  • Today I’m reacting to my subscribers’ turtle tanks! You sent in photos of your pets’ enclosures at home - now I’m sharing them with everyone else in the hopes that they can be inspired with some turtle setup ideas. I was so amazed at the variety of tanks that were sent in and could not wait to share this video with you! There were SO MANY more that I didn’t get to include in this video, so be sure to leave a thumbs up and a comment if you’d like to see more of this as a series.
    Please remember that all opinions and suggestions shared in this video are only based on my own personal knowledge and experience and are just that - opinions and suggestions. You’re welcome to take the advice or leave it. I just ask that you remain kind, constructive, and positive in the comments. Thanks! 💚

      My turtle tank is right beside my sofa too! I love to watch Fred (female yellow bellied slider) swim around and of course beg for food, lol. She thinks she should eat all the time. Oh, I got Fred when she was very tiny and did not know what sex it was. As she grew I knew I had named her wrong, but all my friends know her and call her Fred. So it is Fred, the female turtle.

I am planning on getting Leo some more fake plants because his other plants fell apart when I was cleaning them and his other decoration that he had scratched him so I had to take it out so he didn’t get hurt again. I haven’t been able to go out and get some decorations but I am going to get him some. Also he’s been doing great with the rocks and all he does is dig and move them around.

    • @bananaboy8919

      If your getting a baby it will be fine but if your getting an adult you could use some rocks

    • @ritesha8050
      @ritesha8050 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah but I like the diy more. When the turtle climbs the suction cup basking area , it tends to move and this might scare the turtle. Which species are you getting?

    • @lukemcintosh6886
      @lukemcintosh6886 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ritesh A I don’t know yet but most likely either a red red eared slider, a yellow belly slider, or an eastern painted cuz those are common especially the painted in my area.

    • @jaimeperalta3331
      @jaimeperalta3331 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d recommend you get a eastern or southern painted turtle since those stay the smaller and that way you can give them more space in your home... RES get twice the size. And making one yourself with eggcrate is the best way to go.. that way it will be good for them as hatchlings and bigger and they won’t sink ... they’re also easy to make and your turtle can have a full portion of land to walk around and explore.. that’s what I did for my southern painted hatchling

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      there's nothing particularly wrong with suction cup basking areas. The only thing is that if you're getting a larger turtle, it could potentially sink it - in which case you'd want to either make like an eggcrate basking area for inside the tank or use an above tank basking area :) but for babies they usually work great.

    🍿 Stephanie, Pablo, Joey, and that last submission, were soo wonderful ❤, beautiful, and well thought out with the turtles well being in mind, with their size and species requirements, ect. But the rest seemed to be really lacking in even the basic requirements :(
    I really love the positivity on this channel
    (I love this channel ❤) , but i kinda wish you were a tiny bit more harsher maybe about the basic things, like heating/ lighting/ basking area/ enclosure size.
    I feel like one of the main reasons people just don't tend to have those things is because they think its secondary, and not something they should have first, ( before they even get the turtle) and it isn't optional, -the brand or type of product they use, is of course their choice, but it needs to meet the basics.
    Enrichment is just as important (extremely important) but its more of a secondary concern rather than the first. I really wish more people cracked down on that sorta thing, because i don't think those people mean to do it on purpose and are just unaware of it. But its not them who suffers the consequences, the turtle does, they chose to bring that turtle home, which means they are solely responsible for it's wellbeing.
    (because that turtle cannot care for itself in that person's home like it would in the wild with a very wide variety of options, like choosing where to bask, what food to eat, where to swim, ect, their turtle depends on their choices for its health and happiness)
    Aesthetic really needs to be put aside, and do what the turtle would most likely want/ need the most. The bar for turtle care seems to be set really low, and i know different species have different requirements, so different habitats, diets ,ect. But a lot of the turtles i see with needs not being met seem to be the similar common pet turtles, who share similar care, i just find the situation really unfortunate, and see/ read a lot of misinformation being spread. Don't get me wrong though you're a wonderful advocate for turtles and the information/ knowledge you share and work you do for turtles is amazing, I just wish maybe you would maybe be a tad bit more critical about certain things.
    I apologize if this comment came off as insincere/ offensive in any way, but if you've read it all the way through, thank you, i appreciate you and all the work you do to help turtles. 🍿

    • @RioCahyadiDrayka
      @RioCahyadiDrayka 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      No, as long you reach the appropriate temperature on the basking area, the distance of the lamps could be nearer or farther from the basking area.

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      no, like the commenter above said, what is important is the temperature of the basking area. Although I would go much further than a foot because UVB gets less effective the further away it is.

    Agree on the water level for Musk turtles, had my Razorback musk in a 55 gallon filled to the top since she was a very small hatchling (5 years now). I started out with driftwood leading from the bottom to the surface and away from the heavy flow of the Fluval FX6 filter so if the turtle is ever tired it will float towards the bottom of the driftwood ramp and can crawl to the surface without struggling. I did that as a precaution but Musk's are great swimmers (not as good as real aquatics like my two large sliders but still plenty capable in deep water).and she's now huge. So in short, make sure Musk's have something they can crawl up from the bottom to the top and you can fill the tank with water all the way. Musk's also breathe through their tongues so can stay underwater for quite a long time, not forever but quite a while.

    I really, really, really want an above-basking area. Since I can't upgrade the tank size yet, the best thing I can do is give my turtle some more swimming space...
    20 gallons sucks, man.

      Brenda Abrams Yea. Don’t take the animals from the wild. It was a big move from her natural habitat so that might be why. A lot of stress for her.

    Hey, just wondering what I should do if my red eared slider jumped off a one story building? I checked him and felt his shell and there was no damage whatsoever. Also, I am a 12 years old kid and my family is short on budget like 10 bucks short so what should I really do? And my turtle is 6 inches and lives in a 5 gallon bucket.... I feel bad for him or her so I'm going to use my money that I got for my birthday to get him or her a 30 gallon tank. Thank you The Turtle Girl!!!

    P.s. This will be "Her" 1st personal tank, and I really want to make it amazing. I know I have said soo much already--i have a 65 breeder aquarium for fish; any thoughts on interior design and setup is greatly appreciated!!! You Rock😊

    I have a turtle in a glass tank. He’s a red eared slider and is about six, but on the small side. He has rocks at the bottom and a floating rock but he never uses it. I’m not sure how many gallons the tank is, I’m a kid and we rescued him when I was 4. My parents say his enclosure is fine, but I might convince them to get a tub. What products do you use? (Lights, suggested tubs, rocks/sand, live/fake plants, maybe fish, water heater, etc.) Also, I hate to keep asking, but he has pellets. Is that okay for all of his food?

      Just so you know, my cousins won him at the boardwalk and they fed him twice a week. My dad took him home.

      Kaitlyn T I personally have a red eared slider and mine is 3 years old. She’s HUGE! So if your RED is six and is small, I would assume that your turtle was malnourished (like you mentioned) and didn’t have any proper lighting in the early stages of its life. This happened to my cousins friends who didn’t take care of his turtle properly :( Pellets are fine for turtles! Just make sure you also feed them a variety and fruits and veggies! Also for your tub there’s many videos of TH-cam that could help you, but my suggestion would be just make sure the plastic doesn’t break due to water pressure. Good luck :)

      Yes, pellets are a good staple food. You can occasionally offer vegetables and treats like earthworms as well.
      I've got quite a few vids on setups, and here's a link to the equipment I use. (affiliate links, so you support the channel if you order through them :D)kit.co/the_TurtleGirl/aquatic-turtle-kit

    My turtle isn’t getting on his dock. The temperature is good but I think it’s because he’s not used to swimming cause the pet store had him in shallow water and there was not many docks. Or maybe because I just got her and she is just shy and doesn’t wanna be exposed. Should I put her on the dock so she can get her warmth or hope that she starts docking?

    Hi, is there a certain size or age we're you can have a turtle in a tank full of water? Because yesterday we bought our first turtles and I'm kind of worried that if I put my turtles in a tank full of water they can drown, right now I just have them in small container with enough water were they can stick their head out and breath but really they can't even swim, I will appreciate your answer and thank you 😊
