I rebuilt clutches a few times decades ago. First was with an engine rebuild I did when I was 8 or 9 years old. Next one was at 13 years old. They were so easy back then on Honda 90 motorcycles. Then at about 14-15 I rebuilt a clutch for a neighbor who had an old BSA cycle. I have never done a clutch plate/spacer replacement since. I see they over complicated it as engineers seem to enjoy doing. I just bought a 2007 FJR1300 and watching your videos I realize I have a lot of work to do on my beast as I bought it with 39,521 miles on it 3 weeks ago. Thank You for educating this old man on what I need to do.
I'm thinking about getting an FJR1300 and I came across this video by chance. Really interesting presentation with the information you need and no other filling that other guys use which makes theirs boring. This is excellent - great job!
I bought a used 2013 FJR and found your channel, and I’m glad I did. Your how-to videos are very well done and extremely helpful and informative. I love your down to earth approach, and the inclusion of things to watch out for that a shade-tree amateur really benefits from. Thanks so much and keep up the great work!

Haha, feel ya!;)) whenever I have a courtesy bike from the garage, it feels like I want to squeeze the clutch lever into the handlebar...;)) I commute around Rotterdam, so 8 miles of traffic is a weekly thing for me, and after almost 3 years on a 2009 and 2013 FJR, I don't feel it anymore. When I'm filtering for 1 hour+ continuously, then I wish I could stop. I think the worst was about 2 hours of filtering from Charleroi Airport, Brussels, Belgium, back to Rotterdam. The highway lanes are a lot narrower here than in the US. It feels like after watching all those biker videos. Thanks for bringing up the subject!
I have just completed this little project on my '08. Here are a few tips and tricks and how it turned out for me; 1. Be careful making up your parts list. Compare the fiche carefully. An '08 is slightly different to a '14. I bought some parts I did not need and had to go back for a few more. They are all special order so cannot be returned. 2. You can actually buy a proper clutch basket holding tool for just £7.50 on eBay. Or even make one from 2 pieces of steel hinged in the centre using a bolt with each end cracked at 90 degrees. I bought one but still had to modify it by bending the handle outwards in order to clear the engine case. 3. Best to squeeze bearings in using a vice, not a hammer. I wrecked my first set using the hammer technique. When I first fired up, I found it difficult to find neutral. I guess the plates were still a bit sticky but that eased following a few miles on the road. So a groan turned into a smile. Of course it still 'clonks' heavy into first but that's just what FJRs do. The clutch pull certainly feels lighter than before. I measured around 7kg before and about 5.5kg now. I can't be exact because it is not a linear progression. I think there is also a slighter shorter pull so I was able to move the lever adjuster. The slipper makes downshifts so much smoother which is rather nice. Even if you go for it way too early, there is non of the harsh jolt of before. So it's a nice mod and I'm pleased with it.
1 - Sorry but looking at the microfiche, the only difference is the '08 doesn't use the retaining ring. You may have simply misread. 2. Just hold the rear brake. No tool actually needed. I found that out post install of course! Hammering bearings in is no problem - it's the user, not the tool ;)
Not quite. On an ’08 the ‘Plate, Seat’ and ‘Spring, Clutch Boss’ are prefixed 3P6 so I needed to replace them with the correct 36Y prefixed parts and also the retainer ‘Ring Set’. Also I mistakenly ordered a new set of ‘Plate, Clutch 2’ parts 2H7-16325-00 (6 of them). I did not need to as I could have used the old ones. So just a word of warning to others to be careful because it’s easy to mess up. And a dope slap for me!
No. I took the new prefix to mean they were different parts. I read somewhere the prefix refers to a code for the bike in which the part was first used. In this case 3P6 v 36Y.
+Mark333032 part number changes can be for absolutely any change even the coating used. The size and function of those parts has never changed. They would have worked just fine.
Totally worth while mod. My clutch forearm is bigger than my jack off forearm from sitting in Atlanta traffic 5 days a week for an hour on an old zx12r. People think I'm a lefty and I'm not.
I have a '16 x diavel and '17 fz09. I didn't notice the light clutch pull on the x but I sure like the slipper clutch on both of them. Good video. You're a smart guy.

Update 75k miles, plates are worn and burnt so doing clutch work today bought new OEM plates and found that item #8 Partszilla RING SET 2H7-16385-00-00, shown at 24:00 on your video, had been destroyed and pieces are all in the clutch housing, so now buying the clip and additional plates behind it, cleaning everything up and going with new oil since I can't trust that that paper clip of a ring set is not anywhere else in my oil. Wish me luck.
I'm confused as to why you can't reuse the 7 PLATE, CLUTCH 2 Item #: 2H7-16325-00-00 My 2007 say I have 7 of them and you need 6 for the 2017 clutch but they appear on your microfische. Could I not delete these 6 from my shopping cart? Thanks, Really great video I'm going to do it on mine.
Great videos! I have pretty big hands so I don't have any issue with the clutch pull weight, even though I am a two finger guy. However, if I did this but put back in the original springs, so I kept the manual clutch lever pull the same but with the additional engine assist, do you think I could use just about any synthetic automotive engine oil I wanted without worrying about clutch slip?

Nice video, & good explanations. I own a 2012 FJR that I bought new & for my style of riding, I prefer the standard clutch. When I hit the twisties (we have an abundance of them here in BC Canada) I gear down as I come into some tight stuff rather than apply the brakes. A quick "blip" of the throttle when between gears does ,much the same as a slipper clutch. Maybe when I get old I'll move to a bike with a slipper clutch, but for now, even in stop & go traffic the resistance on my clutch isn't a problem. Thanks for the demonstration, well done!
Wow, this is one quality video, well done. Looks like the switch to new FJR wasn't too wise (from gen1 ar 2), but, looking at all the "revision2" upgrades, it's getting pretty worth the money. I wonder if there's something more coming :-)
Awesome job making this detailed vid Bryan, thank you. My '07 FJR is about to hit 300,000 miles, (around 200k miles on the original) and with around 100k now on a low-mileage replacement engine. I figure this upgrade should be a welcome improvement. I was wondering if you happen to know how this upgrade works with the Gen 1 clutch slave cylinder, since that's a mod I've already got on my Gen 2 to help ease the clutch pull a bit. It is my understanding that Gen 2.5, 3 and up FJRs already run the Gen 1 clutch slave cylinder right?
I just did this on my 2007. Everything went great but like Brian I had a oh crap moment. I was removing the clutch plates with a magnet when i pulled the concave washer out. Thats when I realized the 2007 does not have the small wire retainer
@@alaskanmutt Thanks for highlighting the Spring Clip on the '07 (same as my FJR). Can I take this to mean that you could re-use the #17 Clutch plate from your '07 and are happy with that?
Hey Bryan. You are slowly turning your 2014 into a 2016.:-) Do you think a 2016 engine could slip into a 2005 frame and connect to the electrical system.

For that part where u need that special tool. I'm thinking just stepping on the rear break while in gear and on its center stand will give you enough gold to undo that big nut. Maybe I'm wrong tho. Just a thought

@@THE-APEX Thanks I found it back when I posted the question I had to wait months and months as a lot of the parts were ex Japan 🇯🇵 and on back order. Eventually I did the job, well worth the wait

My Bad....apologies.......... I just read that you circled the parts in Red that I need to order. Though, is this a parts list from a 2016 (Yamaha FJR1300 ES FJR13ESGC )
Hi Bryan !! the parts are from the 2016 model right ? can i put this update on my 2006 ? if yes,all the parts to change are shown encircled in red right ? thanks and congrats again for your very good videos
For 2016 there are 3 parts for ref# 17 . 1 of the 3 parts is from the 13-15 that you re used- 2h7-16325-00-00.If I want to use the part# that would give me the lightest clutch pull would it be the 2h7-16324-00-00 or the 47x-16324-00-00? Thank you. Bifffy
Hi Mike, Great Video... well explained. Do I need to order only parts item 2 through to item 31 on Bike Bandits clutch parts list for a (Yamaha FJR1300 ES FJR13ESGC ) Is that correct? My bike is a 2013.
Has anyone had success with the slipper clutch on a 1st Gen FJR? I’m rebuilding my clutch this winter and am considering this modification if someone can confirm it fits with the 1st gen.
Did you ever find out if this mod can be made for a GEN I bike? I have a 2004 that needs clutch work and I'd really like to retrofit it with the slipper clutch.
Your right. I watched a bunch of videos yesterday and it was not you. Got you confused with Science_biker doing a review of his. After a while it all bleeds into one long video. Lol
I've been wanting to get smother shifting and came across your video. Great in-depth tutorial! I do all my own maintenance and figure I can tackle this. I have a 2005 ABS and was wondering if the 2016 parts list will work in mine. I compared the parts list of the 2016 (BikeBandit) to the 2005 and they seem to be the same. Is this a true assumption?
Thanks for the confirmation. The bike has been "down" the last couple of days while I was changing the generator cover, oil change, exhaust swap, and switching out the HIDs for LEDs. I can't afford another downtime right now but I'll definitely keep this upgrade in mind and may get to in next month.

Is there any way I could get the list of parts for the clutch conversion please
Another bike I own has a slipper clutch and I like it, so keen on exploring the option of the conversion
Regards Greg
He has a link in the video description

Thanks I found it back when I posted the question
I had to wait months and months as a lot of the parts were ex Japan 🇯🇵 and on back order. Eventually I did the job, well worth the wait
Will this also work on my 1st Generation (2004)? Thanks in advance!
it should Pete but double check the microfiche, I did not verify it for differences to Gen II/III
Thanks for the fast reply!
Great videos as usual, keep it up.
As said, bike on the ground-top gear-foot on rear brake for loosening clutch centre nut.
Now that you done the upgrade would you recommend it, is it that much of an improvement?
Yep I love it
My Bad....apologies.......... I just read that you circled the parts in Red that I need to order. Though, is this a parts list from a 2016 (Yamaha FJR1300 ES FJR13ESGC )
Great job as usual Byran. Out of interest can this conversion be done on the Gen 2 bikes ?.

Hi Bryan !!
the parts are from the 2016 model right ?
can i put this update on my 2006 ?
if yes,all the parts to change are shown encircled in red right ?
thanks and congrats again for your very good videos
Yep :)
Thank you. Bifffy
Thank you have installed no problem
How long does this take a Yamaha garage to do you think?
Hi Mike, Great Video... well explained.
Do I need to order only parts item 2 through to item 31 on Bike Bandits clutch parts list for a (Yamaha FJR1300 ES FJR13ESGC ) Is that correct?
My bike is a 2013.
That was an awesome mod! Great tutorial
+Bikers Quest Thanks!
Buongiorno, ha un video dove si vede come fare per sostituire il tenditore della catena di distribuzione?
Ed anche la catena di distribuzione?
Did it not fall in the oil when you first took the case off? I swear I heard something plop into the oil.
+Crana No, that was a locator pin - and the ball came out far past that point after the end pushrod was removed.
Damn you, Im going to have to do this now.. maybe parts are cheaper 7 years later...? LOL
Wouldn't applying the rear brake with keep the wheel from turning?
Good thing that’s in the description
Pro caliber is where Shawn Smoaks works
I wish i could upgrade my 2014 Fjr like you did😒
in windows I cant find the description. funny how you move your hands.... you did not provide a part number list...
For the love of God! Take the fairing off and Use a bowl to soak 🤣 Great video!
And do you want to sell me the extra parts you have? Thank you Bifffy
Wait, I thought you said in one of your earlier videos that if they did change the clutch that you weren't going to upgrade? Lol
You thought wrong, I said no such thing.
+David Morgan Yep!
Thanks for the confirmation. The bike has been "down" the last couple of days while I was changing the generator cover, oil change, exhaust swap, and switching out the HIDs for LEDs. I can't afford another downtime right now but I'll definitely keep this upgrade in mind and may get to in next month.
Bryan ....
Will this work on an 02?
Yes
One day you should do a subscriber meetup and ride
+Mrapplesauce96 Oh I will - but I need MANY more subscribers first. I do meetups (HERFs) for my other channel CigarObsession :)
+TwoWheelObsession You are actually the closest motovlogger to me, i live about two hours south of you, and i may be able to show up to a cigar meetup
