Henry Francis Lyte's immortal hymn on the Christian hope in darkness remains one of the enduring favourites sung by millions worldwide.
God's promises through Christ, through suffering and death remain absolute, giving much needed hope and focus at this time of grieving and suffering worldwide.
The day before churches were shut down in Sydney, we very quickly recorded, with a very reduced and socially-distanced St Andrew's Cathedral Choir, several well-known hymns and psalms. We hope to share more shortly. We hope that you find them all useful in this difficult time when churches are unable to meet. THANK YOU for posting this. 4 months ago my 46 year old son died. We didn't know until he was 38 that he had a genetic disease (Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy). We got the best care possible. We live near Georgetown Univ Hospital in Washington DC.
So my son is dead, my husband dead, youngest sister dead etc
I've always loved movies, so I've been watching a lot of them now while mourning my son.
Here's the point, I've watched A BRIDGE TOO FAR 1977 three times this week and towards the end of the film wounded, the dying et al are sitting defeated and one by one they begin to sing this song.
You all sing it so we'll and it touched my heart.

Abide with me was written by Henry Francis Lyte who was at one time vicar of All Saints Church in Brixham. He lived in what is now the Berry Head Hotel in whose grounds he supposedly wrote the hymn. It's hard to believe a mere vicar could have lived in what is a very substantial, grand building commanding fantastic views of Torbay. There is a memorial to the hymn in Brixham harbour. Long may it continue to be sung at every FA Cup final.

As a Catholic Christian and a Knight of Columbus,
I find this church hymn very helpful and encouraging and inspirational because there are times that I'll feel emotionally upset and drained and discouraged I almost feel like giving up but I'm reminded that since I'm a Knight of Columbus, I have a obligation and that is get the message out to other men who hopefully are sincere practicing Catholic Christian and to recruit them to join. So there's two things that I can't do.
1. I can't easily give up.
2. I can't falter either.
So if I'm having difficulties of trying to recruit men to join the Knights of Columbus, then I should pray to Blessed Michael J Mcgiveney and ask him to intercede for me and give me words of encouragement and inspiration.
