    I love Douglass Addams, but you should really give credit to Sir Terry Pratchett
    if you haven't read the book (Good Omens), the series is a pretty decent adaptation (with a few changes of course, for example I suspect they removed a lot of the Them focus because they didn't want to overly rely on child acting)
    and read more of Terry's work, it is really worth it

    • @ana-isabel

      Ooohh yes! Gotta add this to my bucket list of books!

      I definitely concur. It is one of the very few books where I have laughed out loud uncontrollably while reading in specific spots.

    • @CorwinAlexander
      @CorwinAlexander 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@ana-isabel You're going to need a bigger bucket. In Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld series alone there are around 42 books. (I recommend starting with the third and fourth then going back to the first and second before continuing to read the series. (Also, if you don't have time to read a massive written legacy, it's one of the most ubiquitously translated to audio book series. Pretty much every book is available as an audio book, and with some amazing readers))

    • @CorwinAlexander
      @CorwinAlexander 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@felisd I have yet to read Good Omens. I feel like the Neil Gammon part of the STP-Gammon collabs made them weaker rather than stronger (but, really, that opinion is mostly based on The Long Earth series - formulaic and dry)

    • @felisd
      @felisd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CorwinAlexander I believe this was their first collaboration, back when Gaiman was still solidifying his voice. As such, Pratchett likely had a bigger influence on the tone of the book than Gaiman did. It certainly feels that way to me.

    I don’t think a show has ever made me as mentally and emotionally confused as Dark did and I love it. It’s deep, tragic and gloomy, yet there’s still signs of hope in it, kinda like a light at the end of a tunnel.
    Probably the best written show from beginning to end I’ve ever seen, easy 10/10 personally.

    If you havent seen it, because it really feels like no one has, Dirk Gently (Douglas Adams). Its probobly hard to trust me, but I'm actually you from the future, and your life will be both better and worse if you watch Dirk Gently. Oh, and Misfits. Definitely Misfits. Again, better and worse overall life. I actually will be surprised if you havent seen these though because I honestly think we might be the same person.

    This was a solid list of show recommendations. One day, I'll get a Hulu subscription and finally watch 'Future Man'. I promise!
    Since you mentioned 'Arrested Development' and 'Community', I always felt that my network comedy trifecta was rounded out by 'Happy Endings'. It's like the show took the same elevated personas and sharp pop culture humor and infused them into the sitcom style of Friends.
    Also, 'The Leftovers'. Always 'The Leftovers'.

      Add my voice. I don't even know why YT recommended your Gatekeeping video to me. While I've been within nerd/geek culture since the late 70s, and am highly interested in the topic of gatekeeping in nerd culture (and the extremism of gatekeeping in nerd culture that became the incel movement), I hadn't watched any videos related to this topic in over a year. I first read the comics when I was a teenager, by far my favorite comic series. I really wasn't feeling it in the first season, but I seem to remember really liking the second and third. I seem to remember the first season trying really hard, and seasons 2-3 following the comics a lot better. Gotta catch up on season 4 still.

    Also, here's another underrated TV show that's a favorite of mine:
    Alien Nation
    it was originally a movie with James Caan and Mandy Patenkin, but it got adapted into a TV show during the early days of the Fox Network. It's a buddy-cop show set "twenty minutes into the future..." 1995, to be exact (the show came out in 1990), with a sci-fi twist; one of the buddies is part of a race of alien refugees who crash-landed in the Mojave Desert and assimilated into human society. It had interesting characters, and you get a feel of how the alien culture operates and the prejudices they have to deal with.
    Notice that I said it was on Fox? Well, their trend of canning good shows after a season goes back to the very beginning of the network. Despite having high ratings, Alien Nation was cancelled after one season so that Fox would make room for more sitcoms. That didn't pan out as well as the executives hoped and were subsequently fired. When the new administration took office, they gave Alien Nation a second wind in the form of 5 TV movies, picking up where the series left off.
    Both the series and the TV movies are technically available on DVD, but they have been harder and harder to come by as of late. You can find them if you look for them, and if you do, I would say they're worth a chance.

    I'm not entirely sure how my youtube recommendations led me here but I'm glad they did. A wonderful list of shows I've loved (except Barry but because you reminded me of it, I'm going to start binging today).

    I LOVE Community, one of my favourite TV series that I love to binge at least once a year. It's fantastic, and even though season 4 is a bit of stain on the show, 5 recaptured so much if what I loved about it in the first place. 6, well, it's not the best but still enjoyable. The absence of 2 of the original cast, as well as Hickey and Duncan were really felt hard. I still love it to bits
    Arrested Development! I just finished rewatching it after learning that I'd only seen half of season 5 -and wish I'd left it at half of season 5 :P Nevertheless, another TV series that I love the comedy and writing of.
    And a hat trick with Firefly. Another of my favourite TV shows. Not gonna lie, the Jayne hat in the thumbnail had me hoping that you'd have Firefly on the list, and I wasn't disappointed. I actually saw the movie Serenity before the show, and fell in love with the crew, after that I hunted down the DVD and was happy to find it. I've never gotten heavily into the Weadon-verse, but Firefly lead me to Dollhouse, which while not as good in my eyes was still an enjoyable show. It only lasted 2 seasons, and my vague memory is that the 2nd was used to quickly end the story lines, so it didnt get left in limbo at least. I might need to rewatch it now
    I've heard great things about Barry, and a work mate has sung praise of Maniacs - I think your video has convinced me to check them out!
    I might even give Crazy Ex a shot, the advertising in Australia made it out to be less of a show that I'd like, but given several shows on your list were marred by the same issue, I should try
    Not a show that ended before its time, but I was only introduced to the cartoon series Gravity Falls this year, and while the first episode made it feel like it was going to be a typical cartoon, it soon became apparent that there's a long stretching story that links nearly all the episodes together with some fun mystery - there's a puzzle at the end of every episode and some truly fantastic fan theory and interactions with the show. It also has some great characters and wholesome humour. Worth a watch!
    Maybe it was something about this year, but I re-binged a few cartoons: Avatar the Last Air bender, and The legend of Korra would be at the top of the list - both excellent shows, the latter suffered from studio interference, it was originally going to be a single season, then a 2nd was ordered, and a 3rd etc. which resulted in story and character progression that lacked the continuity and grand vision of Avatar. It's still really good, and where Avatar is the more classic good vs. evil, Korra being an older character deals with a more mature outlook on life and consequences of choices, as well as exploring shades of grey with antagonists that aren't simply evil and often have legitimate points to the foundation of what then grows into extremism and ultimately evil/bad.

    A gold mine of a list, Community is my favorite sitcom second only to The Office US, Barry is a hidden gem that I cant wait to rewatch and Good Omens is just epic! The rest I haven't seen but judging your taste they are at the top of my list now, thanks! :)

    Pretty much every show that you mentioned is one of my favorite ones, except for Maniac, idk i wasn't that impressed but my god community, dark and 1st season Future Man? I will die trying to convince everybody that i come in contact with to watch those

    Arrested Development and Community are my big most underappreciated shows., along with Veronica Mars, Joan of Arcadia, NewsRadio, My Name is Earl, and an even earlier Jason Bateman show, It's Your Move from the '80s. It had a great premise of a cat-and-mouse game between a con man kid and his neighbor. It was considered too "cynical" to last, and ruined everything by revealing everything to the other characters. It only lasted 1 season.

    I'll probably give Good Omens a spin, as well as Preacher, since I caught sight of Joe Gilgun, who is one of my favorite comedic actors (If you haven't seen Misfits, give it a spin). Thanks, great reviews and that is a very nice hat. Girl wears a hat like that, well, they're not afraid of anyone...

    I have a bunch of shows I constantly try getting people to watch so here it goes:
    The OA.
    I’d call it a sci-fi mystery drama which explores quite unique ideas of interconnectedness but was axed cause it didn’t bring in enough viewers despite originally being signed as a 5 season series. It is written and produced by the lead actress and her writing partner which are both more known for their indie films. The season finale of the 2nd and final season is such a massive cliffhanger that it should seriously be illegal for Netflix to cancel the show, but oh well. However, the series starts out rather slow and needs quite some time to ramp up, but it really is worth it in my opinion.
    Sense8.
    Another series exploring ideas of interconnectedness (I sure do hope this is an actual word) with a rather insane budget that shows during production being filmed all over the world. It was axed because the high budget could not be justified with the amount of viewers it brought in, but it’s persistent Fantasie actually got it revived for a kind of extended season finale/movie that managed to kind of tie up most of the threads although it certainly was not the ending the show deserved at least it wasn’t horrible either. Oh also it’s written and produced by the wachowski sisters (cloud atlas, matrix trilogy)
    Dirk gently‘s.
    I mean you briefly mentioned it in your video so probably not much explanation needed here.
    Bojack Horseman.
    I guess this one really isn’t as niche anymore and only got axed a season before it’s natural end so the wrapping up in the last season is incredibly well done albeit feeling a little bit rushed to me. It starts out coming off as a really whacky comedy series sporting a lot of ˋinternet humour´ as one of my friends called it, but goes on to dive quite deeply into very real and relevant topics centered around drug abuse, psychological trauma and the overcoming or at least acceptance of those. The start of the series makes it really hard to get people invested tho as most I try to convince to watch it kind of give up after a few episodes before the show really has a chance to take off.

    I binge-read all the Preacher comics a few years ago and was happy to see Seth Rogan's adaptation was pretty faithful but felt semi-sanitized for TV. Still, the cast is great and it's pretty cool that the series even got made! Based on your recommendation I will be checking out Good Omens for sure. (PS I also loved Maniac and frequently rewatch Community). Oh, PPS, the most tragic cancellation for me was Pushing Daisies.

      Ahhh I just found Hannibal on Netflix Aus and will definitely add this to my watch list! I've heard so many good things about this one - though I never hopped on the train while it was still airing, for some reason. Such a good cast too, can't go wrong with Mads Mikkelson, Gillian Anderson and Hugh Dancy. :)

      I dunno.. the whole space ships and cowboys thing is more common in Sci-Fi than Firefly fans want to admit. It's really just the first series to spell out that society is divided into technology haves and those who are sidelined into a more primitive scavenger existence. Firefly is just more deliberately stylized that way.

    It took me SOOO long to notice that was a Blue Sun t-shirt and that was a cunning hat.
    One thing that you missed about Firefly's downfall was that, not only was it marketed poorly, not only was it aired out of order, not only was it aired on Friday nights, but it was also slotted in after Fox's high money, highly promoted inaugural season of XFL - the extreme football league. Not only was XFL their baby and intended golden cow so it got all the love, but games would often overrun and delay (and in at least one case pre-empt) the start of Firefly (preventing effective recording and time-shifting of the show and making it more difficult for people to latch onto).
    Out of everything that derailed Firefly, I'd say airing it after XFL games (and the long-winded post-game commentary) was the greatest problem.
    And who (other than OG Browncoats) even remembers the XFL now? :salt_bae_gif: Fox was far too short-sighted and wanting a piece of that sweet, sweet televised sports revenue to recognise the value of Firefly.

    Good Omens is incredibly British and incredibly 80s. They tried to update the novel a bit for the TV show, but I think that takes some of the teeth of satire away. It was potent because it was so specific. If you can get into both cultural aspects, then I really recommend the book. It's an amazing piece of action comedy literature.

    • @nickbell8353
      @nickbell8353 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I absolutely love Preacher and Arrestes Development! Real quick, other shows that don't get talked about enough are Better Call Saul and Schitt's Creek. I loved Dark up until season 2, it was just the right amount of complex for my taste. And then season 3 brought in a new element that just made everything so convoluted, and then the whole everyone lying to each other thing got old for me. I had 2 episodes to go earlier this year when I dropped it when season 2 of The Umbrella Academy came out. I still intend to finish it, if only to see how it ends.
