This is the defining hymn of Pentecost and undoubtedly one of Ralph Vaughan Williams finest tunes. Ralph Vaughan Williams was born in the village of Down Ampney in 1872, and his father was Vicar of All Saints' Church. Ralph was baptised in the church there and named this tune after the place where he was born. In the church liturgical calendar we only sing this once a year however we owe much to Bianco of Siena who wrote the original text.
The words speak volumes of the yearning to discover the Comforter and to make this central to everything in life. It is He that becomes the place and who makes His dwelling within us. Thank you to St. Andrew's Cathedral for a beautiful rendition.

Yes this is a wonderful hymn, but did you know that the music was composed by a man who was a DEVOUT ATHEIST.
Vaughan Williams wrote the music because as he stated “IF A MAN IS COMPELLED TO GO TO CHURCH THEN HE SHOULD HAVE SOME GOOD MUSIC TO LISTEN TO”.
Thank Rafe Vaughan Williams for this wonderful music.

Other atheists that the Holy Spirit apparently inspired and worked with in the creation of deep and divine work: Rowan Atkinson and Simon Le Bon.
      That's 3 Brits right there.
The Holy Spirit KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING - always, and the effects are never less than utterly wondrous and beautiful.

Alas. We have only three verses in the American hymnal. Perhaps Episcopalians here don't want to hear about *loathing*, even though it adds a nice touch of puritanical Calvinism.

In my experience, the "weep with loathing" gives a voice to struggles of wanting to love and listen to God and others better, just like "the yearning strong with which the soul will long" is about being restless living in an imperfect world. It also gives me hope that self-hatred and painful, bitter discontentedness (the 'dark side' of the weeping and longing) can be redeemed and transformed by the Holy Spirit. I feel so seen and heard when I sing and hear this.

Wot, and they couldn't even learn the words? I was a boy soprano singing this as solo or trio a hundred years ago. We didn't need no stupid song book :(

And obviously didn't need any lessons in English Grammar either!!!! C'mon, lighten up and give glory to the Holy Spirit instead of picking nits out of your dusty memories!!!
