Commenting before watching: Okay Buddy. You taught me chicken nuggets, chicken wings, bacon, burger patties... and now tuna? The one thing I miss so much? Dang! Without having watched this, I'm really exited!
Oh, and maybe just as a small feedback: you made me experiment so much with new ingredients and fake meat, that now I come up with my own ideas (as a german it's mostly spreadable sausage, but still...). Even started selling vegan sausage to my coworkers.
Thanks for your content. I really like the way you approach recipes :)

I had a feeling you were going to use jackfruit in the tuno. I love that idea. Normally I just mash chickpeas, but it reads more like an egg salad sandwich. You definitely elevated that recipe.

I also miss the “live” talking - the voice over although it sounds better in terms of audio - it feels more disconnected - I just love your quirky & upbeat personality that comes out when you’re speaking live - although I imagine it must be sooo much easier to do voiceover. You’re an amazing TH-camr - in the end - do what’s best for YOU!

For my “tuna” salad I use the Fly Vegan jackfruit crab cake recipe. Instead of making Pattie’s and frying. I put the mixture on a sandwich. It is amazing.

@@SauceStache I like the voice overs, and I noticed the style and humour that you put into it. It seems cool to me, so I think that others will like it more.
1 thing, though, about the taste test is that the audience probably want the *authenticity* of both of your reactions. I imagine that by some official metric, voiceovers during the tasting will resonate well, but I think that a simple raw video of the taste test is a better long term investment. The raw look is like inviting us into your actual home, and not scripting a dialog or reaction.
The short term benefit of an unedited taste test is that you don't have to set up a lot of lighting, if it isn't already there, and the editing is minimal.
I'm not an expert. I'm just a guy, that cheers in your corner. I think that most/all won't complain if the videos never changed or if the videos went back to the old ways.

I think something that probably added to the tuna-eyness of your recipe was adding some of the aquafaba to the mixture, because it contains a very similar flavor to the juice from canned tuna. I can't wait to try it because I miss tuna so much.

Can’t wait to try your version! I have tried the popular vegan versions and find I have to rinse them very well before using to help remove the bit of funky taste and to me, there is something off-putting about the liquid they sit in. Rinsing and draining has improved them tremendously for me but, I love the idea of doing a bit of dehydrating on some jackfruit and the combo with the chickpeas. I have missed Jersey Mike’s for SO long and you nailed everything with how they prepare their veggies! I will definitely be making your version of the pepper spread - could tell it was amazing.

Back in the day, The Urban Peasant was on PBS. He passed away some time ago. (I think that's where I watched him when I was an older teen going into college. I'm 47 now.) He is where I learned that the smaller the food chunk, the more flavor it has. I have (obviously) held onto that nugget of wisdom for like 30 years, lol. So odd this came up today, as I just did Sweet Potato Soul's Chickpea/carrot tuna salad 2 days ago. I had to double the batch of "dressing," for the 15 oz canned organic garbanzos & it was about 1 cup of shredded organic carrots. I am in love with Minimalist Baker's aquafaba mayo, so I used that latest batch. I did a combo of the kelp flakes you use, Bragg's seaweed & spice blend, & actual kelp powder. I put most of it in with some GF penne ( from Aldi's), & organic frozen peas. Then I whipped up a batch of It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken's Sharp Cheddar to finish off the casserole. It's good, but I think it lacks the full tuna-y flavor. I'll have to pick up some more jackfruit next grocery run to give this a whirl. Although, I think I might be doing that pepper stuff tomorrow, lol. (P.S. thanks for the recent email to your Patreon supporters!)

I was addicted to that cherry pepper relish and I miss it! I've never seen them anywhere--supermarket or farmers's market. P.S., but trick for "tuna" salad is using a 15 oz can of drained artichoke hearts (in water) and chop up. Cheaper, easier to find than jackfruit, and actually tastes nicer. Still has that brineyness, texture feels close, and really delicious!

I just bought a few ingredients to experiment with the other day, including xanthan gum, so I will just assume you're reading my mind.

You should try the Garden Gourmet Sensational Thun-Visch - it's a German product and tastes almost exactly like real tuna. I was very surprised. Made with pea proteine.

I've never seen red pepper relish, but I have a hunch that it will soon become the top of my food pyramid

You have to try the gardein tuna Mark! It's so similar in taste, texture and smell of tuna.

I'm sure you have a list of planned videos, but I was just thinking of rotisserie chicken. Think my neighbor had some, idk I could smell it. Anyway, vegan rotisserie chik'un?
Maybe have an edible sculpture using the faux bones? 😁

Don't mind the new format. Keeps things fast and easy. Adding Jackfruit to the mix is inspired man!

About the brand: We love Loma Linda's Big Franks - best veggie hotdogs we've ever tried! And their FriChik is really awesome, too... But the Loma Linda Tuno, eh, not so much. I took at little taste of it and didn't even want to make it into a Tuno salad sandwich. I make ChunaSalad using half mashed and half whole chickpeas, mayo, celery and Tarragon!

  • @hannahrl
    @hannahrl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

my one thought was, does the Loma Linda not already have a kelp element to make ocean-y flavor, so maybe leave out the kelp from that one? I'm sure the jackfruit/chickpea one is way better tho.

Is there anything I can substitute for the kelp powder? Also would love a video dedicated to school those lunches for vegetarians/vegan kids! My niece decided to go vegetarian (she just doesn’t eat meat but not vegan). We are looking for ideas for bag lunches that give more variety than pb and j.

I stopped eating canned tuna cause no matter what the can says it’s not sustainably sourced so an alternative is welcome since I used to eat tuna sandwhich two or three times a week

To anyone who's made this recipe: how much vinegar did you use? I didn't hear a measurement in the video but it looked like a solid 1/2 cup of each and that seems like a lot to me. Thanks!
