Great review. I did have a 2006 FJR, then changed to a K1600GT. Regretted it big time. I'm now back on an FJR, being a 2017 model, I love the 6 gear, LED cornering lights, slipper clutch and electronic suspection. Such a fabulous Sport Tourer. Take care.
I have the same bike / same color and love it. Just completed a 1000 mile tour of the Colorado Rockies and all I can say is that the experience was sublime. Apart from having superb mechanics, the bike is also a work of art, a real testament to great design. Thanks for all your instructive videos, they really come in useful. Perhaps you would consider a how-to on changing the handlebar position. This procedure has not been adequately addressed on the FJR forums and accordingly leads to a lot of confusion, even the manual suggests having the dealer do it. I went ahead and changed mine to a different setting and found the entire process to be quick and simple. I also discovered to my dismay that the dealer had installed the left and right bars at different settings! I agree with other negative comments about the stock seat. I changed mine to a heated Corbin with the companion Smuggler trunk all of which makes for a huge improvement in rider comfort. Another stock weakness was the light output from the rear brake light. The brake light only operates from one of the twin light housings rather than from each of them, consequently I installed a Custom Dynamics Knight Riderz sequential light bar to my license plate frame (which I am informed can be seen from the space station with the naked eye) I have this light bar on all of my other rides and it truly is a great investment in safety... www.amazon.com/Custom-Dynamics-Knight-Riderz-Light/dp/B002TR6WA4/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1410981476&sr=1-1
So you know, the FJR is not a bored out, tuned for torque R1, nor is it related to water craft engine. That engine in 2001 was built specifically for the new FJR 1300 bike. It's not even related to the old FJ1200 engine. Quoted from the project leader Hiroshi Komatsubara "To enjoy power from low to high engine rpm we needed a high capacity 4 cylinder engine. With the experience we gained during development of the R1 power-plant, we were able to design a 1300 cc engine which delivers high power output of 145 HP at only 8000 rpm and a breathtaking torque of 125,5 NM at 6000 rpm." While it's not bored out, the FZ1 (both gen 1 and 2) are 'tuned for torque' R1s. (Gen 1 FZ1 uses a 98-99 modified R1 engine. Gen 2 FZ1 uses a 04-06 modified R1 engine.)
Great bike, though. My father owns an 09 that he's selling and getting the 14 ES, just like you have, this spring. I look forward to riding it a bit, when he lets me.

Kind sir I beg to differ with the exhaust conversation. Coffman exhaust is $400 and the bike sounds absolutely perfect deep and throaty. It's a slip on dual exhaust and bruh.......baffles out......the power is there, with or without baffles. You definitely feel the power

There are these wings that you can add to the top of the windshield. It is only about half the width of the windshield, but it does magic. It makes your ride much more quiet.
I like your videos. Very helpful when doing maintenance. I have a 2019 ES and I absolutely love this bike. I traded my 2008 BMW in for the Yamaha and was the best decision I made.
There is a huge maintenance advantage on this bike, the recommended valve adjustment is every 24,000 miles. That's money and time in that owners pocket. This will be my next bike.

Brian/Bryan I love the quite sound of this bike and nothing sounds as good as a Yamaha anyway.
I really enjoyed watching this review, even though it is on an earlier model FJR. The 2016 model has 6 gears instead of five, and I like that feature.
Another guy from England calls himself Biker Paul, actually got a BMW K1600 GTL and then decided that he is happier with the FJR, and went to it. He likes the FJR more than it, and takes video of some really long cruises on his bike. I ve sat on one in the showroom, and I liked the riding stance a lot better than the Hayabusa. From the looks of things , the FJR will be my choice too. I am interested in long distance riding and I think it is a great choice for that.
The 16-20 models had a recall on the transmission. Second gear grenades. Make Shure the repair has been done before you buy.

FYI, this engine is not the same as the SHO/FZR supercharged 1800cc engines. It is nearly the same as the OLD MR-1 watercraft engine. They are very, very different.
I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate and enjoy your videos. I lost my job 15 months ago following my second massive heart attack but I hope to be back in action soon. I have the FJR as my number 1 choice when I am back on me feet.

You mentioned the lights and wished they had done the rear lights as LED. I noticed a small red reflector on back below the license plate... There is an after market LED strobe light you can put there (same size) and tie it to your brakes. It is a great accessory!!

You have my dream bike, but I'm on my first bike, a Suzuki SV1000s and got that and the license last year after thinking over it for 18 years. But i hope to buy a bike like yours, but the tax here in Denmark is sooo high, so it cost 48.000 USD as standard.

The gen2 has a red dashboard at night. It’s beautiful and has dial gauges. Gen 3 went to digital and a white dashboard.

Just bought a 2007 Burgundy FJR LOVE IT!!!
Been thinking about selling my Road King for something more sporty with more giddy up, but god I just cannot decide what to get. The FJR1300 is an obvious contender. The Concours 14 is a huge one too. I'm actually kinda thinking about a Hayabusa too but the chain drive (and less creature comforts in general) really turns me off, I enjoy not having to mess with anything lol. Regular gas is an absolutely HUGE selling point though! I can tell you that with a bike like this, I'm going to be going through a lot of it haha. I used to own a gen 2 vmax, and it is probably the bike with the best fit and finish I've ever ridden, I'm sure that carries over to their sport touring bikes too. God, I loved that bike lol. The 50 mile range just sucked the fun right out of it, though.
Anyway, enough rambling lol. I subbed for sure. Great video. This is one of the best reviews I've ever seen and might have sold me an FJR. I haven't watched your Concours video yet though lol.
@@SusanWillan I ended up getting a ST1300 since I found a good deal and it was one of the best bikes I ever had. Unfortunately Honda discontinued it but if they were still making them I'd have me a new one for sure.
I've still got the FJR on my radar though for sure, I'd recommend any sport touring bike to anyone. I think they're the best kind of bike personally
I totally disagree that there are not significant differences between the gen II and gen III. Having cruise control in itself is a reason to get this bike. I had an 06 with the power commander, traxxion suspension front and rear and I put 124k miles on that bike before selling it in 2013. I then researched the market and bought a street triple r because I wanted something light and fun. It was but I sold it after 8k miles and 6 months and bought a 2013 FJR. It is magnificent. Heated grips, excellent abs, adjustable windshield, cruise, traction control, runs on regular gas, 48mpg. The only things on this bike that need changing are the seat and the horn. The gen III is a much better bike than the Gen II and the gen II is a great bike. The nonsense about not having a 6th gear. There is so much torque that it is not needed and is one less shift to make. The FJR is the best sport tourer on the market, the best dollar for dollar motorcycle, it is fast, safe, reliable, fun, routine maintenance is easy. That is all I got to say. The sixth gear on the 2016 is not to address any torque issues, but to reduce engine revs at highway speed. I recently rode one and it is magnificent. The sixth gear is reason enough to buy a 2016.
By the way, I bought a tank cover for this bike , made in France. It comes with a tank bag that attaches to the tank cover and it is a great design.
Great Review! I´ve mounted the Beowulf slipons on my FJR. They are quite cheap and have a lifetime warranty. I love how the bike sounds with them. Yamaha FJR1300 with Beowulf Exhaust "(BAFFLES OUT)"

TwoWheelObsession It was after I saw that videolink that I decided to go for the Beowulfs. I don´t regret it. It comes with the street legal baffles, and they are very easy to remove.
I like your video. I currently own a 2010 gen2 Vmax which I love but thinking of making the jump to the fjr1300 after test riding one. I like all the creature comforts it has. Actually the paint is identical to the paint on my vmax, Yamaha calls it candy red and I dig it too. The fjr I test rode had a set of GYTR slip on pipes and I thought they sounded incredible without being loud in any way. I'll hold out until spring and try to get a good deal on a leftover 2014. Green would be a nice choice in color. Had a small car in red, same color as yours and had every cop in country pulling me over to see what basketball star that comes out to fish our waters and would ask me to step out of vehicle to talk only. So, your color has a recall in my mind to not get that color.
Although, it is a pretty color and a lot of people like them, but has a recall in my memory of that little Ford Festiva...
Solid review comparing the gen2 to the gen3. One of the best I’ve seen so far. My pockets aren’t deep enough for a gen3 right now but I just put a deposit on a low miles gen2. Which I actually think I prefer style wise. Yup! I’ve also left my wallet one or twice. LOL! And really appreciate the seat height to inseam aspect since I’m only a 29” inseam. But almost every bike I’ve owned over the last 30 years had me on my toes like a ballerina but at least I get an idea what to expect from the fjr. Cheers!
Bryan, excellent video, and beautiful bike! I finally got my Class M last year, and have been riding 750s. Not as wobbly as when I started out, but definitely not a "pro-tourer," either. What is your opinion on someone like me going for a sport-tourer, like the FJR? Is 1300cc something a greenhorn could handle, or am I better off staying around the range I'm already used to? I'm also concerned about operating costs, so when you say the tires don't last as long, that does give me pause. However, I only ride from May-September, as I'm in one of the northern states. Again, great video; thumbs-up and subbed!

Great review thanks.. I currently own a 07 gen 2, had her for two years and been all over Europe. Fantastic bike, I have been tempted to upgrade to the gen 3 but since mine is still in great condition and paid for, I'm not sure it's really worth it.

Hi There, thanks for the review. We are looking to upgrade from our ZX14 (ZZR1400 over there) to get a bit more comfort for longer trips. We rode the GTR1400 (Concours over there) yesterday, and have a ride scheduled for the FJR tomorrow. Just wondering if you can comment on the pressure on your wrists. That's the main thing I am trying to improve from the ZX14, and I noticed that the GTR still had a fairly pronounced lean forward. Do you notice much wrist pressure on the FJR? BTW, we are in Australia...should have mentioned that! The biggest drawback for the FJR is the black only color option, so I might have to wait and see what color appears for Australia in 2015...
I agree about the stock seat being uncomfortable after a 100 miles or so. We got the Yamaha comfort seat thrown in as part of the deal. We had our Pan European's seat redesigned for the same reason. I think that bikes nowadays whilst being much better than the old bikes (1970s and 1980s) come with ridiculously uncomfortable seats. You shouldn't have to spend more money on something so basic as a seat after spending best part of £14,000 on the bike! I guess I'll just have to see how the new bar ends alter the bike's vibration range. Re the colour of red mixed with a little silver? I personally think that it adds to the bike's beauty. It sets off the red and black nicely. We have a black tank cover rather than a silver one for the same reason. Would you fit a topbox to yours? Lynn won't ride with me (or will if absolutely necessary) without the topbox fitted as apart from the security of having it behind her, she enjoys the comfortable back rest to lean on. Re the riding position. When I first rode the FJR after owning the Pan European, I found that my hips ached a little because of the higher foot position on the pegs. The Pan has a lower ground clearance and therefore the foot pegs are lower. I still get my hip especially my left one aching at times but I think this isn't helped by my lack of physical fitness and our rather damp and cold climate. You spoke about the mirrors, well I agree that they're amongst the best out there. The Pan European's mirrors were superb too but I think the FJR's mirrors being higher up beat these. You mentioned about the 'blind spot' and how you don't need to look as far over your shoulders? Well since I fitted my Riderscan (www.huntercreate.com/ ) to the screen I have never looked back! Pun intended of course! I fitted mine with industrial strength velcro and yes it looks slightly odd, but it makes motorway riding (especially last year when on the German autobahns) much much safer. I can passively see everything that's around me at all times whilst keeping my eyes firmly ahead. Take a look at the website. I too have got the FJR taller screen. The only gripe I have with the FJR's weather protection versus the Pan European's weather protection, is that the Pan offers a much better coverage. Because we live in a colder climate than you Bryan, this is an issue. I found that my upper arms are exposed to the wind whereas on the Pan there was no problem there. Obviously if you sit on the Pan you can clearly see why this is. It's much wider than the FJR. Would I go back to the Pan? No. I still have affection for the bike (we've owned two ST1300s) and unless Honda pull their finger out and bring out another Pan or equivalent bike, I'm sticking with Yamaha. Yamaha have updated the FJR whereas Honda's Pan has remained the same since its launch in 2002. Well in closing Bryan, great review presented so well as usual. I too love to watch ride videos especially in parts of the World I will probably never be lucky enough to ride. Thank you for the effort you put into the videos. Aren't we bikers so lucky!!! Watched up to your tyre remarks. Great review. I noticed that you don't have your heavier bar ends on? I've ordered a pair for our FJR as I do suffer from numbness in my hands when riding at motorway speeds (70mph) for long periods. I've got Bridgestone 023-R's on the bike and they've started to square off after around 4500 miles. We do have twisties around here but to get there there is quite a bit of motorway riding to be done first. I've got a tank cover on ours and a topbox. Yamaha amazingly don't recommend you carry a topbox and panniers at the same time! What?????? This is a touring bike. Needless to say that I have ignored that. There are riders who have many 1000s of miles two up and fully loaded that have had no problems at all. It's bed time now so I'll watch the rest of the review tomorrow. Goodnight.

I have a 2014 fjr es just received my yamaha frame sliders opened the box and found out I have to cut my plastic to install them wish they would have told me that . Not happy with that.

Not sure if you still have this bike or if you've sold it by now but did this model have heated grips? I think you may have mentioned it. Love the color. I like my bikes visible. As far as the windscreen I would have recommended to you to buy an MRA clamp-on wind deflector. They're angle adjustable and always do the job right.
Linked braking I had on my 2006 Honda VFR800 Interceptor. Lots of people hated that but I absolutely loved it. Now it seems all the sport tourers use them.

I don't really agree on the exhaust part, i've got second gen FJR a year ago. Of course it came used, and the pretty sad part - drilled pipes. I wanted to get something better look and sound wise, so the choice fell on the pair of British Beowulfs. The price was under 400 bucks for a pair of brand new ones. They look almost the same as stock ( of course, better, since they are new ) they also sound much lower in a standard "legal" state. There's also a removable mufflers option, if you love or need (safety wise) more noise. The only bad thing i noticed is that the glued logo of manufacturer will come off pretty soon if you polish them too much. Love the bike tho, inline four works a bit strange at first, if you didn't encounter it before. The most shocking thing was a fuel economy. Since we don't have 87 in EU, i use 95 and get 45 to 50 mph on average. Of course im quite a calm rider, but that's still very strange for a 150 bhp 1300cc almost 10 year old machine. Looking forward to get one of the 2014 models. The biggest complaint i have is an absence of 6th gear. For a touring bike, that's a very big shame.

So you roll 270+ miles before you need to refuel. . . Not bad!! I was thinking about upgrading sometime in the near future and wasn't absolutely sure to what. Been hung up on Hondas since I own one and hadn't considered another make until recently. This model just may sell me, mostly because of the sportiness and tremendous space. But I have the inseam issue also. So unless I can drop it an inch I won't be comfortable and will likely ditch the idea altogether. I guess I could bring another pair of shoes besides bike boots, I don't know. But it is beautiful machine!!
Great video as usual. You should be able to reset mpg via the rubber reset button to the left of the tach. I don't believe it resets on it's own. It took me a bit to figure that out. Have you experienced any clicking noises on initial throttle input or any popping from the floating rotors?
Craig Fortner Oh I wasn't talking about resetting it, just how long it updates for the running average. Like every mile, 5, 10, etc. No noises.
Ah that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. This is my first FJR so I have been finding your how to videos very useful. Riding tonight I didn't notice any noise on initial throttle input. Rotors seem to get better with miles, have about 1100 on mine since 8/1.
I am thinking about buy this exact year...... I am only 5'8"....... will I have trouble flat footing this bike even with seat lowered?
hifi noob 2018 I would say no need to worry. I am 5'9 and ride a Honda Crossrunner. It's a tall bike and I could lower the seat height - but I don't. I enjoy the good view instead.

Hi Just want to say thank you for posting this video. I have also watched your your BMW 1200 RT and they are both very good. Was that the I92 you were riding as we have been to Davenport twice with our grandkids and like you I tried to find the small roads in our hire car .I currently ride a 09 BMW GS 1200 but if my wife was to give me permission I could e tempted to buy one of these.
I NEVER burn 87 octane in any of my bikes. The ethanol in most low octane gas destroys seals much more rapidly than normal. The additional cost at the pump is well worth it.

I'm thinking of switching from my super tenere to a new FJR. The super tenere whilst being a good bike isn't comfortable at all. I've had hemorrhoids all season long, I had to ride while standing up during long rides, I have to put my legs on the engine guards to stretch them, it sounds like a diesel, and there is no way you can get on this thing without climbing on it.
I want something smoother, more civilized, and easier to get on.
I'm a cruiser guy but I'll be damned, this sounds like a great bike to ride.

No. The si requires premium fuel. Google top tier fuel. It explains it. It's about the detergent levels. "Supposed to be better". In ohio premium means 93 octane. In California. It only goes to 91. For example.
Many engines require premium, it's simply a factor of compression ratio. The specific number considered 'premium' varies with altitude - the higher you are the lower the number. What exactly are you reading from Honda about any specific brand? I have never heard of anyone, period, with any problems based on a brand of fuel. I have used everything and usually fill at Sams.
Some brands also offer octane rated fuels over the 'premium' threshold, for people running even higher compression. Around our drag strip for example you can get 104 at the pump

I'll be commuting and light to med touring. I've checked out multiple HD's & Indians...just not my thing. Also looked at the new K1600B & really liked it.....but $26000 is a tough pill to swallow. Thx again for the review & input.

i am not an salty rider by any means.... i have only been riding for 3-4 years in montana so like 8 mos times 4 is like 2.5 years...
my 08 fjr is my 4th bike... starting from bikes i had after a 2 day class... 79 kawi 650 (for 3 months til it broke), 82 zuki gs1100, then a 92 kawi 750 bobber... now i have an FJR....
all of those bikes, i was wishing they could be more "all round" bikes...
79 kawi - i was thinking, wow this is top heavy, not reliable, revs really high on highway, but looks cool
82 gs1100, crazy fast in a straight line, fine on the highway but super hot in city, but, unreliable and just afraid of the maintenance to be honest... also it looked "ok"
92 kawi 750 bobber... looks so so sexy (still have it for city riding) its awesome for anything under 35 min. dropped it with damage only to the levers... its really freakin awesome and so low to the ground... til you hit bumps, or the rain (bobbers fling water on your back usually), or want to carry some stuff for travely (heavy backpack sucks), or want to give someone a ride (solo seat).
fjr1300... looks awesome, feels awesome, leans awesome... does everything awesome.... ya, after about an hour and a half on stock seat/bars you kinda wanna stretch out, but you are on a sports/tourer... you cant do those twisty roads on a cruiser like you can an FJR...
in brief... it all depends on where you live. if you have all long straight roads and like long trips like 95% of the time, buy a cruiser with a windscreen and some leg deflectors...
if you are 50/50 and /50? for fun/commuting/touring... FJR...
just learn your riding style because even a used FJR is still a large investment... learn what you are wanting... and also consider a used FJR and a used light >700cc bike to have even more fun with...
my FJR does everything i want... and one of these days i will put up a video of me messing around in a parking lot with not the best tires.

Love your review. BUT (and like Bertha, this is a big butt) I would definitely put the hex on using regular gas in these bikes. My 2013 manual states that the fuel requirements are 86 or higher using R+M/2 rating or 91 or higher using RON rating. I suppose it's up to the individual in whatever location he happens to live to sort that out. (In over 50 years of riding, I have owned many bikes, and this is probably the best bike with probably the worst manual) In any event, these bikes have a 10.8 to 1 CR and and considering the cost of replacing burnt valves or leaking head gasket's, using "regular"gas would seem to be false economy.
Do these engines have knock sensors? Your guess is as good as mine.

Great review, I'm thinking hard about getting on of these, I can't stand the flat matt blue color, is the ES model really a big, nice improvement over the A model? I would just get the grey A model unless you tell me the ES is a game changer and you use it all the time. Thank you very much for any help you can give me, making this buying decision.

I just got a '16 ES and love the electronic suspension. I don't note any benefit to the cornering lights. Have put 3,500 miles on it since May 1.

I have a 09 Honda st1300 and love it, but do notice a vibration at higher speeds from the engine and thinking like you mentioned fuel/ and tuning? I had an 06 and never noticed it before. I did enjoy watching this and wishing I was out riding but today is about 116 outside ya Phoenix sucks this time of yr. I did change the exhaust to Two Brothers and love the sound and no I bought them used on Ebay you will not see me spending 1000 bucks. Thanks for sharing.

The inner softbags do not come standard in Germany - cost around 100€
Hi Bryan. Checked out a 2010 FJR1300A at a dealer yesterday, then found your channel while searching for more about FJRs. Great videos...subbed. I love the looks and performance plus cool features of your new FJR, but since I will be riding solo, the 1300 is heavier than what I realistically need. Guess I'll be looking at the 1000cc sport touring bikes next. Current ride is a 750cc cruiser with marginal cornering ability, power, and cargo capacity for trips...but it looks good ; ). Any suggestions as I continue the new ride quest ?

To me, the fj09 leans way too heavily toward sport category in looks, performance, and riding comfort features. What I would like to see Yamaha produce is a scaled down FJR 1300. I do appreciate your reply though, and plan to test ride a BMW F800GT this weekend.
If you value cornering ability and cargo capacity, something like an FJ1300, ST1300 or the concours 1400 is just what the doctor ordered. They are kind of weighty but they are ROCK STABLE when you twist the throttle. I'm riding an REALLY OLD CBR1000F because funds are really tight now and I too value cornering ability. When my finances better one of the above mentioned bikes will be in my garage.

I did check out the Honda Mike. I ended up with a BMW R1200RT. Test riding many different machines changed my thinking about going for lighter bikes.

Has anyone test driven the FJR and then test driven the Honda ST 1300? I have just test driven a very clean low mileage original owner ST 1300 on an 85° day. Within 15 minutes I was roasting from engine heat..
I have heard for years that the FJR was too hot in hot weather to ride. Has anyone written the FJR and then written an ST 1300? Which one is hotter

Owned a 03 FJR and agree bike's spoiled by constantly looking for 'that' 6th gear! Not happy about the steering geometry always pulling in to corners not a natural easy ride, gearbox very clunky and wined in 1st and 2nd. Apart from these gripes bike performed faultlessly did Scotland but wouldn't want another. They're terrific looking machine which questions why Yamaha hasn't stayed ahead of the curve and seen off the competition.

Question..what would you suggest,, I have a chance to buy a 2017 fjr1300 es but it is white,,,now as far as I know they didn’t make white,, it isn’t the police white..I did a vin check and it says no accidents or salvage,, has a clean title,,the seller said the previous owner had it painted,,I’m afraid there was damage just never reported so of course it would not come up on the report..should I pull the trigger or walk away,, your honest opinion please
