Hahaha²!!! Paul! I saw so much of my own bad behavior in your example I had to shake my head. I complain to my Filipino BF all the time about conditions in the Philippines, over which he has no control or responsibility for. I needed to see this video!

The scene of the boat from the hotel to the van was a perfect symbol of my experience of the Philippines. Terrible infrastructure, poor drainage, crazy weather all shrugged off by resilient people who know how to make things work with whatever is available. And they have fun and laugh while getting the job done despite the problems. It's been too long since I've been there. Looking forward to my visit in January, hope we cross paths.

This has to be one of the best videos I’ve watched. I hope it gets a million views. I guess this could’ve been called “Suffering In the name of content”. I’ll be sharing this.
By the way - the boat ride was the best part.

Great stuff, as always. Mae, you look fabulous in this installment, and I love your evolving sense of style. Yes, we definitely want a couple of months' worth of Thailand stories! I think many of your viewers are looking forward to your impressions of the contrasts and comparisons between the two cultures and told from each of your unique individual perspectives. Can't wait!

Hey dude, I'm only going to make one point about all this, I feel for you and what happened but this can be anticipated from Jun - Jan. It used to be Jul - Dec but global warming has extended the season of tropical storms/typhoons there.
Do yourself a favor and get flight ins. or pay a little more for the tickets to where they can be changed during the typhoon season because the PH is TERRIBLE at giving out good info for how a season is going to go, etc.... so you just have no idea. It's different in the US because the country has NOAA and NWS that work together to give pretty good projections on how the season is going to be and where the storms are most likely going to happen.
I would have been a mental wreck in that situation you were in. As it is, my wife's family in the PH had to shift to one home because the other ones were flooded a couple feet high. It's not anything new, so they're used to it. It happens to them every few years.
I just know that in the US we usually have very good predictions, going all the way to where a system is called an "invest", which isn't even a tropical depression, and they follow it so you know what's happening. In the PH, you don't even hear about storms until they're a tropical storm and by that time it can be a typhoon the next day.
You actually got lucky with those flights because heavy rain can cause flights to get cancelled. You can get rain falling too hard and the runway can't wick water away fast enough and it makes it too hard to land planes. Taking off is a little easier, but landing becomes an issue because a plane has to come in at a min. speed and a plane will hydroplane giving them very little braking action and be totally dependent on reverse thrust and airlines don't like to land planes that way. If they're hydroplaning on the landing a plane can also start to get a little sideways going down the runway. So you got lucky that the rain wasn't too heavy at any particular time going into an airport or they could have diverted you.

I actually learned a lot about having patience and letting things go from the very few hours we got to talk than from anyone else I have ever known. And I COMPLETELY understand what you felt about the circumstances of your return trip especially considering the last minute extra costs. And Mae is so cute...in the middle of all this at 17:10 she pops up with the cheerful, I got "hot chocolate!" lol. Simple pleasures, right? What a sweetie.

Great story! I'm a traveler, 86 countries, all seven continents, and over 5 million air miles! I love hearing travel stories. Please share more of your travel adventures with us. I always enjoy meeting a new person who has traveled. It's hard to get a word in edgewise because we want to share our experiences with everyone we meet. I even thought about writing a book, but I'm not a writer, and I have to hunt and peck to type. As you get older, you find that all of the bad experiences turn into great stories for others to hear. Traveling is about experiencing something new, and it doesn't always go as planned, but you learn to survive the experience, and you have a new story to tell.

I Love a good story, so I loved this video.
That's something I'm learning in life, things rarely go "according to plan" but they tend to work out in the end (this is even more obvious in the Philippines, where the plan is more of a rough estimation of something that might be possible)

They were so jubilant in such a harsh situation and putting up with some people that probably didn't want to be so nice back. The entire neighborhood seemed to be upbeat despite the conditions....wonderful Philippine people for sure. I hope you showed your appreciation with a gratuity of some kind.
