  • Hurricane Ian was a historic hurricane during the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season which caused devastating to catastrophic impacts across Cuba, Florida, and the Carolinas in the United States. The impacts of Hurricane Ian are still being felt across those regions mentioned, with search and rescue crews still digging through the damage left behind by Ian. Our analysis team has looked over the data available for Ian, and now our preliminary analysis on Hurricane Ian is now here.

I’m glad the in-depth intensity effects of tropical cyclones (like the C4 getting more purple as it gets closer to C5) are now being included in these tropical cyclone animations. I was always confused as to why they were always in the season animations yet not the individual storm animations.

Absolutely splendid animation! Ian will be remebered as one of Florida's worst hurricanes in history. The storm killed over 100 people and caused devestation from Cuba up to the Carolinas. It doesnt matter if Ian was a category 5 or a category 4, it will go down as a storm that destroyed some areas of Florida leaving many areas completely devestated, hoping all in Florida a quick recovery.

This storm will be remembered for years to come. I have a family member down in Fort Myers, she said Ian was the worst storm she’s ever been through. She luckily escaped with little damage, though without power for more than a week. The beach I stayed at back in April this year is gone. Nothing is left. It was legit heartbreaking to watch. Fort Myers and Sanibel will stand strong.

I remember when some people were saying this year was gonna be a 2013 repeat because of the inactivity and some people were letting their guards down because of the no storm August, but with Fiona and Ian it's no longer a quiet season and unfortunately now deadly and destructive, Ian definitely proved that it ONLY TAKES ONE to change everything.

It bothers me that at least half the comments here are either comments about people's personal analysis or comments of how the text is purple, possibly indicating a c5 by f13 analysis (and some people are even excited about it!?)
If you saw my animation on scratch, you'll know what I have to say - the impacts of hurricane Ian are very real. Thousands of people lost everything. Some even lost loved ones. I personally know people who have had their lives impacted by this storm. Some areas of Florida will be uninhabitable for months, if not years.
Focus on the impact. Not if the storm had winds of 150, 155, or 160 mph. Because that honestly doesn't matter. At least, it doesn't matter to the people who were actually impacted. In a few months time, sure we can debate about whether Ian was a cat 4 or a cat 5, but now? NOW? To debate over whether the wind speed was 5 mph higher is inappropriate and it is insensitive to the people who were hit so hard by this storm.
That's all I have to say. I am one person, and I won't be able to fix this problem. But I ask that you stop focusing so much about the exact category of the storm, and focus more on the impacts.

Yes exactly. Ian was so strong that as it was rapidly intensifying from tropical storm to hurricane the central dense overcast was exploding in all directions especially over the eye and actually choking itself out. Hurricanes need strong clear eyes to really get the sinking going to ramp up the wind speeds. If Fiona’s outflow wasn’t there we would have sent sub 920s 175-185mph. Ian finally got the big Dorian like eye just before landfall. It literally just got an organized eye at the last moment.
Post analysis the NHS will upgrade it to cat5, the recon found confirmed 158.8 hours before it strengthened even More.
