I bought my 2003 FJR with about 3,000 miles on it in 2004. I rode it another 180,000+ miles with very, very few issues. Just stuff that normally wears out. The bike had a lot of life left in it when it was time to move on. It now lives at the Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama.

I had a 2007 FJR, unfortunately I sold it last year. There is a cable you can unplug for the windshield near the back of the right headlight, then it will not automatically go down when you shut the bike off. The windshield will stay in the position you have it set at.

I just looked at one of these earlier today.
A gentleman a lot like yourself has quite a few different bikes and hasn't ridden the FJR in quite a while. It has 53,000 miles and he told me he'd give me a good deal, just make him an offer.
Im thinking somewhere around 3000 dollars?

I asked about the year but we got talking about other stuff, he did say 2010 but he'd have to look for sure.
I'll find out when I go back, he lives about 5 minutes away.
The bike needs to be cleaned up, it's been sitting in his shop quite a while but it did fire right up.
Very cool guy, he's in his 70's and still rides a couple times a week. The bike he's been riding is an older Triumph. I'll be going on some rides with him and a couple other guys once I get the bike.
We live in a tiny remote town of about 800 people located on highway 12 in Utah. Lots of winding roads through the high desert and mountains.
People come from all over to ride here. It's funny seeing a group stopping here on their bikes and they all speak a foreign language!

He changed the clutch, brake pads, and the seals on the forks. It was not necessary but to have a peace of my mind. Today, I just came back from a tour of 220 miles. I've Valkyrie Touring, I ve Hayabusa, but no one of these is handling the road, and the curves like the FJR. Today, I came to the curve with 130 miles, and it took the curve easy. Starting with the '06 they installed a heat shield between tank and engine. This pretty much cured the heat issues on the Gen 2 as opposed to the Gen 1.
Make sure your bike has the silver heat shield intact.
I had an' 06 up till 2020. Then I bought a left over '19 from a dealer down in Mississippi, which I had delivered to me up in NY..... Have very little mileage on it due to 2 spine surgeries and lousy work schedules.
With the little mileage I have put on it, I can say it is very very nice.
I also put the T-REX cage and bag savers on it as well. Still have to mount my foot pegs.....
I don't normally drop my bike, but at 65 years old, the cage savers will reduce any damage AND make it much easier to upright bike.
Nice video.... Be safe out there.....

Yes. I have a 2019 and I did have to go thru the transmission recall. It broke my heart when I got the letter in the mail..... it was a brand new bike !!! This was a precautionary move by Yamaha to address a potential 2nd gear problem. To my knowledge, no one had any 2nd gear issues with the addition of another gear to make it a 6 speed . Probably cost Yamaha a fortune to do this big job.
Called my closet Yamaha dealer and they picked up the bike with a pick up truck equipped with one of those strap down auto loaders. Pretty neat..... The timing kind of worked out since I was having back /sciatica issues at the time. They had bike over 2 months, but I was in no hurry, due to health concerns and I just wanted them to do the job right !
When job was done, they called me up to tell me they had damaged the heli bars bracket when strapping down bike for transport. They paid for damage and replaced the heli bars, but that resulted in another 2-3 weeks of more waiting. That was taken care of and eventually got call to pick up bike. It worked fine and no oil leaks or any other issues. Unfortunately, I wound up having to go for another back surgery last year which meant the bike would be sitting again.
Got the bike in the summer of 2020 and I only have less than 600 miles on it !! Crazy.....
I will be getting back on it, but I'm a little nervous to do so.... so far.
I believe the 16,17,18, and '19 had the transmission recalls. No issues or problems I have heard of since. I believe the 2020's and later were fixed at the factory before being sold......

What's the consensus about reliability? Are there common problems with older models, to look out for?

    • @herbiesgarage681
      @herbiesgarage681  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you were to ask FJR owners they would tell you that these bikes are stone cold reliable. I had a bad experience on mine when I first bought it and had to replace the engine, I don’t believe it was a fault of the engine but a fault of the previous owner. It is believed that the previous owner changed out the cam chain tensioner and didn’t secure the chain and the timing slipped eventually causing valve/piston damage. But what I can tell you is that my replacement engine is perfect, I’ve gone through the valve adjustment and everything is spot on and I would take this bike anywhere anytime. I believe the FJR is a solid bike that is safe, fun, fast and reliable. If you were in the market for one I would just say ask a lot of questions to the owner as far as maintenance goes. As with any bike if maintenance isn’t done properly bad things can and do happen. As far as common problems, the only ones I’m aware of I mentioned in the video. The heat off of the engine and the slight off idle throttle response on the 06-08 models. It comes on very quick making it a little hard to ride slow and into corners. Ivan performance makes a flash that is supposed to clear that up as well as improve other things as well. That flash is $350, so if you look into these years just talk the buyer down so you can purchase the flash and you’d be all good. Good luck, if you have any more questions feel free to ask, thanks

I own an FJR 06 model it's done 166000kms iv had to replace the ignition switch the barrel where the key goes in wore out i had it replaced 2 Mths ago about 2 weeks ago my high beam light comes on when started the blinkers stay on but dimly lit no headlights working no screen that usually moves up and down the only way I'll have all my lighting working is to raise the screen up to the maximum height and it's all systems go otherwise it will start but my blinkers will flash quickly but stay on but no headlights only the high beam light stays on like I mentioned ITs going back to the shop where the ignition switch was fitted hopefully they can get to the bottom of the problem iv heard it's a problem with the Gen 2 from 06 through until 09 spider bite there saying or the other way is getting to an automotive electrician to be checked for the problem
