Horror movies are something I could talk about for hours, and I've seen most of the movies on your list. So for the sake of discussion (and just because commenting helps with the algorithm and your videos deserve WAY more views than they have right now) I'll give a couple of my thoughts on each:
Green Room: This is a really great one that truly sticks with me. I think the main reason for why that is would be how incredible the execution of it is versus the simplicity of the concept. There's something really impressive and enthralling about a horror movie where the main premise sounds like it should last about 20 minutes but ends up giving you an hour and a half or more of non-stop captivating suspense and action. It's funny though that I really don't remember it being as especially gory as you mention, I think because by now I am just way too desensitized 😅.
    I'd give it a solid A.
The Invitation: I know that this is a frequently referenced darling of the r/horror subreddit, but personally I just don't agree with all the laud and honor. For transparency's sake I should mention that when I watched it I was specifically in the mood for a much more dumb, visual slasher kind of horror movie, and I recognize that this movie is very purposefully not anything like that at all, so it would be unfair to judge it in that light. Despite that, I've tried to give a fair shake to all the praise that it garners, and this movie just doesn't cut it for me. I found the plot to be overly simple and thin with nothing beyond the respectable performances of the cast to dress it up any more. It mostly hinges on one major point that felt immediately predictable within the first ten minutes, and then ends with an extra twist that almost rivaled the film 'Remember Me' in how shoehorned in and unearned that twist actually came off as.
Because of the redeeming caliber of the performances and some of the dialogue, I'd give it a C-.
Gerald's Game: Ultimately I agree with you that this was one of the best horror flicks of 2017. It's incredibly difficult to adapt to the screen any text material so psychologically driven and internal (especially something by King, a true master of horror and suspense literature that hinges on the psychology and internal workings of its characters), but Mike Flanagan did it here with true aplomb. I think something that's great about this film is that it really is solidly a horror film, but it presents the majority of its most affecting bits in a way that still leaves it accessible to those who normally can't stomach a traditional horror film (except for a single especially gory scene that serves its climactic purpose well, and you could close your eyes through if need be). It approaches (and achieves) its goals as a horror movie in a way that genuinely sticks around without leaving you with a week of nightmares. And as you highlighted, Carla Gugino's incredible performance here really cannot be overstated.
    I'd give it an A-.
The Lodge: This is one that I haven't seen but has been on my list to watch for some months now. I'm excited to get to it.
May: This is a movie with a strange beauty that exists in equal measure to, yet in no way in spite of, its truly horrific elements. The noticeably adroit direction of this film brings to life something so sappy and disturbing, and it does so in such a sparse way that still somehow manages to be bright and elegant and dark and deeply twisted. Although quite different overall, this movie's ability to portray a comedic overcast against a horrific backdrop without sacrificing itself to becoming a total comedy is reminiscent of American Psycho. While different in execution and scope, they both skillfully demonstrate a dualistic tone of playful monstrosity that is alluring from the getgo and a good bit of fun. There is admittedly a brief period a little over halfway through where this movie starts to lose itself, but then it does a complete heel turn and leads headstrong into a shockingly satisfying conclusion. I also think that the casting of Angela Bettis as May was absolutely perfect and a majorly important factor towards the film's success. She simultaneously portrays shy and creepy and adorable and terrifying just so well. She's lovable and pitiable and scary and vile exactly as much as she needs to be exactly when she needs to be. The script asked a lot of the main character, and she definitely delivered.
    I'd give this one a B+.
Perfect Blue: I added to my list because of this video, so thanks!
Hereditary: As you said, this isn't exactly an underrated film, because it was very popular. That being said, I wanted to mention how effectively horrifying this movie was (there are two or three scenes that I found to be some of the most disturbing of any movie from the past five years that I've personally seen).
    I'd give it a B.
Midsommer: I specifically wanted to mention my favorable opinion of Hereditary because my opinion on Midsommer is less complimentary. I think Ari Aster has great vision and ability, but I simply think Hereditary was a much better demonstration of that than Midsommar. Midsommar has some appreciable visual spectacle, however it was much like The Invitation in that it came off in my opinion as thinking itself to be deeper than it actually was, and seemed to think it was presenting some sort of suspenseful question that was immediately answerable and thus not very suspenseful. It also paralleled The Invitation in that I really can't say a bad word about the performances, even if I found the rest of it ultimately no better than decent.
    I'd give it a C.
Also girl your eye makeup in this video is really on point, just letting you know :D

I thoroughly enjoyed reading each and every one of your brief reviews - thanks for sharing your thoughts! I especially loved your take on May; you captured my feelings for the film (and Angela Bettis' performance) so accurately and eloquently. Makes me want to watch it again, haha.
I also get your feelings for Midsommar; I recently rewatched it with a couple of friends (who hadn't seen it before), and they had similar thoughts of it being more style over substance. I do have this fascination/fear of cults so perhaps I had a more biased viewing experience, and though I knew what was coming, it was effective for me nevertheless 😛 But I can understand how those looking for a more unique twist may be left wanting.
Really glad you enjoyed my video, and hope you enjoy The Lodge/Perfect Blue! (also happy to know I had a good makeup day hahaha!)

@@ana-isabel Aw, I'm glad to know you read and appreciated that comment, because I spent longer on it than I expected to. I actually spent effort especially on my feelings on May because I think that's the most under-appreciated movie on your list, so it's really cool to know that you especially liked it!
I was going to give some recommendations of other horror movies to watch in my original comment, but it ended up too long and I was kinda done typing haha. Still, if you want some, I'd say that some of my personal favorites are "[REC]," "Hush" (I mean the 2016 Netflix Original movie, although the episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer called Hush is an absolutely fantastic and legitimately very scary episode of television), "The Descent," "Train to Busan," and "It Follows." And if you want something lighter then "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" is a great horror-comedy and "Anna and the Apocalypse" is a solid 28-Days-Later-meets-High-School-Musical kind of movie (Christmas movie at that) that I think is sorely overlooked. And for what it's worth, I think most (but not quite all) horror classics really are classics for a reason.
I could recommend 50 more but I don't wanna keep you here for days 😄
And yeah just wanna add on that the serious work that you put into your video essays is clearly evident, and we all really do appreciate it, so just keep doing what you're doing and we'll be here waiting to watch your views/sub count pop the f off 👍🏼

      @ana-isabel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

You're so sweet - thank you!!! I'm so glad you've enjoyed my content so far ☺
And also omg, your taste in movies is amazing haha. I've literally seen every movie you've listed and I love them all! My favourites from the bunch are "Hush" and "It Follows", in particular. Two uniquely-directed movies with gripping concepts (and loved how weird the latter was lol). Also, I completely agree on how overlooked "Anna and the Apocalypse" was - it was a really entertaining take on the zombie genre that didn't receive nearly the amount of love it deserved. The Descent made me afraid to ever try spelunking lol and REC is probably one of the best-directed found footage films out there.
I think you and I would really get along with horror films haha! Other lesser-known ones I've loved (and recommend if you haven't seen them yet) are Oculus, Julia's Eyes, Better Watch Out, and The Babysitter. The last two are more of horror-comedies though with similar premises 😛
Thanks for sharing your favourites and again - awesome picks!

How? Legit. I actually wanna know why people loved it. I'm sitting here having been recommended this by multiple people and yet I saw absolutely nothing engaging in the entire thing. It was a cliche "dumb main characters die because of dumb" only that they somehow managed to make them the most boring people one could ever meet. Was that the point? Was the point to show us people we'd hope to never have our time wasted with irl and then have us see them die? I'm actually confused lmao

I feel like gerald's game is a cautionary tale for the BDSM and kink community as to why we use specific equipment that's designs for subs to escape restraints in need be. The whole point of BDSM is willing submission so all of the equipment is designs to be escapable, although you wouldn't dare to try it in a scene, because you're submitting willingly to the scene.
Never use real cuffs, never use zip ties, and for the love of all things good and fun, always give your partner an out in the form of safe words and somewhat easy to loosen knots (shibari). If these commonly known and agreed upon standards were followed in gerald's game the entire event could have been avoided, thus giving us a fantasticaly gruesome cautionary tale.

Great recommendations, thanks! Watched and LOVED Midsommar! It`s one of the films, that you`d want to rewatch for the details, BUT AFRAID! Beautifully unsetteling. Couple films from you are already in my list, the rest will follow there :)
also consider watching Sharp objects (miniseries with Amy Adams). Not really a horror, more of a crime. But also deals with a lot of phsycological issues of it`s characters. Very dark but beautiful.
and a film The forest (with Natalie Dormer). Like you said, it have been coming to me when I`m going to bed almost for a year and I can`t explain why. Yeah, it was scary, but not THAT much. And it`s more on a jump-scare-type of a spectrum, just to be clear.
Hope that you`ll have more subs :)

haha That intro was a slapper lol
Cant say im a fan of horror. Im like you, dig the supernatural but am a wimp lol Hocus Pocus is my go to for the season lol (sad).
Gore is very very much not my thing and most likely the reason why i dont like horror. But Green Room sounds very cool. And i love me some Patty Stew!!
The Invitation was honestly quite the nice urprise. Very well shot and thought provoking. I almost want a prequle to this similar to Purge (even though thats the not ideal in Hollywood lol).

Your selection is fantastic and I can relate so much. Spot on.
I love how Perfect Blue is this strange topsy turvy movie that is the closest thing to an anime meeting Hitchcock or Kubrick style storytelling. I'd also recommend Paranoia Agent (a series also made by Satoshi Kon that is a bit harder to get hands on these days, but fantastic as well)
The Invitation is great and I watched it without knowing anything although the mention of cults does come up early on in the movie, so I got really interested from that point on as I have a fascination with cults as someone who is also interested in psychology. I can imagine what serial killers are to detectives, cults are to psychologists. It is scary and concerning how people can be when suffering from a vacuum of purpose or meaning to life as they frantically search for anywhere they can find comfort of filling in the void.
I loved Hereditary and Midsommar, granted Midsommar did feel like a very different movie to me for some reason. A slower burn I suppose, but even more thoughtful. Also really hope that Ari decides to work with Colin Stetson again though as they can make a ridiculous horror score and am even looking forward to Toonami's upcoming adaptation of Ito's Uzumaki in part because Stetson is on board.
I really want to see the Green Room as a DemSoc musician that plays Napalm Death style grindcore and is really looking forward to witnessing Nazis get their brains bashed in 4K. Nazi Lives Don't Matter because Black Lives Do Matter.
Great list though, truly love it and your work

Besides that, the first time I watched the movie was when i entered a film screening room at college with absolutely no idea of what it was about or even that it was horror. Sure was a fun experience figuring it out fnegrjshdhn

Great list. I had already watched earlier all the movies you mentioned other than May.
I would also recommend some other less well known horror movies below. Korean horror are some of the best horror movies made in recent years, not just because of their effective dread and horror they convey (they rarely do jump scares) but also the societal themes they communicate.
Korean - Wailing, Tale of Two Sisters, Train to Busan
    Spanish - Devil's Backbone
    British - Descent, Severance
US - Cell, It Follows, Triangle

This might be more of a thriller than horror, but I thought the 2020 remake of the Invisible Man was done really well and gave kind of an uneasy feeling throughout the movie, because you couldn't tell when the antagonist was watching or when they would attack. Even just watching it gave me a sort of vicarious paranoia for the main character. I love when a film doesn't show the villian or monster for most of the movie.

    The Host (2006)

Something in your commentary here brings to mind the film The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea (1976). It has been a long time since I saw it, but I remember it as being something of a disturbed coming of age story (male perspective). After looking it up to get the title right, I see I should include a graphic sex/nudity content warning. A slow character study throughout.

But Midsommar was so beautiful, bright, different. I loved the story. I loved the acting. Especially the scene where Dani was crying and the other women started to cry with her. It was very reminiscent of the handmaids tale. And it was making my friends and I root for the murder because I had just gotten out of a long term relationship with a gaslighting man who talked to me just like her boyfriend did in the film.

Just wanted to add that there are some pretty awesome older (and even newer 2019 bangers like The Deeper You Dig) horror movies out there that are getting a resurgence in boutique blu ray releases. For specifically horror there’s Vinegar Syndrome, Scream (under the shout label), Synapse, and horror/cult/some art house labels like Arrow, which I highly recommend. Going down the rabbit hole of collecting isn’t the only option obviously, you can truly just use all the label’s catalogues to either find a jumping off point or deep dive into a particular period/director/DP/production company/genre. I’ve definitely gone on a couple deep dives and own a little too many blu rays to justify so feel free to ask for recommendations if anyone cares about this late-ass post.

I really enjoyed the movie Tonight She Comes. It often has really low ratings, and all the reviews at the time classify it as a terrible movie. To me it has a lot of serious satire about different horror tropes and cliches, although most people claim it's just bad acting. Regardless, the movie goes crazy at the mid point, and it's basically one big roller-coaster ride down right up to the end. As it just keeps topping itself off until the ominous ending. But overall, I think it's a really crazy and fun experience for people that enjoy horror movies.
I really wish more people would have seen it, and enjoyed it like I did. Beware that it's very gory and disgusting, and not an easy view for some people, should anyone read this and try to give it a go.

It is obvious you are a "slow-burn-high-tension" horror fan, rather than a "fast-paced-violence-gore" horror fan. On top of Individual-focused vs. Society-focused.
I have a feeling that 10 Cloverfield Lane, and similar, rank highly with you.
I am on the other side of the coin (28 Days Later, As Above So Below, and similar), preferring fast-paced-violence-gore on a society level, but the individual level (like slashers) is nearly as good. It is more about the pacing and the regular "payoff".
Yet most would lump us together as simply "Horror Fans". (A good "medium" would probably be Eli Roth movies: Hostel, Cabin Fever... but even his build-ups can be too slow at times for me)

    Long post. Sorry.
The invitation was good, but didn't find it to be scary. The 'tropes' used in this film kind of lead you astray and try to indicate your generic outcome with the paranoia angle but this I felt it kind of subverted that in a sense. Especially the very last scene. I enjoyed it.
I did watch Gerald's Games but I dont think I finished it. I dont remember the end. Ill have to rewatch it.
May was creepy and disturbing. Tough it did make me feel really sorry for her position in society. Made me sad thinking about real people in those situations. I thought about it alot. Emotionally disturbing kind of a horror for sure, if that make sense.
Midsommar and Hereditary are quality. The former very disturbing and quietly chilling, which is a hard thing to pull off I think. The latter was very much your typical horror but a slower burner. Definitely pays off though.
Perfect Blue has been on my PC for ages ready to be watched. I just keep getting distracted by many other things to the point that I forget about it completely.
If you haven't seen them then I'd recommend Sessions 9, Oculus, The Orphanage, 1408, Jacobs Ladder. Would love to hear your thoughts on these if you have seen them or do watch them.
Enjoying the channel by the way. The presentation and editing is pretty good for a relatively new channel. We seem to have the same taste in shows and movies with the same detailed opinion about them, especially with the Halt and Catch Fire video you did. That pulled me in. Ill be definitely sure to keep an eye on more related videos. Keep up the outstanding work. Your channel with definitely grow. :)

Ahhh don't be sorry! I love getting to discuss with viewers on the movies/topics I cover - it's one my favourite things about having a channel! 😄
You've pretty much laid out my exact thoughts on both The Invitation and May (though the former did actually scare me, probs 'cause it was a horror more grounded in reality). May definitely left me feeling both creeped out and heartbroken - a strange combination, but one that landed super well with its social commentary. And I absolutely agree with your take on The Invitation, the movie did a great job at keeping you guessing and subverting typical horror cliches. The last scene gave me chills; it was so well done.
And yes, Midsommar and Hereditary are up there among my horror favourites, and I can't wait to see what Aster does next.
As for Gerald's Game and Perfect Blue - I highly, highly recommend! Both are pretty fast-paced and entertaining throughout while still offering an original, thoughtful story. High replay value, too - especially with PB, it's one you can watch multiple times while picking up on new details with each watch.
Love your recommendations, I've actually seen them all except for Jacobs Ladder - which I'm now adding to my list (just Googled it and the premise has me instantly intrigued haha). I'd say my favourites among those are Oculus and The Orphanage. Both had remarkably tragic stories while being genuinely eerie in presentation.
Thanks so much for stopping by channel, and I'm glad you're enjoying the content so far! 😊 It seems you do have the same taste in movies/TV as I do haha. I seriously appreciate the encouraging words, and hope my future reviews/commentaries continue to entertain. :)
