    Most people do not realize that this is not a religious song. It is a song about war and defeating the enemy, which was the American South during the Civil War. The modern versions omit the verse; I have seen a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel, the burnished rows of steel are muskets. And the verse; as he died to make men holy let us die to make men free, refers to freeing the slaves.

    "As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free..." It's good to remember that the lyrics to the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' were written during the American Civil War as a call to arms in the fight against the South and slavery.

      The free world is just an illusion. You need to learn some history to broaden your horizons about the free world. The Battle of the Hymn of the Republic is a great song mainly dedicated to John Brown's effort against slavery.

      @mark cahill It's a popular church hymn in Englsih church, titled "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory". It was Winston Churchhills favorite hymn. But it obviously takes a very different meaning when your take a war song to a church hymn. This fine choir did the original Americna version proud without watering down its original purpose, which was a marching song about man who were willing to kill and die in order to set their nation on the right path.

    I am actually amazed that every person in this famous hall had freakin' sheet music. They stand and sing like a massive choir of angels. More of the size the choir on the stage. Wow. Now that is what I like to Audience participation. Wish churches can sing choir music. Love it.

      My friend has been on stage ,with her choir, at the Royal Albert Hall. She said it was an amazing experience. Singing together really lifts the spirit, wither you’re a marvellous singer or not. This was a great video.

      I was listening to the story of the American Anthem The Star spankled Banner. And also this song being sung here written in Abraham Lincolns time.
      In this late time with nations in the mess they are, when all good is shouted down and there is corruption high and low, I realised what was missing today in America, and Canada, and the UK too.
      There is no longer inspiration. The minds and hearts are no longer cohesive, the heart is not lifted. There is no truth or joining.
      So very sad.

    I went to 2 high schools that had choirs. The first one had 4-5 choirs. Their last presentation of the school year always finished with the Battle Hymn of the Republic. My year it was 650 students and former students, singing 6 part harmony. It was the most amazing song I have ever been a part of. Very emotional.

    During the American civil war the workers of the Lancashire textile mills came together and refused to process any slave cotton until the union victory at great financial difficulty to themselves and Lincoln repaid this with sending ships laden with aid to the workers

      Total nonsense. At the time of the civil war in the US, cotton was very difficult to come by and the price increased dramatically, this caused the Lancashire Cotton Famine (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancashire_Cotton_Famine) and great hardship for the workers.

    Beautiful performance. Juliet Ward Howe said the lyrics came to her in a dream. Regardless, it is a powerful song that resonates even today. The fact that it was sung in St. Paul's three days after 9/11/2001 makes it that much more relevant to now.

    The words as orginally written were NOT "Let us LIVE to make men free". It was "Let us DIE to make men free". That change RUINS the song. WHY did you do that? "Wokism"?

    In the 1960's, during the Civil Rights Movement, I sang in a choir and was asked to sing "Let us live tomake men free." I think it is appropriate, and I cannot sing it any other way.

    This song is titled Battle Hymn of the Republic, actually. It's not really a traditional hymn as much as it was a patriotic song written for Union troops during the American civil war.

    This hymn , the Battle Hymn of the Republic was of great importance during the Civil War 1861-1865 . Over 600,000 perished on both sides .

      @@martinputt6421 The 'English Revolution/Civil War' of the 17th Century killed 10% of England's population. However, Charles 1 raised his 'Standard' in Nottingham in order to maintain the Divine Right of Kings. He lost and this asserted the authority of Parliament leading in time to the 'Constitutional Monarchy' and further protest and Dissent since then has led to 'Universal Suffrage' etc. If England had not lived through those times than we would live under an autocratic monarch like Morocco. No thank you. It's a shame that the 'House of Lords' got brought back after 'Cromwell' had done the right thing and abolished them.

      Wrong. The American Civil War resolved conflicts left over from the Revolution and resulted in the enactment of laws that were fundamentally important to the country's continued existence: among other things, it permanently banished slavery; it established that once a state enters the Union, it cannot leave; and it affirmed the supremacy of Federal law over state law. The importance of the Civil War cannot be overstated; the USA is what it is today because of that war.

    I have to break her cover but the secret daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth the Second, Susan , Mary, Windsor is being treated for Cancer at St James Hospital in Leeds...I am told she is the wife of a very important person who is definitely spiritual...May God bless her and the personnel who have treated her and looked after her.
