  • Today I'm setting up a NEW turtle tank for Hoku, my diamondback terrapin. He's getting an upgrade from his 29 gallon to a 40 gallon breeder aquarium. I've been waiting to set up a new tank for him for AGES, and I'm so glad that I finally got to do it. Be prepared for a lot of timelapses hahaha. For links to the equipment I used in my tank, check out my Turtle Kit! ⤵️

I have a 40 gal & a 20 Gal turtle tank. When it comes to a water change, I bought a pump on AMAZON which will make the water change much faster. It takes less than 5 minutes to make a complete water change in the 40 gal. The pump costs less than $10.00 & it makes the job much more pleasant. My big tank with the COOTERS is a problem. When I bought them a matched brother & sister team, they were the size of a quarter. 10 months later there shells are 7 inches. My 2 painted guys in the 20 gal are also growing real fast. I 'm looking to get a 120 gal for all of my kids. Thanks. John

Use egg crate to make a basking area it fits perfect along the rim that’s what I used for my red ear slider in his tank. I have the same tank as you and it worked really well

I love this video! You are so entertaining and your animals are so cute! I don’t know if you are aware of this but a certain TH-cam family recently bought a tortoise on an impulse buy at petsmart. They can barley tell the difference between a turtle and a tortoise and yet they bought a tortoise for there 6 year old daughter! The tortoise lives for fifty years or more and they placed in a huge flower pot outside stuck some freeze-dried vegetables in there and called it good. And you are exceeding the expectations (I know you have terrapins and turtles not tortoises)
Thank you so much for continuously educating us on reptiles, amphibians and caring for our pets overall.

I haven't experienced any issues...honestly, the bulb should not be getting so hot that it could melt plastic. If it gets to that point it likely means the bulb is too strong.

You should really consider putting a backing (like black cardboard) to block some of the aquarium sides so the turtles isn't constantly trying to escape. That's what that pawing at the glass is. They don't understand that it's a transparent solid material. They will constantly keep trying to swim past.

Carlee Kennedy you could probably make it work for a musk turtle. They stay very small. I would only recommend one musk turtle (either stinkpot or Razorback) and a great filter (maybe a combo of a canister filter and a ziss bubble bio filter) to keep your water quality up.
