  • Warsaw, Poland is considered to be a cheap place to live for expats. Just how cheap is it though? What is a realistic cost of living? Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere sits down with Amina, an expat from Algeria who now lives in Warsaw. Amina talks about culture shock, getting fined on public transportation, how to live in Warsaw on a budget, racism, and much more.

I have not heard about foreigners being harassed or hit during the Independence Day march which is well protected by Polish police and volunteers. The Independence Day is a big deal in Poland because it celebrates the reappearance of Poland on the map of Europe after 123 years. The Independence Day is celebrated by all kinds of people including family with children. You can also meet some foreigners during the Independence Day march and celebrations. All the best and Pan Zalewski is lucky to have a wife like you!

The issue of 11 November is exaggerated. The nationalist marches are not violent, they are quite peaceful. Some of the people are xenophobic, chauvinistic, maybe even fascists, but it's not like they're doing anything bad to other people.

I am from South Africa, would like to live and work in Poland. It is not save here anymore and our freedom to walk in town or go places are getting more dangerous. Your own home is like a jail, barb wire, alarms, beams, security systems etc. Walk around with a firearm and pepperspray and knife.

Independence day riots indead can happen in Warsaw, but rioters fight "just" police. Foreigners should be safe until they wont do something really stupid, like trying to pass between fighting groups.

Yeah, sadly at the 11th November nationalists and fascists take Warsaw hostage, but in other cities its pretty chill. For example in Poznań we have at the same day Saint Martins Day and its a street festival and alongside that we also celebrate the 11th September without that nationalistic BS. We even have a saying that was created as "counter culture" to the nationalists taking hostage the 11th September which is "Make rogals, not war".
