks?
Also eric had to save ariel because that actually proved 2 things
1)He loves her and is willing to sacrifice everything for her just like she did earlier
    2) she technically won here by provimg that she was right to her dad by his gesture
There are more reasons too but i cannot go over everything otherwise this comment would be longer than it already is

I can add by Eric saving Ariel, he proved to.Triton that not all humans are bad, Eric didnt judge or get weirded out for a moment (yes he was shocked but who wouldnt if your crush turned out to be half fish.) He instead jumped into action to try to get her back, very much how he didnt hesitate to jump in to save Max. Eric is also extremely experienced. Yeah L/A might have studied sailing but theres a difference between actually practicing and studying.

Ariel fell for a great, lovable , kindhearted man which speaks volumes about Eric's character
That goes for people who say eric had no personality yet he has done a lot in the original
He saved his dog, got a save boat for his crew, took in a homeless girl (ariel) and took care of her under his wing as he couldn't leave her stranded (unlike stupid live action eric who abandoned her after he knew she isn't her dream woman) , he took her around the place, didn't want to kiss her in kiss the girl sequence as he didn't want to toy with her feelings because he still longs for the dream girl, started to let go of the dream girl and fall for ariel, saved ariel TWICE

He's so soft-spoken through that whole scene, I can cheerfully read it as he is a man with a disturbing uncaring for the people around him, so Ariel has extra motivation to leave. An observation that I've made, however, is that in that scene, Ariel isn't even swimming with two legs, you can actually very clears see her sporadically move her legs and barely move in place when she realizes she can't breathe until Flounder and Sebastian help her get to the surface (which, fun fact: rapidly ascending in water is extremely dangerous due to rapid decompression and is something scuba divers have to be careful about).

Do the same thing for another group, except show them the original movie instead, but make sure neither party knows that the other version of the movie exists or anything about it. How would the impressions actually differ? I feel like it's too easy to judge the quality of the remake by comparing to the original, which often comes with some biases.

1:34:08 Boy, Ariel's confrontation with Triton was so much better in the animated film. I don't care if you like the remake; I don't see how you can possibly disagree with me on this one. When Triton rants about how all humans are evil only for Ariel to interrupt with "Daddy, I love him!" (insert Taylor Swift reference here), it just built up the tension perfectly. Here, Triton doesn't sound even remotely angry that his daughter is in love with a human. He just basically says, "you know you're not supposed to do that" and just immediately goes to destroying everything. Yawn.

I am going to write down comments as they come to me while watching this. I will put timestamps by some of them.
(no timestamp for this one since I thought of it during the beginning of the first movie) I was unbelievably mad when they didn't do this performance of "Daughters of Triton" in the remake. Don't get me started on the fact that they are clearly all of different ethnicity, which implies they are all from different mothers. Meaning that Triton at best is polyamorous. They also changed all their names which p***ed me off even more. They all start with A they all end with A except for Ariel whose name ends with L.
20:31 This disturbed me as a kid. So much! But I wouldn't trade it for the drivel they replaced it with in the remake.
21:23 Such a good song! Only made perfect by Samuel E. Wright. Rip you legend!
24:45 I can totally understand Triton here. He wants to protect his daughter. He knows humans are dangerous. He also seems very traditional. Meaning that a relationship between a human and mermaid (inter species couple, basically) would not be ok with him. Heck, I wouldn't be ok with it. He also knows that letting her go to the surface (giving her her own legs) would mean that he would be caving in on what he's been saying no to for years and years. It would also mean that she would probably not visit him often. As we saw at the beginning of the film, Triton loves Ariel very much. She is the youngest, and it is most of the time the hardest for a father to let go of their youngest. Because that means parenting is over. He definitely over reacted by destroying Ariel's human stuff, but I get where he is coming from.
26:47 One of my favorite villain songs ever. Right behind Hellfire and Be Prepared.
28:38 I heard people say that, too. But this movie set it up so that she not only wants to go to the surface be human for Eric, but for herself, too. She is very curious. Extremely curious. She just wants to know about humans. She isn't changing her body for love, she changed her body so she could go and see the human world for herself. While I am not for people changing their bodies at all, in fantasy, in fiction, it's ok. When this creeps into reality, that's where the problem lies. If people took from this film that Ariel is promoting the idea that changing your body for love is acceptable, then they weren't paying attention.
30:45 The fact that they always manage to make their live action remakes and hour longer than the original all while cutting important stuff out changing things that didn't need changing and adding in almost awkwardly long scenes just doesn't compute with me.
31:53 YUP! They have a line that spells it out. And still people are ignorant enough to call it, "Just for love."
33:17 They could easily have fixed this by making it so when Ariel signed the contract it was written in a different kind of print. Meaning the humans and mermaids both speak English but write it out differently due to them being in separate societies. Kinda like accents but amplified and adjusted for writing. This would've been enough for me in the remake. But noooo, they had to change something that changed the entire way Ariel interacts with Eric.
34:57 You have no idea how ticked I am that they didn't include this song in the remake. HOW? How is it a full hour longer and they cut out so frickin much?!?!
43:36 Yeah, I've heard that too. Then I rewatch to make sure they aren't gaslighting me or something and I realize that Eric pulled away. He didn't force himself on her at all. No one can say that if they actually pay attention to this movie.
44:33 You took the words right out of my mouth with, "Scuttle. Annoying to the characters. Not annoying to the audience." It isn't that way in the remake.
45:10 EXACTLY! Did you see the pens that Ariel is used to writing with? Ursula's was a fish skeleton pen. And I believe Triton just uses his trident at the end. It makes perfect sense as to why she didn't write. People just aren't capable of thinking through all the options.
49:30 This visual is super disturbing.
50:09 Eric might be my favorite Disney Prince for this. Either him or Philip from Sleeping Beauty. He sees the girl he's fallen in love with over the past couple days in trouble and he rows a tiny boat out do whatever he can to help her! He didn't even know what he was up against. He just went anyways. He didn't even know Ariel was a mermaid. Had no clue what was going on. Just goes with only a harpoon.
50:48 Ariel does indeed do things. She forces Ursula to defeat Flotsom and Jetsom. She is as just as much part of the fight as Eric.
51:33 Eric being able to get to this ship and hoist himself up onto shows that he is very used to being on the sea. He single-handedly gains control of and steers ship. 51:53 He is a sailor he knows how to sail a ship to some degree. He is strong enough to pull himself up onto the ship.
52:00 I would hate the remake solely for it's treatment of this scene. But they gave me so much to hate. This is just close to the top of the list.
52:26 I've heard people say that Triton is letting his daughter go live on land with a stranger she just met 3 days prior. I say look at what Eric did. He came to her rescue when she needed help the most. When her father was physically incapable to because he traded himself for her. He saw that Eric was a good person. Even though he wasn't a merman, he came to help someone in the sea. Eric saved Triton, too, remember. He saw him as worthy of his daughter. And his daughter worthy of following her own path.
52:54 He also learned to let go of Ariel. Like any good father does.
54:28 It's so gooood! Anyone who has a bad thing to say about The Little Mermaid 1989 will never be my friend.
I will put the comments about the live action remake in a separate comment. Most likely in the replies to this. Thanx for humoring this.

    • @squeebers
      @squeebers หลายเดือนก่อน +1

1:03:55 That's the reason, alright. But the point of the original was exactly what you said. He didn't know much about the humans. There's also this thing where Ariel's mom was killed by humans, but that's in a prequel.
1:04:16 I also want to point out just how much more inept this Eric is. He gets knocked off the ships front by a small wave? It's almost like he doesn't know how to sail. Oh wait, in this movie Eric doesn't know how to sail because they are demasculinizing him. Throughout this whole movie!
1:05:04 Sounds almost like a The Night at the Museum sound track.
1:06:13 Not only does Triton look bad, but look at his daughters and hear their names. They based these 6 mermaids off of the region from which they come from. But if they are Ariel's sisters, they should all be the same ethnicity, correct? I'm all for showing adversity. But if you are going to do it, do it properly. These mermaids could have still been from the different seas, but not Ariel's sisters. They could have still done the "Daughters of Triton" song, but not with these mermaids. But no, cut the song entirely. Why not? I mean it only emphasized the importance of the performance. The one where Triton would be showing off his daughters to his kingdom.
I wanna point out how odd it is that the underwater scenes are clearly filmed on dry land with cgi hair to make it look like it was underwater.
1:07:25 Oh, I see you've met Flounder. They ruined him.
1:09:30 This really confused me when I saw it in the theater. I'm like, " What do you mean the mirror reflection saw Ariel?" Also, Wasn't Flounder a bigger help in the original during this bit?
1:09:50 Alright everybody, strap in. 'Cuz, boy do I have words about this. I did some research before watching this in the theater. I started after I heard them say this about making Scuttle a Northern Gannet diving bird; "So, we could have more underwater scenes." I was like OK that makes sense. Wait, a bird's gotta breath air. How long can they hold their breath for? A Northern Diving Gannet Bird can dive up to 70 feet and hold it's breath for up to 30 seconds. Diving. They can't stay under the water standing on a rock. They dive down up to 70 feet catch the fish and go back up. All under 30 seconds. I have no problem changing a character's species if you need to for the story and it makes sense. However, while sitting there in the theater watching this for the first time, I was timing how long Squawkwafina over there was under the water for and it was close to 2 minutes or something. I wrote it down, but that notebook is in a box. I will dig it up later. My point is, they made it so she (I'll get to the gender thing in a minute) stayed under 4 times as long as a real Northern Gannet can. All while standing on a rock under the water. Also, talking under the water. Northern Gannets can dive, but I doubt they can squawk under water, as they need to hold their breath. Also, a Northern Gannet would float to the surface without the force of the dive or the paddling of feet to keep it down. They changed a character's species and only for one extra under water scene that really makes no sense. Then, on top of that, they had the audacity to give Squawkwafina the line, "I need some air." Yeah, she needed air like a minute and a half ago. Probably less with how much she's been talking.
Now the gender change. I wanna start by saying that this is a touchy subject, I know. However, my opinion must be said here. When a character is written to be a specific gender, they should not change that gender. They did it with Kaa and with Jaques, among others. I find it absolutely unacceptable. Especially in Jaques from the Lady and the Tramp's case. I won't get into that here. But know that I am unhappy. I also wanna point out that the fact that Scuttle's character was destroyed and put back together with the wrong pieces of the puzzle was lessened by their choice to cast a female in the role. What I mean is, the original Scuttle, voiced by Buddy Hackett wasn't absolutely disrespected by someone trying to recreate the voice and failing. Instead, they casted a female, not disrespecting the actor who poured his heart and soul into Scuttle, but rather disrespecting Scuttle himself and the people who designed him and animated him to life.
1:10:30 Aquafina also means Water's End. So casting Awkwafina as the dragon at the Water's End is acceptable to me. But not as Scuttle.
Starting a new reply. We are gonna be here a while.

1:10:51 OMG! You're right! He's supposed to be a Ghost crab which is only underwater to lay their eggs. "Ghost crabs are only semiterrestrial. Though they lay eggs in water and need to keep their gills wet, they will drown if they stay in the water too long." Sebastian is underwater hundreds of times longer than they actually can be irl. Did they do no research for this film? Another reason to hate this film.
1:11:01 Yeah, she went to ask a land based person about the things. but, Squawkwafina just drops in out of nowhere instead of Ariel having to go find her. And the scene takes place underwater for no reason.
1:12:57 I hate this change so much! It makes no sense. You are taking away the main reason why she wanted to go to live on land. Why would wanna take that away? All that's left is the thing people were complaining about. Ariel wanting to change her body to follow a boy. Like, what? You said it WAY better than me here. Lol!
1:14:42 It starts out okay, but those high notes, at least in my theater were so piercing that I thought my eardrums would explode. Her voice is more grating than Jodi's and I'm less invested in her story because it's just a vocal showcase.
1:15:12 I hate whatever she just did with the "free." I wanted to yell "SING IT RIGHT." in the theater. 1:15:34 Seriously why the riff? 1:15:49 STOP RIFFING HOLY CRAP! THIS ISN'T A SINGING AUDITION! You are a girl who feels oppressed by her father. Not a singing sensation.
1:17:47 I was gonna say it, but you already did.
1:18:14 Absolutely not! Eric was not adopted. I was fuming in the theater at this part, and we are nowhere near done! Like, why do they feel the need to elaborate? The simplicity of a story you wanna tell leaves plenty of room for the viewer's imagination to fill in the blanks. Why have it so blatantly spelling out for us? Also, he's 21, not 18. And this also means they don't know his true birthday, just the day they took him in. I hate this.
1:19:24 You see Eric isn't good at sailing. *bangs head against wall* WHY?!? He is a sailor in the original. He wants to explore the seas and he is reaching for that goal. Here he wants to explore the seas, but seems completely incompetent.
1:20:20 I couldn't explain why this scene left a bad taste in my mouth but you laid it out beautifully. How do you do that?
1:24:12 But remember guys, she's not only wanting to go to the surface for a man. Also, the singing here, the high note again felt like it was going to burst my eardrum in the theater. Her movement along the rock is so weird and unnatural.
1:25:52 I hate this. The voice is throwing me off. The dancing9if you could call it that) is less aesthetically pleasing. The vocals and instruments are weird. They changed it to be slower and more muted which takes away from the fun upbeat vibe of the original.
1:27:19 How is she not getting stung by those? The only non stinging jellyfish there are are either in the deepest parts of the ocean or not pink.
1:27:31 Soooo, are these meant to be normal sea turtles? Because they look like they are babies, just hatched. But they can't be because of their size. In my best Mort from Madagascar voice, "What are they? WHAT ARE THEY?"
1:28:28 Do jellyfish stings just not effect mermaids? What is this?
1:30:45 I hate that they gave Eric a song! They didn't need to! He didn't need it! He was a strong enough character without it! It doesn't fit in this movie! 1:32:21 I threw up a bit in my mouth having to re-listen to even the little bit in this video.
1:34:00 All their budget went into the fake explosions...
1:34:28 Yeah, No one can act. They are all dead-pan and no emotion.
1:35:30 I was unbelievably disappointed when Flotsom and Jetsom didn't speak and instead it was her.
1:37:08 In the theater I had to leave to go to the bathroom at this exact moment. I missed the whole song. What I did hear was awful. Also, it just doesn't work as well because she already is being open with Ariel about her intentions.
1:38:58 OMG! You are so right! How are you this good at words? I fumble.
1:40:44 Why would they remove that? Like, it showed Ariel's intentions. She wanted to go to the surface, but she wanted to be able to see her family, too. In this one, she just wants to go to the surface no matter what.

1:42:35 Strap in. I have things to say about this change. I do understand that they were trying to fix the problem of," Why didn't Ariel just write to Eric?" thing with this, and I appreciate that they were making an effort. However, it wasn't needed. At least, handling it this way wasn't needed. Did they even know how much the film would change when they make it so Ariel doesn't know she needs that kiss? I don't think they did. Because Ariel behaves extremely different than in the original and it isn't for the better. Not only that, there is a simpler explanation for as to why she couldn't write to Eric. One that doesn't require an entire character rework. Make it so the merpeople's writing is different than a human's. simple. Or make it so the pens used underwater are vastly different than the ones the humans use. They could've have even made it so Ariel couldn't write as the added thing in the spell. That would've been better. But no, they had to rework everything to fit around this new clueless Ariel.
      1:43:00 OMG! TRUUUE!
1:43:47 Because it makes the relationship between Eric and Ariel more natural if he's the one who finds her on the beach. And we can't have that. Also, I hate that Ariel still finds a way to sing without her voice. I really wanted more vocal showcases. Imagine being so consumed by the radiance of your own singing that you think in song. Him finding her makes sense. He is looking for her.

I oopsied. Starting another reply I guess.
1:49:52 I know they wanted to make a connection between Ariel and Eric, but this was a bit much. I mean him doing the exact thing she did? Are they for real? Like how'd he even get this stuff? He is awful at sailing in this one. Did he just go along for the ride and not take initiative to learn to sail? Like, it's fine. But I don't think it adds much.
1:51:35 The change also made it so Sebastian's role had to be changed slightly. Now instead of having Ariel to count on to get that kiss, he has to figure out how to get both of them to fall in love. Ariel knew the mission in the first film. Now she is clueless. Almost useless. If they were going for strong female character they missed the mark by even making this remake in the first place.
1:51:49 That's not how physics works....
1:55:21 I hate that they changed the lyrics. Are people really such sensitive snowflakes that, "There's only one way to ask her." bothers them?
1:56:25 I think that this is the only. And I mean ONLY cute change they made in the entire film. The way Eric learns Ariel's name. However, I don't think it was needed.
1:56:38 Never mind. You are right! It's stupid. There's no way that during that short time of Eric showing her books he could teach her what constellations are how to find them and the names.
2:01:07 This isn't a bad song with minor adjustments, namely Squawkwafina not being the one to sing it and leaving out the, "Squawk chicka Wah wah!"s. I kinda like the song. If those two things were changed. Oh and if it wasn't sung in that annoying way. Make an annoying character, sure. But make it annoying to the other characters, but andearing to the audience. They've lost the ability to do this apparently.
2:09:59 In the theater, I was like, "Yes! Go Eric!" *There's no way they are gonna tease us with him being on the boat and then not do it.* But then, he got tangled in the rope and ended up dangling there like a bumbling idiot for a few precious seconds. I was overcome by a rage so great it is impossible to describe.
2:10:25 Everything you said here is exactly what I was going to say and more. I will add one other thing, too. Eric not pulling himself up in the time it took Ariel to pull herself up, WITH A TAIL, pull herself over to the steering wheel without getting knocked back again, and then actually steering the ship into Ursula is ridiculous. She wouldn't be able to reach the wheel enough to turn it enough, let alone keep from rolling further away from the wheel. Ursula turning her attention to Eric makes 0 sense because she is mad at Ariel, not Eric. People have said that the princes are all too basic and never do anything, I say are we watching the same movies? Eric did nothing in this film. He's more basic than the prince in Snow White. And even he has a better character. And we don't even know his name really. I hate this movie!
2:10:59 OMG! I forgot that that was all it took! That's so pathetic. Eric in the original had to stand there and stay rooted to steer the boat towards Ursula and all Ariel had to do was flop like a fish?
And the fact that Eric fell off the boat, GAAAAHH!!
Ariel diving for the trident instead of helping Eric is the most awful choice I've ever seen someone write for a character in one of these remakes.
      The pacing is absolutely awful!
I also wanna mention that extremely long awkward moment when Ariel hands Triton the trident. It is unbelievably overdrawn.
I left the theater thinking that this was the best remake so far, but now, I don't think there is such a thing. and this remake would be near the bottom.

Honestly, the original overall holds up. But I will admit that the biggest problem with the movie is the fact that there was NO ATTEMPT for Ariel to communicate who she was beyond gestures.
Yes it's great, but I feel like in a movie where your voice does matter, it should matter beyond verbal words.
Heck if they needed an excuse for why Ariel doesn't just...write who she is despite being able to sign her name on a contract.
You could explain that she has a VERY limited understanding of words in physical form.
Heck, maybe instead you could have her learn to express herself through painting! Cause You know what they say: A picture can hold a thousand words!
They didn't need to race swap Ariel for the sake of "diversity" when in reality it's the CHEAP way out when "providing diversity in the modern day", at least in general. No it doesn't mean raceswapping characters is a bad thing overall. But one can tell when it was done for no other reason than to force diversity instead of making original diverse characters.
And need I say more about the negative uses of whtewashing and the negative affects it has had on minorities????
They didn't need to do the male characters dirty.
They didn't need to make Scuttle more annoying (NOT CAUSE OF THE ACTRESS) than they already were originally for the sake of "humor".
Don't change the scene where Eric saves Ariel by killing Ursala with the ship, cause not only does it symbolize Eric repaying the favor of Ariel saving his life before, but it also shows King Triton that not all humans are bad!
Hell, they didn't need to remove the parts in unfortunete souls where Ursala is trying to say "Men don't care about a womans voice" in her song cause it actually makes sense for it to be in there CAUSE SHE IS LITERALLY TRYING TO CONVINCE ARIEL TO SELL HER VOICE TO HER!
Just fix the problems in the original had that have a REASON to be fixed and you'll be golden! Don't change or try to "fix" shit that doesn't need chaning or fixing to begin with!
