      @@virgogaming6488 I absolutely agree- but I don’t think that romance between Finn and Rey should’ve existed in the first place. Regardless of who the actors are. They both should’ve had their own separate journeys- Rey should’ve been able to do her own thing without being put into a relationship with anybody else. And Finn should also have had his own journey- I think he could’ve been single or ended up in a relationship, as long as he still had his own arch and that relationship wasn’t shoehorned in. He was both relegated to the sidelines, and shoehorned into a forced and awkward relationship with another character. I just don’t understand the obsession with putting every movie character into a relationship.

    Something to note: Vader never abused the Stormtroopers, he killed officers that wasted trooper lives out of greed for political power or revealing their incompetence that would cost trooper lives. The Stormtroopers were actually very loyal to Vader because he treated them very well and he stood up to the officers that were untouchable by the soldiers for them. That would have made for a good story and having them both learn from Luke would have been great. And Rey could be with Leia fighting off Kylo as his fleet chases them instead of it being about fuel management.

      Them being each other's mentor would create a lasting bond.
      They would know each other's weaknesses, and protect each other from anything that would do their loved ones harm.
      There was potential for a naturally developed romance that wouldn't feel forced nor contrived.
      However, their love for each other is also a weakness (something the darkside loves to exploit). Both Finn and Rey have the potential to be captured (or killed). This severely reduces rationale, and the fate of the entire Resistance could have been thrown in jeopardy because of it.
      Finn could have been expendable for the sake of plot... instead of being expendable because he's overlooked by writers.

      Yeah the main thing is that each film had a different creative vision behind it. And unfortunately the way Disney planned this trilogy left it doomed to fail. JJ was given the job to make the first third of a story and so he wasn't really attached to any of the character's or their stories otherwise he would want full creative control of what happens to them in sequential films. The Star Wars trilogies are 1 story told in three parts and the sequel trilogy is one story with a different writer with a different vision for every act. Every story is trying to say something. The OT and PT have consistent theming throughout every film. The ST is just a mess.

    • @dd11111

      @@plustico2846 The series was doomed to fail the moment it was sold to the soul-less "praise be to the mighty dollar, profit before passion!" Mega-company that is disney.
      You're talking about a franchise with Tolkien levels of worldbuilding, where the fantastic, magical world (or in this case Entire Galaxy!) full of wonder, whimsy, strange creatures and amazing powers is as much a draw to the audience as the personal stories told within and throughout it.
      That doesn't happen without a very imaginative and creative person at the helm, with PASSION to tell the SOUL of THEIR story.
      Thats why, for all their flaws. The prequels still FEEL like star wars. They tell us more about the world, the characters and the overall plot.
      I can imagine a childlike glee on Lucas's face if you asked him to tell you "The story of The Star Wars." And I don't think that sparkle in his eye would have changed if you asked him a age 8 or 80.
      Can you imagine that same excitement on the faces of a bunch of boardroom executives, or corperate writiers, who are only there because it's their job?

    Finn is especially frustrating to me. I read the _Before the Awakening_ book to my son before _The Force Awakens_ came out, and I was so hyped for the Finn presented in that book. In _Before The Awakening,_ Finn is at the top of his cadet trooper class, Phasma’s pride and star student. He is the perfect stormtrooper, except for his warm, merciful heart. Time and again, he goes off-mission to help less skilled troopers, including the comrade whose blood gets on Finn’s helmet in the beginning of TFA. It is the voice of the Force within him that staves off the darkness and keeps him from becoming a brutal slayer.
    ...aaaand then I watched the movie. After the first 30 minutes, it was obvious that the backstory book story arc and the movie story arc for Finn never would never intersect. Like aspect of the Sequels, every single story was approached separately, without any overarching story for each chapter or episode to nestle into. It is so extremely frustrating that a company that literally has all of the resources a project could possibly need shows such blatant disregard for character building, worldbuilding, or the overarching story universe that their tales are theoretically being woven into.

    • @DarthdYT
      @DarthdYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Wow, great details Max, thanks. I hadn't heard anyone talk about that book, that's a great first hand explanation. And about the failure of Disney to build a cohesive universe, yeah, it's mind boggling. What actually makes the most sense is the rumors of power struggles within the company to replace Iger when he retired so the SW theme park and franchise were somehow sabotaged to take those corporate leaders out of the running. Sounds too crazy but people had gathered enough pieces of evidence to make me wonder...

    • @MaxWellenstein
      @MaxWellenstein 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That makes a lot of depressing sense, @@DarthdYT. Star Wars is just a revenue stream to a lot of the Disney top brass, and so there is - to fans - shockingly little thought to story cohesion and an overarching meta narrative beyond what market research says will sell to the broadest audience. So we get Instagram friendly, finger-nail-deep pop culture woke-washing, but no real investment in the character motivations. It's all to show profit ASAP, not a long-term investment that will continue to pay dividends over the next several decades.
      The _Before the Awakening_ book is... fine. It's targeted at 8-12 year olds, so you can probably just burn through it in an hour or two if you ever want to read it. If not, the Star Wars Fandom Wiki page does a fine summary. And yes, that book is designated part of the Disney Canon, so the character swings between the book and the movies are particularly discombobulating. Just further proof that there was zero lateral sharing between creative teams, and everyone was working from top-down directives. The book presents Finn as a ready-made badass with a heart of gold, gives some bits of plausibility as to why Rey is good at starship repair and piloting, and establishes Poe as a good leader, ace pilot, and intelligence operative.

I feel like a good character building moment between Rey and Han/Chewie could be a dinner scene where she's stuffing her face and Han's says something like "Easy there kiddo, you eat nearly as much as this fuzzball!" and she has a little moment to have light embarrassment but also happiness at being able to taste food that isn't some grey soufflé from a slug guy. Given Finn‘s stated backstory in the movie he should have had all the habits and traits of soldier all through the movies.
    Instead of a bumbling buffoon, he sold have been focused, discipline and deadly. He sold by constantly checking and maintaining his gear and weapons. He should stand at attention when introduced to characters like Leigha whom he would interpret as being of superior rank. And so on...
    Nothing in the movies’ treatment of the character actual suggest he was raised to be soldier. If someone missed the first 15 minutes of the film, they would never guess that was his background.
    Contrast this with the characterization of Luke as a wholesome farm boy, something that plays a keen role in explaining his optimistic, earnestness.

    Poor, poor poooor JB…such a great actor who tried and gave so much to his character I unfortunately, I dislike his character, but that is by no means anything to do with him. He actually elevated his character to unbearably meh. He deserved so much better! So do we know if they are trained ‘from birth’ or is that a point made to over state how loyal they are?
    I would have LOVED if Rey started out just strong massively untrained…just raw because of her past….and gradually loses strength in the force as she learns to control, and as she starts to heal from Finn and her friends….or something like that….would have been so much more interesting than the massive upward curve of strength we got with zero flaws

    I've said it for years that the second biggest problems the sequels had was the shallowness of the characters. They simply do not behave as their backstories would sugest, they just became generic adventure movie characters with almost no depth. Rey should've been an urchin and Finn very dysfunctional and unfamiliar with non regimented life. And the story should've flowed from there.

      Thank you, very glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, after looking at Rey's backstory in the other video essay, I really think the most logical way for the two characters to change from hurting selfish loners into heroes was via the romantic route. Which oddly enough, the script actually has some of the things I mentioned, like when Finn holds out his hand to help Rey, the script says she's shocked because no one ever tried to help her before. But then the video gives us the line "stop trying to hold my hand". It's like the initial meaning of the script was totally changed.

    The only character that made me want to watch the movies (you know before they slaughtered his character). I know before I put what I'd do with characters in general but I want to add what I'd do specifically with Finn. Due to his upbringing in the strict and brutal First Order, Finn has constant moments of self-doubt, can't recognize when someone is trying to genuinely compliment, has no idea what humor is, and flinches when someone yells at him but as time goes on and he develops real friendships he learns to not assume that everyone is secretly out to get him and rely on others.

    Midichlorians to me never broke the mysticism or mythology of star wars. To me it signified that the Jedi were getting way too focused on the how than the why, which would be their downfall. They went from Monks to scientists and generals trying to classify everything about being a Jedi instead of just feeling, using, and wielding the force.

    I think Finn could have made a great side story. It's a little hard to address "they're kidnapped child soldiers" plot in a blockbuster that also wants to also be able to treat stormtroopers like mooks in a Bond film and mow them, blow them up by the millions in enemy ships, and treat having them fly into walls with a jetpack and exploding as a joke.
    (Or, more generally, it's really hard for a movie about Finn's past to have its climax be a large space battle, as is expected in a mainline story movie.)

    I would of loved to see the first movie be Finn and Rey teaching each other the dark and light side of the force then having their first battle against Kylo which he beats Rey and Finn badly to the point they almost die until... Luke sweeps in and sneaks them away before Kylo can murder them both. The second movie would be Luke training Finn and Rey the past of the jedi the missing peace of training the needed. Rey has accepted the knowledge while Finn struggles because he still doesn’t accept the ways of the past jedi since he was brainwashed when he was child. He still is struggling with trusting the force. Luke, Finn and Rey fight Kylo. Finn gets beaten badly while Rey holds her own but ends up losing. Luke tries to save Rey but ends up getting killed. When this happens Kylo looks at Rey to give her the final blow but the sound of the lightsaber goes off in the background. Finn has Luke lightsaber Finn has finally accepted the force! (This makes the theatre go crazy like when Captain America picked up the hammer) Like Thor Rey says “I knew it”. Finn is going toe to toe with Kylo at some points almost winning but Kylo gets away. The third movie is Kylo having a plan to destroy the rebellion but now with a prepared and finally ready Finn and Rey they fight Kylo and finally destroys him. They make sure to learn from Luke’s mistake. They won’t abandon the next line of the force/jedi. The force will be in the right hands for now on. Which ends the Star Wars Saga.

    Finn being a Force Trooper could have greatly enhanced Kylo's arc and path to redemption as well. By introducing Finn as someone Kylo trained personally (and possibly even developed a sort of friendship with), it would sting him greatly to have Finn betray the Order. Having felt that sting of betrayal, he could then be awakened to the revelation that he needs to reconcile with his parents as well as with Luke.

    Considering his backstory his set up in the force awakens, Not a new concept in Star Wars but the first time we ever see on SW cinema, he definalty is the most wasted character.
    Still a better character in the sequel trilogy my opinion. When you look at all three films and see Ray who you cannot list a single conviction because she’s a Mary Sue and all over the place, then you have Poe who at first was a great warrior and now a hothead idiot who puts people in danger and all the sudden a spice runner once upon a time for some reason and finally, Kylo Ren who is the most inconsistent character in the whole trilogy. Out of all those characters, Finn is the least bad, only by a mile though. An interesting and compelling story about an abused kid should not have been treated like he is an extra from the three stooges.

    What if instead of hiding in shame, Luke was hiding the remains of the new Jedi order on his planet? Those that survived Kylo Ren's betrayal and slaughter, some severely injured. His need to protect them from further harm driving his to make the impossible decision between going back out there, seeing his friends again, and being the legendary hero of the rebellion, or staying to protect the future of the Jedi from being wiped out again.
    When Rey and Finn finally find him, he senses that they're incredibly steeped in the dark side of the force, but just smiles and says that "No one is beyond redemption." And that's how the first film of the sequel trilogy ends. We have two main characters we can be invested in, we can have a missing Luke Skywalker, and a story that doesn't completely assassinate his character.

    This whole essay points to what, in my opinion, is the biggest failure of the sequel trilogy. The Force Awakens set all three movies on a dull and unimaginative path; there are almost no interesting ideas within that movie resulting in extremely shallow pool of good characters and factions to build story from going forward. Finn's baggage as a stormtrooper is almost never brought up, it never even shows in the way he fights, which by the way is a criminal mistake. The lack of originality is so severe, that when Rian Johnson needed a fresh story beat, he had to take the OG good guy, Luke Skywalker, and turn him into hermit so that he can get some character conflict. People shit on Rian for breaking with what JJ had planned, but in all honesty, it is Abrams' lack of vision that we are all paying the price for.

      My biggest problem with TFA was it gave Rey a trilogy arc in 1 film so there was no where for her character to go. She was already powerful, could do everything, and beat the villain. This forced Rian to hit reset.

    At 40:05, to be fair, Luke's force powers had remained dormant for most of his life too, same goes for Leia as well

    • @DarthdYT
      @DarthdYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would argue the distinction is between "dormant" and "unnoticed".
      For instance, 2 quick examples:
      1. "Luke is the best bush pilot in the outer rim territories." Consider what that claim means, there's probably at least millions, if not billions of beings in the Outer RIm, and he's considered "the best". That's pretty good evidence of a strong connection to the Force helping him see things before they happen, which is how Anakin was such a good pilot.
      2. Luke thinking it not a big deal to hit a target 2m wide while flying at full speed, while another pilot says that shot is impossible even for a computer. Luke is such a good shot because of the Force, and he's never even realized how far above average his skill level actually is.
      And regarding Leia, I've heard the theory (or maybe it was outright stated in an EU book) that she progressed so quickly in politics because of her connection with the Force.
      But again, all of that is happening without their direct knowledge, which is why I say unnoticed, not dormant.

    2. He absolutely does act like someone with a bounty on his head and scared of the First Order.
    3. Finn beong force-sensititve works because it's never established in Star Wars lore that a person a person has to feel it their entire lives for them to have it. It doesn't break canon at all.
    4. Maryann Brandon the editor of TFA has pointed to Finn breaking his conditioning as possible evidence of his force-sensitivity. So there is evidence, it just depends on whether one wants to see it.
    5. Before the Awakening says the training never took with Finn so the
    idea that him being brainwashed disproves his connection to the force doesn't work.

    I like the idea Finn only did sanitation jobs and hadn't had the same training or battle experience of other troops and been somewhat oblivious to what was going on outside of the very contained existence he was exposed to. He just got slotted into an empty spot. This actually makes sense. Could have still made him force sensitive, untrained. Have Rey and him learn together. Or not, he still could have been a great character without that.
    I hated the whole bitter, cynic Luke Skywalker thing and hated the whole Palpatine thing so that would have to change. Ben could still have been a failed student who turned dark but Luke could have still had a small number of students he was training and protecting. Finding Luke could have been more like a call to arms, revealing the emerging new Jedi into the fight and quickly giving basic training Rey and Finn but sadly no.

    Can you do Kylo Ren next because the line in the movies about the whole “heir to Vader” is bullshit in my opinion because 1) In the last six trilogy Darth Vader/Anakin doesn’t have any heirs 2) If he did it wouldn’t be Kylo because Kylo would have left Vader into darkness to never try to redeem him and Kylo doesn’t know a goddamn thing about the man behind the suit we know Vader is Anakin Skywalker but the whole Disney trilogy gloss over him and never once mention Anakin beside Vader it like Luke never mention Anakin to Leia or Kylo before he became Darth Vader 3) If Vader did have an heir it is Luke because Luke grow up stories about Anakin literally his son, Luke was only person to see light in him and he redeem him finally Luke was the only person to be in his father funeral which is fitting because it means while the galaxy remember him as Darth Vader the greatest villain but to Luke he will be Remembered as Anakin a man, his father and his hero due to him saving Luke from The emperor. That is when Star Wars ends at episode 6 the return of the Jedi the sequel/Disney trilogy can go fuck itself people said prequels have problems but Disney prove sequels have issues problems as well.

    I think that there's an other important part to Finn that doesn't get explored and would fit Star Wars pretty well. The Star Wars films are always about family. That aspect could've been woven in easily with Rey, with her Isolation as you've described, but is also a theme for Finn. His "family" is the First Order, a cult. It's an abusive family only giving him everything he needs because he's a resource. Learning to recognise and heal that should be very important story. I think that's where Poe would've played a major part for Finn. Poe should've become a mirror for Finn showing how abusive the FO actually was. Poe as being part of a team instead of a resource. Poe as fighting from conviction instead of indoctrination, service without giving up identity and self.
    Oh, well, it's obvious we both thing the sequels are a huge pile of wasted potential.

    A lot of good ideas for what to do with Finn. I always thought the child soldier aspect was weird, though, when they could use clone troopers. In Clone Wars, the clones had chips in their heads to keep them loyal, and they could all simply be programmed to change loyalties--like to carry out Order 66. I initially though this is what Disney would do with Finn. Clone Wars had an episode where a clone trooper broke from his programming because the chip in his head stopped working correctly. Something to do with Jango Fett's DNA becoming less compatible with the chips the more they cloned him. And then that liberated clone trooper tried to destroy a cloning facility--and almost succeeded despite the fact that Jedi were trying to stop him.
    If the First Order had access to cloning technology, why not use it? There could be peace in the Republic, but the First Order shows up one day with massive clone armies. Like how Jedi were generals leading clone armies in the Clone Wars, the Knights of Ren could be generals leading clone trooper armies. Is cloning and chipping just so inefficient compared to kidnapping and brainwashing? They wouldn't have to steal or buy children. The First Order could have even figured out a way to clone force users, so the force trooper idea could still work. And Finn just wants to dismantle the entire project.

    • @DarthdYT
      @DarthdYT  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it's a really weird argument that the FO intentionally didn't use clones for some reason even though (I think it was Hux, maybe Kylo) said they were in favor of them. I guess stealing kids would be cheaper but way way more problematic.

    • @chriscollins2095

    From there, maybe Finn and Rey could have a disagreement during training where Finn understands why it was wrong to use Darkside powers whike Rey struggles to separate dark and light because of all her abandonment angst. The two get heated and settle their disagreement with an impulsive duel that triggers Luke's PTSD of Kylo and his own father, Anakin, testing his own moral fiber to act and atone for his mistakes with Kylo. It would all rhyme with Empire's training on Degobah and facing one's own darkside; Round 2 for Luke and his example shows them what it truly means to be Jedi.
